Belle Du Seigneur Storyline

In Geneva in the 1930s; Solal and Ariane meets at a party. Their lives differ as day and night. Ariane is a young married aristocrate from a Protestant family from Geneva. Solal is a Jewish diplomat who rises from nothing to the second highest position in the League of Nations on the eve of the Second World War. Ariane is none other than the wife of his subordinate, Adrien. But they are carried away by their fervent love and must not only undergo the hostility of the rest of the world but also deal with their own problems. Solal is plagued by obsessive love and Ariane is swept away by a passionate and physical love. And Solal hides a dark part of his personality. But their love is based on fundamental understanding. He loves the thought of Ariane, she loves the reality of Solal.

Belle Du Seigneur Movie Reviews

The film is unfortunately a deceptive adaptation of this great and complicate XXth century love story novel by Albert Cohen. Some women friends of mine commented, it’s pretty unconceivable to understand how a male writer could so well understand and describe and write (about) woman’s psychology, woman’s inside.

I loved the book a lot but not the film, pretty poor. I like Meyers as an actor but here, imho, he looks too young (he was 35 then) as Solal, even if Solal had a vertiginous social climb.

At about 31 minutes into the film, we can see a very nice wood house at the Geneva lake. I knew the (unnice) owners so I went there once or twice. For the ones interested, you can see it in Promenthoux at 46.391986° 6.267007° in Google Maps.

No no and no

Belle du seigneur (the book) is the most beautiful declaration of love I’ve ever read so obviously I was intrigued when I saw that the movie existed. What a disappointment. The actors are terrible. (Particularly Natalia Vodianova… seriously ?!). The movie can’t even begin to describe Ariane and Solal’s passion.

Portrayal of young woman as vulnerable idiot and man as obsessive manic-depressive

An arrogant, overly dramatic young man who we are perhaps supposed to admire because he reacts to moral outrages in a way that would be expected of the morally honourable, forms a sexual relationship with the exceedingly beautiful wife of an underling in the same organisation. She, for reasons that are never clear, but may be attributed to the fact she looks about 18, instantly falls for this unknown man who makes it clear he (1)is supposedly madly in love with a person he has never actually spoken to and (2) intends to have sex with her in spite of the fact she is married. Her idiot of a husband disappears early on in the story, and they have a up and down relationship in which our hero repeatedly expresses his insecurity about our heroine’s love for him by suggesting she would not love him if he wasn’t a handsome young man. He has sex with another woman, but that us fine because it doesn’t mean anything. She lies about having sex with another man and our hero acts like a jealous, abusive idiot. Stopped watching at about this point, two-thirds of the way through. All in all a daft story about a silly young woman and an obsessive idiot.
