Ip Man 2 Storyline

In 1950, Yip Man (1893-1972) has left Foshun for Hong Kong. With his wife expecting their second child, Yip opens a martial arts school to teach Wing Chun. Things start slowly and even when he has students, Yip doesn’t always collect tuition. Yip also runs afoul of the local guild of martial arts masters: they demand that he defeat each of them before they will let his school continue; the elder of the group, Master Hong Zhen Nan, also demands a sizable payment. Yip is defiant. Then, things go terribly wrong with the British when their boxing champion insults Chinese martial arts at a public demonstration. Master Hong steps up to defend Chinese honor, but will that be enough?

Xiaolongbao! Epic film!

Great story with an excellent screenplay, perfect choreography, with directing on point! This is the only film of the three I’ve seen so far that was dubbed in English, so today I learned it’s pronounced Ip, not I.P. as in Internet Protocol of which I’ve been calling the Master lol.

Superior martial arts film in every respect

I somehow doubted that IP MAN 2 would compare to the general excellence of the first film, but to my surprise and delight it does! It’s a cracking little action movie that tells an involving, true-life story that doesn’t just repeat the same kind of stuff we saw in the first film. This time around, Ip Man must test his mettle against a series of Hong Kong martial arts masters before taking his talent to the world stage.

The film displays exactly the same kind of sumptuous production values as the original, with Wilson Yip’s expert direction combining with Sammo Hung’s beautiful fight choreography to startling effect. Hung himself appears as a rival master and his various bouts with Yen are awe-inspiring, and there’s a mid-way set-piece in a fish market that has to be seen to be believed – one of the greatest large-scale fight scenes ever put on film. By the time we reach the events of the last reel, involving a nasty British boxer, I was fully behind the film and loving every action-packed minute. It goes without saying that Yen gives a seemingly effortless performance and that the film provides real heart as well as top-notch action. Outstanding!

Yen and Hung

It’s 1950 Hong Kong. Ip Man (Donnie Yen) is restarting his school and trying to establish his Wing Chun style. It’s a slow start. Wong Leung becomes his first student. Life is tough and money is tight. Ip Man finds himself in conflict with rival Master Hung (Sammo Hung) who is connected to corrupt local Fatso and his British masters.

There is a great Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa relationship in this movie. There are some overly dramatic villains in this movie but some of it can be excused. Anybody familiar with the fight game have seen overly dramatic testosterone-fueled drama. Even though he screams too much, I’m fine with Twister’s craziness. Quite frankly, I would cut out Ip Man’s final speech and have him walk away with dignity. There is some over-the-top unnecessary melodrama.. The best is the rivalry between Ip Man and Master Hung. Sammo Hung is simply great. The two veterans are the beating heart of this movie. As for the action, there is some good stuff but interestingly, the fights against Twister show that the Chinese fighters being weaker than him. They’re put in a standard underdog sports movie.
