Under the Boardwalk Storyline

Nick Rainwood and Allie Yorpin are a modern day Romeo and Juliet living in southern California, separated by the unbridgeable gulf of their backgrounds and torn between loyalty to their “gangs” and their real desires.

Under the Boardwalk Movie Reviews

“Surf all your life. Just don’t be a surfer all your life.”

This story opens 20 years into the “future”, where one surfer is regaling another with the tale of Nick (Richard Joseph Paul, “Oblivion” 1 and 2), an amiable dude who could clearly aspire to a lot, although he’s currently content with his lot in life. He catches the eye of Allie (Danielle von Zerneck, “My Science Project”), another serious sort who is otherwise tired of dating surfers. The trouble? They belong to different warring factions in the Southern California surfing community, “Vals” and “Lokes”. Keith Coogan (“Adventures in Babysitting”) plays Andy, Allies’ sweet natured, naive cousin from the sticks.

Overall, “Under the Boardwalk” is nothing special, but it entertains in capable enough fashion, thanks to director Fritz Kiersch (“Children of the Corn” ’84) and a talented crew including cinematographer Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”). The “Romeo and Juliet” inspired story allows for a fair amount of predictability, yet the movie remains appealing. It gets by thanks to its combination of comedy and drama, and its well chosen cast. The waves, of course, are out of sight, and the surfing sequences are very well executed. The score is by David Kitay (“Clueless”), and the soundtrack features an eclectic and catchy assortment of pop and rock, including an appearance by Surf Punks.

The young cast is quite engaging. Also putting in appearances are Roxana Zal (“River’s Edge”), Stuart Fratkin (“Teen Wolf Too”), Steve Monarque (‘Friday the 13th: The Series’), Hunter von Leer (“Halloween II” ’81), Brian Wimmer (‘China Beach’), Christopher Rydell (“Trauma”), Wallace Langham (‘CSI’), Elizabeth Kaitan (“Silent Night, Deadly Night 2”), Greta Blackburn (“Chained Heat”), Kurt Fuller (“No Holds Barred”), and Paul Carr (“The Bat People”). How nice it is to see the always welcome Dick Miller, in a small role as an official, and what a hoot to see Sonny Bono in a couple of scenes as an “ancient” surfer. Tracey Walter once again steals every scene he’s in, playing a philosophical beach bum who calls to mind his similar role in “Repo Man”. He even croons “Amazing Grace” at one point!

This probably wouldn’t have nearly as much resonance for viewers who aren’t part of the culture depicted here (certainly, there’s a ton of So Cal jargon tossed around), yet it does have some charm.

Seven out of 10.

I worked as an extra on this movie

…and frankly, I’m amazed at how highly it’s rated by the few IMDB users who have seen it. But then despite playing an unnamed surfer in the film, I don’t have much interest in surfing or surf movies.

The plot is very pedestrian, alternating between a surfing competition and light romance. Pretty bland fare. During filming (under the working title “Wipeout”) most of the crew knew they were creating bad cinema.

Note: the day shots were filmed in Seal Beach, and the night shots were filmed in Manhattan Beach, although they are supposed to be the same place in the film.

Wait…it gets better. (spoilers)

Is it really so hard to write a sports-themed adventure screenplay without the trite Romeo and Juliet cliché? Think of Under the Boardwalk as a surf-styled variation of the late 80s skate film, Thrashin’. (In fact, Brett Marx, who the curly blonde, Marone, was in Thrashin’). The film is told in flashback format as a surfer “from the future” narrates to his aquatic buddy the tale of the greatest surfer their beach has ever known. Much of the film concerns the conflict between some local surfers and some guys from the Valley (get a load of Stuart Fratkin’s stone cold mulletude) which gets considerably worse as Nick, the pacifist cutie from the Valley, falls in love with the sister of crude local surfer, Reef. Needless to say, you should expect a final surf-off-for-her-love-and-his-reputation finale.

Meanwhile, Nick has to make a decision about his future and whether he’ll accept a scholarship to attend Stanford or whether he’ll stay on the beach, get sponsored, and be what his friends may consider a true surfer-for-life.

The movie is the ultimate Hollywood perversion of surfers, their sport, and their culture, which is especially evident as the writers try to inject as much pseudo-surfing slang in the conversations between the Valleys and the locals (see the seen where Andy asks Reef’s sisters to translate the conversation between he and his friends). And this alone may be reason enough to turn the viewer off.

However, as the film continues, despite a lack of much substantive story development, the film does become more entertaining. And, aside from the terribly clichéd plot and even more ridiculous dialog, there are many things here that 80s fans might enjoy purely for the atmosphere and the somewhat disconnected situations that the characters become involved in. For one thing, it’s loaded with familiar b-movie 80s regulars like Kieth Coogan, Wally Ward, the gorgeous Chris Rydell, Marx, Fritkin, Tracey Walter (paying homage to his philosophical character of ‘Repo Man’), Dick Miller, and others. I particularly enjoyed the novelties of the party sequence (with a surfboard-styled bull ride that looked like a lot of fun and an excellent band with a guitar shaped from a skateboard!). I also liked Roxana Zal’s spunky character, Gitch, one of the surfers with the most impressive skills. And the little running gags throughout the film.

It is really the minor things that make Under the Boardwalk worth trying for you 80s fans out there.

Humane Movie Reviews

Great Concept, Horrible Execution

I watched Humane. I liked the idea. And the movie kept my interest. But I just couldn’t really believe it.

If D. O. C. S. did all that, (by “all that,” I mean details that would spoil the movie if I were to write them,) and any family knew about it, that information would spread like wildfire. It wouldn’t have been a big surprise to the family.

The end was cheesy AF. Not believable at all.

I disliked the politics of the film also. It would have been way more believable to have the World Health Organization doing all of it, rather than a single political party.

There are numerous other things that just didn’t add up in it also.

Buuuuut… it held my interest. And the CONCEPT of the film was very original and intriguing, which is way more than I can say for the other movies coming out nowadays. The movie was good, but it could have been great with just a bit more thought put into it.

It’s not bad

So I won’t go into a movie summary since IMDb already does a pretty good job of doing that. It is watchable, but kind of slow to get started. The acting is very average for all involved except for the two main character husband and wife…they of course are quite seasoned. The soundtrack, yea that is really lacking. And actually takes away from many scenes while always playing softly in the background. But where this film is actually quite strong is the cinematography. Whoever the cinematographer was for the movie knew his business. Not a single shakey-cam anywhere. They set up the scenes and and shots it all really well. That is something so new. Typically it is annoying shakey-cam and high school level film class shots. So it’s worth a watch.

nice enough idea but can’t carry the whole movie

The concept of this movie is pretty good, government needs to reduce population so pays people to be euthanised. Rich guy invites family round to tell them he’s enlisted to do this. All kinda makes sense and can go along with the general idea.

The rest of the movie makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, the company that come and do it, the behaviour of the family, every action, further development of the original concept, decisions of everyone involved, nothing works. There is that single original concept, and thats it.

But actually that single thing was kinda enough to keep watching and see how it plays out, to its inevitable dissatisfying ending.

Nice idea. Ok to watch, could have been waaay better in every single way.

Blackout Movie Reviews

Drama with horror elements.

As far as werewolf movies are concerned this is a bit of a disappointment. While I appreciate the focus on the human element, and the suffering of the protagonist, there was really no heart-pounding thrills or werewolf horror that the viewer is expecting to see. I understand that there was little budget for the film, but the horror was minimal compared to what the poster and trailer leads you to believe. I enjoyed the use of art throughout the film, and Alex Hurt’s performance was very good. The rest of the cast was a bit subdued in their performances, and many of the sociopolitical themes seemed unnecessary for the general story. Larry Fessenden is a very talented actor and filmmaker, and will always keep an eye on his projects. I know he’s been focusing on the humanity of the “monsters” in his films lately (Deranged being another), but I hope he remembers to keep them horrific in a classical sense as well.

A message to Larry Fessenden

Dear sir: You have put out in the unwelcoming harshness of commercialization a movie that combines psychosocial realism with fantasy. Your main support has been a lore of werewolf movies that goes back to Henry Hull in London and the by now easily recognizable frame of Sundance independence from Hollywood. The outcome? A stark drama about a young fellow who reassesses his life as a misfit. Here and there, werewolf attacks. A sort of chocolate chip cookie, BLACKOUT with the wandering structures of so many pictures in the same genre creates a drama with horrific elements that could have been a good horror movie; e.g. The wolfman causes a massacre . Next scene: a lengthy talk between his love interest and her boyfriend in her kitchen. Tension and suspense mysteriously vanished.

On the plus side: technically speaking, Fessenden directs better than in his previous works.

Cast: The absolute protagonist of BLACKOUT is Alex Hurt, son of the great William Hurt and his spitting image. The role is demanding and he lives up to it. The supporting team includes veterans like Barbara Crampton, Marshall Bell and James LeGros, whom fans of the eighities’ fantasy/horror will enjoy spotting and naming.

Not a greatly original addition to the lycanthropic subgenre (“The Cursed” for one is better) but a pretty watchable movie.

A watchable at best but decidedly disappointing overall werewolf effort

After a series of strange animal attacks, the life of a small town gets turned upside down when they believe the culprit of the attacks to be an immigrant that fits the mold of their ideal target not realizing the real target is a struggling painter trying to rescue his family’s reputation.

Overall, this was a pretty enjoyable effort with a lot to like about it. One of the better features here is a strong and immersive storyline that brings about the lives of the people within the small town. The central setup of this one revolving around the work of the artist trying to not blow up at everything the residents say about him while they go about their own lives working on illicit property deals or personal squabbles that keep them at each others’ throats. That this all feels remarkably well done for the kind of small-town atmosphere that’s being attempted here that comes out in full force after the attacks start occurring which signals the film’s shift into a full-on political commentary on the nature of mob mentality and small-town-justice taking over their lives. That provides this one with a strong slew of creature attacks that come off rather nicely. The initial attack with the figure’s point-of-view approaching an amorous couple and attacking them which is told from that vantage point the entire time is a standout sequence making for a highly effective opening. A later attack where the victim transforms in their car and runs rampant on a few eyewitnesses to the crash that transformation caused ends up leaving a nice trail of carnage once it’s all over while another solid sequence of his recounting the backstory of his transformation offers a bit more to like. The frantic finale, featuring the full-on attacks in the neighbors’ house or the final assault in the police station where everything gets put into the open for everyone, manages to give this a lot to like. There are some rather big flaws here that hold this one down. One of the biggest issues with the film is a decidedly overlong focus on the lives and nature of the townspeople here leaving this one with only a few pieces of creature action. Going on and on about the lives of the residents to build up an incredibly detailed part of their apathy and prejudice towards others leaves the film without much in the action here as the dragged-out pacing leads to a decidedly overlong running time filled with talky exposition sequences. The ideas are perfectly sound and really don’t have much wrong here with the sociopolitical messaging apparent within them but that doesn’t help the muted amount of creature action even if all of this wasn’t inherently tiresome and cliched being utilized frequently over the years. The other problem with this one is a decidedly unfocused and unclear tone that leaves this one quite scattered and chaotic. The film’s introduction to the town occurs in such rapid succession info-dumping nearly an entire plot on its own regarding who he is and why he’s in town, the residents and their connection to him and his father, the relationships he has with the ostracized locals who are trying to get by without being the subject of racial oppression for their supposed involvement in the attacks and much more in the span of minutes. That this is all serious before handling a lot of the interactions here with a type of low-key humor that misses the mark completely with the scattered focus here. These issues really end up bringing this one down the most.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Graphic Violence, Brief Nudity, and an obscured sex scene.

The Bounce Back Movie Reviews

Cute but not more

I love romantic comedies but this one was really neutral for me. It was fun but not anything else. We have a good scenario here which I think wasn’t really exploited. There wasn’t any alchemy between the characters, I couldn’t feel it. There wasn’t the seduction, the spicyness of a fresh relationship so, it was a little bit boring.

What misses here is movement. Something noticeable. And also, some advices about the bounce back book that could’ve been really enjoyable as in the movie “Think like a man”.

So my final opinion is : this is a good movie to enjoy during a sunday evening but don’t wait to be in love with the movie,

lazy, but pleasant romantic fare

I was wrong. When I included “The Bounce Back” (PG-13, 1:44) in the “Movie Fan Community” Facebook Page’s “Wait for It Wednesday” post with the weekend’s other nationwide releases, I referred to this film as a “romantic comedy-drama”. It’s not very accurate to imply that it’s a rom-com. It’s really more of a drama, without much comedy in it. I was also wrong in our “Throwback Thursday” post in which I related this movie to a “Retro Reel Review” of “Ride Along”, referring to “The Bounce Back” as having a “mostly African-American cast”. Actually, this cast is very ethnically diverse and, more importantly, the film almost completely ignores race and racial differences. Very refreshing for a bi-racial romance! Shemar Moore plays Matthew Taylor, a self-help relationship guru who has written the book of the film’s title. He’s confident, charismatic and, as one character says, “He’s gorgeous”. As the movie opens, with Terry Twist (Bill Bellamy), Matthew’s agent and best friend at his side, he is busy promoting his book on local TV talk shows and conducting seminars in which he explains the principles in his book to rooms full of lovelorn women. He advises the women that the best way to get past heartache is to pretend the past doesn’t exist, identify the future they want for themselves and focus on their goals.

It’s a message that clinical psychologist Kristin Peralta (Nadine Velazquez) thinks is naïve and uninformed – and she isn’t shy about sharing her opinions. When her girlfriends (Megan Stevenson and Robinne Lee) take her on a weekend getaway that ends up involving attendance at one of Matthew’s seminars, she tells him exactly what she thinks of him – in public. This leads to a joint talk show appearance which makes for great TV and leads to other offers for them to appear together. As the two of them spend more time together, since this IS a romance, they develop feelings for each other.

But both Matthew and Kristin bring their emotional baggage on their travels – and into their relationship. Matthew wrote his book as a way to get past his divorce, but it’s obvious that he may not have moved on as completely as he thinks he has. His frequent visits with his daughter, Aleya (Nadja Alaya), keep him grounded, but he’s still romantically closed-off. Likewise, Kristin has had her heart broken, but she has been a little less successful at moving on with her life as Matthew has. Meanwhile, Terry has to deal with his dislike for Kristin, as he develops a love-hate relationship with a TV producer.

“The Bounce Back” is a typical romance in some ways, and very different in others. Its story is uninspired and will remind Movie Fans of similar (and better) movies like “The Perfect Match” (2016), “The Ugly Truth” (2009) and “You’ve Got Mail” (1998). The script, by Victor Teran, Staci Robinson and Youssef Delara (who also directs), is mostly dull and lifeless and settles for characters who are as much cardboard cut-outs as those of Matthew, which appear in bookstores throughout the film. Delara’s direction is lazy, which is especially apparent during the obligatory romantic montage which isn’t much more than Matthew randomly pointing at stuff in Times Square. There’s also a lack of realism in the casting which seems like simply a Parade of the Pretty People. Where the film does deserve credit is during its third act which is pleasingly romantic – and extra credit for its post-racial approach to relationships. Also, the performances of Bellamy and Alaya are very good. But those things aren’t quite enough to warrant my recommendation. If you see this film and are disappointed, don’t worry, you’ll bounce back. If you see it and decide I’m wrong about my criticisms, that’s okay. I know how to bounce back too. (Bounce back too – NOT Bounce Back Two. I don’t want to give producers any ideas.) “C+”

Man, I got absolutely nothing from this move.

Shemar Moore and Nadine Velazquez are two of the hottest people you could possibly put on camera, And yet The Bounce Back was sooooo flat. So flat it’s actually impressive how flat and lifeless these two are on screen.

Just proof that looking good is not enough to be a tolerable actor. I mean Shemar Moore has Been doing this for years right? I’m realizing I’ve never actually seen him in anything else or I could have been warned. I seen Nadine Velazquez in things like My Name is Earl and Real House Husbands of Hollywood. Both I love and both I love her in, cause she did good on both shows…. as a supporting actor. I’m guessing she’s not ready yet to co-support a film. And I’ve seen Bill Bellamy at his prime when he was able to hold down his own flick (How to be a Player) so very surprise how his comedy bounce off of me like I was bulletproof.

The movie was not awful but it was not good, it was flat very flat like a soda without the fizzle. Everything was lined up correctly, but somehow nothing sizzles.

It’s something to catch if you have nothing else, but it does not leave any after flavor.

Deadheads Movie Reviews

Average comedy, not good, but not too bad

I had to write a short review of this. Some of the top reviews of this movie is obviously made by someone affiliated with the movie in some way.

The movie is mildly entertaining. The plot is the main guy that wants to declare his love for his old girlfriend. The side-story is about an old guy who wants to spread his dead wife’s ashes by some shore or other. The side-plot isn’t executed very successfully. The acting is OK, although the side-kick gets to be annoying.

I was hoping for a few laughs, but I didn’t laugh once in the course of this movie. It was a bit funny at times. So I smiled, and that’s it.

If you have nothing else to do, or if you REALLY like zombie-themed movies by all means see it. You’re not gonna walk away very satisfied though.

I managed to sit though it’s entirety. I’m starting to think that I should have spent it sleeping instead.

Goodnight!

I had a few laughs

I can understand that people really liked this zombedy. But it is just a few weeks ago that I saw two other US comedies namely, Vampires Su*k and Tucker and Dale vs Evil. It was very simple, Vampire Su*k was indeed a big su*k but Tucker was hilarious. Why, because it had stupid situations and misunderstandings. People who knew me know that I’m not into Us comedies except a few like Tucker. Sadly Deadheads failed for me.

I had a few laughs, for example the gym with the zombie they called Cheese. that was funny, but ripping off an arm and putting it back on place to move further isn’t funny anymore. On the other hand there are a few good things too, I was looking forward for McDinkle (Benjamin Webster). He’s the kind of guy you all know, I had a few laughs with him but the main characters weren’t convincing. It isn’t all comedy, in fact, it’s a love story between a guy being killed and turned into a zombie going to find his love. But they never got into stupid situations. On the gory part there is more to see, there are a few good things to see like the decapitation.

My mouth moved a few times but not enough to call it great. With Tucker for example I was laughing out loud. I’m sure that it will have his fans but this time I didn’t dig it, sorry.

Gore 2/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 2/5 Story 2/5 Comedy 2/5

Somewhat tolerable, for a low budget zombie movie

The plot: two zombies go on a road-trip and try to find one’s ex-girlfriend to profess his love.

This is a pretty stupid ripoff of Shaun of the Dead, but, unfortunately for me, I’ve seen much worse. As far as low budget, independent zombie movies go, this is actually one of the more tolerable entries. That’s not saying much when your competition is The Dead Hate The Living and Dance of the Dead. Still, there were appealing aspects to it, and it had some degree of charm, I guess. I’m a bit tired of self-aware hipster nerds in zombie comedies, though. Especially when there’s a romantic subplot.

If you like movies that are basically just a couple of goofy nerds spouting off pop culture references and movie quotes, then I’m sure you’ll find this amusing. Otherwise, I’d advise that you skip it. Instead, just watch Shaun of the Dead again.

All You Need Is Death Movie Reviews

A solid concept but wholly misses the mark in every other regard

Learning of a potentially intriguing story, a pair of documentarians committed to recording long-forgotten folk songs learn of a potentially long-forgotten song in the Irish countryside and set out to capture it against the wishes of the locals, unleashing a bizarre curse that envelops them both.

This was a rather problematic genre effort. Most of the film’s positive points stem from the central setup and atmospheric touches running throughout here which provide a genuinely engrossing sense of mystery. The main idea of relying on the power of traditional and even sometimes generaltional customs, in this case regarding the nature of the mythic song in question, offers the kind of fascinating insight into the past that this one relies quite heavily on. With the majority of the middle half devoted to how this plays out regarding how to honor the traditions of the past that has used a specific medium over time, this kind of corruption makes for an intriguing setup looking at the way it unfolds involving the king of unraveling curse thtat takes place. That allows for some rather chilling scenarios to take place here as a result with the way it all comes to include various gruesome attacks and cofrontations to let the curse play out. Outside of this, though, there’s just not much going on here to remain interesting. Far too much of the film is reliant on the idea of the curse coming to fruition but it’s never given much of any care of orinterst in what that means or why they’re interested in getting the song recorded. The whole concept is so wacky and bizarre that there’s no real grounded form in play here to make things have an emotional attachment to it so that comes off rather flimsy and awkward, especially as this one goes along with the aspects of the curse as that doesn’t get explored in the slightest so it all makes for a confusing time. When it’s not concerned with the aspects of the curse, it’s just flat-out dull as very little happens so the pacing here is completely stiffened to the point of plodding blandly along to where it’s nearly impossible to care about the story going forward. There’s so little life or energy in what’s going on that it just doesn’t register anything but boredom, all of which hold this down overall.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Violence.

Gloriously unhinged folk horror you will hear before you see.

Minor Spoilers Ahead.

I was lucky enough to attend an early screening of Paul Duane’s first horror feature ‘All You Need Is Death’. The plot follows Anna and Aleks as they navigate the unsavory underbelly of black-market traditional folk music archivists. And this is about as much sense as the plot ever makes on first viewing. It is gloriously unhinged, but once you buy into this batty premise you learn that there are shadowy figures willing to pay top-dollar for ancient songs or variations thereof. Anna and Aleks are just the duo to record these songs on tape. In their hunt they hear of a woman who might have a song from the olden days that no one has ever heard before – so they go seeking her out. The song contains more than just lyrics, melody or story. As Aleks and Anna learn soon enough.

This film (that song sequence) will change the way and why of how you listen to music. An extraordinary accomplishment from such a small production – and I couldn’t make such a bold claim if this film did not have the musical chops to back up its wild thesis. Let me assure you it does. Ian Lynch’s soundtrack is outstanding – an atmosphere seeped in menace and dread. A shout out too to Barry Gleeson & Simone Collins (amongst others) for their brilliant, “in the old way”, sean-nós performances. I often found myself relishing the prospect of the next terrifically effective song more than I did the next scare. Up to a point that is – because as we approached the climax the horror builds and builds to fulfil its dreadful, demented promise. And brilliantly so.

A final note. There is a lot going on here. On one viewing I struggled to make recognize some of the foreshadowing as it was presented, or guess at some of the hints and sub-texts (though I was totally enthralled). But now a few days after seeing the film, I think what Duane has cleverly done is shroud the meanings with an opaque veil of storytelling intricacies and layered meanings that will keep Giallo horror, and folk film aficionados discussing for years.

It is folly to predict cult status for a film, as you can never guess what will capture a niche zeitgeist – but I can promise you this: There will be a subset of film fans who will watch this film again, and again, and again. I certainly will – the soundtrack alone will compel me.

Kudos to the entire team. “All You Need Is Death” is an achievement that won’t go unnoticed.

I wanted to love this one, but its not possible

Im a fan of foreign horror because they usually offer fresh takes. This movie is no exception and the story starts off interesting and engaging. We don’t know who is who or what is afoot.

When the story gradually unfolds, and a curse is revealed, I sought to identify the rules of the curse and the entity who created it.

This revelation never comes, the curse is generic-, something about unhealthy love and betrayal passed down between women by pre-Irish song.

There is a story here. But the resolution is convoluted and unsatisfying. It seems like a cosmic element is at work, but this is not clear or horrifying.

In the end it feels like a bunch of things were thrown into the mix of a modern day fable.

solid thriller with giallo undertones

A most misleading title English for a very fine film, which may be why it has become so neglected. Fernando Rey is great as the ageing judge reflecting upon his career as someone keen to make use of the death penalty wherever he saw necessary. Some of this seems to be coming back to haunt him and we see something of these terrible murders (hence the title, but still misleading, this is no stalk and slash). Instead we have a gripping tale with many twists and turns and if we see little gore or skin for that matter, there are other compensations. Not least the lovely Marisa Mell who puts in a sterling performance matching that of the great man himself. Good solid thriller with giallo undertones and a very good dub plus fine cinematography. Well worth catching if you can.

Voodoo Rey

It’s not very violent, there’s just a bit of blood, and there’s a swimming pool but no baths in this interesting giallo from the director of The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue.

Fernando Rey is a nervous, OCD-afflicted Judge on holiday with his young wife Marissa Mell, who is trying her hardest to put up with all his quirks. Both have problems. Fernando discovers that a money order has been sent to a man he condemned to death three years after his execution, and this money seems to have been sent by the dead man himself. This not only prompts some flashbacks, but also leads him to discover that a family has been brutally murdered in the exact same way the executed man carried out his initial attacks.

Marissa Mell’s problems is that her ex-boyfriend has reappeared on the scene and Fernando’s behaviour isn’t exactly helping her stay faithful, so while he’s off trying to track down some copy-cat killer this ex of hers is giving her the eyeball, putting the moves on her, but is he legit or is he up to something? When other crimes start to be recreated, things get a bit desperate for Fernando.

If you’ve watched several hundred of these films already you may find that this one is easy to solve, but when you’ve got Fernando Rey in the main role that’s okay, because he’s a fascinating actor to watch. Other than that, this is a bit of a lightweight giallo without the cheese or over the top madness we’ve come to expect. Not a bad film though.

Well made and well acted suspense/murder mystery

The English language title – “Violent Blood Bath” – is an unfortunate misnomer. It gives the impression that this as a splatter movie and yet the entire amount of blood shown in this movie was less than 1/2 bottle of Max Factor #5. The Italian title – “The Private Life of a Public Prosecutor” – is more descriptive but less grabbing.

This is a competently made movie: well acted by both Fernando Rey and Marisa Mell, a dark beauty. It is dubbed so well that it is hardly noticeable. It is beautifully photographed, for the most part, in some interesting, and very scenic, locations.

It has enough suspense, although you may guess who the real killer is before the actual denouement . Not a great movie; it is definitely above average and well worth a look.

Gamera vs. Jiger Movie Reviews

Enjoyable Japanese giant monster outing

Vicious behemoth beast Jiger attacks Japan during an annual science fair. It’s up to Gamera to stop the foul fiend. However, Jiger has injected the heroic flying prehistoric turtle with its parasitic offspring. Can two little boys save Gamera in time? Director Noriaki Yuasa, working from a fairly dark and twisted script by Fumi Takahashi, relates the entertaining story at a constant brisk pace, maintains a generally serious tone throughout, and stages the fierce and lengthy monster fight set pieces with a reasonable amount of skill and flair. Moreover, there are also pleasing moments of large scale mass destruction with Jiger demolishing a major city and surprisingly harsh bits of violence (Jiger cripples Gamera by shooting needles into all of his limbs and turns people into skeletons). The Expo Center in Osaka makes for a neat, novel, and interesting setting. The shoddy (far from) special effects possess a certain endearingly shoddy charm. Tsutomu Takatuma and Kelly Varis are solid and likable as the two little boys who help Gamera. Akira Kitazaki’s vibrant widescreen cinematography and Shunsuke Kikuchi’s bouncy score are both up to speed. Plus you gotta love Gamera’s incredibly cute’n’catchy theme song. A fun creature feature.

You Know…For Kids

This is a children’s movie. Is it a great children’s movie? No.

But, it is an enjoyable children’s movie. Sure Gamera looks like he was constructed at the last second out of an old shopping bag; and, Monster X looks like something that you pulled out of a Salvation Army drop-box. But, this movie has children as the main characters, doing the bulk of the heroics and making the bulk of the sound decisions…

There are a tremendous number of plot-holes in this movie; but, if you’ve got children, and a little patience, you can enjoy ninety minutes of pig-headed adults, brave children and flying turtles…

Also, there is a certain resemblance to the science fiction novel Blameless in Abaddon…anyone else notice?…

You’re inside the body of a flatulent turtle. Of course there’s a funny smell.

This Gamera entry takes awhile to get into, but once the plot gets underway, it’s a heck of a lot of fun. When a strange monster attacks the Earth and start sinking ships, Gamera comes to the rescue, but this monster is one step ahead of him. It shoots needles into Gamera’s body which creates a growing larvae inside him which then grows like a monster in the “Aliens” movies. Scientists create a little submarine in which a Japanese and Caucasian boy travel into Gamera’s body to locate the larvae and kill it so Gamera can become well take care of the other monster.

With a unique plot like this and plenty of unintentional humor, this ends up being an enjoyable entry in the “Gamera” series. The dubbed English version has voices that are either extremely shrill (the little American girl) or amusingly against type for the character that they are used for. The funniest sequence of course is the visit into Gamera’s body, and these two boys are certainly heroic. The bouncy score is an added plus. It’s comic book fun at its most thrilling level. You know that things are going to end happily, but with silly adventures like this, half the fun is getting to that conclusion.

Ambush at Cimarron Pass Movie Reviews

“A Man’s Gotta Do A Lot Things He Doesn’t Bargain For.”

Director Jodie Copelan’s “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” qualifies as an entertaining but predictable 73-minute, black & white, B-movie, military western about the cavalry versus Apaches, with one noteworthy distinction—a young, clean-shaven, pre-“Rawhide” Clint Eastwood receives third billing. The title classifies “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” as a landscape western, and it foreshadows where the climactic action will transpire. Mind you, this is a characteristic of many westerns because the terrain acts as an arena for our heroes to prove their mettle. The Richard G. Taylor & John K. Butler screenplay based on a story by Robert A. Reeds & Robert E. Woods yields several quotable lines about masculinity. The central theme here is bargains. Survival depends on bargains. Copelan at the helm of his first and only film explores the usual themes of man versus man, man versus society, man versus his environment, and the issue of apocalyptic armaments. Clearly, the Winchester repeating rifles at the heart of this drama serve as metaphors for atomic weapons. Copelan emphasizes their role early on by presenting them in the first close-ups so that we cannot overlook them. The durable and dependable Scott Brady must prevent these rifles from landing in Apache hands. The Apaches are the equivalent here for the Soviets.

Twentieth Century Fox released this modest 1958 oater through its subsidiary company Regal Films, and theatres originally projected “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” in a widescreen process called Regalscope. Unfortunately, the Western Channel version is full frame, but you can imagine what the extent of the composition. “Showdown at Boot Hill” lenser John M. Nickolaus Jr.’s photography adds suspense to the action. He composes his shots so that the Indians appear on the periphery, frames shots through the arch on a warrior’s legs so that they seem to dominate the terrain. All-in-all, “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” is a polished looking western. Copelan helmed a handful of television shows, but spent most of his/her (?) time as an editor on about 40 movies and television series. Clint Eastwood has a low opinion about his first western. He has been quoted as calling it “probably the lousiest Western ever made.” Actually, “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” surpasses many lesser frontier army westerns and its armaments plot—one of the genre’s integral conventions—assumes greater significance in light of the Cold War era release date and the paranoia about Armageddon.

Sergeant Matt Blake (Scott Brady of “Johnny Guitar”) of the Seventh Cavalry and the four surviving troopers of his patrol are escorting a civilian prisoner, Corbin (Baynes Barron of “Fireball 500”), back to Fort Waverly to stand trial for selling repeating rifles to the Apaches. We learn later that Corbin struck a deal to sell the Indians 36 repeating rifles. Blake describes the magnitude of the threat that these rifles pose to the cavalry. “These new guns have the firepower of another company and fire 15 rounds without a reload.” Our beleaguered cavalry heroes ride into an ambush less than five minutes into the action. They discover, however, the Apaches aren’t trying to dry-gulch them. Instead, a band of former Confederate soldiers led by ex-Colonel Sam Prescott (Frank Grestle of “Crossroads”) are shooting at them initially until they agree to a truce and Sgt. Blake pow-wows with them. Although two years have passed since the end of the American Civil War, old wounds don’t heal as quickly. Prescott’s second-in-command, Keith Williams (Clint Eastwood of “Star in the Dust”) hates Blake from the start and accuses him of lying. “All Yankees are liars,” Keith snarls with considerable animosity. The Georgia native bears a grudge against the Yankees because his family has suffered the wrath of General Sherman in the South.

Prescott explains that Apaches masquerading as troopers jumped them and stole their whole herd of cattle. Blake realizes that the Indians must have gotten their uniforms from his slain troopers. “A man has to take a lot of things he doesn’t bargain for, Prescott,” Blake observes and then adds, “Maybe that’s what makes him a man.” Prescott points out that they are heading for Waverly, too. No sooner do the Southerners and the cavalrymen form an uneasy alliance than two Apache horsemen appear and leave a bound woman sprawled in open ground not far from them. Our heroes rush to Teresa Santos (Margia Dean of “FBI Girl”) and everybody is surprised when the Indians steal their horses and take Cobb (Desmond Slattery), one of the ex-Confederates, as a hostage. The treacherous redskins used Teresa as a decoy so that they could distract our heroes. Teresa explains that she is from the Santos Ranch. It seems that marauding Apaches burned it and killed her brother, sister, and father. The Apaches offer our heroes a bargain: Cobb in exchange for the rifles. Blake categorically refuses to negotiate. The Indians never let up on our heroes and whittle their numbers.

Naturally, tempers flare among the heroes over the value of the guns versus the former Confederates. “Getting riled up at each other ain’t the answer,” a conciliatory Prescott intervenes. “Let’s calm down and talk this out,” Eventually, Blake, Prescott, Keith, Teresa along with the troopers and Southerners have to strike out of foot with the 36 repeating rifles slung over their shoulders for a six to seven day march to Fort Waverly. Judge Stanfield (Irving Bacon of “Fort Apache”) refuses to tote any guns. Eventually, Keith comes to his senses and sheds his antipathy toward Yankees in general and Sgt. Blake in particular. The last line that Keith utters summarizes the value of “Ambush at Cimarron Pass” in the career of Clint Eastwood. Says Keith, “Sometimes you have to lose before you can win.” Another memorable line occurs when Private Lasky points out to Johnny Willows about their non-commissioned officer that: “A sergeant who isn’t rough on his men winds up burying most of them.” Clint Eastwood shouldn’t be too ashamed of this B-western. You know the budget was tight because nobody changes their clothes throughout the action.

Watchable story of former confederates and Yankees joining…

1st watched 9/14/2007, 6 out of 10(Dir-Jodie Copelan): Watchable story of former confederates and Yankees joining forces to thwart off some Apache’s trying to get some repeating rifles that a traitor had sold to them. This is a very simple story that is executed very well by all involved. The idea behind it is that the Civil war has just ended but there are still hard feelings between the sides. The Yankee(northern troops) are trying to transfer some rifles and a prisoner to a nearby fort but are intercepted by some southern-folk that they think are Apache’s dressed up like them(they had been fooled by the Apache’s earlier this way). The Apache’s then steal the whole combined troops horses and have to travel by foot six days the rest of the way. The conflict in the movie has to do with these two groups getting along while the Apache’s slowly figure out how to overcome them and get the rifles. There is eventually a showdown but by this time the hard work of reconciliation has been done and the fight with the Indians is kind of anti-climatic. Clint Eastwood, in an early role, plays a young hard-hearted southern man who eventually turns to help out the crew and does a good job, but’s its the story that keeps you interested. An abrupt end is the only real downside to the movie(which appeared to be mainly because the small film company ran out of money more than anything else), but this small film delivers otherwise and is enjoyable viewing.

Young Clint glints as a diamond in the rough

Let’s face it – the only real reason to catch this pedestrian oater is to get a glimpse of a 27 year old Clinton Eastwood. The future star is still coltish in his acting craft here, and he hasn’t fully developed his excellent timing and intensity as in “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” and “Dirty Harry”, but the B western does show why this film was a good reason that he pursue acting. His scenes with Margia Dean are the best in showing a charisma which would one day make him box office.

Made in 1958, Eastwood looks very youthful. He holds his own in scenes with a sturdy and sullen Scott Brady, and is somewhat confined by a script that has him cast as the young fool. But Eastwood does well with what he’s got, and exhibits a star quality as a young Hollywood actor.

Terror Is a Man Storyline

Synopsis for “Terror Is a Man” (video version is “Blood Creature.”)When a man (William Fitzgerald)(Richard Derr) washes ashore in a lifeboat, he is rescued by Dr. Charles Girard (Francis Lederer) who is working on crossing a man with an animal on an island off the coast of Peru. Walter Perrera (Oscar Keesee) comes in to see how he is and is asked by the doctor if he has seen anything. He says no but he has heard a strange cry in the night that has been heard before. Dr. Girard tells Fitzgerald that they have no radio to contact anyone and that no other survivors have been found. Tiago the boy (Peyton Keesee) brings the man his supper and is told to stay with him. Dr. Girard talks with his wife Frances (Greta Thyssen) outside. She wants to abandon their work and leave, but he insists that he has come too far to give it up. She says she heard the animal crying like a human and knows it escaped. He says he will deal with it tomorrow. As Frances prepares for bed, the creature (Flory Carlos)is seen watching her through the window. Outside, the creature attacks a man sitting by a fire and then a girl who approaches, who screams. This alerts people in the village, who rush out to discover what has happened. Next they are seen leaving in a mass exit. A woman, Selene (Lilia Duran) tries to stop them from leaving along with Tiago (her brother), but to no avail.Later, Tiago visits Fitzgerald, who is up and feeling better, having shaved and dressed. Tiago says no one lives on the island but the doctor and his crew, which leaves Fitzgerald surprised. Wandering around the house, Fitzgerald sees Selene in one of the rooms and says hello. He finds a staircase going down below and ends up outside. Walking around, he finds a deserted village, the remnants of a fire still smoldering. He sees two fresh graves in a small cemetery. As he is walking farther, he hears the creature’s footsteps crunching through the underbrush (the feet are seen). He steps out into a clearing where Dr. Girard, his wife and another man are working. He is cautioned about not stepping into a pit that has been dug and covered over. He is told there are three pits in the area. He is introduced to Frances, who says she is glad he is better. Dr. Girard tells him that meat has been put out for bait to catch an animal and they leave to go back.Back at the house, several toasts are made around a table. Walter eyes Selene as she serves drinks and then coffee. He rises to leave, saying that the animal should be caught soon. Fitzgerald tells Dr. Girard that at first he thought the doctor was a missionary. The doctor says the villagers left the night before because they are superstitious and fear an evil spirit. He explains that they misunderstand the experimental work that he is doing there.Outside that night, Fitzgerald tells Frances that the animal has apparently been caught. She tells him she would like to leave the island and asks for his help. At that moment someone comes, carrying a torch. They go back to the house and Frances goes to her room, refusing to open to her husband. Fitzgerald, intending to talk to the doctor about his wife, is interrupted by Dr. Girard, who tells him how important his work is here and that he came to the secluded island so he would not be bothered. Fitzgerald says he will turn in for the night and goes to his room.Hearing noises outside his window, Fitzgerald investigates. He goes downstairs where he sees the doctor with someone on a gurney covered by a sheet. Frances is assisting. He tells her the operation will not be tonight. When there is a power fluctuation, he sends his wife to see about it. Fitzgerald hides so they will not see him. She tells her husband that she will not be able to help him anymore tonight. He tells her to send for Walter. Fitzgerald has to hide again when the doctor wheels the patient out and into an adjoining room. As Fitzgerald stands near the gurney, the patient (creature) reaches out to grab him but he is just out of reach. Frances closes and locks the cell door, explaining to the patient “I’m sorry.” Later that night, Fitzgerald hears someone outside his door. Frances goes to his room, but changes her mind and returns to her own room. The next day Fitzgerald sees Frances sunning herself by the shore and approaches to talk. He asks about Tiago’s mother and she confirms that her name was Alicia and that she was the first victim of the animal. She tells him how disillusioned she has become in the two years since they came here. She asks for his help and he promises it. Lying down beside her, they kiss. This is observed by Walter.Back at the house, Walter, Fitzgerald and Frances talk as the men have a drink. Frances goes to her room and a drunken Walter talks to Fitzgerald about life on the island. Walter retires to his room as the rain begins. Fitzgerald sees an open door and enters, looking around. It is the doctor’s office. On his desk are books and drawings showing transformations between animals and man. At this point the doctor enters and begins talking about his work. Fitzgerald shows an interest and is invited to attend surgery the next day. As he is going to his room, he is cautioned by Dr. Girard to not take Frances’ claims of fear too seriously. That night the rain draws Frances outside to watch. Selene is seen meeting with her lover, one of the men who assists the doctor. Fitzgerald comes out and makes conversation with Frances. Meanwhile, the doctor with his patient examines x-rays of the skull. Fitzgerald retires to his room but leaves the door open. Frances enters and he closes the door. They embrace and kiss. The doctor calms the patient who cries out in pain.Next morning at breakfast table, Tiago gives Fitzgerald a good luck charm. Frances comes in and Fitzgerald tries to talk to her about what happened between them last night. She says not now. The doctor comes in and says that Fitzgerald will be assisting him in surgery and that Frances won’t be needed. He asks for Walter, whom Fitzgerald tells him is sleeping one off. They go downstairs and the doctor gives the patient a shot. They help it onto the gurney and enter the operating room. As the doctor scrubs up, he tells Fitzgerald to secure the hand straps on the patient. Fitzgerald does so, noticing cat-like whiskers protruding from the bandaged head of the patient. Walter enters and is told to scrub up. Surgery begins as another shot is given the patient. As the surgeon begins his incision a bell rings (this is a gimmick the movie promises when a shocking scene is to begin) After surgery is complete, the doctor is seen stitching up the patient. Fitzgerald goes upstairs and Tiago asks if he still has the good luck charm. He pulls it out and shows it to him. Tiago says he will need it. Fitzgerald heads upstairs and sees Frances coming out of her room dressed for surgery. He tries to talk to her but she brushes him off, saying she must help her husband clean up. Entering the operating room, she offers to clean up so he can leave. The doctor tells Walter that Mrs. Girard will clean up and leaves. Walter approaches Frances, telling her he is interested in helping her escape the island, hinting that he saw her and Fitzgerald on the beach. He tells her Fitzgerald will not help her because he is helping her husband. He comes on to her despite her protests and there is a struggle. The patient reacts when Frances is attacked (knowing Frances has been sympathetic to it). Walter sees the patient struggling and straps it down. Frances tells Walter to never speak to her again and leaves. An angry Walter grabs a stick and beats the patient.Fitzgerald is walking around outside and comes upon Selene, who asks him if he is going to help Mrs. Girard leave. She tells him that she and her brother Tiago want to leave with them. When he asks why they don’t like it there, she tells him there is only death there now. He notices a bruise on her arm and asks who did that to her. She refuses to say, denying that her boyfriend did it. At this point she runs away.Dr. Girard appears on the porch and says he wants to show something to Fitzgerald. They go into his office and he shows drawings of the creature from a black panther to a human form. Fitzgerald tells him there are laws against what he is doing, but Dr. Girard is interested in creating a new species of man who is not hung up like all men before him. He tells him nothing will stop him from continuing his work.In the operating room, the doctor raises the gurney to a standing position. He begins speaking to the patient, trying to get him to say the word “man.” After a few tries, the patient seems to speak a word. When Walter enters the room, the patient grows agitated and the doctor gets a syringe. He tells the two men to go upstairs. Trying to calm his patient, he talks to it. The patient goes crazy, smashing all the equipment and the surgical light. Upstairs Fitzgerald calls for Tiago to bring a torch, which he lights. Walter takes the torch and goes into the operating room. In the struggle he sets the patient’s bandages on fire. Screaming, the patient runs in terror and falls to the ground. The doctor and his wife cover it with a blanket to extinguish the flames. While the doctor tries to attend to the patient, Walter tells Frances that she is crazy as her husband is. He becomes agitated and says he will have to do something before they are all killed. Fitzgerald says what will he do, get drunk? Walter is insulted and smarts off, prompting Fitzgerald to punch him. Falling down, Walter gets up and produces a gun from a drawer and points it at him. Don’t be stupid, Fitzgerald tells him. He says he is not stupid but he will deal with Fitzgerald later. First he is going downstairs. In the operating room, the doctor begins removing more of the bandages. Breaking loose, the creature cuts the power and attacks. Upstairs, Fitzgerald calls for candles. Frances says she has some in her room. In the darkness she has trouble finding them. She finds one and they try to light it in the dark unsuccessfully. She cries and he tries to comfort her, telling her they will escape tomorrow. As he pledges his love, she says she loved her husband for many years and can’t deal with failure. She tells him to leave her alone and goes out into the hall. At this point the creature is seen and Frances screams and goes back into her room. The creature goes down the hall as lightning and thunder are striking outside. Tiago comes in as Frances and Fitzgerald come out into the hall. The doctor emerges from downstairs and tells them Walter is dead. He instructs Tiago to get flashlights and equipment to search for the creature. Girard insists that Fitzgerald help him capture the creature before he gets far. They get the equipment and go out.Frances tells Tiago to help secure doors and windows. Looking out a window, Tiago sees the creature outside. He goes out to look for it. Selene comes out and begins calling for Tiago. The creature approaches her and puts its paw/hand on her mouth. Frances closes her window and comes out to call for Tiago and Selene. As she comes out on the porch, she sees the body of Selene on the ground. Fearful, she enters and closes the doors. Soon the creature appears and she locks herself in her room. The creature breaks down the door and comes in. Frances screams and the two men hear it from outside. They turn back for the house. Seeing Selene on the ground, Fitzgerald examines her and says she is dead. He picks her up and carries her inside. Dr. Girard says to search the rooms. Finding her room empty, he believes the creature has gone out the back way. As the men go back outside, the creature is seen carrying Frances. They follow and separate. Dr. Girard sees the creature carrying Frances and approaches as they come to a cliff side. Fitzgerald sees them and hurries. The doctor tries to talk to the creature, who cries pitifully. Scratching the doctor’s face, the creature picks him up and throws him off the cliff. Fitzgerald fires a shot at the creature, who stumbles off. Wandering along the shoreline, the wounded creature moans and is approached by Tiago who offers his hand. Fitzgerald and Frances run to the beach where Tiago is standing alone. Where is the boat, Fitzgerald asks. Tiago tells him it is gone. Fitzgerald tells Frances it will soon be daylight as they walk along the beach.

Terror Is a Man Movie Reviews

Good little thriller

This is a Philippine lensed remake of the HG Wells Island of Doctor Moreau. This is a good little film that has some thrills and chills but which doesn’t hold a candle to the best version of the tale, The Island of Lost Souls. The plot has a man coming to Blood Island (this is actually weirdly related to the later Blood Island films -such as Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood) where a mad doctor is turning animals into people. While not as large scale as Lost Souls, there isn’t a whole bestiary really just one guy, the film does have some nice beasties. I think on some level the film has survived because the film has a bell that rings to warn people of sensitive disposition that something terrible is about to happen. Personally I think it’s a dumb idea that kills some of the suspense, but at the same time you do remember the film because of the gimmick. Worth a look.

Surprisingly good for a movie that had a budget of $97.50.

“Terror is a Man” is a very, very low-budget film but despite this it’s still a pretty good version of the classic H.G. Wells story “The Island of Lost Souls”. So, despite being made in the Philippines, having a MOSTLY unknown cast and a relatively cheesy creature, the film was deftly made and featured a nice appearance by Francis Lederer as the mad doctor.

The film begins with a man in a lifeboat washing up on the shores of a mostly deserted island in the Pacific. He soon learns that only about a half dozen people live there and they all work for a weirdo doctor who is doing weird experiments. What, exactly, this experiment is doesn’t become apparent until later, when you learn the crazy guy is trying to ‘evolve’ creatures into human form. What this really means are 50 or more surgeries that cause excruciating pain for the poor creature–all in the name of ‘science’.

Unlike the original tale, there is only the one creature and there’s a romance tossed in to boot. But, good suspense, acting and a credible explanation for why you don’t see much of the creature all work to make a spooky and worthy horror film.

By the way, I did have one question that I thought of while watching the film. If the folks have been on this island for two years, how does the Doctor’s wife have a perm?!

Terror Is a Man was a fascinating Drive-In ’50s fare from the Philippines

Just discovered this Philippine(My parents’ native country)-made horror movie here on IMDb as linked from Hulu. Despite the bland romantic trappings between the triangle of Francis Lederer, Richard Derr, and the buxom blonde from Denmark named Greta Thyssen, this was a pretty effective chiller during the last 30 minutes as effectively visualized by Gerardo de Leon with I’m sure help from producer Eddie Romero. There’s also some nice work from the natives like Oscar Keesee as the villain, his son Peyton as the innocent boy, and stunning Lilia Duran as the other hired help. And then there’s the creature played by Flory Carlos who spends most of the movie wrapped in bandages. His mummy-like performance gets effective treatment due to the music by Ariston Avelino. May be most effective to maybe to those 12 and under who haven’t seen anything gory yet. Certainly the “buzzer” that warns of a 15-second “surgery” scene was nothing that shocked my senses! So on that note, Terror Is a Man is worth a look for fans of old-fashioned Drive-In fare.

Sweet Dreams Movie Reviews

Watches Like A Practice Run.

Where to start?

Let’s start with Bobby Lee floating round this film looking like a marshmallow that got lucky on the lip of a rejection bin. Meaning he looks like a marshmallow that has been rolling around the factory floor in dust, pubes & dirt for 50 years.

His acting is laughably bad; which is a blessing. And when he isn’t trying to act he’s just being Bobby Lee. Theo Von shows promise.

The film itself, is too, and and and, instead of, so but so. This means it fails to really engage. It’s just too choppy. To, next next next. At the very least throw in a few fade shots in. Make the transition smooth.

But the film is not terrible. It watches like a practice run. With a bit more skill the film could have been very good.

It’s absolutely lovely!

Man, this flick is getting too low ratings. It’s a really warm and believable hour and a half with mostly good acting. Never too much and never boring. I’d actually like it to be a bit longer, that’s how much I enjoyed it!

Knoxville does an excellent job and you can really feel the pains he’s going through every time he tears up about how he’s mistreated his 8 year old daughter. Other fun characters are played by Theo von and Bobby Lee, although Lee is probably the weakest link in the movie, yet he still manages to be quite entertaining. Honorable mentions are Mohammed Amer and Jay Mohr who deliver really solid characters. A feel good movie!

Heartfelt, honest, surprising.

I was looking for something light-hearted and entertaining to watch. Maybe with a few feels and some laughs. The trailer made me think of Major League but toned down and a little more staid. It was not that at all but am very glad of it.

I got a lot more. It turns out Johnny Knoxville can turn in a very good performance. Coupled with a great supporting cast that seemed to be directed almost as if ad-libbed. The scripting and end result is great.

Knoxville plays Morris, who we find staying at a rehabilitation house attempting to get his life back by way of coaching his fellow housemates in a softball competition. The comedy is balanced well with the serious side of addiction, with a group of diverse but relatable characters. The result is a far more realistic portrayal of recovery without becoming overly dark. I never once thought it was depressing but, through my own experiences, never felt the subject was treated with anything but respect and honesty.

This one surprised me. Not what I was expecting but am very glad I found it.
