Catch .44 Storyline

For Tes (Akerman) and her two cohorts Kara (Nikki Reed) and Dawn (Deborah Ann Woll), the job sounded simple enough: intercept a double-cross drug shipment for their crime boss Mel (Willis) at an isolated diner. But when an unstoppable chain of events unfolds, everyone soon realizes no one is who they seem and the job may be something other than eliminating the competition. What started as simple instructions has now turned into a deadly cat-and-mouse game – with large guns pointed at everyone.

Poorly scripted

CATCH .44 is a poorly-scripted low budget thriller set in a diner in the middle of the night. Various characters turn up with nefarious purposes in mind but things go horribly wrong with murder and shoot-outs coming to the fore. This is an obvious attempt to make a Tarantino-style thriller full of edginess and grit, but the below par script means that things quickly get routine and rather dull. What’s a real pity is that many familiar faces are wasted in nothing parts, from Forest Whitaker stuck with a bad accent to a barely-glimpsed Bruce Willis, Shea Whigham and Brad Dourif.

Tes (Malin Akerman) and her girls Kara (Nikki Reed) and Dawn (Deborah Ann Woll) are waiting at a roadside diner for a particular trucker who has been transporting drugs and stealing business from their boss Mel (Bruce Willis). The situation goes badly. In flashbacks, Ronny (Forest Whitaker) kills and impersonates a cop. He makes a traffic stop on the girls and then shows up at the diner.

There are definite parallels between this and Pulp Fiction. There are the flashback time loops and catchy cool tunes. The problem is that this is much inferior. It’s a mistake to kill a leading character right off the bat. One is much less invested in her during the flashbacks and there is not enough mystery to hold the interest otherwise. The dialogue is inferior although Willis tries awkwardly to inject some edginess. The one scene that pushed it over for me is the tracking shot of a no-name bimbo’s butt. It’s trying too hard that it actually pains me at times. There is appreciation for the attempt but it can only goes so far.

Crap 44

Released in 2011 but seemingly shot in 2005. There is even a Brokeback Mountain gag. If Bruce Willis and Forest Whitaker thought they buried this film then they did a rotten job just like the writer/director of this film.

Right from the opening titles you feel a Tarantino vibe, you see people having useless conversations in a diner/bar resulting in a hold up. A shootout ensues before we end up with flashbacks as to how they got there.

The film has ten minutes of plot stretched out with scenes repeating themselves and pointless jabbering. Bruce Willis appears for a few scenes as a gangland boss who sends three women who have messed up on a previous job on a fools errand. Forest Whitaker is Willis’s henchman who is to rendezvous with the women.

The film is excrement. There is just a lot of talk, some mindless violence and characters that are not interesting so you do not care if they die. Compare this with Pulp Fiction where you get upset that Travolta’s character dies midway through the film.

The film just shows that many people think that its easy to do a Tarantino type film when it certainly is not.
