Léon: The Professional Storyline

Léon is an Italian immigrant who fled Italy after having committed a crime there. He now resides in New York City and is working for the mob boss “Uncle” Tony. He lives with his favorite plant in a small apartment in the city next door to a girl he occasionally speaks to whose father is a drug dealer working with crooked DEA officers. One day when she’s out getting groceries the crooked agents murder her entire family in a botched drug deal and upon discovering the massacre upon her return home she walks to the end of the hall to Léon’s apartment who lets her into not only his home, but into his life as well. Soon enough he’s teaching Mathilda, a young girl, how to be a professional hitman in order for her to learn enough to get revenge on the crooked cops who murdered her family. But when she goes in for revenge and is captured by the crooked agents, Léon comes and saves her and so begins the ultimate theme in the movie: Will Léon and Mathilda live happily ever after now that she’s opened up his heart, or will the crooked cops have something to say about it?

Being a good hitman takes more than merely a willingness to lay down one’s life.

I first saw this in the late 90s. Then again in the mid 2k on a dvd i own.

Revisited the remastered extended version last night with my family.

This movie is more than just a hitman or an assassin movie.

The music is top notch, the characters are very well developed, the action scenes n direction are stylish.

But the best part are the scenes between Reno n Portman. Leon is amazingly n very differently portrayed by Reno.

There is a Bollywood copy known as Bichoo (Scorpio).

The only thing good in the Bollywood movie is that the guy who played Tony gives away all of the hitman’s money to the girl whereas in the original, the character of Tony gives only a single currency note to Mathilda n keeps blabbing the same “safer than the usual bank story”.

Good but #27?! I just don’t get it.

I wish I’d never seen that “Leon: The Professional” was rated #27 on IMDb. With an outrageously high score like this, I get my expectations too high–way too high. Now I am not saying it’s a bad film but it’s certainly not THAT good. In fact, it’s not among writer/director Luc Besson’s best (“The Fifth Element” and “La Femme Nikita” are definitely better). Why is it rated so highly?

The film stars Jean Reno as a top ninja-like assassin. However, in an odd twist, this lone wolf killer falls in with a girl (Natalie Portman) and he becomes her foster dad. This is hard to believe but even harder to believe is his training her to be a killer as well as he going after the baddie lone wolf style! And, speaking of the baddie, Gary Oldman pretty much plays the same guy he played in “The Fifth Element”. Saying the film has some ridiculously difficult to believe aspects is certainly an understatement. Now I am not saying it’s bad…but it cannot be a great film, in my opinion, if so much of it is difficult to believe. Interesting, yes….top 100…no way.

By the way, I think it’s safe to assume that Portman was named Mathilda in the film because of her and her family’s strong similarity to the characters in the Raold Dahl book “Matilda”.

Intense, gripping, stylish and poignant with one of the best feature debuts ever

Luc Besson’s film Leon:The Professional is a superb one. Visually, it is very stylish, with striking location work, atmospheric lighting and really authentic and bold cinematography. The soundtrack also does very well in enhancing the mood of each scene, and Besson’s direction is faultless.

There is also a gripping story with well crafted characters particularly Mathilda and Jean Reno’s character Leon, a cracking script and crisp pacing and while there are some over-the-top and intense moments particularly with Stansfield and the beginning, particularly as the chemistry between Mathilda and Leon expands there are some poignant ones too.

The acting is excellent. Jean Reno is charismatic and commanding in the title role while Gary Oldman is wildly bombastic as Stansfield. But I was especially impressed by Natalie Portman, who delivers one of the best and most captivating feature debuts ever. In conclusion, a fantastic film. 10/10 Bethany Cox
