She’s All That Storyline

She’s All That is your typical high school prom king and queen story and the run in defending the star status in the upcoming election. High school hottie, Zack Siler is dumped by his prom-queen girlfriend, the equally attractive and extremely popular, Taylor Vaughan who fell for a second-hand world reject TV soap star who she met over the spring break. Having been publicly dumped, Zack defends his discomposure by stating that Taylor is all make-up and wonder-bra and he can make any ordinary girl a prom queen with a similar package. His high-school buddy, Dean Sampson, engages him in a bet following this statement and picks the geeky looking Laney Boggs out of the crowd as the girl Zack must transform into the new prom queen. Zack agrees since he has no option, but as time passes and Laney begins to transform, Zack begins to find her attractive. While all that falls beautifully in place, it’s not your typical fairy-tale. Throw in Dean Sampson to complicate the situation, as when he first made the bet he never thought that Zack could rise to the challenge but looking at how Laney has transformed, it looks like Zack could be on a winning streak.

She’s All That Movie Reviews

pinnacle of teen cliché movies before the gross out era

King of high school Zach Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is unceremoniously dumped by hot queen Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe) for an idiot realty TV star (Matthew Lillard). While bragging about his prowess, he’s challenged by his douche friend Dean Sampson (Paul Walker) to remake class freak Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into a prom queen.

It’s sort of like a modern adaptation of Pygmalion. This and other teen movies are prime to be mocked. RLC is a hot girl, and of course we only realize it after she takes her glasses off. But every genre has it’s own clichés and it’s own stereotypes. It doesn’t negate the genre. This is a prime example of a movie taking all the clichés and making it all work for them.

The most important part is definitely RLC. She does the grumpy girl and the sweet girl. And she does both by being the cutest ever. There are also some great young actors of that era including Anna Paquin, Dulé Hill, and Gabrielle Union. The cast is a young energetic group.

Not the worst

While I would never put this film up with the contender teen flicks (American Pie for instance), if there was a pick between this and Bring it On, I’d go for the first. The story follows a smart, preppy, and popular teen (Freddie Prinze Jr.) called Zach who gets dumped by his girlfriend, but then takes a bet the to turn a outsider art girl (Rachel Leigh Cook has some great charm and sexuality) into prom queen. While I wouldn’t call this the best idea to turn someone’s mindset like that, the film makes it almost work, and slightly (though never completely) makes Zach’s lifestyle apealing. Sweet romantic comedy, though it isn’t a quality flick. B-

Mainly known for the title song ‘Kiss Me’

As a twist on the ‘ugly duckling’ story this is a decent enough romantic comedy, but one that can’t help but look a little dated.

Freddie Prince Jr made a few of this type of romantic comedies in the 90’s and is on good form here, supported by Matthew Lillard and Dule Hill of West Wing fame.

Once it gets over a slow first 30 mins it picks up considerably, with some nice scenes between Price Jr and Leigh Cook.

It’s not the best film ever made, but it’s enjoyable enough viewing.
