Miller’s Crossing Storyline
It’s Prohibition era 1930s as gang wars tear apart the city of gang lord Leo and his lieutenant Tom Regan. Tom is upset when Leo declines underling Johnny Caspar’s request to kill the crooked Bernie. Despite Tom’s objections, Leo thinks he made the right decision because Bernie is Verna’s brother and Verna is Leo’s girl. Unfortunately, Caspar seems to be growing in power and just when Leo needs Tom’s help most Tom admits he’s been fooling around with Verna. Tom is thrown out of Leo’s mob and with nothing else to do he decides to join Caspar. But Tom is also talking to Bernie and Verna, and Caspar’s ruthless henchman Eddie Dane starts to get suspicious. His suspicions rise when Tom is ordered to kill Bernie himself, but no one knows whether or not Tom carried out the order. Leaving Caspar searching for his desired power, Dane searching for answers, Verna searching for her brother and Tom searching for his own heart… if he has one anymore.

Miller’s Crossing Movie Reviews
excellent 90s version of an old gangster flick
This movie reminded me of an old Warner Brothers gangster flick–the sort of ones that Humphrey Bogart and Jimmy Cagney made famous BUT with the addition of blood, violence and a little bit of sex to make it for a contemporary audience. Plus, in addition to these updates, the plot is quite a bit more complicated and the characters’ motivations (especially the lead’s) are often unclear. The movie’s language, especially, seemed straight out of this Hollywood past and was very enjoyable. The acting, writing and direction really couldn’t have been much better. It was especially exciting to watch the characters LEO and CASPER chew up the scenes like Edward G. Robbinson! Despite this film coming from the Coen brothers, it is NOT a comedy, though there are a few mildly amusing moments.
Also, because of the high level of gore (and a scene of a person puking in close-up), the movie was given an R-rating and should not be seen by kids.
Effective early Coen
This early Coen Brothers outing is a notable stab at the gangster genre, although as with many nominal gangster movies the gangster material turns out to merely be the background for what is a tale of human character and motivation, of loyalty and redemption, of following and leadership, and of plenty more besides. I found this a little similar to the warring gang plotline of YOJIMBO with the visual flourishes and look of BOARDWALK EMPIRE, and of course Steve Buscemi has a cameo here too. The cast are very good, both from the big names – Finney, Byrne – and the less well known actors, Jon Polito in particular standing out. There’s plenty of violence and action for those who like that stuff, but it’s the double-crossing and introspection that makes this work.
Coen brothers gangster masterpiece
It’s the Prohibition era. Leo O’Bannon (Albert Finney) is an Irish mob boss who controls the city. Tom Reagan (Gabriel Byrne) is his right hand man. Verna (Marcia Gay Harden) has the boss wrapped around her little finger. Only Leo doesn’t know that Verna is also sleeping with Tom. Italian rival Johnny Caspar (Jon Polito) wants to kill bookie Bernie Bernbaum (John Turturro) who’s been taking advantage of him. Tom tries to get Leo to give up Bernie but he’s Verna’s brother and Leo refuses. Leo and Johnny go to war. Leo kicks Tom out when he reveals his affair with Verna. Tom goes to work for Caspar and he’s commanded to execute Bernie in the woods at Miller’s Crossing.
It’s the third big great movie from the Coen brothers and they show a real mastery of the cinematic arts. It is beautifully shot, ultra violent, and the actors are some of the best around. It is hard-boiled gangster noir and one of the best for fans of the genre. The mannerisms and dense dialog can put off some people and may lose some who don’t pay enough attention. There are no good guys in this story. It is strictly anti-hero stuff. That may also put off some people. The audience is asked to pull for Gabriel Byrne even though he’s still a gangster, just a more reasonable one.
