Weaknessness and strength

Seems this film was able to overcome some of the common pitfalls of low budget and use of first time actors by its great directing and soundtrack. The director knows these things and it’s beautiful to watch him somehow magically take what otherwise could have been a fatal weakness and leverage it to create a very moving and compassionate story. Except for one character, who we are not meant to like (the mean dishwasher who did a great job as unlikable), the movie makes you love each character. The length at first seemed long but as the movie unfolds the longer length is used to explore each character more, making them of course more lovable.

Highly recommend giving this Indy flick a chance.

How can you not like this movie?

This movie was filled with hope and loss. The topics were so real for me. But it left me feeling better about life after it was over! I enjoyed it! Please watch it!

A Very inspirational Topic

This movie was very well put together. I love how it shows the stages of bullying and how you can over come each situation. This movie caught my family and friends attention. I even received a personal review yesterday from my neighbor who also enjoyed the film. Great job on this.

Enthralling, fantastic, intriguing, truly remarkable!

Shawshank Redemption is without doubt one of the best films ever made, and definitely the best film of 1994. Yes, it is better than Lion King, and I really like that too. It is not only enthralling but powerful and moving too. I will confess that I didn’t understand it when I first saw it as a lot happens in the film, and I have now seen it three times. I seriously hope, that those who ignored the film when it was first released now recognise it as a great film, as it really is. The dialogue was extremely well-written, with lines that really stick in your mind. The cinematography and music are both gorgeous, and the prison itself is like a character that dominates the film. In the script, there are some true elements of Stephen King Now I admit I am not a huge king fan, and usually don’t like coarse language in books. But in his books like It, which is very good, I have accepted the language represents brutality and rebellion, shown perfectly in the film with the battle of acceptance I suppose between the inmates and the superiors(like the scene with the warden yelling coarse language at the new inmates lined up in a row at the beginning.)The acting was exceptional. I am not hugely familiar with Tim Robbins, but he did a great job in a very demanding role. The best performance however, comes from Morgan Freeman as Red, who was seriously robbed of that Oscar, that he lost to Tom Hanks for Forrest Gump. Freeman reminds me very strongly, or his style of acting does, remind me of that of Sean Connery, suave yet very charismatic. Acting isn’t just about your vocal range, it’s about depth, which was what Freeman certainly had. In short, Freeman was brilliant in what could be his best performance. The scene where the inmates are listening to the Mozart aria over the speakers was a beautiful profound moment, and I actually cried in Brook’s death scene. Very rarely do King adaptations translate-to screen well, because of the large scale of the author’s books, with the exception of this and the Shining. Some like It and Dreamcatcher are genuinely memorable but have a number of flaws that prevent them from being classed as outstanding. And some, like Thinner and Tommyknockers that border on unwatchable. In conclusion Shawshank is a brilliant film, that is worthy of the credit it has been denied for so-long. 10/10 of course. “I Had To Go To Prison To Learn To Be A Crook”

None of the usual otherworld creatures that populate the works of Stephen King are to be found in The Shawshank Redemption. But the real world of that Maine prison has some bizarre rules of its own and there’s a whole new reality within those walls.

In the tradition of Cool Hand Luke and Birdman Of Alcatraz comes Tim Robbins who was a banker on the outside, but when he caught his wife cheating on him with a golf pro from their country club, he’s convicted of putting eight bullets in them, four apiece and tried and sentenced to two consecutive life terms in Shawshank prison. Like Luke and Bob Stroud he works out his own rehabilitation and rebels against the prison system.

He may be a con, but Robbins still has all his knowledge of finances and pretty soon he’s made himself quite invaluable to the warden and the rest of the staff at the prison. At the same time he and the cell block scrounger Morgan Freeman develop a close personal relationship. In the end they beat the system in a most unique way.

There have been some classic prison films made ever since The Big House at the dawn of the talkies. Two I’ve already mentioned. My favorite prison film is Robert Redford’s Brubaker, but The Shawshank Redemption comes pretty close. As does The Green Mile which was also directed by Frank Darabont.

Darabont got an Oscar nomination as did the film itself and as did Morgan Freeman for Best Actor. The Shawshank Redemption was in for a flock more Oscar nominations in 1994. A couple other good performances are that of James Whitmore the institutionalized con who is there for 50 years and paroled and just can’t make it on the outside. He will break your heart as will Gil Bellows who plays a fresh, but rather likable young con who runs afoul of the warden.

Speaking of which Bob Gunton as the warden will positively chill you with his corruption. You would have to go back all the way to the James Cagney classic, The Mayor Of Hell where Dudley Digges was the warden of boys reformatory to find a warden that is as sanctimonious and as corrupt as Gunton. This is a man who gives Bibles out to each inmate hoping that the reading of the Good Book will improve the moral fiber of the convicts. At the same time he’s raking in money every which way he can and a rather special punishment is meted out to him by Robbins.

The Shawshank Redemption may not have monsters and other worldly creatures that normally characterize a Stephen King story. But the world of Shawshank prison is bizarre enough for any normal person if you see this wonderfully crafted and acted film.

All-time prison film classic

Based on a novella by Stephen King, this is better than even THE GREEN MILE and goes to show that you don’t need supernatural elements in a prison story – the setting is enough to carry a film as it is. SHAWSHANK often shows up as the “best film of all time” on various movie lists – including here on the IMDb – and, whilst I don’t necessarily agree about that, it is a very good film indeed, near flawless in fact.

Every technical element of the film is spot-on, from direction to music, editing, and acting; Morgan Freeman delivers his best ever performance whilst Tim Robbins shows us what a great character actor he is. Even better, for a genre fan like me, is seeing acting favourites like Clancy Brown, William Sadler, Brian Libby, and James Whitmore all appearing in the film together and playing more than just stock good or bad guy roles. Every actor is great here, and the script (which sticks closely to King’s writing) is nigh-on perfect. Emotion, thrills, drama, and the triumph of the human spirit are all present in this movie, which is one of the greatest prison flicks ever.

Every Doctor Has Its Day…

A delight for all Whovian fans. Celebrating the five decade spans. Time Lord with a blue box. Running rings around clocks. Resolutely proud Gallifreyan.

There are Zygons who mimic ID. Liz the 1st who can be quite stroppy. While the moment grasps Rose. Clara strikes a great pose. Kate and Osgood make perfect copy.

This is The Day of Doctor. Universal hero and wise protector. Filled with great dialogue. The ending leaves us agog. Here’s to fifty more years to our saviour.

Doctor Who – The Day of the Doctor

I have to say after watching The Day of the Doctor, that I consider myself quite a rich fan of the long-time show. To have Steven Moffat as show runner and his magnificently brilliant staff putting together these complex, intricately plotted episodes, it is a delight to be alive to see it. I just wish my Uncle Bonnie would have persevered cancer to see where Doctor Who was going. The respect and admiration for the characters (actors who portrayed the Doctor and his adversaries) is presented in such an appreciative fashion, and to know this makes me proud of those carrying on the legacy first introduced in the 60s. For a little while the show was gone but never forgotten (the 90s is the dark decade for Who fans and I feel deep regret my uncle had to go so long without the show to enjoy) and now we, as Who fans, benefit and reap the rewards as viewers during this era.

I guess the best way to describe The Day of the Doctor is precious. It brings two beloved actors portraying the Doctor in during one of its greatest eras on television—Matt Smith and David Tennant—and a screen legend, John Hurt, as “the doctor who made a devastating decision that destroyed his own people and their fierce rivals, the Daleks”. Hurt’s “War Doctor” has been “buried away” as the shameful time lord future Doctors wish they could completely forget. This episode shows Hurt dealing with the option to destroy Gallifrey with a doomsday device, but it has a “conscience” and appears in the lovely form of Billie Piper (she remains a personal fave of mine from her days with Eccleston in the early 2000s). Piper’s Rose is actually “Big Bad Wolf”, and she attempts throughout the episode to talk Hurt’s Doctor out of using it to wipe out Gallifrey.

In a top secret location in the heart of London known as the Undergallery, a specific painting shows the supposed fall of Gallifrey during the Time War. Zygons, ugly slug like creatures with suctions that shapeshift into human form through the use of the hosts they imitate, existed back at the time of Elizabeth I, and her association with Tennant’s Doctor (they marry!) allows us to see how the creatures plan to use paintings as a method of travel, awaiting a significant change in the world from the primitive time they were currently existing. So they were to “invade the future from the past”, waiting for the world’s advancement before conquering it! Prior to the decision on whether or not to condemn the innocent aliens on Gallifrey, the three Doctors have a chance to rescue modern day London, circa 2013, from annihilation. To halt the plans of the Zygons to conquer London, members of an elite alien task force led by the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart will perhaps allow the city to be detonated by a nuclear weapon. So the Doctors will need to talk her out of something truly terrible that would be a mistake. This intentionally parallels the ongoing struggle within Hurt’s War Doctor.

This episode neatly gives us Who fans an opportunity to see the Time War, two awesome Doctor Who actors (and a third to be added to the acting cannon to attain Hurt further recognition in his career) together to share some truly marvelous screen time (their banter is lively, clever, witty, and quite funny), and a delightful cameo by Tom Baker—a Who fan favorite from the 70s—as a museum curator. Baker and Smith together is certain to be a lasting moment in Who lore forever. Tennant just slides the Doctor Who role back like comfortable loafers, and his return is a welcome one. Hurt’s old timer constantly bewildered at his future selves is a treat, particularly his remarks about the sonic screwdriver, kissing, and Smith’s use of his hands when talking. Oh, and the Fez is always a fun sight gag for Smith’s particular Doctor. How it is used for the “time fissure (a tear in the fabric of time), which is able to open a gateway that brings three Doctors (Time Lords) together” is ingenious. The Day of the Doctor is a necessity, in my opinion, if you are a Doctor Who nut like many of us sci-fi fans, both young and old. It is a treasure. I’m tickled it was so successful and so universally seen across the world. The series’ value brings a warm feeling to my heart. The nice mention of the “round things, always loved the round things” in regards to the design of the older inside of the decor of the Tardis was awesome. The final scene with all the Doctors is wonderful, an awe-inspiring, loving homage to the series.

Doctor Who Considered as an exhibit for Sydney’s “In Defense of Poesie”

In my reviews of various episodes of Doctor Who I try to take a balanced view, to place each particular episode in the context of the series and to highlight some particular aspect of the production. So, when I first thought about this review, I thought that it would include references to other anniversary shows, the Anniversary Season, the one-shot DIMENSIONS IN TIME, which was so something-for-everyone that it wound up having to be written out of continuity.

Then I saw this episode and the constant assault of jokes and catchphrases, of old, ridiculous scarves and space-time telegraphs, of cameo appearances by Significant Players, of Daleks and Zygons and members of the Lethbridge-Stewart family, as well as the pleasure of watching Matt Smith and David Tennant wrangle under the grumpy eye of John Hurt — which recalls William Hartnell grumbling at successors Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee for a clown and a fop — well, my critical faculties just went into overload and broke down. I was just another geeky fanboy having a great time and I don’t care who knows it.

And now that I think about it: what’s wrong with that assessment? The answer is: nothing. This is what escapist fantasy like Doctor Who is supposed to do: lift us out of ourselves, give us and hour or so free from the weight of the world. That is what this episode does and does brilliantly. If there is a serious message hidden in there — and I believe there is — then that is well and good. As W.S. Gilbert had one of the characters in his comic operettas with Arthur Sullivan say, “He who’d make his fellow creature wise must always gild the philosophic pill.” But even if you don’t see it, the Fiftieth Anniversary Special is great escapist fun.

Now, if you will excuse me, I am going to watch it again.

The show A7X fans have been waiting for

Last year, Avenged Sevenfold released the documentary ‘All Excess’. While it was a a great entry to any fans collection, most had been holding out for a full live concert. And now, a year later, it’s finally hear, and boy was it worth the wait!

Live in the LBC captures the band in perfect form during the hometown show as headline act on the 2008 Taste of Chaos tour. Like their recent self titled album, it opens with the politically charged rocker Critical Acclaim. And like the rest of the concert, it is performed very well and even manages to surpass the album version.

The set-list is good and captures the highlights from their new album (Including an amazing performance of A Little Piece of Heaven), the singles from City of Evil, and a cover of Pantera’s Walk sung by a fan from the crowd.

While this is kind of a greatest hits set-list, and mainly aimed at their newer fans, Avenged haven’t forgotten the fans that have been their from the beginning. They prove this by playing two songs off their 2003 album, Waking the Fallen. These are brilliant performances of the single Unholy Confessions, and the fan favourite Second Heartbeat. To even further satisfy these fans, Shadows even brings back some screaming vocals.

I would recommend this DVD to all A7X fans. Weither you’re a new fan, or a fan from the days before they were a household name. I would also recommend it to fans of rock/metal music, or are just looking for a kick ass show. Check this out, you won’t be disappointed!

A Very Good Over The Top Little Package!!!

This DVD/CD combo is like a gift from the rock gods themselves! Not only is this showing off their captivating live abilities, but it also introduces us to 9 great b-sides and 2 remixed songs! The highlight tracks of the album side of it are Dancing Dead, Tension, Until The End, and Girl I Know. I recommend downloading those tracks and giving them a listen. The DVD side of it is perfect. Almost an hr and a half worth of concert footage and wet in the pants performance! Synyster Gates doing his amazing guitar abilities, Zacky Vengeance playing his amazing flowed rhythm alongside, Johnny Bass putting the ASS in BASS, The Rev doing his on beat, double bass drumming, and M Shadows doing a great job and singing and throwing in some screaming as well. Just when you think the concert is over, they come back out and play an extra song for everyone, which was my personal favorite, “A Little Piece Of Heaven.” I HIGHLLYYYYY recommend this album/DVD pack to everyone because it is only $14.99 and you get more than what you pay for!
