Stolen Storyline

In New Orleans, the notorious bank thief and family man Will Montgomery steals $10m with his partners Vincent, Riley Jeffers and Hoyt. However, he has an argument with Vincent in the runaway and Hoyt leaves Will behind. He tries to flee but the FBI agent Tim Harlend organizes a manhunt and Will is captured, but he burns the stolen money to get rid of the evidence against him. Eight years later, Will leaves the prison and he goes to the house of his teenage daughter Alison Loeb, who has issues against him. Alison leaves Will alone in a coffee shop and takes a cab to go to a session with her shrink. However, a couple of minutes later, Will receives a phone call from Vincent, who is presumed dead, telling that he has abducted Alison and will kill her unless he receives the $10m of the last robbery. Now Will has twelve hours to find a way to rescue his daughter from the hands of the psychopath Vincent.

Generic and unappealing

STOLEN is a very lame Nicolas Cage thriller, one that takes place outside the boundaries of reality and feels very silly as a result. The film is a major disappointment considering the talents of director Simon West, who has made decent films before (CON AIR) and since (THE EXPENDABLES 2). The family friendly attitude to the production is another problem, nothing feels dangerous or remotely threatening here.

The plot is predictable to say the least. Cage and his associates carry out the ultimate bank robbery, only to have the police show up. The others escape but Cage gets eight years in the slammer after burning the money. After he’s let out, he discovers his former partner’s gone rogue, still demanding his share of the loot, to which end he kidnaps Cage’s daughter.

And there you have it. Cage gives a dull, subdued performance but he can’t do much with this boring character. Danny Huston, playing his nemesis, a dogged cop on his tail, is equally routine, and as for Josh Lucas’s crazed villain, the less said about his Z-grade acting the better. STOLEN contains poor, predictable action scenes and too many unbelievable moments to be an effective thriller; check out some Mark Wahlberg movies like CONTRABAND and BROKEN CITY for better attempts at the genre.

SOMETIMES DADDY’S DO BAD THINGS

I was just thinking the other day, “It’s been weeks since Hollywood has put out a kidnapped daughter, daddy rescue film. I wonder when the next one is coming out?” Nicolas Cage returns to New Orleans to play super thief Will Montgomery, who unfortunately gets nabbed on his first movie heist. After eight years in prison he comes out to an estranged daughter with abandonment issues, who he loves dearly (Sami Gayle), and a bunch of people who want to know where he stashed the money.

Will claims he burned the money in a nearby fire, something I imagine that the FBI never bothered to check for ashes as it was a good three feet away from the car which they seen Will emerge. The film description tells us his daughter is kidnapped, to no surprise as the title is “Stolen” because Liam Neeson has corned the market on “Taken.” His former partner Vincent (Josh Lucas) wants his share.

Outside of the great soundtrack, the first thing I noticed was the name “Vincent.” It is the same name used for a vampire in FF VII. Nicolas Cage has recently been outed as a real life vampire (check Google), which he denies. Is a movie industry ploy, dropping clues, i.e. “Paul is dead” in order for us see Cage’s films?

If you have never seen an action film before or a kidnapped daughter film, this is a decent flick. The problem is that I have become burnt out on the same formula.

As far as kidnapped daughter films, Nicolas Cage isn’t as good as Liam, but is better than John Cusack.

I give it a 7 because Its all so predictable and these plots have been made earlier. Cage keeps us on the edge and carries every scene on his shoulders.

Malin Akerman is almost non-existent There is no Love angle only a father going about to rescue his daughter Like watching Kurt Russel in Breakdown searching for his wife.

The FBI team is good have made their presence worth it

Other characters of the movie might well be out of any B movie

A nice thrill ride if you ignore the predictable turn of events ..

I give it a seven only because Cage make this ordinary bag of movie watchable
