Doesn’t matter!! 10 stars period!!

M. A. S. H TV is one of the best sitcoms ever put on television. You will never find such creation, as a team with the actors,the writers the producers and everyone on set that worked so well together. It’ll never happen again! (Except cheers) They set the standard. This special episode was great..maybe just a reminder to people..maybe to the younger generations how wonderful the show is… they will get to see what great acting ..writing should be.. hopefully it will open the younger generations eyes and minds to one of the best TV. Sitcoms…i have to agree it really did change TV..like the title says!!

Nothing we haven’t seen before.

Having just completed a full M*A*S*H rewatch, I figured I would catch this retrospective on Hulu (I had no idea this aired on Fox after New Years). There really wasn’t any new ground broken with this special, but I always enjoy seeing interviews with the people that made the show so memorable. Must admit I felt a little weird seeing comments from actors who have been gone for some time.

I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s and MASH was always must see television in my household. I remember the finale was a huge deal, in fact we watched it in school!

I think it might have been a nice touch to have some sort of in memoriam for the many former stars who have passed on, and although there was nothing in the interviews MASH fans haven’t seen before I still enjoyed the special well enough.

*The press conference announcing the finale was new to me, I really enjoyed that segment.

Why?

As a M*A*S*Hophile since the series started I have to ask why anyone thought another retrospective was needed. It’s not.

This special does not provide any new information to a casual viewer who has previously read/seen anything about this series.

Interviews with deceased actors are recycled without any disclaimer they were shot decades ago. And Mac is again shown in the golf cart.

Other interviews may be newer but don’t offer anything new. Yes, we know Loretta was fond of Harry based on her comments year ago. Do we need a new interview that says the same thing?

Besides, memories fade so the newer interviews are less reliable.

Behind the scenes footage. I didn’t notice any.

If you want to learn about this show I suggest you watch and/or read one of the many articles/videos done decades ago, when memories were fresh and facts weren’t tarnished.

Had too much fun

I have to admit i always hated teen titans go for replacing teen titans but, as an old man I think i had way too much fun watching this movie

Keep It Up

When many of us wanted a revival of Teen Titans, I doubt a crossover movie with Teen Titans Go was something we wanted. Just like with Teen Titans Go To The Movies, expectations can be turned on our heads. This movie is very funny, with a nice amount of action and both teams portrayed respectfully. A nice solid message on teamwork helps make the movie great.

Well, that was surprizing! Being a long term TTG fan I highly anticipated the release of this movie, but from the fact that this one was a direct-to-DVD-release with a clearly smaller budget, less advertizing and a trailer that, while not being bad, didn’t catch my attention quite as much as the one for the previous movie, I assumed this one was gonna be good, but not nearly as good as TTGTTM. However, Teen Titans Go vs Teen Titans shattered this and many others of my expectations. It might be just that I have just finished watching it, but I am otherwise fairly positive that I prefer this to TTGTTM and is now my favourite superhero/animated film. This film went in a different direction, to the TTGTTM one. That one was a hilarious direct mockery of bigger products in the superhero industry than it, while this one is more like a fan service for the superhero fans of both generations. That movie focused mostly on comedy with some heartfelt moments, while this one had a lot of comedy, but was actually mostly focused on intense fight scenes. That makes perfect sense, as fully-comedic spoofs of the superhero genre is what Teen Titans Go! is all about, and fighting sequences is largely what the old Teen Titans was mostly about.

Being that good wasn’t even close to being the only thing that surprized me about TTGvsTT. No, no, no! The majority of the movie’s plot is obvious from the trailer, but the way it’s executed is what’s unexpected to me. For one, I didn’t expect this movie to have random musical numbers like in TTGTTM, but as Teen Titans Go! have always been exellent in the music departament it shouldn’t be so shocking. Without going into spoiler territory, I will just state that another thing I didn’t think was going to happen is the film focusing so much screen and story time on Raven (both of them). While at no point does it feel like an all-out Raven© movie, it definitely is more about her than the other titans. As Raven is by far my favourite titans and superhero, I didn’t mind it at all and actually prefer it that way.

There is one factor about the movie that can make it look bad in a spare amount of moments, and that is the animation. The animation in TTGvsTT is….weird. The movie is animated entirely in Flash, as expected from a TTG movie, but the animation of the main characters and the secondary assets is of a very confusing quality. It is definitely more energetic and expressive than the animated series, but it doesn’t have the high enough jump in quality that the theatrical release of TTGTTM had in order to look so fantastic. Here the animators are trying to make the characters move around as much as possible, without really having resources than the TV series. Part of why the TTG series animation looks so appealing to me, despite being a person who typpically prefers hand-drawn, is that the characters at any given time are either very still or move really fast and the transitions from one to another are also done as fast as possible, to give it a sort of hand-drawn feel to it. However, here the animation is made to make the movements on the characters more human-realistic, which makes it less… cartoony-realistic. One small quirk I noticed, for example, is TTG Robin’s hair and cape moving around as he walks about or makes sharp movements. This is not present in the show. It may make it more realistic, but it makes it look worse in a cartoon sense, as the movements on the cape are too smooth and slow. The original TT characters have almost the same character designs, with minute changes, but move differently as they are now in flash. You get used to it during the runtime and it isn’t all that noticeable. Anyway, I spent too much time on a small nitpick.

When I say intense fight scenes, I mean intense fight scenes. Towards the end I seriously felt like I was watching a Dragon Ball movie, it was that intense. I can see how they may have saved some of budget when it came to the first part of the movie to make the last part look as good as possible. I originally went to see “Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse” when it was in theaters and it was meh, better than I expected it, and I can say that the whole alternate-versions concept was done very similarly there first, but it is definitely much better done here.

Overall, I recommend this movie to everyone. It has fantastic action, perfect comedy, great characters, well written story, catchy music and surprizing twists of events. It really does have something for everyone! I encourage you to buy this in DVD or Blu-ray, and support it however you can. If they sell enough copies they might just show this in theaters, which I would definitely see.

What a difference a year makes

I have been watching the annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony for years, and have always enjoyed seeing these great artists getting the ultimate recognition. Best of all, these artists perform a mini-set live and some of them have brought some truly memorable moments and collaborations.

“The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2020 Inductions” (2020 release; 128 min.) opens with some words of welcome by Dave Grohl that “we can’t gather in person this year” (due to COVID-19 of course). Ah yes, the little virus that would “magically go away”, per the current POTUS who just got fired by the American people. We then dive into the first induction, the Doobie Brothers, who also celebrate 50 years as a band this year. Next up is Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, the king of industrial goth. They are introduced by Iggy Pop. The format of this year’s HOF Induction is now clear: introduction, video recap of the artist’s achievements, and then closing out with ZOOM thank you(s). Next is Notorious BIG. I was struck when this segment reminded me that he was only 24 when killed, wow. Next up is Depeche Mode, one of my all-time fave bands, and introduced here by uber DM fan Charlize Theron. When watching the archive footage of the very early years, what is striking is how incredibly young the guys area (Dave Gahan was 18 when joining the band in 1980). In the annual obituary remembrance segment, Eddie Van Halen gets a long look. Next induction is of T Rex, introduced here by none other than Ringo Starr, who was a close friend of the band’s ringleader/singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Bolan. T Rex was a one hit wonder in the US for “Get It On (Bang a Gong)” but in the UK and Europe had an impressive string of hit singles and albums. I grew up with these guys during my teenage years in Belgium. So glad to see them recognized and induced into the R&R HOF after all these years. The last artist induced this year is Whitney Houston. Someone please remind me of the rock & roll aspects of her career and music?

It’s nobody’s fault that this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony had to be completely remote and virtual. But all it did was to emphasize what we are missing: the outright joy of being together and celebrate rock music by providing live performances and unexpected on stage collaborations. Let’s hope that next year’s R&R HOF Induction ceremony will bring back those free-flowing moments.

An Amazing Lost Treasure Reveals the Story of the “Greatest”

Ali & Cavett was enthusiastically welcomed in its world premiere at Austin’s SXSW Film Festival. The film was introduced by film critic Leonard Maltin who interviewed Dick Cavett afterwards. The documentary was made with recovered footage of more than a dozen appearances that Muhammad Ali made on Dick Cavett’s talk show. Ali was electrifying. When he was at his height his speech was mesmerizing and he was really a force of nature. The film beautifully captures Ali as a sports figure, but more importantly as a cultural figure who broke barriers to challenge barriers of race and religion. He challenged the U.S. government’s attempt to draft him and although he won, he paid a very heavy price. It shows him with his friend Dick Cavett and brings the politics and social conflict around Ali into clear focus. These tapes are a lost treasure. The director skillfully edits the tapes with other footage to provide a mini-biography of “The Greatest.” The film would fit together well with the Oscar-winning documentary “When We Were Kings” about the Ali- 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle” with George Foreman. I hope that the film gets distribution, because it can help bring this larger than life figure a new generation that came of age when he was well past his prime. Highly Recommended.

A whole lot more about Ali than it is about Cavett

“Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes” (2018 release; 95 min.) is a documentary centered around Muhammed Ali’s frequent guest appearances on The Dick Cavett Show. As the movie opens, we see a multitude of short clips where Cavett introduces Ali, while a voice-over reminds us how big the show was in that era (late 60s-early/mid 70s), taking it “to the edge of the racial debate in this country”. We then go back in time, understanding how these two met in the early 60s when Cavett was working on the Jerry Lewis show, and we work our way up in time from there. At this point we are 10 min. into the documentary.

Couple of comments: the documentary is the directing debut of Richard S. Bader, the long-standing Dick Cavett expert who has produced a number of Cavett-associated releases. He co-wrote the script with Cavett himself for this film. While the movie’s title indicates equal billing for Ali and Cavett, in reality this movie is a whole lot more about Ali than it is about Cavett, to the point where it seems Cavett is mere background dressing, and providing a convenient entrance angle to look at Ali’s fascinating, if complicated, life as an athlete, political activist, and all-around global mega-star. “Ali is much smarter than he lets on”, observes Cavett, but I don’t know if that is the case, as the many clips ooze with Ali’s savvy and smarts. “Was Ali a racist? a mouthpiece for the Nation of Islam?”, someone ponders, and that is a darn good question, and one that is impossible to fully answer. Certainly Ali said things that, if there were spoken by a white person, would immediately be condemned as racist. But one thing that nobody can negate or deny: Ali (as demonstrated in his many appearances on the Dick Cavett Show) was a magnetic personality and an amazing boxer. We can only wonder how much more he would have accomplished in the boxing ring had he not been banned for 3+ years in the prime of his boxing career. Back to Cavett: it is clear from the clips and from Cavett’s own comments taped for this film that his affection for Ali is genuine and runs deep.

“Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes” originally premiered 2 years ago at SXSW and then… nothing. But it started showing earlier this week on HBO and is now available at HBO On Demand and other streaming services. I quite enjoyed this documentary, and if you have any interest in Muhammed Ali, I might suggest you check it out and draw your own conclusion.

Needed More Focus And Less Re-Hashing

When focusing on a documentary subject like Muhammad Ali, who has been picked apart by storytellers and journalists almost ad nauseam and will continue to be until the end of time, it is easy to fall into the trap of re-hashing all the classic stories and losing focus on the uniqueness of the concept that may have prompted the new doc on him. While “Ali & Cavett” isn’t bad by any means, it does spring that trap far too much to be considered “great”.

Ostensibly, the angle on Ali that this documentary takes is examining The Greatest via his appearances on the popular 1970s TV talk show hosted by Dick Cavett, who was able to get some candid and genuine moments from the gregarious Ali when others failed at the task.

Those interview clips are indeed fascinating, and in terms of the info this doc presents on Ali’s involvement within the Nation of Islam (and how he was very likely used as their puppet/mouthpiece), it did provide me with some interesting information to chew on. To be honest, I wish the entire runtime would have simply focused on those two concepts (Cavett & Ali’s religion/politics). Had that happened, this probably would have received a higher star ranking from me.

As I said in the opening, though, “Ali & Cavett” spends too much time re-hashing Ali’s boxing exploits and showing the same clips or sound bytes we’ve seen over and over already. Ali’s larger-than-life status likely renders this too irresistible for the film makers to avoid, especially if roping in casual viewers is important (and it always is). For someone like myself who has “seen them all” when it comes to Ali docs, though, a solid 70% of this one is “old news”.

So, while I can’t say this is a bad documentary by any stretch of the imagination, the amount of fresh, new material is relatively small within in. As such, your enjoyment of it overall may be determined by your previous Ali knowledge level.

Whatever your viewpoint on this after it had ended, this remains one of the most engaging and talked about programmes of 2021.

Up there with Princess Diana’s Panorama interview in terms of scandal.

It’s as if she bought a ticket to see the movie ‘Titanic’ and was then shocked to see that it sank.
