The Birds Storyline

San Francisco based socialite Melanie Daniels, whose father is a newspaper publisher and whose mother ran off when Melanie was eleven, used to lead a fast and carefree life, although she is trying now to do useful and meaningful work with her time. The two holdovers from her old life are that fast and loose reputation, and playing practical jokes at whatever cost and whatever expense the outcome. It is on a prank, this time on her, that she officially meets criminal lawyer Mitch Brenner, the prank largely centered on the topic of birds. Wanting to repay him for the prank, Melanie drives to his weekend home up the coast outside the working class community of Bodega Bay to surprise him, there where he lives with his widowed mother and his eleven year old sister, Lydia Brenner and Cathy Brenner. While Cathy likes Melanie, Lydia is distant toward her, much like she is toward any woman interested in Mitch, such as the local schoolteacher, Annie Hayworth, who originally moved to Bodega Bay from San Francisco four years ago as Mitch’s girlfriend at the time. The day of Melanie’s arrival in Bodega Bay, a number of odd occurrences happen all with respect to birds, one of those incidents being a sole seagull swooping down and giving her one good peck on the head. With Melanie still in town, the bird occurrences become more frequent, massive and violent, they seemingly wanting to kill. Mitch notices that the attacks go in waves and are generally in the same pattern of the birds massing quietly, attacking all of a sudden then disappearing to mass again quietly somewhere else. Melanie and the Brenners have to decide how long to stay in Bodega Bay before it becomes too dangerous, by which time it may be too late.

Still terrifying.

What if….. imagine the unthinkable happened, and all of a sudden, The Birds attacked….

You have to hand it to Hitchcock, he knew how to scare people, by taking the ordinary, the everyday, and twisting it around, and making it scary, he did that pretty much to perfection here.

So the first half of the movie is slow, it’s almost sedate, not a lot actually happens, however the second half is completely different, you can only imagine what audiences back in 1963 thought, as of 2022 it still terrifies.

It looks really good, the special effects for the time actually hold up very well.

Tippi Hedren is impressive as Melanie, it’s a very sincere, strong performance.

The next time you put some bird food out for the jackdaws and magpies…..just wonder what if, what if the unthinkable did actually happen!

Great hooror from the real master of suspense, 9/10.

“The Birds” has always been one of my lesser favorites from Hitchcock

I’ve been watching “The Birds” since I was too young to even remember, and when I was moving across countries once I even caught the sequel on television (which is just gruesome and lacking the suspense of this). However “The Birds” has always seemed slightly uneven to me, as if the premise itself is so absurd that I have a hard time taking the film entirely seriously.

In my opinion the best Hitchcock films are “North by Northwest,” “The 39 Steps,” “The Lady Vanishes,” “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” “Vertigo,” “Rear Window” and of course my favorite horror film of all-time, “Psycho.” “The Birds” is a good film and very well-made but because its content is so silly in nature you may find yourself having a hard time taking it all as seriously as Hitch expects us to.

So overall, it is a fine movie, but not one of the Master of Suspense’s greatest.

too shallow a plot even for a Twilight Zone episode

My daughter informed me that the movie, The Birds, was based on a short story–only 33 pages long, in fact. I only found this out recently, but I am not the least bit surprised, as I found the movie to be way too shallow to deserve the positive acclaim it has received. I think what had happened was that by the mid-1960s, Hitchcock had established quite a reputation for himself so people just assumed this was yet another great film. I don’t think so. To me, it seems that the brilliance of Vertigo and North By Northwest just isn’t evident in this shallow movie. Okay, here’s the plot: In a small town, the birds go nuts and start attacking people. A man meets a woman in the midst of the carnage, so, of course, they must fall in love (or something) rather than just LEAVE THE STINKING TOWN. Yes, I know that they were “trapped” in the town–no one ever heard of using a car? Yeah, the gas station blew up, but that STILL doesn’t explain this. If you want to see a movie about a town in terror, watch Village of the Damned–this one SHOULD have been the Hitchcock movie!
