The Greatest Game Ever Played Storyline

Near the turn of the twentieth century, young Harry Vardon becomes a champion golfer but learns that his amazing skill is no match for the class boundaries that exclude him from “gentlemanly” English society. A dozen years later, a young American, Francis Ouimet, fights against the same prejudice, as well as his own father’s disdain, for a chance to participate in the U.S. Open against his idol — Harry Vardon. The struggles of both men for acceptance provides the background for an amazing contest of skills.

Must love golf…otherwise it’s just a well made about stuff you really don’t care about in the first place.

I have a confession. I hate golf and see no purpose in playing golf and would rather watch a blank television screen than a golf tournament. So it’s a very hard sell trying to get me to like a film about the topic. The only reason I rented the picture from Netflix was because it was included in Leonard Maltin’s book “151 Best Movies You’ve Never Seen” and I am trying to watch all 151 films. Plus, it IS possible I might enjoy the film despite myself.

I dare say that I am NOT unusual in not liking golf. In fact, most movie viewers don’t like golf. So it makes me wonder why Disney Studios made the film in the first place. And, despite being a well made movie, it didn’t do particularly well at the box office.

The movie was directed by Bill Paxton, the late actor who only directed a few projects. This is surprising, because the film is well made all around and doesn’t look like the work of a relative newbie. Technically speaking, it is well crafted…with some lovely acting, gorgeous camerawork and some odd but innovative CGI. I liked the look and feel of the film a lot. But there also were a few problems. Although the story of Francis Ouimet is compelling, the filmmakers chose to change some of the details…changes that seemed unnecessary. The biggest was making the match as close as they did in the film when Ouimet actually destroyed his two competitors in the tie-breaker. A few things also felt a bit like chiches–the father who hated his son playing the game THAT much, the fact that the 10 year-old caddy was THAT cute and precocious, the amount of class warfare in the story and a bit more. Much of this just felt like cinematic plot devices meant to inspire the audience more…when the story itself, warts and all, was more than enough already.

Overall, this is a film golf lovers would die to see…and for good reason. But as for the rest of us, even if well made…who really wants to see a golf picture?

A Nice Movie, Subtle and Believable

I don’t know a lot about the history of golf. I know the big guys like Bobby Jones and Ben Hogan. This movie is more about what led to Americans embracing the sport that was owned by the British Isles before that. The characters are very low key and gentlemanly. Watching the Masters after having seen the film, I love that there are still elements of a sport that go back to the beginnings. There are some loose cannons on the tour, but most of the golfers observe a code that keeps them on their best behavior. I was impressed by that tug between the aristocracy and those from humbler roots. This is a wonderful story about golf, but it’s also a great human story. See it for the performances. One thing I wondered about. They apparently didn’t have to mark a ball if it was in your line. There’s a scene where the ball is popped over the other ball.

Patience

Are you into Golf? How exciting is the game for you? Now I would not say that I am a fan of the game itself. As in I don’t really watch the tournaments and I don’t play it myself. Having said that, the way the movie portrays and shoots and displays everything is quite exceptional.

So you get sucked into this world, but of course it is more than that. It is real life and it is people that existed and things that happened (more or less, creative freedom and all that). Good actors elevate it and it does feel like a Disney kids movie to a degree. Which I don’t say with any bad sentiment, rather the opposite, as in quality wise. Still we know how these movies work and unless you are under a certain age, you will probably not be too surprised or enamoured by it. Good movie, nothing more, nothing less
