The Homesman Movie Reviews

Harrowing exploration of mental illness in less enlightened times

THE HOMESMAN is a dark and gritty western exploring the topic of mental illness in less enlightened times. The story was adapted by Tommy Lee Jones from a 1980s novel, and Jones also directed and stars in the picture as the titular character. He plays an old-timer who agrees to help Hilary Swank transport three mentally ill women some 500 miles to a place of sanctuary where they can be cared for.

First off, this is very well shot movie with strong direction from Jones, whose performance is also a quality one. The colours are bright and the landscapes are beauty, which contrasts with the ugly scenes involving the main characters. Mental illness has always been a difficult subject matter for cinema – ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST is one of the few successful explorations of the topic – and it translates into a depressing and yes, upsetting story here.

There are some dark twists and turns along the way, but the characters and acting keep you watching, and at least one crowd-pleasing moment designed to lift the spirits a little. THE HOMESMAN isn’t really a film you can say you enjoy watching, but kudos to Jones for making something a bit different from the norm.

slow and ending needs shortening

Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) is a spinster with good financial holdings. The plain pious woman is too “bossy” to get a husband. Arabella Sours (Grace Gummer), Theoline Belknapp (Miranda Otto) and Gro Svendsen (Sonja Richter) are wives struggling under the hardships. All have mental breakdowns. Reverend Dowd (John Lithgow) reluctantly accepts her offer to take the three women to a church in Hebron, Iowa which treats the mentally ill. George Briggs (Tommy Lee Jones) is a claim jumper. Cuddy saves him from a hanging as he promises to do anything for her. She takes him along on the trip.

It’s a bit slow and I don’t really feel for the characters. Swank’s character is too inexpressive and I can’t root for Briggs. The movie could have the three women interact more. Theoline burying Arabella’s doll is the only memorable moment for the women. I just want more to be done with all five characters interacting. After the turn/twist, the movie does get to a big climax but the movie keeps going and going. It really needs to end after the delivery. It’s too long by 10 minutes.

Startlingly Original Movie

Actors with chops and a thoroughly engaging situation. Hillary Swank is without peer in today’s cinematic world. She is worth the price of admission every time. Here she plays a tough young pioneer woman who has carved out her place in a desolate part of Nebraska. She is extremely forward when it comes to men and she suffers for it. The pickings are pretty bad. Because she likes to test herself, she agrees to transport three mentally ill women to a place in Iowa. Along the way, she save a guy named Briggs, played by Tommy Lee Jones, from hanging. He is a claim jumper and has overstepped his bounds. Her pound of flesh is for him to assist her in her venture. She agrees to pay him upon reaching their destination. Of course, there are incredible pitfalls when dealing with their unhappy cargo. None of them speak. We have no idea about how much thought is going on in those vacuous visages. All three have faced some kind of abuse or heartache and have lost their beings. A bond develops between Swank’s Cully and Jones’s Briggs as he does his best to face the realities of the venture. The one scene that bothered me is not the death of Cully, but rather the burning of the hotel after Briggs and the women are refused service, even though they can pay. They pay a horrible price for their actions, but one can only imagine that innocent people were killed. This is an allegory, and the conclusion is realistic. One could make a case for people being awfully insensitive. I have not problem with that these days. A good many of us have regressed to that level. I just have to say that this movie really spoke to me. It was a wonderful surprise.
