Red Obsession Storyline

For centuries, Bordeaux has assumed a mythical status in the world of fine wine as a leitmotif of wealth, power and influence, but its prosperity has always been linked to the capricious nature of markets and the shifting fortunes of global economies. Now change is coming to Bordeaux, with traditional customers like the US and the UK falling away, as China’s new rich push prices to stratospheric levels. The demand is unprecedented, but the product is finite and this new client wants it all. Will the China market be the bubble that never bursts or the biggest threat yet to Bordeaux’s centuries old reputation?—Anonymous

Red Obsession Movie Reviews

It’s no longer about enjoying the wine…

I was only mildly interested in watching this documentary and turned it on expecting very little. After all, I rarely ever drink French wines and just don’t have much interest in them. However, I soon realized that in many ways the film isn’t really about wines at all- -it’s all a metaphor for the sudden and very dramatic rise in the Chinese economy and their subsequent buying power. It also, in many ways, is much like the entrance of Americans into the world economy in the 20th century–when some folks were more interested in spending their money on some hot commodity instead of what is quality. In the film, the Chinese elite seem too interested in specific famous labels as opposed to actually DRINKING the wines– and as a result of folks stockpiling the wines and paying top dollar, the wine prices on the ‘best’ wines are astronomical and no one can afford to drink them! All in all, a fascinating film that really gets you to think.

Nice Architecture, Too Few Facts

This is an Australian-produced doco, looking at the history of wines from Bordeaux.

It is 75 minutes long.

After 75 minutes, I was aware that they have been making wines in Bordeaux since the Romans brought the vines; that Napoleon III had the wines graded in 1855 and the grades given remain to this day; that conditions come together for a great vintage about every 20 years; that wine is bought as an investment; that Americans have stopped buying it but the Chinese now do; that some French are sniffily xenophobic about dealing with the Chinese and that if the Chinese ever stop buying, the market may collapse.

Those facts took 75 minutes to explain. 75 very long minutes.

Some nice aerial photography. And looking at beautifully designed and constructed French chateaux is always easy on the eye.

The film had a nice, laconic commentary from Russell Crowe whose smoky, tobacco-enhanced voice fitted the subject well.

But it was all just too superficial, too under-researched with not enough of interest to fill the film’s time span. Some more history would have been welcome; the Great French Wine Blight of the late 1850s post-dated Napoleon III’s gradings – didn’t the blight make them obsolete? This question wasn’t addressed but would seem fundamental to an evaluation of Bordeaux. Still, I’m sure had I gone to France’s bucolic beauty spots to research such a film, I too would have been so distracted drinking the stuff I’d have forgotten the reason for the visit.

Shame about the audience

I’m a wine person.

I have consumed, studied, taught and debated the topic for almost 30 years now. I love the stuff. But… watching this film reminded me how wound up we wine-people are in our own world.

Although I found the documentary interesting and important to know, I also recognise that this film grossed less than US$10,000- at the box office. Now, I don’t know what the budget was to make this film, but who in their right mind thought that this would be a good idea for a theatrical release? I’m guessing that enough people got together and convinced themselves that this would work. And secured enough funding from (almost surely) a wealthy wine-lover.

No rational film producer would ever have looked at the script and gone ‘Yeah, images of French châteaux, and celebrities in the wine field will be a huge hit! Let’s get Rusty to narrate and we’ve got it made!!!’

If you’re just starting to develop an interest in wine, this should be mandatory watching. Enthusiasts already know most of the content, and will probably bemoan the lack of further detail. But if wine isn’t your thing, you’ll really wish you’d spent the 75 minutes on another film.

Neurons to Nirvana Storyline

A stylish, in depth look at the renaissance in psychedelic drug research in light of current scientific, medical and cultural knowledge. The film explores these socially taboo substances as adjuncts to psychotherapy, as crucial but neglected medicines, and as technologies of consciousness. From Neurons to Nirvana: The Great Medicines features interviews with some of the world’s foremost researchers, writers, and pioneers in the growing field of psychedelic psychotherapy. These radical healers and dissenters are using everything from ancient concoctions to newly created designer molecules to the once demonized psychedelic drugs of the 1960s. They argue convincingly for the legal right to incorporate these substances into therapeutic practice.—Anonymous

Neurons to Nirvana Movie Reviews

Great documentary, except for their disparaging comments about antidepressants

This documentary had great insights into the realities of various drugs, and I liked how they made an effort to focus on facts as opposed to fear based opinions on psychedelics. Ironically, I feel like when they mentioned antidepressants the people interviewed gave an emotion based opinion as opposed to sticking to the facts … because pharmaceutical antidepressants are produced by corporations, and the doctors and pundits in the documentary were more liberal leaning they talked about the antidepressants, ‘dampening’, and ‘hindering’ the ‘true human’ in the brain, whereas non corporate psychedelics or other non monetized drugs, they felt, helped people overcome depression through, ‘true insight’. In reality, all plants or chemicals, whether corporate or non corporate are altering brain chemistry, dampening some parts of the brain, while allowing others to flourish. Its true that using antidepressants without talk therapy can lead to relapses in depression, but if one sticks to the facts, it is clear to see that antidepressants can modulate depression allowing one to do talk therapy they never would have had the strength to do if not for the antidepressants. Crippling depressions is just that … crippling … and antidepressants can help one come to deep insights, just like other psychedelics can. Overall it is infuriating when strong conservatives are hypocritical and say all illegal drugs have no redeeming qualities or benefits, but also equally hypocritical and infuriating when far leaning liberals spout generalizations that drugs produced by pharmaceutical are just there to make money and enslave the populace by treating symptoms and make the corporations money, and dampen the human spirit through numbing out the populace. Both generalizations are not true, and the path forward to truth would be better served if the doctors and people with knowledge are vigorous in analyzing whether they are speaking with emotion or facts. Overall though, a great documentary and thought provoking.

Informative but overproduced

The documentary highlights some of the most important medical aspects of use of psychedelics. It’s extremely important to educate people in this field, for sure. The interviewees are some of the brightest minds in this field of study, it’s a pleasure to see them all participating and explaining stuff. Maybe the choice to make the documentary only one hour nine minutes long is the right one, so the writers had to focus on the very key ideas. But unfortunately the visuals are heavily overproduced to the extent of being sometimes totally incoherent, interfering and disconnected from the narrative. I understand that one needs to have some visual effects to make a story more colorful and attractive to public, but there’s a measure for it. There was no need to make it so conspiracy-looking and new age-ish at the same time.

Understanding Psychedelics as Medicines

I was deeply impressed by the breadth and depth of the interviews presented in this documentary and the amazing quality of the graphics, design and editing. Hockenhull has done a masterful job of exploring the critical importance of often “banned”psychedelic substances and the need to re-evaluate our understanding of the constructive role they can play in psychology, therapy, sociology and neuroscience.

Based on the evidence provided in Neurons to Nirvana it clear that a we need to end the war on drugs and recognize that this outdated prohibition is effectively blocking curative therapies for addiction, trauma and a host of other human suffering.

This is a comprehensive modern documentary about hugely important subject matter that needs to be seen, synthesized and discussed – by both professionals and laymen.

The Champions Storyline

When the news broke that former Atlanta Falcons star quarterback Michael Vick was implicated in a long running illegal dog-fighting ring, the case shone a public light into the world of dog fighting. It showed the human spirit at its most degraded, a world where men gather in secret to gamble and celebrate as dogs are forced to fight to their deaths. Dogs that refused to fight were tortured, drowned, hanged, and electrocuted. Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison, (none for animal cruelty), and later returned to lucrative high-profile career in the NFL. Left behind in the aftermath were over 50 pit-bulls who associated humans with brutality, fear, and fighting. The judicial system had saved them from the ring, but what next? The Humane Society of the United States considered them to be the most aggressively trained pit-bulls in the country. PETA described them as a ticking time bomb. But, as one of the attorneys involved in the case explains, the general public and animal welfare advocates started asking the prosecutors why do you have to kill these dogs? The prosecutor said he received more calls and emails about the fate of the dogs than when a terrorist was arrested. The judge who decided their fate said he received over 3,000 emails and his assistant was taking 200 calls per day about the case at the time. A handful of organizations stepped up to this challenge, recognizing the dogs as the victims and willing to give them a second chance. A pit-bull rescue organization named BADRAP in San Francisco took ten of the dogs considered more adoptable. Best Friends Animal Society agreed to take 22 dogs that no one else could, the dogs many considered the most challenging. Even though the unique no-kill animal sanctuary, based in Southern Utah, had an extremely qualified and dedicated full-time staff of veterinarians, trainers, and caregivers, they were unsure whether or not they would succeed. They hoped that with time, patience, and dedication, they could rehabilitate some, if not all of the dogs, and eventually find many of them loving adoptive homes. Best Friends had taken on difficult dogs before in their almost 30 year history, but this would be their biggest challenge yet, and they were putting their reputationand more importantly, that of the entire breedon the line. The documentary The Champions, follows five of the dogs, from the time they are first rescued through their adoption. It is not just about the dogs themselves, but how they change and inspire the people who come into their lives. It also follows-up with six dogs who remain at Best Friends to this day, some of them for life. Thanks to the work of Best Friends and BADRAP, dozens of the dogs who would have summarily been killed were given a second chance to prove that even fighting dogs rescued from the most extreme circumstances can be successfully rehabilitated with love, time, and patience. That in fact, what many of these dogs need to thrive isnt rehabilitation at all, but time to recover.Today, a majority of the dogs have successfully been placed into loving, adoptive homes. Their story proves that even creatures who have suffered the most unimaginable abuse have amazing strength, spirit, and resilience. It is a story of the bonds of trust and love we have with animals and their importance in our lives, a relationship that has the potential to bring out the best in the human and animal spirit. The film also highlights breed discrimination towards pit-bull type dogs and what that looks and feels like with a segment about professional baseball player Mark Buehrle and his family. Breed discrimination happens across the country and can take a number of different forms, but the Buehrles story is interesting because in an unusual twist of fate, and because of Marks career as a professional baseball pitcher, they experienced it both in Miami-Dade county and in Toronto. Their story is especially touching because while they have faced criticism for choosing that the family live apart from Mark during the season, it exemplifies the significance of peoples pets in their lives one doesnt simply walk away when theres trouble once youve invited a pet to be part of the family. And there is no better time for this topic. There is much recent press surrounding the lack of accountability of the NFL and its players. But more importantly, animal welfare issues are on the rise in our society today, from the conditions of animals in factory farms, fur farms, medical research, the exploitation of animals in the name of entertainment, and the unfair banning of pit-bull type dogs from various cities across the country, just because of their breed. But if Mahatma Gandhi was right that the greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated, this story offers up reasons for hope and signs of progress, and provides an inspirational message for our time.

The Champions Movie Reviews

Amazing

What an amazing documentary. So well made and such an important piece of film in my opinion. Well done to everyone involved!

What an incredible documentary

Neutrino and I watched the whole thing. Couldn’t look away. Eye-opening, tender and sweet, smart — it has it all. Great music, bringing variety and little tonal changes-of-pace.

Makes you want to have a shelter, or wish there was no need for one.

Pet stores should be required to show documentaries like this on a continuous loop. Selling a different message from the “buy a puppy” one.

The Champions are also the incredible people and families who helped rescue these dogs.

Hard to imagine the states and cities that ban pit bulls. One of the great injustices of our time.

If you can watch this movie and not shed a tear, or ten, then you in particular need to rescue a dog. As soon as possible.

The Culture High Movie Reviews

Not Just Another Documentary About Legalizing Marijuana

I’ll spare you the details about why pot should be legal. If you’ve found this movie then you probably already know. And that’s where this documentary has been such a delight to view. It briefly goes into those details and focuses more on the big picture. It posits the question, why did our culture make it illegal in the first place and more importantly why does it continue to keep it illegal by waging a “drug war” that is a clear failure.

From politics, to the media, to the prison industry/asset forfeitures, to drug cartels, to pharmaceuticals, to big corporations, it all boils down to making money. Each has a stake in keeping the status quo and in keeping marijuana illegal. And that’s where this documentary is so much more different than so many other legalize pot docs. It looks at our society as a whole and asks those big questions in an objective manner in spite of its advocacy to legalize pot. Instead of preaching about why pot is so groovy, it focuses on how money corrupts our culture’s institutions and how people are controlled to think a certain way.

Irregardless of the hopelessness and powerlessness one feels when watching how money corrupts almost every aspect of our society, this documentary at the end left me with some feeling of hope that things just might change. Not just in regards to legalizing pot nationally, but that the internet and the flow of information might some day open more doors than those in power keep trying to close. That our society and the world can become a better place.

Rather then get more preachy I’ll just say this, in my humble opinion I would rank this as one of, if not the best documentary on legalizing pot. It’s an all encompassing informative documentary on the topic well worth two hours of your time.

The Culture High grabs a baseball bat and reminds us to really swing!

Like a big brother with more knowledge and wisdom up their sleeve, we all watched his little brother, The Union, take a swing as it taught us about the absurdity of cannabis illegality. Now The Culture High feels much like a big brother stepping in and helping to show the little brother how to really swing for the fences!

There are some amazing gems, some truly golden moments, quotes that will go viral from the amazing slew of people interviewed in The Culture High. I found myself saying things like this several times, “Oh wow, so powerful!” “Incredibly well phrased”. There was also a few times I was quite surprised by some facts put forth… and I know a lot about cannabis. Once I even made that noise, you know where you lean forward, your mouth drops open and you make a shocked little “oh!” sound.

I wanted to acknowledge some of the people that blew me away so I started typing celebrity names here, but deleted them because there are so many who are just amazing. When I say celebrities I’m also referring to the doctors, scientists, et al, that just really deliver the goods in this profound documentary. The way interviews were done, filmed and edited together actually had me at one point really holding back tears, though there were several areas different people may find themselves doing the same, because all our stories are different and we all relate to that which hits hardest, home.

Don’t make the mistake of watching The Culture High and expecting it to be “legalise weed” “legalise weed” “rah rah rah” or even just smashing you in the face with a million facts about the awesome cannabis plant. Not that those elements are missing from The Culture High, more just the fact that this time around they’re of greater significant substance and work together to deliver a more important message.

In the two hour runtime The Culture High aims to be much bigger than The Union and to deliver a much more profound message to us all; humanity. The “Culture” High does just that. The pace fast, the strides long, but just slow enough to wait for those uninformed, so we can all get there together.

If you see one documentary this year, make it The Culture High! After all, humanity seems to finally be coming together on this issue, be unfair to let yourself miss out…. 😉

The most powerful and mind-blowing documentary I’ve seen (and I’ve seen plenty)

I’ve seen their first film The Union, many other pot and drug documentaries and read books by Gabor Matè and Tom Feiling etc. but still Culture High managed to blow my mind.

Like the director Brett Harvey said, Marijuana touches pretty much every issue that is wrong in the world. It’s not that legalizing pot would solve all the problems in the world, but it’s all the injustices in the world that are actually keeping pot illegal.

And it’s not just the topic and the content that makes this film so good. It’s technically and storytelling-wise pure gold. These guys aren’t really pot activist, they are film makers and at least in the field of documentaries, they are one of the best at the moment. I guess the only reason they aren’t more known is because you can’t really get critical acclaim in this world by making a movie about pot – yet 😉

This documentary really has potential to inspire change in the world. So thanks guys for incredible work!

Before the Flood Movie Reviews

Informative, and hopefully it reaches its target audience

I am glad that this documentary was made, even though I felt it was talking to someone other than me. The movie is focused on America (even though what it preaches is relevant all over the world), and much of the information is not really ground breaking if you are already concerned about the environment. I am not complaining about this, as that is probably the best target audience to try to reach for a documentary like this. There’s no reason to make more documentaries preaching to the choir.

The documentary itself is mostly well made. Leonardo travels from one place to the other, and talks with some big names. Some of it feels kind of irrelevant, and the best parts is when Leonardo talks with people who are not that famous, especially the one subject that shows her frustration. Some of the places he travels are interesting to see, though it’s mostly quick visits, and at times they feel more like backdrops than important set pieces. Despite the documentary jumping from one theme to the next, it holds together quite well, and Leonardo’s journey functions well as a mean to take the viewer through all the information.

Personally I would have liked a documentary that was a bit more science heavy, maybe like a combination of the nature trips that Leonardo goes on here, and the presentation from Al Gore’s film. But I can understand why they went in the direction they went here, and I hope it resonates with a lot of people that have not thought much about this.

It is time to take action for our planet.

Before the Flood is a movie in which Leonardo Di Caprio travels around the world and shows us how it is being affected by climate change, reinforcing the fact that we, the human beings, are responsible for it. Through out, his journey he also meets experts and important people who are also concerned about this issue. This truly impacted me and left me thinking about how we are destroying our planet and how we are running out of time. However, it also inspired me to take action from the place I am. In this case I should start consuming differently and voting for leaders who will fight for climate change. I think the most thought provoking person whom he talks with is Dr. Piers Sellers from NASA. He created a model simulation of the earth that shows all the changes our planet has suffered among these years and how each area is being affected in different ways. I would give this movie a 10 because it is a way of showing many people reality and inform them about global warning. Besides, I like the fact that above all the information and facts he gives, the movie is also moving. It makes you feel fear and guilt, but it is also asking you for help. It impacts you in such a way it inspires you to take action about this big issue that is not only affecting us now, but also the future generations.

Leo dons the climate change crown

Greetings again from the darkness. Ten years ago Al Gore became a climate-change icon thanks to the Oscar-winning documentary An Convenient Truth (from director Davis Guggenheim). With this updated warning, the climate change crown is passed to Leonardo DiCaprio, and rather than just speak to the topic, he takes us on a worldwide journey to show us the effects.

The film is bookended by DiCaprio’s speech to the UN general assembly after he was named UN Messenger of Peace on Climate Change. It’s a reminder that the mega movie star has long been an environmental activist … and yes, before you scoff, he does acknowledge that his carbon footprint is probably larger than ours (an obvious understatement – unless you also travel by yacht and private jets, and own multiple mansions).

DiCaprio’s personal story about Bosch’s “The Garden of Earthly Delights” hanging above his crib (seriously, how many parents think this is acceptable artwork for a toddler?) acts as a visual to his message that we are on the path of virtual destruction to the earth that we now know.

The power of celebrity in on full display as DiCaprio scores interviews with such luminaries as UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, President Obama, Elon Musk, John Kerry, and even Pope Francis. There is also a clip of his long-ago interview with then President Clinton (Bill, not Hillary). However, it’s not the talking heads that have the most impact here. Rather, it’s the first-hand look at the Canadian Arctic, the disappearing glaciers of Greenland, the sunny day street flooding in Miami, the destruction of Indonesian Rain Forest to capitalize on the palm oil market, and the eroding coral reefs. The film plays like a Tim Burton Travel Channel series … each stop more nightmarish than the previous.

His passion is obvious, though his knowledge less so. DiCaprio understands the power his celebrity brings, and he joins with director Fisher Stevens (known mostly for his acting, but also an Oscar winning director for The Cove, 2009) in this attempt to bring the urgent message to the masses. As they state, we are beyond simply changing lightbulbs, and the key is a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy … a shift that China (not the U.S.) has taken seriously.

With generic solutions like “consume less” and “vote better”, the film mostly avoids controversy … though it does acknowledge the slick and well-funded ‘campaign of denial’ by those who profit mightily from a fossil-fuel dependent world. We see an impressive map/video screen tracking ocean currents, temperatures, etc. and there is a chart comparing electricity usage by U.S. citizens vs other countries (we are energy hogs, in case you weren’t sure). The ending message hasn’t changed much in the past 10 years … “It is all up to us”.

The Network Storyline

In Romania, chemotherapy drugs are neither accessible free of charge, as required by law, nor can they be acquired in pharmacies. Many of the patients who try in one way or another to procure drugs, are helped by a real Network of people. The network members do not get any financial benefit from their participation in this ‘trade’. The documentary follows the drugs route from one of the oldest pharmacies in Vienna (located near the Opera House) to the patient in Romania.

E-Motion Movie Reviews

The plot summary should read

E-Motion is a documentary that explores how human emotions might have an affect on the physiology of the human body and how once “negative” emotions are replaced with “positive” emotions sometimes correlation can be drawn with physical changes. A team of emotion “experts” looking to cash in selling pop psychology to the masses, share their best marketing language on “negative emotion clearing” methods to show humanity the path to health and enlightenment and to enable their businesses to grow.

Well-intentioned but Flaky pseudoscience

A lot of the movie is a solid foundation in a mix of different sciences. But at some points people decide to mix in some sort of folk medicine here or pseudoscience somewhere else and stuff that’s more similar to poetry at other points. Since the description of the movie is that it is scientifically-based as opposed to presenting folk theory or medicine I have to give it a low rating as it is similar to a YouTube video and lack of scientific structure. If you watch it with a critical eye and want to gain information from it it is a rather nice thing to watch. I would rather have something that is much more clearly science.

Terms and Conditions May Apply Movie Reviews

An Interesting Look At Privacy in the Digital Age

A documentary that exposes what corporations and governments learn about people through Internet and cell phone usage, and what can be done about it … if anything.

When I decided to watch this, the first thing I thought of was the “South Park” human centipede episode. And sure enough, a clip is shown almost immediately. Great to see these guys have a sense of humor (heck, they even have Willy Wonka and Eddie Izzard).

There are plenty of statistics about how long it would take to read all the fine print that no one really does and how much it is allegedly costing us to agree to these “hidden in plain sight” conditions.

We get a bit of a look at the Patriot Act’s effect on privacy laws, and an even briefer mention of PRISM (which, unfortunately, makes the film a bit dated already, even only a year after it was made). There are even examples of people getting arrested by authorities for their Facebook and Twitter posts. (And one guy — the “steak and cheese” author — who did not!)

Does the film spread paranoia? Does it make Mark Zuckerberg the enemy? To the first question, no. While constantly on the verge of going too far, the film never does, and makes many valid points without ever sounding like a conspiracy theory. As to the second, this is more unclear. Zuckerberg is suggested to be too close to the FBI and other organizations, and certainly Facebook’s privacy settings come under attack. But this is only a superficial reading — the real message is that all tech companies, not just Facebook, are now going this route.

Clear your schedule or check a box and proceed – your choice

With the rise of the internet, and technology in general, it’s no surprise in the influx of documentaries concerning internet freedoms and the legalities of businesses that operate or function heavily online. Intersecting themes with these documentaries are usually personal freedoms, human rights, and a mindset heavily emphasizing individualism and personal accountability. With the recent NSA leak and the upcoming film The Fifth Estate, focusing on WikiLeaks and the Julian Assange controversy, don’t expect this topic to go away any time soon.

Terms and Conditions May Apply focuses on that lengthy, disgustingly long wall of text you’re greeted with every time you register for a website, be it Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, EBay, etc. Consider iTunes, a service I have not used in about four years but one I have fond memories of. The service would update its terms and conditions roughly every five months and you’d be met with immediately when you’d try and buy a song or a piece of media after the new terms and conditions were enacted. All you had to do was check a box saying “I agree” and you could proceed with buying the song. My question: who took the time to read that gargantuan wall of text? Most of it, from what I assumed because hey, I never read it, was legal jargon and stating how I consent to not downloading or illegally distributing this property without written/expressed consent from whatever party in an absurdly verbose fashion. I didn’t care and I don’t think a lot of people did.

But if you were to quiz me on what I was agreeing to, I wouldn’t have a clue. How ignorant is that? I couldn’t tell you any website’s privacy policy and I’m a member of over ten mainstream sites. Director Cullen Hoback elaborates on just what we’re agreeing to and how it can be used against us.

Consider Gamestation, a website that, for one day, stated in its terms and conditions that by agreeing to this wall of text you’d be handing over your immortal soul to the site. In one day, the site collected thousands of souls. It’s an obvious joke, but what if something was hidden in the terms and conditions, surrounded and barricaded by a wall of unrefined, wordy, confusing text that would have a serious impact if it was put into effect? It’s a frightening thought, but it’s usually a deeply subconscious thought that becomes even more hidden when you’re playing that song on iTunes or updating your profile on Facebook.

The film explores privacy policies and what the government and specific companies can see on the internet. Essentially, they can see everything. The opening line of the film is a haunting one stating, “anything that has been digitized is not private and that’s the scary thing.” Interviews are conducted with sociologists, journalists – one of whom Barrett Brown, who has appeared in numerous internet documentaries and is now imprisoned – and many others who state that the internet has become an invaluable resource while simultaneously an intricate tool that can just as easily be used against people.

Statistics noting that companies have lost $250 billion due to fine print lawsuits and it would take you around one-hundred and eighty hours to read the privacy policies of every site you’re a member of. The latter statistic reminds me of a bill that is halted in the U.S. Congress at this time called the “Read the Bills Act,” which, if signed into law, would make it a requirement for Congress to, well, read the bills before they pass them. Ignore the disgusting fact that we need a bill passed for Congress to do their primary job, but what could be the reason that a bill like this needs to exist? One of my guesses is that maybe the bills are bulky and overly-long, leading to much dismay and tedium when reading and analyzing them. Perhaps this is a call for shorter legislation and terms and conditions; ones that are more simple and to-the-point rather than being daunting legal contracts that intimidate rather than inform.

Terms and Conditions May Apply is a good film, albeit far too short. Hoback makes a great case for internet activism and an internet that remains open and constructed by the people rather than by corporations and big government, and things even take a surprisingly personal turn at the end when Hoback attempts to get a word in with Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the website Facebook. The biggest achievement of the documentary, however, is that it’s seventy-nine minutes long but doesn’t deserve the “pamphlet” term I assign to documentaries that take a micro-look at a macro-subject. This is more of a very organized, moderately elaborate Cliff Notes version of a subject.

Directed by: Cullen Hoback.

Important and frightening

This is an important and frightening film, about how Google, Amzaon, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkdin – and IMDb? – harvest our personal information and onsell it to the highest bidder, or to the government. How we don’t read that wodge of text in capitals comprising “Terms and conditions” before we click “Accept” – nobody could, it would take a month per year for everything we sign. But even when that text is brief and written in plain English, it gives those corporations unprecedented power over our personal information – including the right to change the rules without telling us, to increase their power without limit and without asking again, and to keep it forever, even after we have “deleted” it.

The film is entertaining, including how a seven year old boy was interrogated about something he had texted; how an Irishman on holiday in the US never got into the country but spent days in confinement instead, because he had used “destroy America” as a figure of speech in a tweet; how people planning a zombie parade during the Royal Wedding were arrested based on the social media planning; and how a TV crime writer was raided based on his Google searches.

I saw this a few days after “We Steal Secrets: the story of Wikileaks”. It is the better film, letting the facts speak for themselves more.

And now I’m getting paranoid about what will happen to me for writing this….

A Good Day to Die, Hoka Hey Storyline

What is the first thing you think of when the guy behind you gets his legs blown off? What time is it when it hits ‘bomb o’clock’? How do you fall for a woman, who then reveals herself as an assassin? Hoka Hey is a narrative feature, 5 years in the making, documenting the life story and extraordinary adventures of British conflict photographer, Jason P. Howe. He survived 12 years on the front-line of four wars, capturing images of humanity at war, its suffering, and cultures in disarray. His work has been showcased in many of the world’s best-known publications, such as The New York Times, The Telegraph, Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, and many others. It all started with a self-funded trip to Colombia into an area synonymous with drug trafficking and violence. Documenting the brutal war between the left-wing rebel group, FARC, their sworn enemies the military, and the right-wing paramilitary groups, Jason gained the trust of all sides of this scarcely reported war – putting him in a position that few had ever been in. This was just the beginning, his lust for risk awakened; Jason proceeded to put himself in the way of danger in conflicts that have defined the present day. Iraq, Lebanon, and Afghanistan, where he worked extensively with British troops on the front-line are all on his resume. One horrific incident, photographed by Jason, led him to winning the prestigious UK Picture Editors’ Guild Awards- Photographer of the Year and Photo Essay Award. These pictures captured the gripping moments of an IED blast that blew the legs off a British soldier behind him. Ironically, it was the publishing of these pictures in one of Britain’s leading newspapers – The Telegraph – that led to Jason being unofficially banned from the front-line by the British Ministry of Defence, a limiting career move that left him frustrated and disappointed. Jason’s journey exposes the physical and emotional impact of love, loss, friendship, suffering, and disillusionment. Especially the bravery it takes to survive the world at war, and what it takes to get the images published for the world to see. This is not a film about war. This is a story of a man who chose a life of perpetual peril in pursuit of the perfect image. An insight on how passion led to a downward spiral in this crazy tale of survival and change. Jason went down the rabbit hole, and we don’t know if he has fully come back out.—KS

A Good Day to Die, Hoka Hey Movie Reviews

A 90 minute indulgence of ego and self-import

With seemingly no genuinely humble connection to many of the stories behind the photos, this documentary comes across as particularly transactional and false. Perhaps Jason is the only thing Jason loves more than his photos and this 90 minute documentary exercise in self- love stands as a clear testament to this sentiment. Frankly if Jason had taken my photo I would’ve ensured he couldn’t have profiteered from it, as I could think of nothing worse than enriching and emboldening a man who sees himself as such a martyr.

Whilst reflecting on a day when a man lost both of his legs, serving his country, Jason feels the need to reiterate how valued he was in the ensuing CASEVAC, whilst staring forlornly into the middle distance. They shook his hand! Why couldn’t more photo-journo’s be like him?!

I’m glad I chose to rent this documentary rather than to buy it outright. I got a chance to see the footage that I wanted to see, although there wasn’t much of it – plenty of airtime for monologues in CPs and wide angle shots of Jason putting his kit on, though. A boring and self-absorbed piece of work.

Hoka Hey

From FARC to Fedayeen, from Bangkok to Baghdad. Jason leads you through a macabre series of dances with death. Hoka Hey climaxes in the rush of an IED in Helmand and the confrontation with a staid MOD (Ministry of Defence) in London. You return to narco strife and guerilla warfare where your lover packs a pistol. You tag along with your brother who is a Pro Paratrooper in Afghanistan. A rocker fueled life lived under extreme duress, driven by the passion of photojournalism as it transgresses from from film to digital. Then the dissolve to a quiet existence in southern Spain and the battle against PTSD and poverty. Hoka Hey has you hanging in there …

Sobering, respectful, and a testament to the madness of man

With the subject matter being so graphic and visceral, it’s very easy for any doco on conflict to turn into some kind of war porn extravaganza but I’m very happy to say that “A GOOD TO DIE, HOKA HEY” was not that.

In fact, my wife and I were stuck by how the whole film was very reserved, and handled the sensitive subject matter with care and respect. I felt that Jason showed a vulnerable and human side to himself, wracked by years of conflict photography.

It is a very sobering film, and makes you realise how dangerous, silly, and REAL war is.

I was very impressed that the director and writer managed to string together a very strong and cogent thread from Jason’s body cam / helmet cam footage. This is often a very difficult task, and they achieve it brilliantly. It feels like the footage has been shot for the purpose of the film, which is not the case. It often feels sometimes like the viewer is the one wearing the helmet, thus immersing themself in the battlefield and within Jason’s story.

Jason Howe isn’t deified in this film, and neither is he absolved from his own complicity in the consumption of war. He admits it openly. It is a good film about a flawed man, and worth your time.

The Invisible Patients Storyline

THE INVISIBLE PATIENTS tells the story of Jessica Macleod, a nurse practitioner, and four patients she cares for in their homes in Evansville, Indiana. With her laptop satchel and stethoscope, Jessica makes house calls, typically seeing 8-10 patients per day, many of whom live at the outer edges of our healthcare system, unable to visit a doctor’s office due to a combination of multiple chronic conditions, functional impairment, and poverty. Jessica’s work often places her in the center of important healthcare issues facing our country – how to take care of people who fall through the cracks, how to navigate end-of-life care, the confusing maze of health insurance, the burdens placed on families, and the emotional toll on the nurse practitioners like Jessica who often find themselves in dispiriting situations. According to Jessica, “When you go to someone’s house to see them, you’re telling them, ‘I value you enough as a person to come see you where you are.’ Nobody talks about it, but I think these people feel like, ‘I’m kind of special,’ you know? ‘They’re coming to see me, or at least someone cares.'”

Miners Shot Down Storyline

In August 2012, mineworkers in one of South Africa’s biggest platinum mines began a wildcat strike for better wages. Six days into the strike, the police used live ammunition to brutally suppress it, killing 34 and injuring many more. The police insisted that they shot in self-defense. MINERS SHOT DOWN tells a different story, one that unfolds in real time over seven days, like a ticking time bomb. The film weaves together the central point of view of three strike leaders, Mambush, Tholakele and Mzoxolo, with compelling police footage, TV archive and interviews with lawyers representing the miners in the ensuing commission of inquiry into the massacre. What emerges is a tragedy that arises out of the deep fault lines in South Africa’s nascent democracy, of enduring poverty and a twenty year old, unfulfilled promise of a better life for all. A campaigning film, beautifully shot and sensitively told with a haunting soundtrack, MINERS SHOT DOWN reveals how far the African National Congress has strayed from its progressive liberationist roots.

Hard-hitting investigation into the August 2012 Marikana massacre

Director Rehad Desai pulls no punches in this investigation of the events and incidents leading up to the massacre of striking platinum miners at Marikana in August 2012 in which over 100 men were shot, 34 of whom died.

The format of film is relatively straight-forward. After showing live footage of the police opening fire on the striking miners, Desai examines events in the preceding days and also takes us further back to the vexed relationship between the trade unions and the ruling African National Congress in South Africa. While the police hierarchy takes a battering in the location footage shot before the massacre and the hearings held in the aftermath, Desai’s real target is ex- unionist turned multi-millionaire businessman and now deputy president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.

Once a respected figure in the ANC and a crucial component of the transition to democracy that saw South Africa through the trauma and liberation of the 1994 elections. Desai uses what he can get from the eloquent and evasive Ramaphosa to suggest that behind the brutality (and cold-bloodedness in some cases) of the police action, greater forces were at work to break the strike and cauterise the wound that divided the trade unions from their political patrons.

While the commission of inquiry material is rather dry, the interviews are great, but what is most engrossing is the dialogue that one hears (for the first time) between the miners and the police in the days before the massacre.

One could accuse Desai of not presenting the full picture, of not addressing, for example, the stories that suggest the miners had gathered with an intention to engage in conflict with the police. But I’m with Emile de Antonio on this one: objectivity is a myth and there is no such thing as an unbiased documentary. Desai delivers a provocation, a call to consider the cost of government and capital turning their combined power on the poor.

Ukraine Is Not a Brothel Storyline

Ukraine’s topless feminist sensation Femen has stirred up a press frenzy across Europe. Outraged by the world’s image of Ukrainian women as either brides for sale or commodities of sex tourism, Femen bare their breasts in protest in order to disrupt this perception and agitate these brutal patriarchal forces. Now, for the first time, ‘Ukraine Is Not A Brothel’ offers an intimate glimpse inside the world’s most provocative feminist organisation. A movement that began in the snow-filled streets of a corrupt, post-Soviet Ukraine, Femen’s naked war against patriarchy is gaining momentum across Europe. But before they take the world by storm, these bold and beautiful women must first confront the perverse and contradictory forces that power their own ‘titillating’ feminist organisation.—Anonymous

Come for the titties, stay for the deeper understanding of feminism: A Male Review

A no-holds-barred exploration of the ever fascinating minefield at the intersection of sex and politics, this documentary is a must-see for anyone who considers him- or herself a feminist. That is, anybody who thinks women deserve as much respect and consideration as men do. And anyone who doesn’t, simply does not belong in this century.

As a red-blooded heterosexual male, I found the role of Victor Sviatsky, the male leader of Femen, especially thought-provoking. It made me acutely aware of my own complex response to these sexy feminists. How do I reconcile the animal and the human in me? Can I be both at the same time? What is the right ratio of testosterone to estrogen, to have both desire and empathy, and is there a conflict between the two? How do I maintain eye contact when breasts are on display? Eternal questions and lifelong struggles, all of these.

Meanwhile the females of Femen are truly awe-inspiring. They are brave, intelligent and beautiful. Here in the West, we have popular comedians like Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer who push the envelope and bring new awareness to feminist issues, all while making us laugh and earning a living. This would not work in Ukraine, Russia, or much of the world for that matter. Not yet, anyway. There women have to get naked or get arrested, or both, to be heard.

Whether you see these women as heroes or exhibitionists, – and they could be both, – this doc deserves your attention. To say that you will never look at a naked woman the same again might be an exaggeration. We will still be animals, deep inside. But this film will certainly help you not to regard women as pieces of meat, even when they are naked and sexy, and should be a required viewing for that reason alone.

As a minor criticism, the soundtrack could be more judicious. “Kalinka” and Boney M. don’t help this film to be taken seriously.

Best wishes, love and respect go out to the filmmaker and the formidable women of Ukraine.

Interesting but feels a little stretched out

This has been something I’ve wanted to watch for ages, but only finally found. Kitty Green’s a very interesting filmmaker/documentarian, but her other films (Casting JonBenet and The Assistant) are definitely better than this one, which was her first feature.

It’s a very interesting topic, and has only become more topical in recent years. I think it explores the basic idea behind the protests well, and the way it looks at some of their shortcomings as well as accomplishments makes it more neutral and thought-provoking than it would be if the message was clear and more one-sided.

I just don’t know if there’s enough here to warrant a feature length documentary. It runs out of steam quite a while before it ends, but much of what comes before it starts to get repetitive is very interesting – I think it could have been a great short documentary.

Frontline still gathers a ton of info, but now it has become very biased

PBS and Frontline some years ago tried to present topics fairly and then add some progressive bias to the topics. But overall you felt like you were seeing valid claims and ideas presented. Unfortunately, right now it’s not an unbiased presentation of any one topic. They are now very much ideologically biased and it makes some episodes at best questionable and at worst very misleading.

In this episode the heavily ideological talking heads don’t even make much sense. You already have a ton of negative depictions of Alex Jones from the media. They want to make him seem conspiratorial and weird and the videos from the various events he went full-on passion in do just that. But then we get talking heads budding in with claims about: White men, racist, sexist, violent, dangerous. All without using any claims from the video sources. We never actually see any violence caused from Alex Jones’ ideas. We just hear various talking heads proclaim that it is so and that we must fear it. We don’t hear Alex Jones say a single racist thing in the doc and he doesn’t say anything at all about women. Yet the talking heads proclaim him racist and sexist. And the most ideologically biased and extreme talking head is a PBS employee just spewing out accusations left and right with no evidence. I’m scratching my head at this. You can’t fight conspiracy with conspiratorial claims.

Obviously no one believes Alex Jones. I’m ready to see a well-made critical documentary about him and look into his wrong claims. But this documentary only attacks conspiracies by him while it supports any crazy claim against him. So in reality it actually made me question the counterclaims in the documentary and made me more sympathetic to a person I didn’t trust one bit before. You really ought to present a fair picture of reality for me to accept that you are telling truth. Frontline has picked one point of view now and it has become pretty cringe overall. But if you remove all talking heads I think this would still work very well as a documentary. The talking heads issue is their main issue for most of their new documentaries.

This Little Land of Mines Storyline

This Little Land of Mines is an independent feature documentary about the resilience of the Lao people as they live among and work to clear 80 million unexploded bombs from when the United States secretly bombed Laos more heavily than any country on earth.

Awesome

Wonderful documentary, cant wait for more upcoming projects! I have followed Erin for a while and got to see this a few months ago, very happy with the watch!

Important story, beautifully told

An incredibly powerful and informative documentary. It is harrowing to think of the devastation Laos has suffered as a country and how little this has been publicised. This is a really important story and it’s been told extremely well by the film makers and people involved.

Yet another piece of buried history!

The opening scene is EXCELENT, for it leaves no doubt in the viewers’ mind about the HYPOCRISY of US politicians! Having heard the moving speech by JFK, the question ONE MUST ASK is WHY then Laos is now ‘The little land of American mines’?

Unexploded bombs are certainly a problem; but if you think this is bad, well, THINK AGAIN! What about the loss of lives and properties that had occurred during those bombings? To those who still have DOUBTS about this “secretive” US-Laos War the film-makers have one surprise for them — a confession by President Obama made while officially visiting Laos in 2016. (segment between 44min.20sec. & 45min.46sec.) For me, his generous offer of $90 million over 3 years is NOWHERE AS INTERESTING AS his admittance: “…it was a secret war and for years the American people did not know. Even now, many Americans are not fully aware of this chapter in our history…” CAN’T HELP WONDERING WHY THAT IS SO, AND HOW THAT CAN EVEN BE POSSIBLE.

As to why this historic trip was made by Obama and why a generous sum was offered, watch the film really carefully and pay attention to what the president and reporters say OR ELSE the effort of the film-makers will go to waste! (segment between 50min.30sec. & 51min.28sec.) What’s not intended to be seen/heard won’t be shown — a rule of thumb in documentary making.
