Blackthorn Storyline

In Bolivia, two decades after his mysterious disappearance in San Vicente in 1908, life has found Butch Cassidy exiled to a small Bolivian town. Only now the aged outlaw goes under the name James Blackthorn. Cassidy has been keeping to himself; breeding and selling horses in order save money to return to the states. But an attempted ambush by a young Spaniard leaves him with no money as he watches his horse run off with his saddle bags full of cash. With the Spaniard held at gunpoint, Cassidy is told there is a hidden stash of money he will receive for helping the young man flee the mining families from which he stole the stash. Now it’s up to Cassidy to revive his former self and save the two from meeting their death in the desert sands of Bolivia.

A Rhythmic Ride

Great outdoor cinematography highlight this darn good Western. The story of an aging outlaw returning home is engaging and the morality tale is delivered decisively. It has a number of dramatic details that make it believable (taking a slice of meat off the dead horse and roasting it on the campfire).

In all the expanse of the Bolivian landscape the humanity and characterizations are not lost and we care about Butch Cassidy, his lady love, and even the ex-Pinkerton who discovers, then assists our anti-hero on his way to settle the score.

All the elements of classic Westerns are at work here and the pace is methodical and maintained for a rhythmic ride. The gun-play is realistic and never stylized and the result is a new Western with an old West feel.

More an atmospheric mood piece than a western

BLACKTHORN is a low key little western story with the added attraction of having been filmed in Bolivia. It’s a semi-sequel of sorts to BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID, supposedly based on a real-life bit of historical research that revealed the pair weren’t killed by Bolivian soldiers in a shoot out after all. What really happened is shown in brief flashbacks in which Butch is played by GAME OF THRONES star Nikolaj Coaster-Waldau , and it’s more downbeat and realistic than in the Hollywood production.

Otherwise, this film is very much unlike the glossy Paul Newman-starrer. There’s no humour for a start, just an understated approach that makes this an art-house film. It’s a lyrical mood piece in which glorious rolling landscapes and deserts are the backdrop to character-based plot twists. Sam Shepard plays an aged Cassidy in an understated way, leaving the brunt of the acting to Eduardo Noriega who plays his newfound associate. There’s no action here to speak of aside from a couple of brief shoot-outs, just plot-building and pretty visuals.

In 1908 Bolivia, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were supposedly killed in a final gunfight. In 1927 Bolivia, Butch is living under the assumed name James Blackthorn (Sam Shepard). He decides to return to America after the death of old mate Etta Place. He withdraws all of his money. He gets into a gunfight with Eduardo Apodaca (Eduardo Noriega) who claims to be escaping from a powerful mine owner after stealing his money. Their horses run off. Eduardo had mistaken Blackthorn for one of his pursuer and offers a share of the loot for his help. There are flashbacks of Butch and Sundance with Etta as they are pursued by Pinkerton Detective Mackinley and the Bolivian Army.

Spanish director Mateo Gil takes on the modern western. It is beautifully shot and it’s got Sam Shepard. He’s got the charisma and big screen presence for such an iconic character. The story does meander around and it’s the most thrilling plot. The flashbacks disrupt the flow and could be left out. This is more compelling as a movie spotlighting Sam Shepard and make him the man with a fake name.
