These Final Hours Movie Reviews

Aussie end-of-the-world indie

Ten minutes ago, some cosmic collision occurred in the north Atlantic. It is spreading destruction across the globe and will reach Perth, Australia in 12 hours. James has end-of-the-world sex with Zoe. He decides to reconnect with his girlfriend Vicky. On the way, he is carjacked by a crazed man. He tries to steal a van and reluctantly rescues little girl Rose from two rapist. She is separated from her father and has no choice but to follow James around. They eventually get to Freddy’s wild party. Both Vicky and her brother Freddy are drugged out crazy. James come to realize what is truly important in the last moments of the world. This is undoubtedly an Aussie end-of-the-world indie. Everybody is crazy, criminal, suicidal, or all three partying their brains out. I would have wanted a whimsical section. Instead of another murder-suicide, I prefer to have a happy BBQ in a comical picnic scene. I also don’t see why nobody is out on the street unless the movie is hinting that everybody is killing themselves. A nice happy party would also be a great opposite of the wild crazy party. The big thing that I love about this movie is the journey that James goes through. It’s really about James growing up. I was a little bit concerned about how this would end but the movie closes with a nice poetic touch. The problems are minor in this compelling indie.

Not Impressed

A self-obsessed young man makes his way to the party-to-end-all-parties on the last day on Earth, but ends up saving the life of a little girl searching for her father. Their relationship ultimately leads him on the path to redemption.

This film really wanted to grab you from the opening shot, with a couple making love somewhat furiously. The full bodies, uncovered… this is as close to realistic sex on screen as you can get without going to full porn. (So, by the way, credit should be given to these actors who now have this preserved for eternity.) But overall the film just never hooked me. Not that it was bad, but it never really seemed good, either. Sarah Snook is in it, which I like (she was great in “Jessabelle”). But beyond that? I would much rather watch “The End is Here” or some other movie.

Not your run-of-the-mill apocalypse movie

I was a little skeptical about this movie going in, but since I am becoming a growing fan of Australian films these days, and because I just can’t ever resist Jessica De Gouw, I thought I’d give it a shot. And I was handsomely rewarded!

The story starts with an oncoming asteroid/comet/fireball that is due to hit and obliterate Earth, and the accompanying countdown to the end of life as we know it. All of humanity is aware it is coming, and there is nothing that can be done about it. James (Nathan Phillips) is leaving Zoe (Jessica De Gouw) in bed (idiot!) to travel accross town to attend the party to end all parties. This begins a tale which is sometimes touching, sometimes crazy, and sometimes terrifying.

The imagery is beautiful throughout, and the film offers a unique vision of how humanity would spend it’s last 12 hours on Earth, culminating nicely with a very tender and loving moment between Phillips and DeGouw.

This is a good film…it keeps you focused the entire time, and sews itself up nicely in the end, which to me, is the sign of good storytelling.

Special shoutout to Angourie Rice, who does a great job of playing a little girl who is simply trying to find her father, and in the end helps James come to his senses and return to Zoe.

Another great job by the Australian film industry!
