Tyson Movie Reviews

Good, but not great and stolen by Great Scott and Winfield

This is a made-for-TV flick about Iron Mike. As people have already commented there are several memorable and incredible performances given here. Scott is, to my mind, one of, if not the greatest American actor who lived in the last century. Along with Jason Robards, Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Cagney, and today Kevin Spacey. (Yes, I said it, Kevin ranks right up there with the all-time champs. Don’t believe me? See the movie he did with Annette Benning and Chris Cooper, then watch the Kaizer Soze flick. Unfortunately it is late and titles are escaping me…..)

So Scott steals the movie cursing and arguing and screaming his lungs out. By the way, after his death, it was rumored that D’Amato had forced Iron Mike to perform oral sex on him when Mike was a young boy under Cus’s tutelage. True or not, it would certainly explain a lot….Paul Winfield as Don King is a great match. His performance is much more believable here than Ving Rhames’s would be several years later on in “King”. Tony LoBianco is good to as Jim Jacobs who for years managed Tyson. Jacobs incidentally was a jack-of-all-trades, winning the US Handball Championship for Men, having the greatest private collection of fight films ever collected, and being an expert on comic books. Talk about your Renaisannce guys. The only weak link is Michael Jai White. He doesn’t really capture the caged-animal intensity of Iron Mike during his glory years. Tyson incidentally, should really consider making a film about his own life with actors of his choosing. Overall a good effort by some extremely talented actors.

Let’s Not Feel Sorry For A Convicted Rapist

I’ll be totally honest and say when Tyson beat Trevor Berbick to become the youngest world heavyweight champion I was mesmerised by this boxer . Lightning hand speed , power and someone who livened up the rather staid and fractured heavyweight division that was being left behind in a golden age of boxing that featured Leonard , Hagler , Hearns .Perhaps the most sympathetic thing about him was his tale of why he took up boxing , of the older kids beating him up and learning how to fight to merely survive the human jungle of New York’s mean streets . This however turned out to be a fairy tale and the reality was Tyson learned boxing in a reform school where he was sent to having carried a series of street robberies and where he met Cus D’Amato who effectively adopted the thug . It was D’Amato who steered Tyson from crime . As well as being a mentor he was also something a spin doctor and the myth of ” poor unfortunate victim of bullying ” was just that – a myth but it makes for a nice story . After all a violent sociopath is no role model , especially and ironically in the world of boxing where an audience in general and an American audience in particular like their heroes to be good guys . When D’Amato died in 1985 not long before Tyson became world champion the only calming force in Tyson’s life was gone and the boxer was heading for the rocks . Before his loss to Buster Douglas there were stories of street brawls outside the ring and his fights inside the ring were often farcical . The division lacked depth and his victories were either against fighters who were past their sell by date like Larry Holmes or against opponents who’d go out of their way to merely last the distance like Bonecrusher Smith or against opponents who’d be in awe and freeze such as Frank Bruno or Carl Williams . All this was before he was convicted of rape of course

To be fair this HBO bio-pic doesn’t sugar coat the boxer as much as I remember . It does point out that Tyson the child was disturbingly street wise and was heavily involved in crime ” Forty convictions ? Not even Al Capone had forty convictions ! ” . It also makes a point that even in his teen years Tyson had a run in over a girl and that he contracted venereal disease . Not much of a role model is he ? but at least it doesn’t paint him as a victim – well until later . Enter Paul Winfield who gives an all too realistic performance as Don King , a man so greedy and exploitative that he’s a walking advert for Stalinism .Winfield has a lot of fun in the role and while you might say the performance is a little too obvious it’d be impossible to play King in a subtle manner as he’s one of the most flamboyant , larger than life

characters in the world today . He goes out of his way to grasp the milk cow of Tyson in his talons . This is where things start falling apart to a degree . King exploits Tyson when he’s at his most vulnerable but remember Tyson is a street smart thug who one would expect to know all about King . Heck I was a skinny Scottish teenager in the 1980s living on an obscure Island and I knew all about Don King so why not Tyson ? Total greed on Tyson’s part wouldn’t have everything to do with it ? No of course not . . It also insinuates that Tyson fell in love with the wrong woman – Robin Givens – and this contributed to his downfall . Well if you beat up your wife you can’t blame her for walking out on you . Interesting this domestic abuse seems to be played down . Oh don’t tell me she was just interested in Tyson’s money . None of us are privy to the marriage between Givens and Tyson but if she was after Tyson’s money wouldn’t she have signed a pre nuptial agreement ? The amount of negative press against Givens from this period was disgraceful and it’s not like Tyson had a glittering reputation where violence outside the ring was concerned .

Disgracefully when the rape case was done and dusted there were those commentators who were quite happy to fling more innuendo about the rape victim crying rape due to Tyson’s wealth etc . The bio-pic does seem to suggest that we’re supposed to make up our own mind if Tyson was guilty or not but the fact that a jury who sat in court all day everyday and listened to all the evidence from all sides found Tyson guilty of rape so there’s no ambiguity involved – Tyson is a rapist and to suggest otherwise is a disgrace to both the victim and the rule of law

Who ate my ice cream!

The movie “Tyson” chronicles Mike Tyson’s life as a 12 year old boy, with 38 arrests to his credit,in Brooklyn to the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. It was fame and fortune more then the mean streets of Bronsville Brooklyn that lead to Tyson’s downfall that eroded his talents in the ring and civility out of it. Tyson after being taken under the wings of “Trainer of Champions” Cus D’Amato who fine tuned his talents as a boxer as well has gave him, with Cus’s wife, a family passed away leaving Tyson alone and open to be exploited by wannabe shysters like boxing promoter Don King as well as gold diggers like his first wife Robin Givens and her Moma Ruth Roper. By the time they got through with Mike he not only ended up losing his title , “The Baddest Man on the Planet Earth”, as world heavyweight champion but most of his estimated hundreds of millions he won in the ring.

The knock-out punch that really did Tyson in was his conviction of raping 18 year old Miss African American contestant Desiree Washington whom many people who followed the trail feel Tyson was innocent of. We get to see a shy and at the same time out of control Mike Tyson turn his life around for the better with the help of his surrogate father Cus D’Amato who taught him to keep his aggressions in not out of the ring. It was Cus’ death that left Tyson open to all the troubles that was to haunt him all his professional and personal life. Becoming the youngest man to win the heavyweight crown at the age of 20 by knocking out Trevor Berbick in the 2nd round on November 22, 1986 in Las Vages Tyson was unstoppable in the ring successfully defending his crown nine times. That’s until he met journeyman boxer Buster Douglas in Tokyo Japan in early 1990. A 40 to 1 long-shot Duglas busted Tyson up for 9 rounds and in the 10th knocked him on queer street taking the title away from him. The fact that Tyson, who was drinking and partying instead of training for the fight, and his off the books manager Don King never took Douglas seriously was the main reason for his shocking defeat.

Just when Tyson was on his way to regain his lost heavyweight crown him becoming a judge in the Miss African American contest in Indiana ended up in a worst disaster then his loss to Douglas. Accused of rape by Miss Washington and standing trail it seemed that Tyson’s reputation more then the evidence, that everyone felt was flimsy, that convicted him. Now in the spring of 1995 a convicted rapist and registered sex offender Tyson is given a second or is it third chance to regain his champion belt is where the movie ends.

The film Tyson to its credit shows Mike Tyson as a both troubled youth and man who’s life suffered mostly from those who exploited his talents and money for their, not his, own personal gain. Still we can’t excuse Tayson for his life of crime, mostly as a youth, and violence since he had everything going for him and ended up blowing it. And with that he blew his chance of possibly being the greatest heavyweight, topping the likes of Ali Marciano Dempsey and Joe Louis, champion in boxing history.

Torbaaz Storyline

The film is about child suicide bombers in Afghanistan, who have been trained to believe that killing the enemy is a virtue and glory in afterlife Tne Taliban abduct unsupervised children from outskirts of their villages and then brainwash them into suicide bombers. This started in 2007. It is 2014. Abdullah Qazar (Rahul Dev) is a commander of territory in Afghanistan. To kill him, American commanders bomb an entire village full of innocent civilians. But Abdullah has escaped.Naseer (Sanjay Dutt) is a celebrity (and an ex army doctor) who has reluctantly traveled to Afghanistan for the Hope foundation. Ayesha (Nargis Fakhri) is his handler there. Naseer’s wife Meera (Priyanka Verma) was the founder of the foundation who today supports a 1000 kids across Afghanistan. Naseer is not keen on this, as his own son was killed in an suicide attack conducted by an afghan kid. He cant see kids as anything but terrorists. Ayesha begs Naseer to see Meera’s work and that he needs a purpose in life. Naseer agrees to visit the refugee camp. Abdullah (Rockey Raina) is Naseer’s driver in Afghanistan. Naseer’s son was a cricket enthusiast. In a refugee camp, 2 Pakistani boys (Baaz (Aishan Jawaid Malik) & Talib) arrive and have a real cricket ball. This is a real treat for the Afghan kids, who have never seen cricket equipment before. The Afghan kid are in awe to hear stories of Afridi and Kohli from them. Gulab-Ud-din (Rudra Soni) takes the ball from the Paki kids as he is the leader of the afghan camp. But Baaz fights Gulab and wins it back. Talib’s mother was a suicide bomber. Gulab wants the ball and challenges the Paki kids to a cricket match. Winner keeps the ball.Naseer visits the camp as the match is in progress. When the ball is hit towards him, he throws it into the US compound, as the kids cannot retrieve it from there. One day a man approaches Naseer and says he is the father (Daljit Sean Singh) of Niaz (Mohammed Haq Peer Khan), the kid who suicide bombed Naseer’s son Aryan (Preet Bhanushali). The father is deeply apologetic to Naseer and seeks his forgiveness. This changes Naseer’s attitude and give him closure. He agrees to work with Ayesha and help the foundation. Naseer goes back to the camp with his friends and organizes a match of his own. The afghan kids agree to play with him, but the Paki refugees stay away. Abdullah is chasing the Paki kids as they escaped from his camps in Pakistan.Naseer starts a cricket training camp in the refugee camp, with a chance to get trained at the Kabul cricket Academy. But the kids soon start fighting with Gulab accusing Talib and Baaz of being Taliban supporters. Other kids include Ali Sher (Tapajyoti Sarkar), Wahid (Ballu Panchal), Imlal (Kanha), Khoda Baksh (Wahib Kapadia), Sadiq (Rehan Shaikh).. Baaz decides not to play as he does not agree with the ideologies of anyone not with the Taliban. But in his heart he is dying to play. Naseer also introduces other kids from different tribes.. This causes issues as traditionally these tribes are at war with each other in Afghanistan. But Naseer persists. Gulab is dismissed by a Hazaras, a player from a warring tribe. Baaz steps up to bat and hits him for a six. Gulab and Baaz become friends and eventually they befriend the Hazaras players Wahid and Imlal, as well (Naseer refuses to coach them till they accept them both in the team). Torbaaz – Black Falcon. Naseer wants coach of Kabul Cricket Academy Shariyar Khan (Gavie Chahal) to coach his boys. But Shariyar refuses as he thinks the boys don’t have the right mentality and are suicide bombers at heart. Naseer challenges Shariyar to a match of his team against Shariyar’s under 16s. If Naseer wins, the boys will be trained at the academy, if they lose Naseer will pay the academy USD 4000.As the US forces tighten the noose on Abdullah, he retaliates by targeting Kabul. There are blasts everywhere. Plus Abdullah tracks down Baaz at the refugee camp. Abdullah takes Baaz back along with the other Pak kids and restarts their training. Naseer and Ayesha look for Baaz desperately. Naseer asks his Afghan workers to help him get a meeting with Abdullah. Abdullah abducts Naseer and gives him a brief torture. Naseer argues that Abdullah should not take away hope from the kids. He wants Abdullah to let the kids play one match, as promised to Shariyar. Abdullah realizes that this match will be a way to spread more terror (The match has media coverage as well) and agrees to release the 3 Pak kids for the same. The match is set for the FridayThe match is underway between Kabul Juniors and Team Torbaaz. Kabul Juniors win the toss. The Torbaaz bowlers are carted all over the park, and soon Kabul Juniors are 53 for no loss. Sadiq steps up to bowl and takes a wicket. In 10 overs, 103/2 after Baaz also takes a wicket. Imlal returns and takes a hat-trick. Soon Kabul Juniors are all out for 165. After Gulab is run out, Imlal and Baaz come together and take the score ahead. TOrbaaz are 94/3. But then Imlal is out.. Khoda Baksh and Baaz take them to 138/5 when Khoda is out. At 19 overs they are 145/6, with 21 more to win. Abdullah also reaches the ground. Baaz scores the runs with Sajid and Torbaaz win the match.Naseer finds Baaz and Talib in the dressing room, wearing bomber vests. The Taliban attack the crowded venue from outside and crowd the audience into a small space. Naseer finds Baaz and pleads with him to abandon the attack. Baaz thanks Naseer and goes straight to Abdullah and detonates the bomb.

Torbaaz Movie Reviews

Except for Sanjay Dutt, movie has nothing special to offer

Torbaaz is a movie about an ex army doctor Nasser Khan (Sanjay Dutt) who aims to change future of afghani refugee children through cricket and bring some joy to their life. Well this is not an easy role to portray but Sanjay Dutt just fitted into it.

Torbaaz is certainly best than the movies releasing now a days as it provides you atleast an original story and good performances. The story here is certainly a good one which needs to be told especially in the times like this. But unfortunately Torbaaz fails in the screenplay and direction.

Girish Malik just could not hold the movie together. He had all the elements to make this movie a good one but unfortunately he failed.

Acting wise, Sanjay Dutt is on the top of his game in this one and Rahul Dev is brilliant. Nargis Fakhri is wasted in this one.

Overall, if you are a Sanjay Dutt fan you can watch it atleast once.

Fact behind

Movie tell u about the fact, overall it’s ok type not much interesting.

Not Recommended ?? by Hit Ya Flop – Movie World

The makers have missed an opportunity to deliver an impactful film. It has a body, but no soul. The film lacks effective dialogues and tight editing. Also, the dragged screenplay makes it an unimpressive watch.

Sanjay Dutt delivers average performance. Nargis Fakhri has no significant role in the film and she hardly leaves an impact in her short role. Rahul Dev effortlessly played the antagonist Qazar.

Child actors Aishan Jawaid Malik, Hamid Shafi, Mohammed Khairkhah, Rudra Soni are good in their parts and gave watchable performances.

WWE Royal Rumble 2024 Movie Reviews

First rumble ive watched in a while – it was definitely missing something

I love Royal Rumble matches, and think they are the most exciting PPV’s on WWE due to the surprise entrances in each match. Last time i watched was may 3/4 years ago and i remember it being a lot better. There was no legends in the women’s match at all, there didn’t seem to be any in the men’s matches either that weren’t still a regular on the show. The outcomes seemed almost obvious because i noticed the graphic in the corner of the screen announcing who would be on the aftershow was the winners of each match…i mean. Come on!! As soon as i saw the women’s winner in the graphic, i then knew who had won the men’s match before even watching it.

Logan paul is actually surprising impressive and entertaining, and the show was still good, but it lacked the magic it had last time. Alexa bliss, charlotte, sasha banks are sorely missed.

Predictably winners still worth the journey

Road to wrestlemania begins here , while being a really great tagline. Can sometimes Be at the detriment of the royal rumble event. Evident this year Making the winners slightly predictable . With a shot at the title at wrestlemania on the line . You can be certain that some wrestlers Are never going to win this event, due to the fact that they are not the type of wrestler who will be main eventing the biggest match of the year. It’s also felt a bit like the commentary team was in on who would be the eventual winners , which is also a shame has it influences the style of Commentary . Some strong action and a pretty good card across all the matches Make for some strong viewing. Just the predictability meaning both matches are focused on 4 to 5 individuals rather than feeling like anyone is had a chance to win the rumble. Doesn’t take away from the event very watchable this year With some strong Matches outside of the two rumbles .

Wwe missed the big opportunity.

I don’t know why I bothered to analyze it, but it was the most predictable storyline I’ve seen in a long time, causing me to lose sleep last night.

If we break down the matches, the Women’s Royal Rumble was simply amazing, saving the night with its inclusion of feuds, betrayal attempts, debuts, and strong wrestlers. Everyone who needed to shine did so adequately. Jade Cargill’s debut was excellent, and the comebacks of Liv Morgan and Naomi, along with Bayley’s victory, were significant and well-placed.

There were two title matches, and predicting both accurately suggests the show started much higher than it ended. We knew Roman Reigns would retain his title, but I didn’t expect it to be so simple, with just a couple of spears in a 10-minute match. I anticipated a more exciting and dramatic contest. The US title match also fell short of expectations, opting for the simplest method by not having Kevin Owens and Logan Paul lose. Both matches were disappointingly straightforward.

However, the most underwhelming match was the Men’s Royal Rumble. It felt like the most poorly thought-out match globally. With other paths for Cody to reach Wrestlemania, giving him the Royal Rumble win seemed like taking the easy way out. The lack of surprises, despite most participants being undisclosed, and the prominence of the announced four contestants, felt overly simplistic. No need to drag it out further-hopefully, Wrestlemania XL will be exceptional this year.

Women’s RR = 9/10 Men’s RR = 5.5/10 Undisputed Championship = 6/10 US Championship = 6.5/10.

All.I.Can. Storyline

The usual summaries don’t do this film justice. “All I Can” goes well beyond any sport adventure film expanding itself into a classic Hero’s Journey. Which is to say, finding oneself and saving our soul through the adventure. The results are self-evident in these characters as they travel the globe in an almost wild way. This film will transform you. All of this is while the excellent sound track and stunning visuals bring us to reflect on the fragility of our relationships with our environment, ecosystem, progress, and culture.—J.DoGoli

Corners of the Earth: Kamchatka Storyline

Follow filmmakers Spencer Frost and Guy Williment and surfers Letty Mortensen and Fraser Dovell as they journey to Kamchatka in the far east of Russia in search of new waves along the frozen, unexplored coastline. Bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk with more than 150 volcanoes (29 active) the Kamchatka Peninsula in Far Eastern Russia is as remote as it is unique. After 2 years of planning the trip was almost over before it started. An hour before boarding their flight to Moscow, Russia invaded Ukraine. At a time when the world was seeing the worst of human nature, these guys flew behind the iron curtain and found, to their surprise the best of it. Mi-8 helicopters, skidoos, frozen campsites, and frozen bank accounts, this surf trip quickly became far more than anyone could imagine.

Sweet Dreams Movie Reviews

Watches Like A Practice Run.

Where to start?

Let’s start with Bobby Lee floating round this film looking like a marshmallow that got lucky on the lip of a rejection bin. Meaning he looks like a marshmallow that has been rolling around the factory floor in dust, pubes & dirt for 50 years.

His acting is laughably bad; which is a blessing. And when he isn’t trying to act he’s just being Bobby Lee. Theo Von shows promise.

The film itself, is too, and and and, instead of, so but so. This means it fails to really engage. It’s just too choppy. To, next next next. At the very least throw in a few fade shots in. Make the transition smooth.

But the film is not terrible. It watches like a practice run. With a bit more skill the film could have been very good.

It’s absolutely lovely!

Man, this flick is getting too low ratings. It’s a really warm and believable hour and a half with mostly good acting. Never too much and never boring. I’d actually like it to be a bit longer, that’s how much I enjoyed it!

Knoxville does an excellent job and you can really feel the pains he’s going through every time he tears up about how he’s mistreated his 8 year old daughter. Other fun characters are played by Theo von and Bobby Lee, although Lee is probably the weakest link in the movie, yet he still manages to be quite entertaining. Honorable mentions are Mohammed Amer and Jay Mohr who deliver really solid characters. A feel good movie!

Heartfelt, honest, surprising.

I was looking for something light-hearted and entertaining to watch. Maybe with a few feels and some laughs. The trailer made me think of Major League but toned down and a little more staid. It was not that at all but am very glad of it.

I got a lot more. It turns out Johnny Knoxville can turn in a very good performance. Coupled with a great supporting cast that seemed to be directed almost as if ad-libbed. The scripting and end result is great.

Knoxville plays Morris, who we find staying at a rehabilitation house attempting to get his life back by way of coaching his fellow housemates in a softball competition. The comedy is balanced well with the serious side of addiction, with a group of diverse but relatable characters. The result is a far more realistic portrayal of recovery without becoming overly dark. I never once thought it was depressing but, through my own experiences, never felt the subject was treated with anything but respect and honesty.

This one surprised me. Not what I was expecting but am very glad I found it.

Two masters of chess duel each other not only in their game but also in their different ideologies. The veteran Akiva is a Soviet Jew and ferocious Communist, master of his game but also dealing with a declining health while the young and restless genius Pavius has defected to the West to escape from the Communism tentacles. Their differences will be put to test while they’re both competing in the World Chess Championship, with a huge prize at stake just as much as the political ideologies behind those characters.—Rodrigo Amaro

Dangerous Moves Movie Reviews

“Chess holds its master in its own bonds.” Einstein.

All eyes were upon the World Chess championship of 1972 between Russian Boris Spassky and American Bobby Fischer. It created a media frenzy as it epitomised the ideological confrontation of the Cold War and Fischer’s victory accorded him heroic status.

Fischer once observed that “the object of Chess is to crush the opponent’s mind.”

The political and the psychological have been brilliantly combined in this impressive film debut of Richard Dembo which depicts a fictional championship match between a Soviet stalwart Akiva Liebeskind and a younger, former pupil Pavius Fromm who has defected to the West. Some of the episodes might seem more than somewhat bizarre but no more so than the outrageous antics of Korchnoi and Karpov in their match from 1978 which probably proved the inspiration for Dembo’s film.

Liebeskind is in fragile health caused by years of competing at the highest level whilst Fromm, although in the peak of physical health, is already showing signs of the Paranoia which afflicted the aforementioned Fischer.

The director, his first rate cast and his superlative editor Agnes Guillemot have succeeded in maintaining a constant sense of apprehension and intimidation. The tension between the two opponents is given an emotional counterpoint in the strains suffered by their wives, one of whom is portrayed by Leslie Caron as stoically supportive whilst the other, played by Liv Ullman, is distinctly neurotic. The tragedy of the film lies in the fact that the Game of Kings is here played by two grandmasters who have been reduced to mere political pawns.

Alexandre Arbatt is gifted his best role as Fromm and although from the outset he is a thoroughly unlikeable egoist, his character becomes less one dimensional as the tale unfolds. Not for the first time of course the performance that lingers longest is that of the superb Michel Piccoli as Liebeskind. Throughout a long and distinguished career he has specialised in portraying the darker side of human nature but this role is unusually sympathetic and he once again gives a performance of the upmost subtlety. Deservedly nominated for a César( his fourth) he was destined alas to be the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Naturally the film has acquired ‘cult’ status among Chess aficianados but I do not think it essential to be one of that number in order to appreciate its merits. As for the ideological differences, recent events have again proved that these are irreconcilable. It is supremely ironic that the words “Chess makes men wiser and clear-sighted” should have been uttered by a certain Vladimir Putin!

Interesting but definitely not for everyone.

“Dangerous Moves” is a French film that in some ways is a fictionalization involving the chess champ, Bobby Fischer mixed with some Cold War dramatics. The film is about a long-anticipated match between a Russian Grand Champion (Liebskind) and a Russian expatriate Grand Champion (Fromm). Liebskind is older and ill–and he and the agents from his country are trying to hide this from everyone. Fromm is a nut-case (like Fischer)–very, very, very demanding and amazingly neurotic. Neither man likes the other and due to Fromm’s weird antics, it’s not even certain that the match will take place. And, when it does, both players threaten to derail it repeatedly.

The film is an interesting character study of two seriously disturbed and difficult to like men. I appreciated this, as most films feature more one-dimensional and predictable characters. However, many will blanch at the film’s slow pacing and that so much of the film takes place at the match–making it a hard-sell to most viewers–plus there is no hero to root for–just two very determined oddballs. It is very good but also for a very narrow audience. Worth seeing, though, if you are very patient or have a background working in mental health. Otherwise, there might just be some better French films you might want to see first.

The Cold War in a chess game

Disputing the world title of chess, sit down in chairs opposite two soviets. However, none of the two is Russian: one of them, the champion, is Jewish. The other, the challenger, is a Lithuanian, political exile that is refugee in another country. This game will be a mirror of the Cold War: each movement is dangerous, each play is strategically important. Who is the best? The communist Jew, obedient to the Soviet state, or the Lithuanian traitor, enemy of the proletarian revolution? A beautiful end, where the game in itself has, for both, a larger importance than the world title and they consequences. A good film, with reasonable tension, great representative of the rare Swiss movies.

Berlin ’36 Movie Reviews

“He didn’t want to embarrass the Nazis”

Berlin 36 (2009), is a German film directed by Kaspar Heidelbach. As the name implies, the action is set before and during the 1936 Summer Olympics in Nazi Germany.

German politicians were caught on the horns of a dilemma–some of their finest athletes were Jewish. The Nazis would rather lose a medal for Germany than admit that Jewish athletes could be among the world’s greatest.

When it became obvious that German Jews were being systematically kept out of the competition, progressive U.S. citizens called for a U.S. boycott of the Olympics. However, Avery Brundage, the U.S. Olympic President, would have none of this. Not only did he want U.S. athletes to compete, which at least is understandable, but he was a known Nazi sympathizer and anti-Semite. (Not just my opinion–check out his Wikipedia entry.) So, the problem was solved by having the Germans give assurances that German Jewish athletes could, indeed, compete at the Olympics, and then making sure that they didn’t actually compete.

Caught in this sick, volatile situation is Gretel Bergmann (played by the lovely Karoline Herfurth) who is certainly the best woman high jumper in Germany, and possibly the best in the world. The Nazis were determined that she would not compete, and one method they chose to assure this was to bring onto the team an untried, but gifted, athlete named Marie Ketteler. Both Gretel and Marie understand what’s going on, but they nonetheless form an unlikely friendship and alliance.

In the ghastly situation present in Nazi Germany in 1936, whether or not an athlete competes in the high jump may seem extremely trivial. However, the movie gives a good sense of how thoroughly Naziism pervaded the entire fabric of pre-war Germany, and how readily non-Germans with fascist tendencies played along with Hitler’s plans.

Incidentally, although this is not portrayed in the film, Brundage also saw to it that some American Jewish athletes were removed from Olympic competition because “he didn’t want to embarrass the Nazis.” He was just a great all-around sportsman.

We saw this film at the wonderful Rochester Jewish Film Festival. Some of the effects of the large-scale stadium productions will be lost on the small screen, but the intense parts of the film will work well on DVD.

For some reason, this movie has earned a ridiculously low IMDb average of 6.5. Hard to believe and, to me, inexplicable. Ignore the rating. Find this film and see it!

A Nutshell Review: Berlin 36

With Singapore hosting our first Olympics event, albeit the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, perhaps it is apt for us to reflect upon the importance of the values and spirit promoted by the Games toward the notion of Swifter, Higher, Stronger, because not always were the Games free from influence other than sports excellence and the triumph of human determination and to see how perseverance and training paid off.

Based on a true story and set in 1936 Berlin, where Germany is on the cusp of holding their first Olympic Games in the summer, Berlin 36 tells of how politics managed to get embroiled into sports, no thanks to Adolf Hitler sweeping into power some three years before, and taking the Games as a platform to further his party’s propaganda, extending his prejudice and discrimination toward the Jews in not allowing them to compete under the German flag. This of course does not bode well for the United States, and to appease them in order to stave off a potential boycott by the US and her allies, the Germans had to pass off a show to rescind their decision for the Jews exclusion. This means that the world’s best high jumper of the time, the German Jew Gretel Bergmann (Karoline Herfurth) had to be “persuaded” to return to the Fatherland for representation and competition.

This drama directed by Kasper Heidelbach not only tackles the issue of the kind of extreme discrimination and belief in the superiority of the Aryan race, but poses a more thought- provoking examination at the macro level issues as faced by Gretel in tackling and addressing prejudices from all angles, being the lone athlete in a training village, treated like an outcast by fellow citizens. She finds it near impossible to show love and pride in being able to represent her country that doesn’t love her back, what more to earn honours for it? Like any authoritarian regime, they function on the basis of threats not only to self but family, and is able to shape outcomes as desired through silence, and misdirection.

And the worst was of course in hand-picking Marie Ketteler (Sebastian Urzendowsky) to become Gretel’s chief rival both in training and the eventual competition, not that there was any intent anyway to allow Gretel to make it all the way to the Olympics proper. Marie is seemingly able to challenge Gretel one on one, which is quite expected should you read the synopsis or know the background of Marie’s deep, dark secret. Like Gretel, Marie was also forced to be in the limelight to do as told, and deviations to the established plan was going to be frowned upon severely. What once began as a cold rivalry soon paves the way toward firm friendship, as both Gretel and Marie find themselves under the same circumstances of being played as puppets, and both harbour hopes of somehow being able to break away from the bonds that shackle them.

It is precisely the chemistry between the cast, especially the leads, that pull this film off, in providing an engaging and engrossing premise for their cooperation/competition. Production values for this historical story is kept high, and also provided room to boast some fantastically designed sets and effects used to recreate 1930s Germany, as well as the impressively recreated Stadium used for the Games featuring huge Zeppelins flying overhead. These money shots at the finale will put you smack in the middle of the propaganda festivities where important decisions will be made by the leading two athletes, and one can imagine just how the actual mood and feel would be like on the streets and at the venue.

I have a penchant for films about sports from the yesteryears, because when documented and portrayed accurately, allow the modern audience a glimpse into how the sport of today have evolved from time past. The high jump here is slightly different from the techniques and styles employed now, so that should pique your interest enough as one of the points to watch this film. There may be some quarters grumbling about how much the YOG budget is costing us, but let’s not mix politics with this platform for our youths to have a go and competing with their peers representing the best from countries around the world.

Free interpretation of historical event

The year is 1936 in the Germany of Adolf Hitler and the ’36 Olympics is to be held in Berlin. Germany’s best high jumper is the Jewish Gretel Bergmann which creates a problem for the Nazi sports establishment. If they field a Jew and she wins a gold, Hitler would not be amused and this could have nasty repercussions for the officials in charge. Ergo the plan is to enter a ringer, a talented male jumper who has been masquerading as female jumper with success. Though that may sound improbable it actually happened. The jumper is identified as Marie Ketteler though his real name at the time was Dora Ratjen.

The main action begins at the training camp where Gretel and Marie are room mates. As a Jew, Gretel is subject to continuous slights and insults and Marie is portrayed as supportive.

The biggest deviation from reality was the scene in which Marie reveals himself to Gretel to be male. Gretel said she only found out about it years latter from an article in Time Magazine on males who competed as females.

Gretel is omitted from the competitors due to lack of performance. Marie competes and finishes fourth. The film suggests Marie intentionally performed poorly out of protest to the exclusion of Gretel and as Marie set a new world record in 1938 this does lend some credence to that portrayal.

The most interesting scenes are at the camp with the actors practicing their jumps. Thereafter the narrative gets lost in the machinations of Gretel’s expulsion and the scenes at the Olympic village are too fakey.

Karoline Herfurth gives a credible performance as the embattled Gretel while Sebastian Urzendowsky performs heroically in dresses.

As a film its strongest point is the strangeness of the circumstances rather than any merit as a drama.

Phantom Punch Movie Reviews

A lot of historical inconsistencies …..

If you want to see what the real Sonny was all about, watch HBO’s documentary “Sonny Liston: The Mysterious Life and Death of a Champion”. Its brilliant!! This movie…well not so good. Ving Rhames is great as usual. Problem is he may be a tad old for the role, plus he didn’t have much to work with here. A lot of what we know about Sonny was historically inaccurate or missing. No harassment from Ali(a young Cassius Clay) before, or after the Patterson rematch. Ali (Clay) made Liston’s life hell for over a year before their first fight. No scene detailing Sonny slapping Ali’s face in a casino. Not even a mention of his first fight against Marty Marshall. Liston suffered a broken jaw in the fourth round before losing a close 8-round decision. But you wouldn’t know it from this film. Sonny was no choirboy nice-guy for sure. But he deserves better than Phantom Punch.

The mystery has been solved

Robert Townsend said in reports that he wanted to show the true Sonny Liston and he said, “History hasn’t been kind to Sonny Liston.” He goes and he makes Liston’s death look like a suicide instead of a murder? He shows Liston just plain quitting on the stool in his first fight with Ali? He shows Liston trying to blind Ali in the first fight? He shows Liston throwing the Ali rematch for no apparent reason? Townsend is an idiot. This movie is so bad it makes Meteor Man look like a masterpiece.

I was unfortunate enough to see this movie and now I know why it was never released. It is a piece of garbage. This is one of the worst movies I’ve ever scene. Not only is it a terrible boxing movie, but it’s an awful biopic. I was really shocked at how bad this movie was. I couldn’t wait for a movie about Sonny Liston and this is what I got? This movie hasn’t been released to theaters and it never will be. If Townsend is lucky, maybe the movie will get released straight to DVD or maybe they will put it on TV. But I don’t see this doing well wherever it goes.

Meteor Man failed to mention in his movie that Liston was the favorite in his fights with Ali. In the first fight, Liston was a 7-1 favorite. It would make all the sense in the world for him to take a dive for the mob. I read accounts that Liston said he was “only following orders” when he quit on the stool. Another stupid part of the scene that had me shaking my head was the part when Townsend shows them putting a foreign substance on his glove to blind Ali. First of all, Liston did not need to cheat. Liston was a great fighter. He was one of the toughest fighters in history and he wasn’t afraid of anyone. This is a man that knocked out the great Floyd Patterson in 2 minutes. Then it only took him 5 seconds more in the rematch. He slugged it out in 2 wars with Cleveland Williams. He fought a whole fight with a broken jaw and only lost a split decision to Marty Marshall. Second of all, why would Liston try to cheat in a fight that he was going to throw? There’s no doubt something got in Ali’s eyes during the fight, but to say Liston put it there is ridiculous and there is no proof. In the end of the fight Townsend tries to make you believe Liston just quit like a spineless bum. I know some people would love to believe Ali was this mighty man that overcame Sonny Liston, but let’s get real. That’s not the way it was.

The movie gets to the big moment, the infamous “phantom punch.” The scene is so uneventfully done in the movie it’s pathetic. Townsend never even tells you why Liston took a dive in the rematch. He just goes down for no apparent reason. Townsend had the nerve to keep the mob out of that fight too. That fight was fixed. It looked like even more of a sham than the first fight.

This movie failed to show Sonny Liston’s hard upbringing. It also failed to show that he really wasn’t a bad guy and that he loved children and even tried to help people that were less fortunate. One of the biggest slaps in the face to Liston is how they handle his death in the movie. Instead of showing Liston getting murdered they make it look like a suicide. I was completely outraged. I didn’t think Townsend could be that dumb. In the movie they make it look like Liston was depressed over his girlfriend on the side leaving him, so he does heroine one night. The guy was deathly afraid of needles. He never did drugs in his life. Sonny Liston was M-U-R-D-E-R-E-D.

You want the real scoop on Liston, get the book The Devil and Sonny Liston by Nick Tosches. Nick Tosches did what Townsend lied about saying he was going to do. Townsend made Liston look like a no good bum, but that wasn’t the real Liston. Townsend should be ashamed of himself. Check out the Tosches book. Avoid this horribly written and directed movie at all costs. I do not recommend buying it or renting it. It’s not even worth watching on TV. I don’t think Townsend was taking his job seriously when he made this movie. By the looks of it, it’s like he was just fooling around. If you were wondering why this movie was never released, you have your answer. The mystery has been solved.

Ving Rhames stellar performance is the only reason to see this bio of Sonny Liston

Ving Rhames turns in another stellar performance as Sonny Liston in Robert Townsend’s film of Liston’s rise and fall. Liston was an ex-con who rose through the ranks of professional boxing to take on Cassius Clay before he was felled by a “phantom punch” and his own demons. Rhames is truly amazing as Liston and you feel for him. Unfortunately the rest of the film is nowhere near his level with some bad performances, a weak script with awful dialog and a directorial style that makes this tough going. If it wasn’t for Rhames performance I would day that the film isn’t worth bothering with, but he’s so good that he really should be seen if this comes across your TV screen on cable

Full Frontal Monkey

It’s no wonder they added the “X” in the title of this sequel to MVP and MVP 2. It has the best monkey shower scene I’ve ever seen. This monkey nudity only served to make the primate more “human” so I can understand it’s inclusion in the film. With out it, it would have been merely a typical animal sports movie in the tradition of Air Bud.

I haven’t seen monkeys and humans bond this well, since “Gorillas in the Mist”. Not only does the monkey take a shower, but he also brushes his teeth, shave with a razor, plays the drums, plays video games, drinks a frozen drink and gets brain freeze, and oh yeah he snowboards too. What will Jack do next? I for one can’t wait. Opposable thumbs way up!!!

Moving, 3rd best movie of 2004

Just got done watching this much talked about, but forgotten cinema classic. A chimp named Jack snowboards. The chimp can also play X-Box, and actually pulls off some pretty sweet moves in the real and virtual world. A “Mob Boss” bets on the chimp to win a snowboarding race, $1,000 to be exact. Some snowboarding dude says “Tight dog” at the end. The human Mom to the chimps travels around the country with multiple chimps (who all have passports, which by the way are not needed for trips inside the U.S.). The bad guys steal the chimp for like 5 minutes, then he is snowboarding again. The kids keep telling Jack they are gonna take him home but they don’t do anything for days but play video games, play guitar, and snowboard with Jack. It seems like some of the people have amnesia, and maybe some hidden subtext I am missing. Jack is there as a reminder Chimps will do almost anything for bananas.

Scientologist Drivel

Upon first viewing I was surprised by the depth of character the talented monkey-cast presented in MXP3. The simian thespians are present in every scene, emotionally and physically, and impressively match and in some cases surpass the emotional depth of the leading boy of the film, Devin Douglas Drewitz. Young Trip-D, as he likes to be called on set, provides the movie with an obstinately melancholy performance, tantalizing the monkeys’ emotional receptors like so many ripe bananas. Trip-D’s angst and sorrow, expertly captured by cinematographer Mike Southon, is as palpable and inspirational as his name is alliterative. Sadly, before my much anticipated second viewing, I learned that the primate performers playing the lead role of Jack, as well as his off-set monkey girlfriend playing Lucy (quite the looker if you ask me) are active scientologists. Furthermore, these two donated the majority of their paychecks toward dianetic research. Had I been privy to this information prior to my first viewing, I never, NEVER would have spent 75 dollars on the collectors edition DVD and silver-plated palm frond from the much talked about Mexican restaurant scene.

Fair Play Movie Reviews

Interesting Czech film

I remember that in the 1980s it was widely said in the West that the athletic triumphs of the Eastern Bloc were due to widespread doping. This interesting Czech movie tells that story. It’s not on the level of The Lives of Others (which has a very similar theme) but is quite good.

The movie is set in 1983, as the sports machine of the state prepares for the Los Angeles Olympics of the following year (that Czechoslovakia finally boycotted with the rest of the Eastern bloc the 1984 Olympics – something I suppose most viewers are aware of so this is not a spoiler – serves as a sort of ironic coda at the end). It tells the story of Anna (Judit Bardos), a top level runner, but with some dubious connections, as far as the State is concerned. Her mother Irena (Anna Geislerova), with whom Anna lives, was once herself a top athlete, but after being one of the protesters in the 1968’s Prague Spring, has been demoted to a menial job as a cleaner. Irena is still in contact with dissidents, especially Kriz (Roman Zach) to whom she helps in printing his anti government screeds, and as a result she is harassed by the Czech secret police. Her former husband (Anna’s father) has escaped to the West, and Irena wants Anna to follow him, even if that means living alone. The crucial drama is when the coaches decide to give Anna a drug called Stromba which enhances her performance, but has some serious health side effects.

Bardos is fine as Anna, though the pretty, petite actress doesn’t have quite the physique du role of a top level athlete. The good recreation of the 1980s certainly helps.

The title is ironic

The title is ironic. Do Western athletes not take doping? Of course, people rely more on ethnic advantages. Natural bodies must be limited. Behind every record, there will be a pot of medicine.

Weak

Movies about talented athletes training are interesting, as are movies about totalitarian governments, but while this movie is well made it seems to just go through the motions. First of all we don’t get a very good sense of Anna’s struggles or accomplishments as an athlete. The political oppression of her family is also only partly sketched. While this leaves something for the viewer to figure out, it really undercuts the drama and significance of events. And we are supposed to believe that Anna initially doesn’t realize that the secret injections she is getting contain a banned performance enhancing drug. So it seems we are watching a movie about a mediocre athlete who is also unfamiliar with truth. Added to this are her mother’s strange actions, which are supposed to be the tragic result of the government system, but come across more as silly due to her obscure motivations. There is some dramatic tension, and the ending is acceptable, but this movie is half-baked.

First Descent Movie Reviews

“First Descent” technically impressive, lacks direction

Earlier this year, “Lords of Dogtown” brought us the story of the skateboarding revolution in 1970’s California. Seemingly right on cue, “First Descent” now imparts upon us the birth of the snowboard craze in documentary form, weaving together a narrative of the sport’s brief history and the Alaskan backcountry adventures of five of the snowboarding’s biggest and brightest. Co-directors Kemp Curly and Kevin Harrison piece together a finely-crafted exposition of snowboarding that is both informative and technically marvelous, and satisfies despite a strangely glory-centered message.

The cast of real-life snowboarders creates a range of viewpoints that keep things interesting, consisting of Terje Haakonsen (the snowboarding god), Nick Peralta (the pioneer), Shawn Farmer (the 40-year-old hillbilly), Shaun White (the X-Games golden boy) and Hannah Teter (the girl). The film centers around the gang’s trip to the uncharted peaks of Alaska, where they shred the sickest lines down the deadly slopes of previously-untouched mountain ranges. The setting itself rightfully takes center stage throughout the action sequences: frequent fly-bys of the snowcapped peaks against the crystal sky are breathtaking all by themselves. As the snowboarders cut through the powder, the camera captures each upswept flake from angles that intensify the majesty of each mountain, which makes pretty apparent the skill needed to survive the descent. The sound direction adds to the drama, drowning out all ambient noise and leaving only hiss of the boards on the snow. The film’s most technically impressive moment is when one of the boarders touches off an avalanche – the gruesome crack of the collapsing snowdrift followed by the disintegration of an entire mountainside (in slow motion, of course) is nothing but amazing.

Intertwined with the expedition is a telling of the history of snowboarding and brief bios of the five main players. Through grainy 80’s footage, the film shows snowboarding’s roots as an anti-authority movement, combining elements of skateboarding and surfing to form a sport that got the kids interested in hitting the slopes again. The film does a good job of tracing snowboarding through the years by means of various segments throughout the film, showing how it grew from the invention of a bunch of damn punk kids to a billion-dollar industry and an Olympic event. But, you can’t help but snicker when the overly intense, deep-voiced narrator describes snowboarding as a noble movement that “fought to keep its soul” and boldly struggled for validation during its conception in the 80’s. Also, aside from Shaun and Hannah learning how to dig people out of avalanches before their first Alaskan run, the film pretty much ignores the fact that snowboarding can, you know, kill you. And while we’re being negative, we can talk about how the whole movie seems to be a huge action-sports commercial for Mountain Dew and Oakley eyewear. But I guess someone has to pay the bills, right?

The cast bios are a mixed blessing. While they present the development of snowboarding from a personal standpoint, they make the industry out to be some fantasy world where a bunch of independent souls live by their own rules (richly, I might add). Farmer, the 40-year-old surfer dude, enjoys skeet shooting in his backyard with his father and shopping at his favorite store (“Guns, Liquor and Ammo”) when he isn’t getting paid to careen down the side of a mountain. The life of the 18-year-old snowboarding superstar Shaun White is strenuous, only allowing him a week off between signing autographs in L.A. and being the grand marshal at a NASCAR race in Darlington. Apparently, the documentary would have you think that the easiest thing in the world to do is become a pro snowboarder, completely bypassing any kind of training or personal injury the main subjects had to endure. Oh, and the word “gnarly” is used nine times. Take that as you will.

But, despite the thematic concerns, the documentary is wholly entertaining. Even though the “do what you want” attitude toward life may be taken slightly overboard, it provides a generally effective context for the whole film. The spirit of the snowboarding culture is convincingly portrayed in a form that is, in a word, beautiful – if you’re a winter sports enthusiast, pray that this one comes out in IMAX. “First Descent” is a good diversion from exam week that will get you in the mood for semester break – and if the whole “school” thing ends up not working out for you, all you have to do is strap on a board and win some X-Game gold. At least that’s how this film makes it out to be.

Exciting Scenes, Wonderfully Human Story

First, I am *not* in the least bit knowledgeable about snowboarding or any of the related sports (surfing, skateboarding, skiing). And I was myself fearful that this movie would include so much “technical” or “advanced” material that a mere mortal wouldn’t be able to follow it. “Documentaries” can be very specialized, after all.

I need not have feared finding myself out of my depth and neither should *you* if you’re not yourself in the center of the “scene” and yet are thinking about seeing this film.

Because this is really in the spirit of The Lords of Dogtown and … and … well, there was a Surfing quasi-documentary from last summer, I can’t think of the name … but it had the same flavor. The flavor was a special sort of humanistic excitement that for me arises from combining both (a) great footage of the Action; and (b) great narrative and interviews with the People involved.

I liked the sort of back and forth from Present (a sort of Reality Movie type expedition to Alaska with 5 top boarders) and Past (History of Snowboarding).

The scenery from Alaska was simply breathtaking, the descents gripping and exciting and full of vicarious adrenalin rushes.

The interviews with Terje and Shaun and Hannah and Farm and Shawn were wonderfully engaging: fresh and convincing and sincere enough that I as viewer felt like I got a real sense of who these fascinating and delightful persons were.

The history painted the whole Snowboarding Phenomenon with a vivid and appealing personality as well.

The way that the entire film built toward what truly was a blazing, satisfying completion, was just delightful. In fact the sort of sustained baseline of excitement was modulated by a kind of rhythm back and forth from whiteknuckling action back to a little narrative or interviewing to let me catch my breath.

Great job everyone … and *thanks* for giving a viewer like me a little glimpse into a gripping and exciting and wonderfully human world.

Great Documentary on Snowboarding

I never thought much about the attraction of snowboarding over skiing until I seen this documentary. Now I understand. The film is an exploration of the creation and history of snowboarding and it’s explosion into popular culture. The basic setup is a trip to Alaska by three young snowboarders to “conquer” the mountains. The footage of these snowboarders down these mountains is absolutely incredible.

While I naturally enjoyed meeting the snowboarders and getting to know them a little I loved the older footage. You probably thought snowboarding grew out of the Southern California Surfer screen but you would be wrong. It actually grew out of the skateboard craze of the late 70’s. If you every watch a skateboard competition some of the same moves are used in snowboarding.

Since there is no plot this documentary is all about attitude so casting (or selection) was critical for the young snowboarders and the film certainly picked right. Two of the young snowboarders, Shaun White and Hannah Teter won Olympic Gold Medals at Torino in 2006 (in addition to being enormously appealing). None of them seem to have a bit of fear; no matter how hairy the run down the mountain.

I love films that present something I have never seen before and seeing these guys get dropped off at the top of the mountain and go down for miles is unbelievable. Quite a film – See it. and my highest recommendation.
