The Hangover Storyline

Angelenos Doug Billings and Tracy Garner are about to get married. Two days before the wedding, the four men in the wedding party – Doug, Doug’s two best buddies Phil Wenneck and Stu Price, and Tracy’s brother Alan Garner – hop into Tracy’s father’s beloved Mercedes convertible for a 24-hour stag party to Las Vegas. Phil, a married high school teacher, has the same maturity level as his students when he’s with his pals. Stu, a dentist, is worried about everything, especially what his controlling girlfriend Melissa thinks. Because she disapproves of traditional male bonding rituals, Stu has to lie to her about the stag, he telling her that they are going on a wine tasting tour in the Napa Valley. Regardless, he intends on eventually marrying her, against the advice and wishes of his friends. And Alan seems to be unaware of what are considered the social graces of the western world. The morning after their arrival in Las Vegas, they awaken in their hotel suite each with the worst hangover. None remembers what happened in the past twelve or so hours. The suite is in shambles. And certain things are in the suite that shouldn’t be, and certain things that should be in the suite are missing. Probably the most important in the latter category is Doug. As Phil, Stu and Alan try to find Doug using only what little pieces of information they have at hand, they go on a journey of discovery of how certain things got into the suite and what happened to the missing items. However they are on a race for time as if they can’t find Doug in the next few hours, they are going to have to explain to Tracy why they are not yet back in Los Angeles. And even worse, they may not find Doug at all before the wedding.

A fairly funny film

When I sat down to watch this I wasn’t sure what to expect; of the main cast the only actor whose name I recognised was Bradley Cooper and that was because I’d seen him in the TV show ‘Alias’ which is hardly a comedy. The idea of a group of men going out for a stag night in Las Vegas led me to expect a fairly puerile story about what they got up to there; and while the actual film was fairly silly it was also pretty funny and I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected.

Most of the story is told in flashback after one of the group telephones the bride to be to let her know that they have lost the groom; the rest of the film follows their adventures as they look for clues as to what happened on that fateful night. This adventure will include a tiger in their bathroom, a missing tooth, one of them marrying a stripper, stealing police car, finding a naked Chinese man in their car’s boot and a meeting with Mike Tyson. If that sounds fairly madcap it is because it is rather! Several scenes caused me to chuckle and some were laugh out loud funny; the scene where they were children got to shoot the group with stun guns was hysterically funny!

The acting was decent, Bradley Cooper shows that he can do comedy as well as drama, Zach Galifianakis was funny as the less than intelligent Alan and Ed Helms was good as the hen-pecked dentist Stu. While some of the jokes missed the mark it was funny enough to be worth watching so long as you don’t mind the adult tone of some of the jokes and a fair amount of swearing.

I guess I am missing something with this film….

I felt so out of touch with everyone when I got around to seeing this film. After all, it has a very respectable score on IMDb and a lot of folks seemed to like it–yet I found it about as enjoyable as dental surgery. Part of the problem might be that I only watched it because I was bored and on a cruise ship with a very limited selection of DVDs. Part of it might be because the day before (also out of boredom) I watched “Hot Tub Time Machine”–and it was practically the same film.

“The Hangover” is a story about four completely unlikable guys who seem more like caricatures than anyone you’d ever meet. In addition, they were so unlike each other you wonder if such friendships ever exist anywhere but in a Hollywood film. One is the guy who is about to get married–and wants to screw some hookers before he ties the knot (how heart-warming). One is a handsome school teacher who is just nasty and 100% unlikable. One is a screw-up and idiot–so they naturally make him the fat guy. And, the other is the man in a relationship with a castrating female. If these sound familiar, they were pretty much the same characters you’d see in “Hot Tub Time Machine”–but even more one-dimensional and this is especially true for the last two characters I mentioned. They go to Vegas, accidentally ingest some of the date rape drug and do lots of insane things–little of which is particularly funny. And this is the problem with the film. If you laugh at very low-brow humor, don’t mind that the plot makes no sense (such as the tasering scene) and think that a dirty word is THE punchline for most jokes, then you’ll enjoy the film. As for me, I can enjoy a dopey film (such as “Talladega Nights” or “Strange Brew”)–but there is a limit to dopiness. Plus, it’s hard to stick with a movie when you simply don’t care what happens to any of them. Overall, over-rated unlike any recent movie I have seen. Unpleasant, unfunny and for the undemanding.

A Baby In The Closet And A Tiger In The Loo

The Hangover is a great example of what the former frat boys from Animal House do the rest of their lives. Just simply more of the same.

I have no doubt that these four would have been members in good standing right along with Blutarsky, Otter, and the rest. Bradley Cooper, Zack Galifianakis, Ed Helms, and Justin Bartha decide on the way to Bartha’s wedding in Los Angeles to have the ultimate in bachelor parties with a night in the sin city of the west, Las Vegas.

It was one hell of a party, somebody slipped our merry men the date rape drug and they have absolutely no idea where they’ve been or what they’ve done. Worse than that they’ve got a baby in a closet and a tiger in the loo. But even worse than that, Bartha’s been misplaced and they haven’t the foggiest idea where to start looking for him.

If you’re taste runs to Animal House and Police Academy like comedies than The Hangover is definitely your cup of tea.
