Hedwig and the Angry Inch Storyline

Hedwig, born male as Hansel in East Berlin, fell in love with an American G.I. and underwent a Gender Reassignment Surgery in order to marry him and flee to the West. Unfortunately, nothing worked out quite as it was supposed to – years later, Hedwig is leading her rock band on a tour of the U.S., telling her life story through a series of concerts at Bilgewater Inn seafood restaurants. Her tour dates coincide with those of arena-rock star Tommy Gnosis, a wide-eyed boy who once loved Hedwig – but then left with all her songs.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch Movie Reviews

fascinating character

Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell) is a rock singer from East Germany. Yitzhak (Miriam Shor) is his suffering companion. Hedwig has become tabloid news as the the gay transsexual lover to rock star Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). Hedwig has a lawsuit against Tommy as manager Phyllis Stein (Andrea Martin) has the band playing in unlikely places following Tommy’s tour.

Hedwig is a fascinating bitter character. Ultimately, his inch is too angry to be of much rooting interest. It’s a terrific performance and I can imagine it would be an amazing live performance. I wanted more comedic moments. The directing style is limited with some animation work. This is set up for a cult classic.

Unconventional, Weird, Bizarre and Funny – A Great Homage to the Glitter Rock

Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell) is in a transsexual singer and through the songs he sings in his American tour, he tells the story of his life.

He was a German boy called Hansel and raised by his mother in East Berlin. When he is twenty six years old, he is gay and meets Sgt. Luther Robinson (Maurice Dean Wint), an American officer, close to the wall and they fall in love with each other. In order to get married, Hedwig is submitted to a unsuccessful surgery for changing his sex. The doctor leaves one inch of penis in his body, instead of a vagina. His ‘husband’ leaves him, and he starts working as babysitter. When he meets the teenager Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt), he teaches him how to play guitar and to sing and the guy becomes a successful singer and steals Hedwig’s best song. Since then, Hedwig and his band are following Tommy’s tour, trying to retrieve their participation in the hit.

“Hedwig” is a very unconventional, weird, bizarre but funny film. It is a great homage to the glitter rock of David Bowie, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop. It is also a story of love and betrayal. John Cameron Mitchell deserved an Oscar for his role and performance as a transsexual rock singer. The songs are wonderful. Indeed this film may recall ‘Rocky Horror Show’ due to the bizarre and androgynous environment and the potentiality of cult- movie. However, it is indicated for a specific audience. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil):’Hedwig – Rock, Amor e Traição’ (‘Hedwig – Rock, Love and Betrayal’)

What?

When “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” came out, it received critical praise. When I saw it, I could barely understand it. True, it was about an East German man (John Cameron Mitchell) getting a sex change and forming a band, but what’s it all supposed to mean? The whole thing just came across as a series of strange images strung together. I couldn’t derive that the movie was really supposed to have a specific point.

I should identify that “HATAI” isn’t terrible. There certainly are some interesting scenes. It’s just that I couldn’t figure out why so many people considered it a masterpiece. A really good movie dealing with the Berlin Wall in “Das Versprechen/The Promise”. Maybe this one is worth seeing once.

Back when Dolly Parton (happy birthday, Dolly!) first started singing when she was very young, she probably never guessed that one of her songs would get used in a movie like this.
