LEGO Jurassic Park: The Unofficial Retelling Movie Reviews

Great Lego version of Jurassic Park!

It’s a beat by beat story telling of the first Jurassic Park. Some scenes are cut short but every memorable scene is in there. There are a few jokes thrown in every now and then making fun of the fact that they’re Lego characters – such as when Alan Grant turns Ellie’s head around, he actually turns her hairpiece around. Ha! The voice actors are not the same as in the movie even though Ian Malcolm does sound like Jeff Goldblum. You’ll definitely get some chuckles and smiles out of this short Jurassic Park movie if you’ve seen the real one. I wish the scene with the kids in the kitchen was longer though. At the end, Ian Malcolm hints at a retelling of The Lost World. I really hope that happens!

Made for kids because the first film is too smart …

Look this is made for kids because the first and original Jurassic park is very scary and a very smart movie that’s about characters and not just dinosaurs …. Simple and this is a weak move …

Where is the HAMMOND Prequel ??? !!!!

Where is the HAMMOND Prequel ??? !!!!

why does this exist?

Why does this movie exist? I thought it would be a comedy, maybe a parody of the source material? But no, 10 minutes in and have yet to see anything resembling comedy. It adds nothing to the original. Ian malcom (goldblums character) was a minor character in the original but takes center stage here, flexing for the camera, showing off how rich and famous he is, and narrates the entire movie but fails to tell one singular joke. You’d think he would at least TRY to be funny. This movie seems utterly pointless. It just reminds me that i would rather be watching the original.

They retconned samuel jacksons death in the film, too. His character apparently lives to the end to be a hero who reboots the park. As far as i can tell there was only one joke in the whole movie; a dinosaur steps on a lego, and it happened 15 min in to the 22 min feature. Pointless.

Gozo/Gozar Storyline

In a world troubled between capital and hunger, free thinking about the importance of enjoyment and enjoyment as an act of resistance. No longer representation as a metaphor for the relationships sold by American cinema, but life lived as a metaphor for resistance to bad politics lived in the world.

Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure Movie Reviews

Almost “Walking With Dinosaurs” quality

This short documentary was a bit of a mixed bag. First the 3-D and CG: the director obviously was more at ease with the the extensive CG then the live action elements, because the 3-D work was jarring and uneven during then. Part of the problem occurs when the live-action segments are shot too closely to the target. There is a sequence in a car and it took me ten seconds at least to get adjusted to the 3-D. These are not problems that occurred in vista shots.

The CG work was fantastic and the 3-D involving it was equally as impressive. I saw Meet the Robinsons in 3-D this spring and am eagerly awaiting whatever other 3-D offers there are in store like Beowolf and Avatar.

I hate to keep ragging on the live-action elements, but the acting was wretched too. Apparently it is difficult finding somebody who will have all of 30 seconds of screen time and maybe 20 words of dialogue to not sound like they’re reading off of a teleprompter. It is nice to see and having a 5-year it is nice to be able to show and explain to him how we can and do know these things about creatures that died out millions of years ago, but with such wooden acting it makes me just sit and wait until the CG behemoths come tearing across the screen again.

I found it uninspired

“Sea Monsters: A Prehistoric Adventure” is only worth seeing for the biggest fans of dinosaur films. It is a 40-minute documentary from almost 10 years ago narrate by Liev Schreiber. The director is experienced documentary filmmaker Sean MacLeod Phillips and the writer is 2-time Emmy nominee Mose Richards. The script, however, is maybe the weakest aspect. It’s like mediocre daytime drama taking place in the ancient ages with the constant kill or be killed. No real informative aspects on the creatures depicted in here. The animation is probably the best aspect from this film, but even this one is not particularly great. And the staged sections with the archaeologists in the 1970s are just pretty cringeworthy to watch to be honest. I can see little values here from a scientific perspective, which is really sad as this topic certainly had a lot more to deliver than what we saw here. Not recommended.

Okay, if a bit tacky at times.

Sea Monsters features a story of a family of Dolichorhynchops (“long-nosed face”) – a type of plesiosaurs – living out their lives in the inland sea of what is now North America. The film begins with the Dollie mother giving birth and nurturing her two young in the safer near-coastal shallows, but eventually the trio takes to deeper waters to follow the migrating fish. Wonders and dangers await.

Narrative: very decent. The concept of following one family works well, and ultimately serves to provide food for thought and empathy. What doesn’t work well is that the doc flips back to 20th century paleontologists (played by actors, mostly) studying the protagonists’ fossil bones every few minutes. This is done so frequently that it’s distracting.

Graphics: I’m gonna say “good”. The animation of the marine beasts is a little too glossy and artificial-looking, – going for drama rather than realism, – but the lighting is dynamic and captivating, the movements fluid and exciting, and the overall artwork – lush and detailed. So the somewhat unrealistic-looking animals didn’t bother me much.

The music is cheap… discount-Disney-style… and usually doesn’t fit well.

Overall: the Sea Monsters and Walking with Monsters episodes of BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs series appealed to me more… but if you enjoy this subject, the present doc is 40 minutes fairly well-spent. 6/10.

Oh Doctor! Movie Reviews

Delightful comedy about horrible people

Roscoe Arbuckle plays a rude family man who argues bitterly with his wife and pushes around his young son (played by a twenty-one year old Buster Keaton!). When he is lured in by a greedy vamp who, along with her thieving cohort played by Al St. John, his wife’s jewels are endangered, in addition to Arbuckle’s own finances, which are all at stake in a horse race.

Oh Doctor! is one of Arbuckle’s stronger efforts, with more of a coherent plot and character-based gags. Arbuckle plays a truly horrendous person, which is funny in a dark way. Al St. John seems to be a love or hate performer in my circles, but he’s great here as the scheming conman. Folks used to Buster Keaton’s stoic manner will be shocked to see him mug so here, crying and laughing and whining with his mouth gaping open at its fullest capacity. Especially hilarious when you read interviews of his from the 1950s and 1960s in which he proclaimed he could not smile in front of a camera ever. That’s show business, kiddos.

In which Roscoe portrays a deeply dysfunctional doctor dad

Considered a missing film until quite recently, Oh Doctor! marked the fifth collaboration between Roscoe Arbuckle and Buster Keaton. The surviving print turned up in Norway, which might account for the somewhat awkward English of the re-translated title cards, but no matter; this is an exciting and fascinating find for silent comedy buffs, and an offbeat film in many respects. Not hilariously funny, but novel and enjoyable in its own way, and of course a real treat for fans of the two stars.

Viewers who’ve seen Arbuckle’s other “Comique” brand comedies will notice right away that Oh Doctor! is plot-driven to an unusual degree for this series. In some of the other films it seems as though the guys started shooting with only enough material for a one-reel short, then had to switch gears midway through and come up with a whole new storyline. (You find that in some of the Sennett comedies too, suggested by weird hybrid professions for the lead comic: barber/jailer, sheriff/photographer, etc.) But for this film screenwriter Jean Havez provided a strong storyline, and while some of the gags appear to have been improvised along the way, director Arbuckle and his crew clearly stuck to the script for the most part. Most of the laughs derive not from slapstick or pratfalls — although you’ll find a fair amount of roughhouse here — but from the situation. Oh Doctor! is essentially a situation comedy with farcical elements, and that alone makes it unusual in Arbuckle & Keaton’s output from this early period.

More striking still is Buster’s far-from-deadpan performance as Roscoe’s obnoxious son. He wears a sort of modified Buster Brown outfit, and plays much younger than his actual age (only 21!) at the time the film was made. Although Buster can be glimpsed smiling, laughing and weeping in some of the other collaborations with Arbuckle, right up to The Garage, their last co-starring effort, he really mugs up a storm in Oh Doctor!, sobbing with enthusiasm in almost every scene. Then again, he has good reason to cry, for he has one mean daddy here. From the very first scene “Dr. Holepoke” is hostile to his son, deliberately sticking him with a pin, kicking him, pushing him over a table, etc. Sure, this is only a silent comedy from a simpler era, and maybe we’re all too self-conscious about this sort of behavior now, but still as I watch this I wonder which came first: the kid’s bratty behavior or Dad’s slapping and punching?

It’s notable that Roscoe Arbuckle, like W.C. Fields later on, often chose to portray such unattractive characters, as he does here, and that audiences loved him anyway — up to a point, that is. In this film Roscoe is not only mean to his son, he’s chilly towards his wife, flirts openly with a dark-eyed vamp at the race track (where he also brusquely snatches his wife’s binoculars away), squanders his family’s money on a losing horse, and deliberately crashes his car into a crowd of pedestrians so he can distribute his business card to the injured. Then to top off his perfect day, he gets tipsy with the race track vamp in her apartment, and for the finale, steals cash from a bookie joint while impersonating a cop, stuffing wads of bills into his clothing. In the final shot, when Mrs. Holepoke kicks her husband, he kicks her back.

And yet, despite all of the above, when this movie is over we somehow like Roscoe nevertheless. On screen he is doggedly sympathetic, and even when his character acts like a jerk his own likability as a performer transcends everything. Arbuckle had a special star quality, and it lasted until his luck ran out. But he shines in Oh Doctor!, and we can be grateful that this highly unusual and entertaining film has been rediscovered.

Oh Doctor! was another enjoyable Arbuckle/Keaton short

This is yet another Roscoe Arbuckle/Buster Keaton short I watched on the DVD collection of the best of Arbuckle/Keaton. In this one, Arbuckle is married with Buster playing his obnoxious son. Perhaps because I knew this was a slapstick comedy with Keaton being an expert at acrobatics, I laughed every time Arbuckle shoved his “son” upside his head with the result of Buster constantly wailing! Buster also laughs at such inappropriate places as when the horse at the racetrack Roscoe secretly bets on keeps running in circles! Plot-which also has Arbuckle flirting with another woman unbeknownst to his wife-gets confusing at times but whenever he and Keaton do their stunts, the short provides some decent laughs. So on that note, Oh Doctor! is worth a look.

To the Arctic 3D Movie Reviews

An artic tale

Seeing ‘To the Arctic 3D’ was never going to be in any doubt. Have loved nature documentaries for a long time, have always loved learning about polar bears and they are always interesting in every documentary they feature in and although the Arctic is a familiar documentary location there is always something new to learn about it. Do appreciate anything with some kind of message, regardless of how they are eventually executed. Meryl Streep has proven many times that she can narrate beautifully.

‘To the Arctic 3D’ has a lot to like about it. It is never going to be one of my favourite nature documentaries and to me there are better polar bear documentaries around and better IMAX documentaries around. It is still worth watching if one wants to see as many polar bear documentaries and IMAX ones as well (the latter ones have been interesting watches but variable ones too, this is neither among the best or worst). Nothing really is done terribly, though one aspect does bring things down by quite a lot, but the flaws are again uneven. It is not one of the best nature documentaries out there or a milestone, but it is not one of the worst either.

Am going to start with the good things. The production values are absolutely impeccable all round. This is another fine example of an environment that is exquisite to look at but very harsh with its challenges, photographed vividly and beautifully. The polar bears look absoluely ravishing up close and a lot is learnt about them and it is stuff that is illuminating rather than repeating already known facts.

Furthermore, the way it is told is touching and doesn’t hold back. The narration is delivered beautifully. The polar bears are truly fascinating and very easy to relate to in all kinds of situations. The music on its own is nice. Did think that the message was admirable and it is a relevant and important issue and still needs to be addressed.

On the other hand, there are things that could have been done better in ‘To the Arctic 3D’. Did feel that it could have made its points with a lot more subtlety, as it is rather heavy-handed and also on the one-sided side. All doom and gloom and not much hope, and it does unbalance the film in my view. As said the music is nice on its own but is used too much and doesn’t gel stylistically, a gentler tone was needed.

While Streep narrates beautifully, the narration is on the underused side. The IMAX doesn’t look cheap but in my mind it wasn’t needed and the film feels too short.

Concluding, not great and inconsistent but a lot impresses and the intentions are noble. 6/10.

Not bad, but not fulfilled its potential either

“To the Arctic 3D” is an IMAX 40-minute nature documentary from 3 years ago. 2-time Oscar nominee MacGillivray and Stephen Judson worked on many of these, so lack of experience certainly is not an issue here. same goes for narrator Meryl Streep. I think she mostly does a fine job. It’s not great, but I liked how clear she spoke that even non-native English speakers like myself have no problem understanding the contents. I did not like the male narrator though. No idea why they had to include a second voice. In terms of the contents, it’s not bad, but could have been better. Sometimes it felt artificially dramatic and there is one part with really bad music in the last third of the film that would have fit an animated movie for little children. No idea what they were thinking there. However, what we see is nice. The arctic is as beautiful to look at like the polar bears and the other animals in here. Some of the information are fine and new, but in terms of telling us something new this film also comes short. It partly makes up for that in terms of the emotion and display of maternal love we have here. All in all, a decent watch that still misses out on greatness though.

sometime beautiful

Meryl Streep narrates this environmental IMAX nature film. Paul McCartney provides the songs. There is a warning about global warming projecting declining ice-coverage to the year 2050. This follows a mother polar bear and her two cubs. There are also other life such as the herd of caribou, underwater life, and the people of the north. There is one particularly intense scene as the polar bear family is chased by a large male. Otherwise, the animal photography is functional without being exceptional. There are some beautiful grand sweeping vistas. I would have liked more underwater filming of the tiny creatures. As a nature film, this is good enough. The environmentalism can be grating. Sometimes, it’s not necessary to preach so much.

The Death and Return of Superman Movie Reviews

great just great

Awesomely funny take on the death and return of superman with Matt Bennett and Liz Gillies, both from the victorious TV show, which made me surprised when I saw them, weird. But it is very good though even if it may offend some DC fans with the negativity of the comic and DC itself. The writing is top notch and there are some really famous cast members in there, I think I saw Simon Pegg. I think it really should have more notice because of the star cast and writing. I think you will like it if you are familiar with the story liner or not because it is a laugh. I found this on YouTube and just thought it was a good video but then the cast surprised me and I found it here with one review so I just decided to be second because I felt like would be a good idea, if you haven’t seen it and are reading this then go to YouTube and search it.

Simply Hilarious

I saw this at the Cinefamily world premiere in Los Angeles, and as someone who has no interest in comics, I must say this was so much fun. It’s not your traditional short film. Rather, it’s kind of a hybrid between Red Letter Media’s Star Wars reviews and the Drunk History. Max Landis, son of director John Landis, has a real zeal for storytelling and makes the story of Superman’s death interesting and exciting. The short runs about 20 minutes which is about 5 times the length of most short films. But Max’s energy, the great costumes, fun effects and visuals make the time fly by. The most shocking aspect of this piece is the cast! Somehow Max Landis has managed to get film stars like Elijah Wood, Mandy Moore, television stars, internet stars, and even Academy Award Winning director Ron Howard to run around in silly costumed reenacting his interpretation of a Superman Comic. On top of being highly entertaining, DAROS is also educational in it’s own right. I walked out of there feeling more aware of what seems like a pretty important moment in the world of comics. I hope Max does more of these!

Would have been much better with subtlety. And a modest filmmaker.

The main reason I watched this 17-minute short film was Mandy Moore. I actually really like the idea of her being cast as Lois Lane and I certainly would approve of that decision in a real Superman movie. Unfortunately, Moore did not have that much screen time in here and also her voice was done by somebody else. Still it was nice to see her, it’s kinda rare these days with her being mostly in animation. Anyway, this film already starts off by the false perception by the filmmaker that there is something wrong with Superman. There is not. He is one of the biggest heroes out there and gets millions of people into theaters. This film was written and directed by Max Landis and he also narrated the story. So far, that is still fine. However, the way he comes off in here is that he is incredibly full of himself and believes he is a bigger star than Moore, Wood, Howard, McCurdy and Pegg. Why the hell would he speak their voices all the time. And why would he constantly show himself during this short movie. Has this guy heard nothing about subtlety. Literally, he is in the face of everybody during these almost 20 minutes and he is truly annoying with his constant rambling and how he thinks he knows the truth about everything. This way he destroyed a piece of filmmaking which actually had some potential to turn out good, even if he included every superhero you could think of in here. Quality over quantity, dude. Final verdict: Not recommended.

Ram Dass, Going Home Movie Reviews

Grace and Love !!!!

Having known and being an Ayurvedic doctor to Ram Dass for may years, I love Him dearly. Director Derek Peck captured the essence and insight of the Spirit of Ram Dass, in such a gross yet subtle way. The film was an excellent example of a great Director who really knew how to zone on what is in the mind, heart and spirit of one of our Great Spiritual Teachers of the 21st Century. I love the part that Ram Dass explains His love for Hanuman and why His Guru, Neem Keroli Baba gave Him the sacred name, RAM DASS (The servant of the Hindu God RAM, from the epic story, The Ramayana). A great Powerful film, to raise the consciousness to a higher level, for everyone who experiences it !! Blessings to Director Derek Peck for bringing this into the Light. Love, Kanubhai dasa

Perfect

Simply beautiful. Love everything…everything

Please watch this short film. It’s perfect in in every way. Life is beautiful

Pure.

The film is touching, mesmerising and insanely beautiful. The movie takes you on a nostalgic trip to the land of unknown, the cinematographers have done a wonderful job. There is a calming and a soothing play of the soundtrack along with soothing visuals. The film could have been longer . Simply stunning.

Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas Movie Reviews

Elf hazard

This cynical cash in animation short basically retells the story of Elf, the Will Ferrell film without any of the charm and many of the cast from the original film.

Ed Asner does reprise his role to voice Santa who tells the grown up Buddy who thinks he is an Elf in the North Pole that he is actually human who stowed away in Santa’s bag as a baby.

His real dad is Walter Hobbs living in New York who has been on the naughty list for years.

Buddy travels to see his father who works at a publishing company with a horrid boss. Walter is taken aback at first to see this grown up infant but Buddy’s relentless cheer transforms him and when Santa comes to deliver presents the curmudgeonly Walter gets the festive fever.

Because this is labelled as a musical we have to put up with some mind numbingly dull songs. Even the animation is not much to shout home about.

It would be just be better to put the Ferrell film on.

I like this special. It’s actually pretty entertaining.

Calm down, people. It’s okay if you don’t like this special. Don’t worry, you have every right not to like this, you just gotta believe that there are a lot of Christmas specials out there that are WAY worse than this. I mean, sure; It’s not the best Christmas special of all time, and it’s not nearly as good as the 2003 film with Will Ferrell, but that doesn’t REALLY mean it’s the world’s worst Christmas special. The reason why it’s practically like this is that, in case you didn’t know, Elf (2003) had a Broadway musical back in 2010. It was called “Elf: The Musical”. I have not seen that musical, but it’s actually good. I like this special, because it had great songs, nice animation, hilarious voice acting, an interesting story, and likable characters. Though, I’ll admit, the scene where one elf was all like “ALL THE TAHHME!!!!!” is kind of creepy, but this special as a whole is not the Christmas special from hell. Wanna know what’s the REAL worst Christmas special of all time? Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer is worse than this, Eight Crazy Nights is worse than this, The Christmas Tree (1991) is not only worse than Buddy’s Musical Christmas, but THAT special is the second worst Christmas special of all time, where as Rapsitti Street Kids: Believe in Santa is the world’s worst Christmas special of all time. Personally, I’d prefer to stick to this special than Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer. If you don’t like this, that’s okay, just believe that there are a lot worse Christmas specials out there than this.

one funny song in an OK Christmas special

Christmastown in the North Pole is a really happy place. Buddy is the happiest one of them all and really really accident prone. Santa tells him that he is actually human who stowaway in Santa’s bag as an orphan baby. His father is Walter Hobbs living in NYC who’s been on the naughty list for over 50 years. He travels to see his father who works at Greenway Publishing. He’s thrown out of his father’s office. Then he meets and falls for Jovie who’s ringing the donation bell on the street.

The first song is funny. I hoped that the special would continue like that but it never gets back to that level. Jim Parsons is a great cartoon voice but completely different than Will Ferrell. He sounds a bit like Jack McBrayer. Buddy keeps the show rolling. However the other songs aren’t that much fun or catchy. They sound like the usual Broadway fare. The animation looks charming. They do change a few things from the movie. I wish the changes could have made the second half better.

Good Night, Nurse! Movie Reviews

Arbuckle Teams Up With Keaton To Produce A Classic

There’s an old phrase, “Good Night Nurse,” so popular in the 1920’s. The expression meant a disastrous or a surprise ending. It originated from Roscoe Arbuckle’s July 1918 “Good Night, Nurse!” During one scene, Fatty disguises himself as a nurse trying to escape a sanitarium his wife had committed him to for his excessive drinking. When he’s confronted by the hospital’s head doctor, played by Buster Keaton, he begins to flirt like a fourth grader with him in the hallway. Keaton returns the shy mannerisms, creating a classic scene that is still talked about today.

One of the reasons Arbuckle was so impressed with Keaton is the synergy both created when they spent hours bouncing ideas off one another and expounded those jokes into a coherent, yet memorable progression of visual compositions on film. Keaton returned a year later after being honorably discharged from the Army, and appeared in a trio of films with Arbuckle before he was rewarded with his own film production unit under movie executive Joseph Schenck.

Did I see this movie, or did I dream it?

I tend to enjoy the comedies made by Buster Keaton and Roscoe Arbuckle during Buster’s movie-making apprenticeship, but I can also see how they may not be to everyone’s taste. Compared to Buster’s later solo work these early films are primitive in technique and content, haphazardly structured, and at times vulgar, but even so, at their best they have a wild unpredictability and a kind of loopy charm that grows on you after you’ve seen a few of them. You never know where the story is going, and you sense that the filmmakers didn’t know either, that they were making up everything as they went along, and this quality can be refreshing and exhilarating. Usually, anyhow.

I first saw Good Night, Nurse! as part of a Keaton retrospective at NYC’s Film Forum in the early 1990s, but the print shown on that occasion was in poor condition and obviously incomplete, so much so that the story was incoherent. At one point I even wondered if the surviving pieces of the film had been spliced back together in the wrong sequence. Now that the movie has been restored from better components for its DVD release, I realize it was a bizarre piece of work to begin with, a dark comedy with a very loose plot that unfolds like a disjointed dream.

The film begins with an extended storm sequence. We find a drunken Roscoe teetering about in front of a corner drug store, trying to light a cigarette in the wind. (Watch closely as a woman with an umbrella is blown Roscoe’s way by the storm — that’s Buster in drag!) When Roscoe finally makes his way home, bringing along an Italian organ-grinder, a gypsy dancer, and a trained monkey, his long-suffering wife decides that an intervention is in order, and checks Roscoe into the No Hope Sanitarium. There we meet crazed inmate Alice Lake, Al St. John in a dual role as both a doctor and a patient swathed in bandages, and most strikingly of all, young Buster Keaton as Dr. Hampton, who suavely enters the operating room in a bloody smock, sharpening a pair of steak knives. Soon Roscoe has swallowed a thermometer, provoked a frenzied pillow fight among the patients, and donned a nurse’s uniform to flirt with Dr. Hampton. If you’ve never seen Buster smile on screen, check out the flirtation sequence here, where he matches Roscoe grin-for-grin. Eventually, Roscoe escapes from the sanitarium and everyone winds up outside, participating for a cross-country marathon race. (Again, it feels like a dream: “Then suddenly we were all outside, running a marathon,” etc.) The race sequence is topped with a final surprise twist that isn’t actually much of a surprise, but it wraps up the whole imbroglio on an appropriately weird, anti-climactic note. What were you expecting after all that, a real ending?

In his autobiography Buster devotes a lot of space to the elaborate practical jokes he and his good pal Roscoe Arbuckle used to cook up, when they were on top of the world and full of youthful high spirits. Good Night, Nurse! captures the flavor of those heady days as well as any movie they made together. It may not be their best comedy, but it has a wacky, prankster-like quality that’s quite appealing for those willing to go along for the ride.

Fantastic

The sequence in the rain that opens this short is fantastic, maybe one of the best comedic portrayals of being drunk. There are so many funny bits here, including Arbuckle repeatedly trying to light a cigarette in the downpour, a woman with an umbrella (Buster Keaton!) being blown into him and then down the street horizontally by the gale, and Arbuckle trying to mail a fellow drunk (Snitz Edwards) home after writing his address on his shirt and stamping his forehead. Check out the high kick to the face Keaton gives him, one of two in the film (the other is delivered by Joe Keaton, Buster’s father).

His wife (Alice Lake) has seen an advertisement that claims alcoholism can be cured by an operation at the “No Hope” Sanitarium (never mind that right below it is an article claiming sensationally “Seasickness Cured!”). At the entrance to the place, they meet a heavily bandaged man walking out on crutches (Joe Keaton) saying he is fully cured which gives Arbuckle pause, and allows for a little effect work when he throws the man his crutches and he catches them in perfect walking pose, done with reverse motion. When they get inside, we meet the doctor (Buster Keaton) who has blood all over his surgical gown, sharpening a giant knife as if he were going to carve up a holiday roast. We get a further glimpse of the wickedness of Arbuckle’s humor when a “crazy” woman (also Alice Lake) runs into the room and throws herself into his arms. With his wife looking on, he realizes he can take advantage of the situation and after looking at the viewer, gives her a couple of kisses.

Much of the second half consists of trying to physically subdue Arbuckle to have the operation, or capture him when he tries to escape. Some of that is typical slapstick fare, like a pillow fight that results in a million feathers in the air, but there are lots of other enjoyable bits, starting with the camera gradually going out of focus when Arbuckle is sedated. At one point he disguises himself as a female nurse and then flirts awkwardly with Dr. Keaton, both men putting a finger in their mouth and bashfully looking away, Buster grinning sheepishly, a hilarious moment. Arbuckle shows once again that he was light on his feet, a result of having had dance lessons. Just watch him gracefully leap sideways into a pool to distance himself from the woman who during the escape now wants to go back, just as he pranced around so well in his living room early on. He finds himself in a race of the “200-Pound club” which amusingly has the other contestants keel over by the side of the road, and him dashing to victory.

It’s certainly not politically correct today and interesting to note it wasn’t politically correct in its day either, something that would eventually come back to unfairly haunt Arbuckle when he was put on trial in the Virginia Rappe case. Enjoy him here with his pal Buster, possibly at the height of his career.

The Staggering Girl Movie Reviews

A poetic and problematic reunion between a daughter and her mother

A woman (Julianne Moore) receives a call at her home in New York. She must return to Italy to convince her mother to move with her to the US She is a blind artist (Marthe Keller) who lives in a large house assisted by a caretaker (Kyle MacLachlan). The daughter is writing her memoirs, where her mother (the staggering-staggering-girl in the title?) May have a central role.

Luca Guadagnino offers us a sophisticated medium-length film with permanent jumps in its temporality and in its locations, which even overlap, with flashbacks intervened from the present; Valentino’s wardrobe, Italian cityscape, and Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music reinforce those dreamlike and fragmented qualities (like the title) of the story.

We witness the always difficult moment of resuming the role of daughter in person, in this case in front of a beautiful and talented mother (Mia Goth as a young woman and also Keller today) who became famous and who despite her limitations continues to create. The return to childhood at the same time as the role of an adult overextended by a declining mother. The story of both parades in front of the character of Moore and is headed towards a perhaps epiphanic end.

A tour de force of elegance

‘The Staggering Girl’ brings together a group of creative geniuses. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, a filmmaker whose work can both satisfy lovers of art house and popular films, the film stars in the lead roles Julianne Moore, Marthe Keller, KiKi Layne and Kyle MacLachlan, impeccably dressed in Valentino garments, with a film score by the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto.

In short, the film is about an Italian-American writer working on her autobiography and rethinking her life, who has to move back to Rome to take care of her mother. The structure of the film is complex, with a thin line between reality, flashbacks and fantasies.

Instead of occupying yourself with a minute understanding of the film’s plot, I would rather advise the viewer to sit back for 35 minutes and enjoy the extreme visual refinement, in (among others) the camera work, dresses, and the picturesque Italian landscape, in combination with the spellbinding soundtrack. The last scene left me with a sheer feeling of joy and fulfilment.

The worst kind of art-house

This enigmatic little memory piece may be only 37 minutes long but it still typifies the worst kind of art-house. A superb cast, (Julianne Moore, Marthe Keller, Kyle MacLachlan, KiKi Layne), mooch about in the past and in the present but none of them manage to engage us on any level other than the banal. The director is Luca Guadagnino and this must rank as nothing more than a doodle on his CV, the kind of film that established film-makers with too much power and money, but perhaps limited imagination, make simply because they can. If, like me, you admire the director’s other work it’s best you give this one a miss.

Night Mail Movie Reviews

A Brilliantly Noirish Night Journey from London to Glasgow

Here, courtesy of an excellent DVD from The British Film Institute, is the real-life counterpart of “The Flying Scot”. Produced by John Grierson for the General Post Office Film Unit, brilliantly directed by Harry Watt and Basil Wright, “Night Mail” is a short account (25 minutes) of the special train – literally a traveling post office – that made a 365 nights-a-year journey from Euston station in London to Glasgow in Scotland in the 1930s and beyond. (The film was released by Associated British in 1936). With carriages staffed by the real mail sorters, it’s impossible to separate the studio material from actuality. The only giveaways are the snatches of dialogue which have obviously been post-synced by professionals under the direction of Alberto Cavalcanti. True, in almost all cases, the directors have taken great care to cleverly obscure the mouths of the workers, but their accents are undoubtedly those of actors akin to the credited off-camera commentators, Stuart Legg and John Grierson himself.

Many people have praised the Benjamin Britten score and the brief poem by W.H. Auden, but for me, the chief joys of the film lay in the cinematography by Chick Fowle and Jonah Jones. Just about the whole movie was shot at night as the train speeds through unusually bleak, blighted landscapes, which give this film a distinctive, noirish quality that is reinforced by the smelters, mills and smoke-stacks of Scotland’s dismally sterile, impersonal and uninviting factory towns.

Neither Rain Nor Sleet Nor Track Workers

Where did the British government gain its ability to produce great wartime propaganda films like LONDON CAN TAKE IT!? through the Post Office, where a film unit had been running for years. Here is an early example of one of their masterpieces, making something as dull as sort mail and getting it to its recipient a cinematically exciting short film.

Look at the way the shots are composed, with odd angles, and for 1936, a lightning-fast editing paace that still keeps you watching — you might miss something.– and hand-held moving shots.

One of the most important documentaries to ever come out of Britain

From 1933, the GPO (General Post Office) Film Unit produced many documentaries, inspired by the likes of Nanook of the North, to promote their service. The films had many talented British film-makers working for them, including the likes of Basil Wright and Alberto Cavalcanti (both on the production team here), and have recently been released in three DVD collector’s editions by the British Film Institute. As well as producing some damn fine films, they are key works in understanding the mentality and living conditions of a Britain long gone, when we took pride in our work. They are both uplifting in their detail and wholly depressing given the state of Britain today. I’m only 27 and feel this way, so God knows what the old folk must think.

Night Mail follows the midnight postal train from London to Scotland, looking at various things such as the sorting room, the loading of the train, and the inspired way of collecting mail from various places by catching the bags at high speeds in a retracting net. The last ten minutes features a now famous poem by W.H. Auden, read to the music of Benjamin Britten, that is read rhythmically to the sounds of the train. Starting slow, it gradually picks up pace as the train gets faster, and ends at a breathless pace.

Finishing at around the 30 minute mark, it leaves a great impression regardless of its slight running time. As mentioned before, it manages to capture the spirit of old Britain, and of a time when our public services were actually efficient. Now, the Post Office seems to lose more mail than it delivers, and if you’re lucky to catch a train that arrives on time, you have the pleasure in sitting near some gormless scumbag listening to his s**t dance music out loud, or some lazy fat single mother who won’t deal with their screaming baby. But anyway, the quality of the film-making is often overwhelming for a documentary short, using interesting camera angles, lovely cinematography, and informative narration. I was surprised to see that the average user rating for this on IMDb is 6.8, considering this is one of the best, and most important documentaries to come out Britain. Ever.
