Sophomore Storyline

A group of high school sophomores enjoy many adventures throughout tenth grade. Stuck between “kid-hood” and adulthood, the close-knit group crashes head first into their most formative year of high school. They’re joined by Mr. McKee, the newly hired janitor of the school, as he weaves his way through the hallways, mop in hand, observing the exploits of his sophomore son Jeremy and his lively gang of friends. Inside the classroom, their beloved American history teacher, Cap, wants life to be just as much fun as it is outside the school walls, while Miss Hutz, their feared math teacher, would rather everyone shut up and sit still. While Jeremy and Lucille get inspired by Cap, their buddy Lionel plots revenge on Miss Hutz, only to find himself locked in her bathroom with his pants down. Meanwhile, Pam, takes her buddy Eddie on a beer run in the dead of winter. All’s good, except for her mischievous little dog, Puffy, and Pam’s minor inconvenience of not having a driver’s license. In the center of it all is Sam, who’s waited fifteen long years to get his chance to ambush the freshmen on “Freshman Friday.” His older brother, “Blank,” may act as a pseudo mentor to the sophomores, but his main purpose for senior year is to date every Asian girl in tenth grade. Along the way, a group of seventh graders, known as “The Strummers”, led by the little “Casanova” Bob, plot an “end of the year” sleepover at their buddy Lenny’s house. They like Lenny, but it doesn’t hurt that his gorgeous older sister, Honey, sometimes sleepwalks with her shirt off. They learn their lessons, make new loves, and discover new things, and by the end of the year, whether they’re a sophomore, Strummer, teacher, or parent, one thing’s for sure, they’re not freshmen anymore.

A very fun film…

What a wonderful, fun film! The first thing that struck me right away was the film’s score. Fantastic choice of music throughout.  The tracks were fun, playful and also dark and suspenseful, all at the appropriate moments.  

SPOILER AHEAD

Script was tight with some great one liners. The film was shot really well. Winning moment when mr mckee is standing at the end of the diving board, pauses, reaches down, collects himself and chugs from the bottle THEN does the shot.  Perfect finish with “drink king” splashing into the pool.  Good shot at the end too with Sam atop the school roof.  Very iconic.

The film followed several stories that intertwined and worked really well together:

1 – teachers searching for meaning (cap, hutz) 2 – kids (freshmen) turning into men (sophomores) 3 – a father trying to find his way (mckee) 4 – students wanting to honor their heroic teachers 5 – young boys just being young boys (one especially who is learning lessons of passion/love)

All in all, a great effort by the director and his team. Beideck has a great eye and ear for film making. I look forward to his next project!

Dead Poets Society with a splash of Porky’s

For me Sophomore was a combination of Dead Poets Society with a splash of Porky’s (both of which I loved) It was extremely well written and produced and some really good acting from the likes of Amanda Plumber, Patrick Warburton, Robert Keiper, Erin Foley and some surprising performances from the younger kids. There were numerous hysterical scenes that are not to be missed and well executed. There was a real through line that kept the film going and kept the audience interested and caring about the characters and their development. Nice to see something that was fun and entertaining. Go see it you’ll be glad ya did!
