The Scavengers Movie Reviews

Despite its low budget a very interesting film

This is not just another movie about the American Civil War, it’s a special one. True, it’s very low budget and that can sometimes irritate you. But if you cast away that minor irritations, there’s plenty to enjoy. The movie is about the period only months after the Civil War ended. A Southern captain never told his men that the war was over, so they go on with their killing and raping. They go to a place where the Yankees will pass with a gold transport and they wait for a chance to get the gold. They expect 300.000 dollars, but the actual amount is much less, somewhere around 2400 dollars. The captain tortures a soldier and rapes his future wife and her (black) servant till he will tell where the rest of the gold is. (Of course, it isn’t there. They only transported lots of gold during the War and the war is over now.)

The movie came out in the same year as The Wild Bunch and there are a few similarities. Like Peckinpah’s movie there are no real good guys and bad guys. The Southern soldiers don’t know the war is over. When you hear what happened to the captain, you’ll understand his hate for the Yankees and black people. You can’t really say the black servant is protected by her mistress and her soldier. The black people in a nearby town have some part in the story, but their intentions aren’t noble either. Which is true about most wars: it’s difficult to say who are the good guys.

Another similarity between The Scavengers and The Wild Bunch is that the slow motion technique is used in both movies. Though Sam Peckinpah gets most of the credit for this technique, it’s only fair to say that the slow motion scenes are better used in this movie. Especially in one of the rape scenes it’s very effective and quite nauseating.

Which is a nice link to my remark that there’s lot of nudity in the movie, maybe even a bit too much. With a little less naked breasts and a bit more money The Scavengers could have become a classic. Now it’s a very interesting cult movie.

If “The Scavengers” was a “spaghetti western” it would be one of the better ones ….

Despite a very low budget, and some marginal acting, “The Scavengers” intriguing script pushes the film into above average territory. There is a gritty feel throughout, brief nudity, at least a bunch of Negro degradation, several Civil War tunes, and a story you haven’t seen before. Keeping his renegade gang of Southern soldiers as uninformed as possible, Jonathan Bliss leads them on a mission to rob a Union payroll wagon. When the robbery takes place, only a fraction of the expected booty is found. Prisoners are tortured and women raped in a misguided attempt to gain information on the missing money. A slow motion shootout decides the outcome, and a very satisfying ending features real scavengers with beaks and wings. Interesting for sure. – MERK

So Very Close To Amazing

A few months after the Civil War, a megalomaniac Rebel captain pushes his remaining troops to keep up the fight…without telling them the war is over. He plans to hijack a Union wagon with 300K in gold. With the war over and the payroll decreased, however, the haul comes out to 3k. The captain steadfastly believes there must be more gold and pursues a campaign of rape and torture to find out where the rest of it is.

Belief and frustration dominate this movie. In many ways, it makes some truly profound statements about the tension between them. There is no more gold and will never be any more gold. And even though the Union captain explains it all logically and concisely to the Confederate captain, the Confederate captain simply refuses to believe it. It’s an existential stalemate brought vividly to life at the end of movie with the Confederate captain trapped under his horse and left to die.

John Bliss’ performance creeps you out. He carries the entire movie with grace and malice. So much so that it brings out how amateurish the other actors are. Even so, the low budget tends to work in favor of the film, bringing a grittiness that more money would have taken away from it.

Where the low budget didn’t work, though, is in the editing. At several points in the film, most noticeably in the rape of the maid, they copy/paste comments made just seconds earlier. It might be an interesting technique but it’s too clumsy to have not been sloppy.

My other main complaint is the “slave as cannibals” speech given by the captain. My eyes literally rolled into the back of my head. A simple, brutal massacre of his family would have been much more effective.

I really enjoyed this film, despite it’s glaring flaws. I’m not a big proponent of remakes, but I’d love to see this remade.

The Hook Storyline

During an evacuation in the waning days of the Korean War, three American soldiers retrieve an enemy airman and take him prisoner aboard the civilian ship returning them to their lines. When an order comes down from their superiors to kill the prisoner, the sergeant in charge, Briscoe, orders his men, Dennison and Hackett, to carry out the execution. But first one and then the other refuse to follow the order. A tense stand-off ensues between the seemingly heartless sergeant and his conscience-stricken men.—Jim Beaver

The Hook Movie Reviews

“Any Day A War Ends Is A Nice Day”

It’s 1953 in the wee small hours of the Korean War winding down. While the peace talks proceed slowly at Panmunjom, the UN forces are evacuating their positions as the truce lines come into being. But the fighting still goes on. Another Korean War film, Pork Chop Hill, also dealt with this time of the war which President Truman called a police action.

A Korean pilot in a MIG Jet attacks some US soldiers who are loading supplies on a freighter and only three of them survive, Kirk Douglas, Robert Walker, Jr., and Nick Adams. Later on the pilot of the MIG is shot down and he’s picked up by the freighter that the three soldiers are on with the supplies which includes a lot of barrels of oil.

Radioing for instructions, Kirk Douglas is told by a South Korean major to kill the North Korean pilot. He’s certainly up for it, he’s a veteran from this war and World War II. Walker doesn’t want to and Adams is kind of on the fence because he’s personally loyal to Douglas who got him out of a jam once.

The majority of The Hook is spent on the conflict between the three GIs. It’s a rather unreal story because these three would be up for war crimes charges, Walker realizes this best. But two wars against oriental people have given Douglas some pronounced views on the subject. The holes in the script are covered up by the performances of the cast.

Nehemiah Persoff turns in a fine performance as the ship’s captain who on his ship is the one in charge. But the best acting is done by Filipino player Enrique Magalona as the confused and frightened North Korean prisoner.

Pork Chop Hill is a better film, but The Hook is not a bad one. The ending is ironic to say the least.

Intense Korean War drama featuring Kirk Douglas, from director George Seaton

Directed by George Seaton, with a screenplay by Henry Denker that was based on a novel by Vahé Katcha, this intense Korean War drama appropriately features Kirk Douglas as Sergeant P.J. Briscoe, who’s tasked with executing a North Korean pilot prisoner he refers to as ‘the gook’ (Enrique Magalona, in one of only three films in which he appeared). The prisoner, who had just killed Lieutenant Troy (Mark Miller) in a bombing raid before crash landing himself, is humanly rescued by Private O.A. Dennison (Robert Walker Jr., son of his same named actor father and actress Jennifer Jones, in his film debut), who’s more intelligent than your ‘average joe’. Nick Adams plays Pvt. V.R. Hackett, the only other member of this group, who’s beholden to Briscoe for reasons to be revealed. The military personnel were collecting a stash of fuel which has to be transported to where it’s needed by a civilian charter vessel, run by Finnish Captain Van Ryn (Nehemiah Persoff). When Briscoe calls into HQ, he learns that a school and a hospital were just bombed by the enemy and is ordered, by the South Korean officer now in charge, to dispose of his prisoner of war, who Van Ryn had made bunkmate of the others. So, the film is an emotional and psychological thriller as the three discuss the required act and the fate of their prisoner.

Briscoe has but a short time left to serve before he can retire at 40 with a full pension, even though he has no one to go home to, as Dennison discovers. He’s a hard man whose father and military experience has convinced him that weakness means death. Briscoe has taken Dennison under his wing, but rides him while trying to instill these same values. At the same time, Briscoe has ‘control’ of Hackett, who used to be a Corporal but was bucked down to Private by the Sergeant who was ‘protecting’ him after a drunken brawl with another officer; this, however, turns out to have been a self serving act. At different times, each of the men tries to kill the prisoner, but each finds killing another man face-to-face more difficult than expected. Dennison is the humanist whose words ‘work’ on the other two and the two Privates actually try to free their prisoner. The ship’s captain and crew doesn’t get involvement per their neutrality in the conflict. Later, when Briscoe is about to report their combined insubordination to their superiors, they learn that a cease-fire had been called, effectively letting them off ‘the hook’ for not following orders. But they’d left their prisoner alone; knowing his fate, he escapes and then tries to sabotage the ship full of oil barrels. The language barrier not only prevents the Americans from telling the North Korean about the armistice, but it leads to his own tragic ending.

Unexpectedly Compelling

I enjoy watching movies and will most often make a selection because of the actors, then maybe because of the theme, or occasionally because of a recommendation. “The Hook” is a movie that I had never heard of, so seeing Kirk Douglas on the cover is what hooked me for this war movie. Also Robert Walker Jr is someone that I first saw in TV’s _”Star Trek” (1966) {Charlie X (#1.2)}_ (qv) playing a 17yr boy, so what would he be like in a movie produced 3 years earlier.

The opening of this movie includes “This is a story of men in war, not men at war. And the two are not the same.” To understand my view, I am a baby-boomer who has never served in the military, but I have known many who have served. Most of these men don’t really talk about their experiences, so I often wonder if my views on war movies would be very different of those people who have served. My preference would be that countries would not be at war, but regardless of this I believe we need to support those who chose to serve in the roles in which they are assigned.

“The Hook” is a title that showed no relevance before I watched the movie, and I never did catch. Is this an anti-war movie, or a personal interaction story, or war conflict drama, and this question repeats itself for 90 minutes. Regardless the movie itself is compelling. We are engaged with three surviving servicemen vacating a military post upon a ‘neutral’ merchant vessel, plus an enemy retrieved after he has bailed from his failing aircraft. Your journey is to imagine your response to their scenarios. Would you have rescued the enemy at all? How would you treat him on this merchant ship? Just imagine how you would respond to engaging an enemy on the battlefield; how is it different or the same, across an eating table? Kirk Douglas, Robert Walked, and Nick Adams are the enlisted men facing these scenarios.

I enjoyed this movie, in spite of moments of “I wouldn’t do that!”. The movie is a must for Kirk Douglas fans, and highly recommended for anyone interested in war movies. I don’t know if actual enlisted people would behave this way, but “The Hook” is wonderfully acted and does not need the tonnage of special effects that are today’s production norms.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse Movie Reviews

A performance from the Ford production line…

Vincente Minnelli’s updating of Vicente Blasco Ibanez’s novel is an absorbing melodrama which, as another viewer has noted, must have been watched by Visconti before he made his film The Damned a few years later.

The film begins with the Desnoyers family gathering for dinner following the return of Heinrich (Karl Boehm) from a spell in Germany where, to the disgust of grandfather Julio, he has been indoctrinated into the ideology of the Nazi party. The grandfather is played by Lee J. Cobb and it’s a blessing that the old boy pegs it during dinner because Cobb not only chews the scenery but the sets and props as well. Despite this, the lines are clearly drawn between the two sides of the family: Heinrich and his father Karl (Paul Lukas) on one side, Julio No’ 2 (Glenn Ford) and little sister Chi Chi (Yvette Mimieux) on the other.

Julio is a playboy with no interest in the war; he prowls swish parties for available women, sidling between arguments of the impending war as he closes in on his prey. Sadly, Ford, usually a likable enough leading man, doesn’t possess the necessary predatory swagger to pull of the role. In fact, he is so badly miscast that he seems to be adrift throughout the film, as if trying to figure out how he was ever chosen for the role (Minnelli wanted Alain Delon, apparently, and we can only imagine what an altogether different interpretation he would have given to the part).

The predicament in which the Desnoyer family find themselves is wholly absorbing as the war slowly tears its members apart. Most imaginable sea-changes in personal opinions are explored during the course of the story, from the discovery of a hidden integrity on Julio’s part, to disillusion on the part of Karl, the WW1 veteran who allows himself to be swept up in the triumphalism of the Nazi’s rise only to find his son becoming irrevocably morally corrupted by the same experiences.

The movie never won any awards, which is probably how it should be, but it provides an intelligent and literary exploration of a fascinating subject that makes it easy to watch despite its bloated running time.

Awakening in Times of War

In Argentina, the family man Julio Madariaga (Lee J. Cobb) is the patriarch of his family and considers his farm the paradise on Earth. One of his daughters, Luisa Desnoyers (Harriet MacGibbon), has married the Frenchman immigrant Marcelo Desnoyers (Charles Boyer) and they have one son, the playboy Julio (Glenn Ford), and one daughter, the gorgeous student of Sorbonne Chi Chi (Yvette Mimieux). His other daughter, Elena von Hartrott (Kathryn Givney), has married the German Karl von Hartrott (Paul Lukas), and they have three sons: Heinrich (Karl Boehm), Gustav and Franz.

In 1938, Heinrich returns from Germany for a family reunion and when he tells that he has joined the SS, the displeased Julio Madariaga has a heart attack and dies. When France is occupied by the Germans, the family reunites in Paris and Franz is the Nazi administrator in France. The alienated Julio has a studio where he paints, and has a love affair with Marguerite Laurier (Ingrid Thulin), the wife of the owner of a newspaper Etienne Laurier (Paul Henreid) that is fighting in Belgium. Meanwhile Chi Chi joins the French resistance and is arrested. Julio uses the influence of his uncle Franz to release her. However, Chi Chi has an argument with Julio for his neutral position. When Chi Chi is tortured to death by Gestapo, Julio joins the resistance, using his relationship with the Germans to get inside information.

“The 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse” is an epic romance with the awakening of a playboy in times of war. The cinematography, art direction and costumes are amazing, but unfortunately the screenplay is shallow and the film is miscast in the lead role. Glenn Ford is never convincing as a French-Argentinean, and too old (46 years old) to be a playboy and son of Charles Boyer (63 years old). Further, it is ridiculous the actors and actresses speaking in English forcing accents in French, German and Spanish. I have never had the chance to see the 1921 original film to compare with this remake by Vincente Minnelli. My vote is six.

Title (Brazil): “Os Quatro Cavaleiros do Apocalipse” (“The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”)

Minnelli’s version tries to be ‘more’ than a war or anti-war film…

Vincente Minnelli brought his aspiring “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” to the events of World War II… The new version tries to be ‘more’ than a war or anti-war film…

The quality of the Argentinean family with its members fighting on both sides (French and German), revealed great nationalism in their habits of thought and expression… They arouse love and ideal even in their attitudes, interests and actions to each others… They put everything at the stake, specifically two important talents, Julio (Glenn Ford) and Heinrich (Karl Boehm), trapped in this entertaining remake of “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”

Karl Boehm, the ambitious Colonel Heinrich, member of the S.S. envies his cousin’s independence… The dinner sequence makes it evident: When Heinrich sees his charming cousin, spending pleasant time with a beautiful woman, he warns General Von Kleig (George Dolenz), not to abuse excessively his rank as Commander of Paris in his own private interest…

The film describes the awakening of a wealthy high-living Franco-Argentinean to his duty to France after his sister is killed by the Gestapo and his father implored him to act and do what he never did… Julio finds his manhood as a member of the French resistance during War World II.

I Dutifully Report Movie Reviews

Great movie, if you know the history behind it

First thing I must mention is, that I am from Czech Republic and i’ve read the book, therefore my opinion may be a bit skewed. Despite of it all, I think this movie is brilliant comedy and nicely shows the absurdity of the first world war from perspective of Austria-Hungarian soldier. It shows life as it went on in that period of time and manages to throw in a few jokes for those, who know how it all ended up. Often times it is said, that Švejk is the archetype of every Czech person and even though I’m not sure if I agree, he is the source of comedy and drama in the movie. If you dislike the main character, there’s almost no point in watching the movie, but Švejk grew into my heart. He is your guide through these times, and the fact that you don’t know, if he is cunning or stupid enforces the comedy. All things considered, it’s and amazing historical movie and a solid comedy, with absurdity as it’s main topic.

I am from the USA and I love this film.

My tastes run counter to those of my fellow countrymen, it would seem. I have been watching films from all over the world all my life. At least half of the films I view and review are from other countries. Having said that it is not necessary to have a foreign background to watch this historical comedy. You only need the patience to read the subtitles. A pause button may be helpful.

Legendary movie

I read review of this movie from planktonrules and I have to disagree. It is one of the best old czech comedy, but you have to know history, you have to understand czech jokes based on czech language. You have to know czech actor legends who played in it. You have to know book from Hasek, who create Svejk. Maybe You have to be czech. Its logical that American doesn’t see magic of this movie but we all in central europe laugh from start to end. This is one of movies which cannot be filmed again and better. In this time you are not be able to find places of old Prague which are authentic. In this movie Prague looks beautiful. It is many reasons why I like this movie.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Movie Reviews

Fantastic boredom

Normally I should have expect nothing less from movie based video games but this case I have to do it.

And there is not much to say about this game from Marvel Fantastic Four.

The game is based off the movie Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer the sequel to the 2005 Fantastic Four motion picture based off the Marvel Comics characters Reed Richards AKA Mr.Fantastic, Susan Storm AKA Invincible Woman, Her brother Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch and Ben Grimm AKA The Thing.

However after the first level you will become so bored and this is not a lie I’m selling.

Yes I only played the game on the Playstation 2 but it was enough to say clear away from the game on other platforms.

The style of the game feels like a Role Playing game like the X-Men Legends games which I haven’t played yet where you can play as anyone of the Fantastic Four

But that being said the game just get boring after the first level and after that just turn the game it just don’t have anything to appeal you long enough to even want to play it.

The controls are like slugs, the graphics are just plain at best the camera zoom so far away that you can’t see the action that take place in the game so often you relay on good luck the voice acting is just uninspiring the actors don’t feel like they should and the game play is just awful

Just do yourself a favor and avoid this game no matter how Fantastic cheap it is.

I give Fantastic Four Rise Of The Silver Surfer an 3 out of 10

Great game

This a great game, it’s old, but it’s still fun to play (My opinion)

worst sequel

So if you have just read my review of the previous game I always said that that game is underrated but not even its sequel and together with the film it is based on it is one of the worst superhero games Then this game does all the wrong things i.e. It doesn’t have the same onething that the first game had But why does it change a lot of all the things it had Yet in the three spider-man games they were attracted by Sam Laini’s films let’s not change all the things To say the second II and third have changed compared to the first but no very much has for example that there was no longer ifyou fall down you die but with this Fantastic 4 game they have everything changes for example there is no longer that playability for two players why remove it and then if the graphics of the first one were not as good as graphics but this second one is much worse then it is because there are only three bosses in the other gamethere were more Bosses to face It’s incredible this video game does the same thing as polymer clay i.e. Making everything worse please just play the first game and throw this sequel somewhere else to conclude rating 4.

The Chessplayer Movie Reviews

A finely crafted film , set in Nazi time , with romance , intense drama and historical background

Moving and attractive melodrama about an obstinate man , a chess player , who becomes involved in several problems when is accused as a spy in the Nazi invaded France . It starts in 1934 Diego Padilla (Marc Clotet) wins the Spanish Championship of Chess and finds his friend Javier Sánchez (Alejo Sauras) , the latter introduces him a French reporter , Marianne Latour (Melina Matthews) , and subsequently they fall in love , marry and they have a daughter . At the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) , Marianne convinces Diego to live in Paris with their daughter, where shortly afterwards Diego will be framed of spying by the Nazis and imprisoned in a Gestapo prison.

Wonderful adaptation of the novel by the prestigious writer Stefan Zweig to the big screen . A stirring and romantic flick with dramatic events, thrills, emotion, betrayal and a love story. There are numerous historical remarks about Spanish Republic , Stalinist period and Nazi time. Interpretations are uniformly decent. The yarn is very nice set, packing luxurious cinematography by cameraman Juan Carlos Gómez , evocative musical score by Alejandro Vivas , great production design and glamorous costumes. The production values and settings of the show are also outstanding : buildings , halls , jails , all of them with colorful photography and flawlessly selected locations and costumes make us travel in time to the most convulsive times in the history of the 20th century . I was really impressed to see how the two protagonists filled up the screen so wholehartedly . Stars Marc Clotet as a stubborn young man called Diego who will try to survive in a hostile environment thanks to SS Colonel Maier’s passion for chess and Melina Matthews as the romantic heroine . And good secondary cast , such as : Alejo Saura is pretty fine as the astute communist who falls in distress , Andrés Gertrúdix as an unfortunate prisoner , Stefan Weinert in his usual role as a Nazi officer ,Pau Durà as Commandant Hernández , Mike Hoffmann as Sergeant Kauffman , Maarten Dannenberg as Corporal Reinke , among others .

The motion picture was competently directed by Luis Oliveiras and inspiring by historical events about the Spanish Civil conflict and German encroachment on France (1940-1945) . Luis had budget enough thanks to important producer Gerardo Herrero that financed lavishly this enjoyable movie . Oliveiras is a good craftsman with an interesting career , his film debut was Pata Negra , though he has made a lot of TV episodes of popular series , such as : La Valla , Estoy Vivo , Alatriste , Manolita Gafotas , La Huella Del Crimen and El Angel De Budapest.

Pojat Movie Reviews

A portrait of relationship between Finnish civilians and German groups during the Second World War

The best role of the promising young actor Vesa-Matti Loiri. Also, the director has gained the spirit of the original manuscript telling about the relationship between Finnish civilians and German groups during the Second World War.

Growing up during wartime. Fun, fun and sorrow

“Pojat” (“lads or boys”) is prehaps the director Mikko Niskanen at his very best, in spite of the fact that he has done some other good films too. It tells the story about five teenage-boys in the city of Oulu in northern Finland during the so called Continuation war (1941-1944, a continuation to the Winter war 39-40). The second world war was a very difficult time for Finland and the poverty is obvious. But that fact is not a problem for these boys; the war doesn’t mean real war for them cause they’re so young. It’s more of a big adventure (compare with the British movie “Hope And Glory”). They admire the German alpine-troopers who travel through their city on the way to the front. The presence of the Germans offers interesting opportunities for these boys: they sale and trade things with the German soldiers. At the other hand they go to school and try to live a normal life during a war, just like the normal teenagers they are. The patriotism in Finland at that time is strong and the director catches that spirit very skillfully. In many scenes the viewer forgets that it’s a movie. Pojat is not theater; it’s a quite realistic description of life at the home-front during the war.

The acting is very convincing. The main-characters differ a bit from each other just like in Paavo Rintala’s novel “Pojat”. All the persons are individuals as in in real life. Vesa Matti Loiri makes an especially strong impression as Jake, a sensitive boy who’s not as “rough” as the other boys, probably because of his situation at home. The music is mostly played with flute; it relives the movie’s spirit.

Pojat is a very entertaining (at least for Finnish viewers) but also a tragic film. You don’t forget that there’s a war going on while watching it. Some scenes feel a bit melodramatic and exaggerated, but the overall impression is good. I recommend “Pojat” specially for Finnish viewers, but also for older people. Maybe for somebody who grew up during the war.

Lives of young boys during the war

Pojat (1962) is set in Oulu.It shows us the gang of five boys during the second world war.German soldiers have arrived and the boys sell them beer and cigarettes.Soon they realize those Nazies aren’t such nice guys.Mikko Niskanen is the director of this wonderful movie that’s based on Paavo Rintala’s novel.Young Vesa-Matti Loiri is one of the boys playing Jake. This was his first movie becoming later a well known comedian.Pentti Tarkiainen is Immu, Uti Saurio is Pate, Hannu Vironmäki is Matti Korpi and Markku Söderström is Urkki.Liisa Nevalainen plays Jake’s mother and Kauko Helovirta is Uncle Fritz. The marvelous Olavi Ahonen is Priest Pisa. The now 85- years old Tapio Hämäläinen is Head of school. The late Matti Pellonpää is in his first movie as schoolboy. The movie is filled with great scenes, some dramatic, some comedic. The mood is very tense at the nocturnal forest where the boys are with their skis. One funny one is when the boys make a farce of President Mannerheim’s birthday where even Hitler showed up.Then the ending scene is the most remembered.Vesa-Matti Loiri runs after the train trying to catch his mother who’s leaving with the German. He grabs on the train but can’t hold on for too long.He stays crying on the tracks and the train moves further and further away…

Black Rain Movie Reviews

Not one of my favorite Imamura films, but powerful, most certainly

Shohei Imamura’s account of the bombing of Hiroshima and its aftermath. Kazuo Kitamura and Etsuko Ichihara play a middle aged couple who, along with their niece, Yoshiko Tanaka, live on the outskirts of Hiroshima when the atomic bomb is dropped. They live with minor injuries while they explore the horrific aftermath (shown in three different segments, the latter two being flashbacks). The Hiroshima segments in the film are absolutely devastating, just horrifyingly graphic. The bulk of the film takes place five years later. The uncle is trying to negotiate his niece’s marriage, but she is tainted in public opinion because of her presence at Hiroshima (people assume she’s not healthy, as many other people who were there are not). The film is quietly devastating. I wouldn’t consider it one of Imamura’s masterpieces, but it’s a fine film. Tanaka, in particular, is brilliant, and I loved the score. The black and white cinematography is quite pretty, too.

Shows deep compassion for humanity

Shohei Imamaura’s Black Rain was released in 1989 just at the onset of the AIDS epidemic, a fact that gives the film about the slow deterioration of Hiroshima radiation victims an added poignancy. The black rain in the title refers to the combination of ash, radioactive fallout, and water that fell one or two hours after the explosion. There have been other books and films about the dropping of the atomic bomb but none as unique and powerful as this one. Based on a novel by Masuji Ibuse who gathered information from interviews and the diaries of real-life bomb victims, the film depicts how an entire family is affected psychologically as well as physically by the bomb years after the original explosion. It is a horrifying vision but one that resonates with deep compassion for humanity.

The film begins in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 as soldiers and civilians go about their normal daily activities. Suddenly a blinding light flashes and a thunderous blast is heard. Almost every single building is destroyed or damaged beyond repair. The first atomic bomb ever dropped on a city is now a part of history. Survivors must somehow restart their lives, unaware of the bomb’s devastating after effects. Filmed in high-contrast black and white, the story centers around Yasuko (Yoshiko Tanaka), a young woman who is caught in the radioactive rain as her boat heads back to the city to search for friends and relatives. In Hiroshima, Imamura shows us indelible images that remain with us: a young boy with skin hanging from his body pleads with his brother to recognize him, an older man is in tears over his inability to free his son from piles of debris, a mother is in torment as she rocks the blackened body of her child.

When the family returns to their rural home, Yasuko’s life is forever changed. She sees her friends dying around her and waits for the inevitable bouts of radiation sickness that have already affected her Uncle Shigematsu Shimuza (Kazuo Kitamura) and Aunt Shigeko Shimuza (Etsuko Ichihara). Pretending that there is only business as usual, the family denies that the bomb has affected Yasuko. “She forgot how Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed. Everyone forgot it. They forget the hell of fire and go to rallies like an annual festival. I’m sick of it,” says a friend Katayama (Akiji Kobayashi). Yasuko internalizes the tragedy, feeling shame for being different than others and guilty for being contaminated.

When her aunt and uncle try to find her a husband, the eligible men refuse to marry her because of suspicions about her health, even though Shigematsu has copied her diary to prove that she wasn’t directly exposed to the bomb. The only suitor she feels comfortable with is another damaged man, Yuichi (Keisuke Ishida), who has a panic attack every time he hears the roar of an engine. At the end, the beauty of life shows itself ever so fleetingly when Yasuko goes to the pond and sees a sight she has been longing for all her life, the king carp jumping in the water, playfully as if to say that beyond despair there is still joy. Sadly we hear on the radio statements by politicians about using the bomb once again in the Korean War. “Human beings learn nothing”, says Shigematsu. “They strangle themselves. Unjust peace is better than a war of justice. Why can’t they see?” Immamura’s Black Rain has hopefully allowed all of us to see more clearly.

terror and pity

The opening of Imamura’s masterpiece avoids mere sensationalism in its depiction of the unfathomably horrifying events of August 6th, 1945, in which 90% of Hiroshima and tens of thousands of lives were annihilated in an instant. Instead, Imamura emphasizes the unprecedented strangeness of the catastrophe, focusing on such portentous images as the diabolic mushroom cloud louring silently in the distance and the black rain that spatters a beautiful young woman’s face. The rest of the film traces the ramifications of the latter incident, bringing the atomic holocaust and its aftermath (over 100,000 people died of radiation poisoning) down to the intelligible level of the plight of Yasuko (Yoshiko Tanaka) and her small “community bound by the bomb.”

The survivors strive for normalcy and continuity, most notably by attempting to find a suitable marriage for Yasuko, but the imminent possibility of radiation sickness shadows every aspect of their lives. Yasuko’s potential suitors, naturally enough, shy away from a young woman, no matter how attractive, who might suddenly grow sick and die. Genuine love, when it finally does appear, does so unexpectedly and ambiguously. We are left wondering if love across class lines is more a token of Yasuko’s status as “damaged goods” or of a common humanity, thrown into bold relief by harsh circumstances, that transcends class divisions.

The film’s classically restrained style intensifies the impact, the spare, eloquent interior shots reminding us that Imamura began his career as an assistant to the great Ozu. Imamura’s mastery is evident, for example, in the paired scenes of Yasuko bathing, the first emphasizing her lovely back and legs, the second how her hair is falling out. The shots stand almost as bookends to the narrative’s trajectory, distilling its tragic essence. The film’s documentary-style realism is violated for expressive purposes several times, perhaps most notably in a scene that lays bare the troubled interior life of a shell-shocked veteran. Both the score by the renowned avant-garde composer Toru Takemitsu and the stunning black and white photography contribute greatly to the film’s brooding atmosphere. When, in the final shot, Yasuko’s uncle (Kazuo Kitamura), the film’s laconic narrator, looks to the vacant sky for a rainbow as a sign of hope and regeneration, the black and white imagery suddenly becomes so poignant that it is almost unbearable. Few films from Japan (or anywhere else, for that matter) could be compared to the great, humanist Japanese masterpieces of the 1950s. This film is one of them. When I finished viewing it for the first time, I sat stunned, unable to move for at least five minutes, overwhelmed as I was by the emotions great tragedy should inspire: terror and pity.

McHale’s Navy Movie Reviews

I love this movie, having not watched the show in twenty years The Movie was DELIGHTFUL

Joe Flynn, gone too soon . . . the outtakes of the TV show prove he was funnier “off screen” than on. Ernest Borgnione, Tim Conway and the rest of the gang remind me of Peanuts at sea (Charlie Brown, Linus, Snoopy, etc. at sea). Just as Charlie Brown and Linus hang-out on the ledge of the stone wall in the comic strip–the crazy gang of Mchale’s Navy do the same. And the movie is in color! Its two hours (about) of comedy that is unmatched by this generation. Mchale’s navy now would be just a bunch of put-down humor and Adam sandler jokes. It was funny when Tim Conway ventures near the occupied hut and funnier when we see what runs out on a Japanese Island in the pacific. Boy oh Boy . . . .Mchale’s Navy . . . the show, the movie there’s not much difference except the color . . . thanks guys for a wonderful time. Mchale’s Navy forever!!! the movie and the show . . . Joe Flynn singing with the boys in the outtake is a must see!!!!! Thanks again: a real laugh riot -everytime

MINOR COMEDY CLASSIC

After recently trashing the hideous 1997 remake, I felt it appropriate to review the film that spawned perhaps the worst remake of any movie or series in the history of cinema. Actually, Mchale’s Navy (the original, mind you) is more like a ninety minute episode of the TV series. It doesn’t matter. If you’re a fan of the series, it’s well worth the time. Tim Conway as klutzy Ensign Parker and Joe Flynn as Captain “I could just scream” Binghampton are every bit as hilarious here as in the TV series.

All the more reason to avoid the 1997 dog turd starring Tom Arnold and Dean Stockwell.

Rating: ****1/2 out of *****

My WWII Navy veteran Dad’s favorite show in 1960’s

My father didn’t watch much TV in the 60’s. He didn’t even laugh much. Just his personality. When he watched this show, he used to laugh so hard, he’d nearly fall off his chair. Of course I laughed too, since I wasn’t used to seeing him laugh. My dad was a WWII US Navy Destroyer veteran stationed in the South Pacific, and his squadron earned 11 battle stars, so they weren’t on a luxury cruise. He laughed the hardest at Leadbottom – Binghamton, so I figure he had or knew a CO like Old Leadbottom. Come to think of it, my Dad acted a lot like Binghamton, so maybe he saw some of himself in old Leadbottom. Who knows, he’s gone now. I love to watch this show on tape, it gives me a brief connection back to those happy times with my father. I find myself laughing still.

For Ever Mozart Movie Reviews

another essay-style trip, with maybe a tinge of story, down the Godard-hole

Watching For Ever Mozart reminds me after taking a bit of a break from seeing Jean-Luc Godard’s films, in this case really more-so the later ones (eg 1980s till now) how sumptuous and thoughtful his films can be while he also becomes, perhaps, too impressed with his references, philosophical and political tangents, and with characters being more like models and mouth-pieces than anything extremely palatable. This time, unlike in a couple others by the director from this period, there is at least an attempt at setting up something for the characters to do, as opposed to being aimless amid Godard’s own ramblings. The younger characters in their 20s are planning to do some sort of play in Sarajevo, a place where war has turned the country into hell (Godard would later in Notre Musique explore Sarajevo). There’s also another story aligned with this where an old director, much as in other Godard works, is casting for a film, but is of course having trouble, not the least of which once he discovers one of his relatives (I think a relative, or a friend, I don’t know whom) might be in harm’s way or danger in Sarajevo.

For Ever Mozart isn’t the most pretentious arm-pit that one who plunges deep into the director’s cannon will eventually find all too well, and there were individual scenes that were striking, even funny. I thought it was fairly genius the scene where the director just keeps saying ‘no, next’ to the actors all just from saying two lines of dialog in an audition. Many of his outdoor compositions- sans the all-too-expected shots of the ocean which are as trademark for Godard as the demented profile close-up in a Kubrick film- are evidence of his gifts with the camera. Some of his compositions become even sort of awful, in a good way in its depiction I mean, of the material where the tanks and gun-shots and soldiers become more prominent in the 2nd half of the film. In a way it’s a return to the kind of un-hinged anti-war film that Godard made in his earlier days with the near-masterpiece Les Carabiniers. There’s even a considerable amount of on-screen violence, some of it punctuated with shots like a dead foot. There’s also one scene particular, with more than a few references to obscene sexual talk in a casino, that had me grinning even if it had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film.

But with For Ever Mozart, for all of the parts that do work or seem somehow accessible, there are at least a few more than necessary that don’t. It’s all subjective, of course, and I’m sure those who decide to seek it out of Godard’s oeuvre, which might not be many seeing the number of comments and votes on this site (and just critical response in general), may respond to it more than me. But the more interesting bits, those that may even not seem to be part of the usual mechanics of the unconventionality of his films, are sidelined by the self-consciousness, the references to everything from Camus to Rossellini. It’s like Godard isn’t content enough here to go completely with characters for us to really give a damn about or remember once the film ends (with the possible exception of the film director character) even if there is something of a story going on as one inter-cuts with another and another. There’s some good ideas, and some tasteful music, going all abound in For Ever Mozart, but the lack of cohesion becomes staggering.

great new film

I just saw this film last night at the UC theatre in Berkeley CA. It was great; I’m only 23 so I see Goddard’s classic movies in a different context than the generation that saw them released. For anyone who says “they” don’t make movies like this, hey, Jean=Luc does. NOt “Terminator 4” Not “The Fatal Bolero”. The movie will definitely displease anybody with hang-ups about continuity. But for those who appreciate aesthetics and politics, this will be a treat.

It is Necessary to Dream (with spoilers)

This seemed quite accessible to me, at least in the context of late Godard. The title is a pun on “Il Faut Rever”, setting the theme of art in troubled times. The story is about a group of young and somewhat naive actors setting off to perform the Musset play “On Ne Badine Pas Avec L’Amour” (One mustn’t trifle with love”) in Sarajevo and coming the inevitable cropper on the way. Meanwhile the lead actress’s grandfather plays the now standard “Godard” role of an old filmmaker battling with producers and technology to get his film made.

The photography and use of music is often heart-stoppingly beautiful, the response to the Balkan conflict seems to me as serious as it should be while contrary to other comments there is certainly humour here both bible-black (a woman spouts philosophy while digging her own grave, a guerrilla shows a comrade what we assume are holiday snaps but are revealed to be photos of the massacre of her family) and knockabout (a film producer complains Lake Geneva has “not enough water”, the audience for the old man’s “Fatal Bolero” comments on a film suspiciously similar to the one we have just watched).

As ever there are numerous references which those of us not steeped in French literature will miss, but overall this seems the most direct and outward-looking of Godard’s later films. I liked it very much.

Natural Light Movie Reviews

Avoid it.

A near two-hour long, historically inaccurate disappointment centered around some weird 40-something guy that does not really do much; Or talk much throughout the movie.

This movie lacks:

1.) A good degree of historical accuracy.

2.) An understandable depiction of what’s going on.

3.) Any fine characters and interesting performances.

4.) Any modicum of entertainment.

5.) Dialogs/Action/Characters/and ‘Light’ in general.

6.) WW2 Hungarian weaponry, accurate uniforms 7.) Young people of Military age; those who would have been enlisted during that time..

The uniforms used are weird and cheap looking. In my opinion, they might even be Chinese reproductions from the Internet.

The weapons you get to see in this movie are: German Kar 98 rifles, a West-German or Austrian MG3, and an MP-40.

Out of these 3 weapons only the MP-40’s saw limited use by Hungarian troops on the Eastern front in 1942-1943.

Personally, I think it fails badly even as entertainment.

Still, I suppose some people may enjoy tedious, melodramatic films populated with boring, unlikeable characters..

Cold, wet and depressing forests

A few days on the road with Sergeant István Semetka chasing the Partisans through the birch and pine forests in Russia, at the time of the 2nd World War.

I still remember those forests from over 40 years ago and to be honest, I’d rather cycle through the Dutch forests here than walk there in the Russian ones, but that aside.

The film comes across as cold, wet and depressing. You will not hear any laughter and István is not the happiest either. He continues to stoically look ahead and is not communicatively “the first rooster”.

Director Dénes Nagy is also very calm in his use of images, you often see scenes by István, staring into the distance or contemplating something and that takes more than 10 to 20 seconds before the next scene appears.

I like this myself, you see beautiful images, but there are probably also viewers who like action and going on, so I don’t recommend this film to them.

Also in terms of acts of war, little happens in the film, once you see a skirmish between the soldiers and the Partisans.

Despite that, my rating is more than sufficient because the film fascinated me, there is an atmosphere around it that appealed to me.

A nice 7+.

Slow and depressing war experience

The film presents the psychological aspects of war in a slow and intimate way. Dark, colourless, lethargic – just like these soldier’s life behind the front lines.

It pays a clear homage to Malick’s Thin Red Line and Klimov’s Come and See but manages to remain fresh and original.

Finally we have a great hungarian war movie which is brave enough to confront Hungary’s controversial participation in World War 2.

The One That Got Away Storyline

The exploits of Franz von Werra early during WWII are dramatized. A German Luftwaffe pilot, he, shot down, is forced to make an emergency landing in Kent, England on September 5th, 1940, he captured by the British authorities who are aware of his celebrated status at home for his military efforts. Partly a result of how he is interrogated and partly believing it his duty as a German officer, von Werra is determined not only to escape but to make it back to Germany so that he can report back what he’s learned to assist further in the German war effort. After the first such attempt, the British make it harder and harder for von Werra to escape, which only makes him more determined and more brazen in his actions to accomplish his goal.—Huggo

The One That Got Away Movie Reviews

Cult Movies 26

26. THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY (war, 1958) During air raids on Britain during WW2 German Lt. Von Warren’s (Hardy Kruger) plane is shot down. He’s captured and made a P.O.W. He repeatedly tries to escape but to no avail. Undaunted in his efforts he finally succeeds but has to survive the long and dangerous trek back to Germany.

Critique: Although the title is a bit of a giveaway, this is one of the most intriguing of war films, a substitute to the countless Americanized versions of P.O.Ws. The picture is perfectly paced adding to the excitement and suspense. Based on a true story of the only German to escape from an allied camp, it has beautiful crisp black and white photography. What makes it a standout in film history though is the fact that a German soldier is made the hero here.

Actor Hardy Krugers’ portrayal is an unusual mix of boyish charm, and cockiness. The film is virtually flawless except for the screenwriter’s depiction of Von Warren. They make him so much likable and appealing (funnier) than the Brits that one walks out rooting for him. I mean isn’t he the enemy? One of Hitler’s tools of war?

Furthermore, it’s disturbing to learn that Von Warren returns home but goes back to the front and dies fighting the Allies. This little known film is hard to get on video (though I’ve seen a re-released copy), so your best shot is to catch it on TV.

QUOTE: Von Warren: “It’s the duty of an officer to try and escape.”

Grit And Determination

About forty years after The One That Got Away came out, another film involving the escape of a German national from Allied hands with another fair haired lead became my favorite film with Brad Pitt. Seven Years in Tibet was done with a much larger budget, but involves the same test of human endurance and escape that Hardy Kruger goes through here.

Probably for the first time in British cinema a German during World War II was made a three dimensional human being. We don’t get any hint of Kruger’s politics, even so I think it would have been irrelevant to the story.

This incident in fact is a true one, taking place in 1940 during the first days of the Luftwaffe attacks on the United Kingdom. Kruger is determined to get back to the fight at all costs. He proves a charismatic and inspirational leader to his comrades.

Kruger makes two attempts to escape while in British custody, but it’s only over in Canada where he’s being sent to a prison near Lake Superior that he makes his most daring try. Jumping from a train taking him to internment, he walks across to America.

This is where I can appreciate the film the most. The last twenty minutes of the film are almost without dialog as Kruger is alone. What he does is reach the St. Lawrence River and it being in the middle of winter finds it frozen over. Seeing that he walks over and makes it to upstate New York.

Living as I do on one of the Great Lakes I can appreciate what that entails more than others. I’ve lived through eleven winters in Buffalo by now and some of them have been pretty bad. Lake Erie does in fact freeze over as does the St. Lawrence. I certainly wouldn’t want to try to walk across Lake Erie even if I was a 20 something as Kruger is in The One That Got Away.

No matter what you feel about the politics of World War II, you’ve got to admire this man’s grit and determination. Hardy Kruger’s impressive performance puts that over for you.

By all means see this film when TCM has it on again.

They don’t make ’em like this anymore

“The One that got away” is an outstanding World War Two adventure, based on the legendary exploits of Franz Von Werra – the only Luftwaffe Officer to escape from Allied captivity.

The film is now considered by many to be something of a minor classic, and it really isn’t difficult to see why.

What particularly impressed me, was how Roy Ward Baker managed to create a genuine empathy between Von Werra (brilliantly portrayed here by Hardy Kruger) and the audience without resorting to cliché or racial stereotyping. Accepted, Von Werra may be representing one of the most vile regimes in history but you desperately want him to succeed, and it’s real edge of the seat stuff to see if he can pull it off.

Head and shoulders above most other British war movies produced during this era, it just gets better and better every time I see it.

Scream for Me Sarajevo Movie Reviews

Defiant madness

In 1994, at the height of the siege of Sarejevo, a British Army officier conceived and executed a plan to have Bruce Dickinson, the lead singer of Iron Maiden, come and play a concert. What followed was a harrowing but rewarding experience for the band, and a rare outburst of joy for those who attended. I enjoyed this documentary, primarily because it doesn’t overly focus on the supposed heroism of the band. Rather it conveys quite why their presence meant so much to their audience, and the real story told is the underlying tale of how a civilised European country was torn apart long after many of us had assumed that kind of thing just didn’t happen here. There’s something engagingly, defiantly daft about putting on a heavy metal show amid such tragedy; and this film nicely balances these two sides as it reconstructs the tale.

Fingers crawl through pages, nothing changes living here…

Randomly screened on the BBC over Christmas 2020 – what I’d taken to simply be a concert film with some historical framing turns out to be quite a touching and harrowing documentary about the Bruce Dickinson solo band being essentially smuggled into the besieged Sarajevo to play a concert for the people there. It’s got a commendably sharp focus and only really speaks to those directly involved – it’s an endearingly frank portrait of a painful period of history, but also the spirit of music, the optimism of youth and the wild escapism that can flood into you during a really unforgettable gig.

Rock ‘n’ Roll defends Sarajevo, Review by Zlatko Gall

Until I saw “Scream for Me Sarajevo”, I did not understand the emotions nor the incredible amount of pride with which in January 1996 in Cannes, while promoting his new solo album “Skunkworks”, Bruce Dickinson spoke to me about his Sarajevo wartime gig. I thought that his stories about driving in a wrecked military truck along the icy roads of Mount Igman and about the magnificent Sarajevo concert that took place that wicked, tragic winter of 1994, were just his own elegant way of trying to get rid of me.

It was as if he was telling me, knowing that I am from Split, the Sarajevo story that begins and ends on the runways around Split, just so he could dodge the “all-time question” about whether he intends to go back to his original flock of Iron Maiden any time soon. Today I understand why I was wrong. I also understand why, even after twenty years that have passed since that gig, Bruce and the boys from his band still clearly remember Sarajevo, “Sarajevans” and all that has happened to that city, its interior and its surroundings.

“Scream for Me Sarajevo” – a remarkable documentary which functions evenly well on at least three different fronts. As a suggestive and convincing documentary with a flawlessly realized story about a unique event – Bruce Dickinson’s concert in besieged Sarajevo in 1994; as a documentary reconstruction of a segment of a life lead in a beleaguered and systematically devastated city – a reconstruction entirely deprived of the already well-known and exploited general information regarding locations, politicians, heroes and criminals; and, last but not least, as a fascinating testimony about a peculiar “resistance movement” against death and nothingness.

The resistance movement’s main protagonists – unlike the defenders on the battlefield with Kalashnikovs and Zoljas – were all kinds of artists, hardcore professionals and absolute beginners, well-known and unknown creative souls and also teenagers. The kids who, because of their raging hormones or out of spite, in their stubborn attempt to live insanely “normal” lives in a city under siege in which one lives now and is gone the next minute, were seen as a weird and never before seen sort of an urban (we could also say rock and roll) guerilla. Bruce Dickinson’s concert, together with the well-known Sarajevo beauty pageant, represents one of “THE” individual moments belonging to that naively utopian, escapist but also heroically rebellious “normality”.

For the teenagers of “thenadays”, as well as all the “rockers” – whether they were fans of Iron Maiden or not – the performance of Bruce Dickinson was as close to a miracle as it gets. It was a paranormal wraith, a miracle hard to understand. Just as their lives, or better yet their craving for a “normal” life acting as a shield that protected them from the madness of war, humiliation, hunger and even death, seemed unreal and wondrous to their rock-and-roll guests.

Apart from the swift matrix of the main plot, “Scream for Me Sarajevo” offers numerous meandering confluents through which people who have never even heard of Sarajevo or Dickinson can make sense out of the story. Some such elements are the unbreakable Sarajevo spirit and the (black) humor, which were obviously reflected in the selection of favorite songs or bands played on a small but resilient local radio station “Radio Zid” (“Radio Wall”). This wonder radio was playing music as if it wasn’t in the middle of a war zone, surrounded by exploding bombs and grenades, but in the middle of Manhattan, Berlin, London… Because, for heaven’s sake, it seems that it is only the people of Sarajevo that are able to – amidst constant shelling and sniper fire – embrace the music featuring guitars in burst fire mode, militaristic beats of the rhythm machine and lyrics speaking about fear and death, or, for that matter, cling onto the Bristol’s trip-hoppers, not only for the music, but the band’s symbolic name: “Massive Attack”.

I might be overreacting, but to hell with it because “Scream for Me Sarajevo” represents an emotional niche with a sign above its entrance reading “Walter Defends Sarajevo”. Except this time Walter is replaced by Sarajevo’s teenagers and some fierce rock ‘n’ roll.
