Pitch Perfect Storyline

Barden College sports four different a cappella singing groups, the all-male Treblemakers and the all-female Bellas, who are the most antagonistic toward each other of the four, making it into the national finals of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCAC), held annually at Lincoln Center in New York City. The Bellas are the first all-female group to make the finals, but what strides they make forward for all women singing take two major steps backward at the finals with tired, uninspired arrangements solely of twentieth century girl songs, and an unfortunate incident by their controlling lead, Aubrey Posen, whose choice of singers has to be clones of her pretty self. As such, Aubrey and co-lead Chloe Beale have to rebuild the group from scratch for the upcoming season, which will be difficult due to the notoriety from the incident at the finals. Meanwhile, Beca Mitchell is a reluctant freshman at Barden, her Barden professor father paying for her tuition for one year just so that she can be exposed to college life. Her reluctance is that she is a loner, she preferring to work on her music mixes in solitude in her want to be a Los Angeles DJ or music producer. Although she is made aware of the Bellas in her wanderings around campus, Beca has no intention of auditioning, until she meets Chloe, who encourages her to do so. Beca is accepted with a more diverse group than has ever been the Bellas, but Beca and Aubrey end up clashing over Aubrey’s direction for the group, which she mistakenly believes is the winning direction. One of Aubrey’s other zero tolerance policies is no sex with any Treblemaker. Although Beca has no intention of breaking that policy, she does admit that one of the few people on campus she has befriended beyond the other women in the Bellas is fellow music lover and singer Jesse Swanson, an aspiring film score composer and a freshman Treblemaker. Beca will have to decide how far to break out of her shell and stay true to her own musical leanings, which if she does so means taking on Aubrey for some control of the group. What Beca decides may also affect what happens in her friendship with Jesse.

Pitch Perfect Movie Reviews

Good actresses, Great group chemistry

The Barden Bellas are a collegiate, all-girls acappella singing group stuck on girlie pop songs and their Stepford Wives looks. After a hilarious catastrophic loss at the previous year’s finals, they are forced to fish for members from the bottom of the barrel. Chloe (Brittany Snow) and Aubrey (Anna Camp), the returning members start picking up new recruits including freshman Beca (Anna Kendrick) who is an independent aspiring DJ unsure of college life.

Other new members include the Rebel Wilson who is a true revelation. Anna Kendrick is solid in controlling the screen. Anna Camp had an awesome gut busting moment. The singing is fun. What works best is the chemistry between everybody. These are great female friendships. They make this movie fun to watch.

Just Not Very Good!

I’m not here to rain on someone’s parade. If you enjoy this kind of stuff, it’s OK with me. But I don’t understand how something so inane could be so popular. It fails on so many levels. First of all, there is absolutely no realistic character development. These kids are just boring. They are types, thrown together because of their quirkiness, their ethnicity, their race, or even their sexual preference. The sad thing is that doing this doesn’t lead to anything interesting. Ooh! You mean a fat girl could actually be talented!! I’ll admit they have good voices, but so does everyone else in this film. So, where’s the conflict? The leader threw up as they were performing for a national championship and is trying to get a second chance? Then there’s the sullen main character. I got tired of her and her whiny portrayal in about five minutes. I couldn’t care less if they won because I didn’t like any of them. Throw in those boorish idiot commentators who never say one funny thing the whole show, and it becomes a snoozefest. A couple numbers are OK but there is no suspense or interest built up. When the big face off comes, we don’t wonder for a second what is going to happen.

Geared up to hate this, but ended up loving it.

When my girlfriend suggested put this on I mimed blowing my brains out with an imaginary revolver.

That was a mistake. This is a great, fun film!

An all girl acapella group have to regain their crown by winning a competition. So a motley crew of underdogs is assembled, including our main character, to challenge the superior competition.

The characters are heavily stereotyped, and this is the source of a lot of the comedy. I found the characters engaging and lovable, and laughed along with most of the gags. The cynical, misogynistic, judgemental, biased commentators were especially funny.

The singing segments are short and sharp and just enough to get your foot tapping without going full blown Mary Poppins.

I didn’t expect (or particularly want) to enjoy this but I did a lot.

My recommendation is that even if this is not your kind of movie force yourself to watch the first fifteen minutes, their is a good chance you will make it to the end with a smile on your face.
