Mirror Mirror Movie Reviews

An absolute delight

In this variation on the Snow White story, most of the familiar elements are in place, augmented by the dwarfs being robbers, and the Wicked Queen having designs on the Prince (with a view to topping up the old Exchequer).

Julia Roberts, for whom I do not care, plays the Wicked Queen and plays her very well. Lily Collins (daughter of Phil) plays Snow White, and Armie Hammer plays the Prince.

This film cleverly balances a fairly faithful retelling of the story with a simultaneous gently subversive deconstruction, and I must praise the script right from the start: it is both clever and funny. The film looks terrific. Roberts is, as already mentioned, very good, and Lily Collins is an absolute delight, sweet and vulnerable, yet also with a degree of feistiness. She is also one of those rare young women whose face is lit up when she smiles. The dwarfs and the Prince are all very funny.

This film is charming and delightful, and has a number of surprises, some of which are a treat (the poisoned apple, and the musical ending, to name but two). I loved it.

Julia Roberts, Nathan Lane, and Lilly Collins are pretty good in the fairy tale spoof Mirror Mirror

Just watched this fairy tale spoof of a movie with my movie theatre-working friend. Julia Roberts plays the Evil Queen who wants Snow White (Lilly Collins) killed but her henchman (Nathan Lane) is very reluctant to do so. Ms. White eventually falls in with some…well, let’s just say diminutive warriors and a prince (Armie Hammer) who’s being tricked into marrying the queen. What the queen does to make him fall for her is the most hilarious thing in the movie. Nothing is as funny as what I just mentioned but there’s a fun atmosphere throughout even during the more intense dramatic parts. And check out the Bollywood number that ends the whole thing! Really, I’ll just say that Mirror Mirror is very much worth a look.

Over-embellished and under-cooked, but not as awful as expected

‘Mirror Mirror’ was met with indifference, and a lot of other cases, utmost dislike by the critics on release. Seeing it for myself, while far from a great, or even good, film this reviewer was honestly expecting it to be much worse.

It has drawn inevitable comparisons with the other Snow White film released around a similar period ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’. Keeping comparisons brief, I didn’t find either film great and found both heavily flawed, but neither were awful. For me, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ is marginally better, ‘Mirror Mirror’ does have the far superior Snow White but ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ while wildly uneven doesn’t try to do too much, is more focused in tone and actually attempts to give the evil queen character a backstory.

Starting with the good points with ‘Mirror Mirror’ it looks wonderful. It’s beautifully shot, with ravishing set design, eye-popping colour, wonderfully elaborate costumes especially for the Queen and quite good effects. Alan Menken’s score is whimsical, fun, rousing, haunting and lushly orchestrated. There are a few amusing lines, and there are some good performances. Julia Roberts does steal scenes as the chillingly icy and deliciously sarcastic queen, while Lily Collins is much improved over Kristen Stewart, more restrained yet much more expressive and easier to relate to. The dwarfs have enjoyable personalities and are fun to watch, especially Chuckles. And Nathan Lane does his best to elevate his material, it’s beneath him but he does deliver some fun line delivery.

However ‘Mirror Mirror’s’ main problem is that it is very over-embellished but also very under-cooked. Both the script and story are messy. The script has some amusing moments, mostly from the dwarfs, but too many of the jokes are embarrassingly contrived and forced, not helped by some of the comic timing being limp in places, and there is a lot of tonal imbalance with the humour taking over too much. The story begins well with a visually spellbinding and entertaining beginning, but is both rushed and meandering, and underneath all that glamour and style the heart and soul is missing. It suffers from trying to do far too much and not doing anywhere near enough with the plot strands, giving the storytelling a chaotic, muddled and incomplete feel.

Editing is also very jumpy and chaotic, narratively and visually (but especially the former), and character writing is dull as dishwater. Arnie Hammer’s handsomeness is not enough to make up for a performance by Hammer that’s over-compensated and bland and very indecisive character writing. Like ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’ there is a distinct lack of chemistry between the leads. The action is pretty amateurish, and lastly that song and dance Bollywood number that ends the film was completely out of place and couldn’t have been a more random and cheesy way to end. Tarsem Singh does very well with the style but seemed to have completely forgotten about the substance.

Overall, not as awful as expected but over-embellished and under-cooked. 4/10 Bethany Cox
