The Terminal Man Movie Reviews

Haywire & Empty Thriller.

Based on the Michael Crichton novel, this adaptation(directed by “Get Carter” Mike Hodges) tells the story of computer programmer Harry Benson, who, in an attempt to cure his brain seizures, agrees to an experiment where he has micro-computers implanted in his brain, in order to correct the faulty brain chemistry. Things don’t go as planned when his new mind starts to get pleasure from the violent impulses he now feels, and so escapes from the hospital, starting a desperate manhunt to prevent him from murdering anyone, and of course to cover-up the scientific failure.

George Segal is believable as Harry, and the rest of the cast is fine, and though Mike Hodges tries, this film is simply too dreary and downbeat to succeed, and by the end, there doesn’t seem to have been any discernible point to it all.

It manages to make a modern Frankenstein story dull…

… and I am not saying slow, which is different from dull. “Babbette’s Feast” is confined in cast and setting and although I guess you could call it slow, it is not at all dull. George Segal plays Harry Benson, a man with a form of epilepsy in which he becomes violent during his seizures and then awakens remembering nothing. He also is paranoid about machines controlling humans ten years before “The Terminator” was released.

His wife leaves him, and it looks like his outbursts will have him traveling through the criminal justice system which can do nothing for this situation or maybe he will wind up shot dead by some would be victim.

So some scientists think that Benson could be a beneficiary of an experimental procedure in which a small computer is implanted in his brain and his epilepsy is controlled by impulses the computer transmits. Post operation, things seem to be a success, but Dr. Janet Ross (Joan Hackett) discovers that Benson’s brain is becoming addicted to the impulses, and in time – and she actually can calculate the time – he will have more frequent and severe violent outbursts.

But before she can do any kind of medical intervention, Benson leaves. Apparently he has prearranged an escape with some woman he barely knows, sporting a blond wig so you can’t tell he just had surgery.

So the last half of the film is just Benson having those predicted seizures and becoming horrifically violent during each one. It doesn’t have the pathos or irony of the Frankenstein monster’s trek through the German countryside. Segal just begins to shake, his eyes roll up in his head, and he does violence to whomever and with whatever is at hand. That’s it. That’s essentially all that the last half is.

George Segal never really got the credit he deserved for some of the really good roles he had in the 70s. This is not one of those good roles, and I really don’t see how he or anybody else but the writer could have saved a film that is really only half there. I’d give the pre-escape part of the film a 7 or 8. I’d give the last half a three. This is where I come up with my 5/10 rating.

Overlooked and interesting 70’s science fiction effort.

“The Terminal Man” is written for the screen, produced, and directed by Mike Hodges (“Get Carter”, “Flash Gordon”, “Croupier”), based upon the Michael Crichton novel, and tells an intriguing story, the likes of which Crichton always excelled at, that combined science and thrills.

The likable George Segal stars as Harry Benson, a computer scientist who, since a car accident, has suffered from blackouts & seizures that made him dangerously violent. Now a team of surgeons is performing ground breaking surgery on him: attaching electrodes to 40 of his brain terminals that will hopefully counteract his violent impulses. However, as the viewer certainly suspects will happen, this doesn’t work, and his brain ends up craving the shocks / stimuli that it receives, and Harry loses control once again.

I can certainly understand the problems that some people may have with this production, as it’s really not the typical thriller at all. It’s slow, and it’s quiet; there’s not even that much musical accompaniment on the soundtrack. It does exhibit a fairly cold, clinical approach, and the emphasis on the story’s exposition will inevitably bore people more conditioned to non- stop action in what they watch. Even after Harry has made the expected escape from the hospital, he doesn’t spend that much time running amok, and certainly does not kill very many people.

But this movie *is* noticeably intelligent and thoughtful and does offer rewards for patient viewers. It has one striking murder set piece that’s rather artfully done; it takes place atop a water bed, and the sprays of water and the way the blood spreads definitely are what make the scene. And, like other movies of this kind, there is a certain wariness (voiced by Harry) on the part of mankind regarding the computer age and what it could mean for us all.

Another wonderful element to “The Terminal Man” is its incredible cast of both stars and rock solid character actors. Segal is effectively low key in the lead, and is nicely supported by Joan Hackett, Jill Clayburgh (in a small but welcome appearance), Richard Dysart, Donald Moffat, Matt Clark, Michael C. Gwynne, William Hansen, and Norman Burton. (It’s particularly fun to see Dysart and Moffat sharing scenes eight years before they did John Carpenters’ “The Thing” together.) And playing smaller roles are the likes of James B. Sikking, Steve Kanaly, Jack Colvin, Ian Wolfe, Lee de Broux, Victor Argo, and Nicholas Worth.

This is all reasonably engaging stuff, leading up to an ending that, while somewhat conventional, is staged in a very unique way. All in all, “The Terminal Man” is a good movie that does deserve to be discovered or rediscovered.

Seven out of 10.

American Cyborg: Steel Warrior Movie Reviews

Austin VS. Cyborg: Who is the REAL Steel Warrior?

17 years after the apocalypse, the survivors live in destroyed cities patrolled by cyborgs. The cyborgs get their orders by sticking their fingers in ATM-like machines. A human woman named Mary (Hansen) has given birth to a baby, which is important, so the species can continue to live in utter squalor. Apparently, in Europe there is less radiation so she must get the baby safely to “the port”. Unfortunately, there is an unusually-ruthless mustachioed cyborg named “Cyborg” after her. Wherever she is, he turns up and shoots everybody. You’ve really gotta watch out for this guy. He really hates babies (which is never explained). Luckily, Mary has some help in the heroic Austin (Lara), a valiant meathead willing to help Mary complete her journey and fight Cyborg along the way. Will she succeed in her mission? John Ryan as Cyborg has a Judas Priest-style leather outfit and mustache. He also has funny glowing eyes and grunts a lot. Almost any Judas Priest song can be applied to this villain: “Leather Rebel”, “Hell Patrol”, “All guns blazing”, etc. I wonder if Rob Halford has ever seen this movie. Joe Lara is sans beard and looking meatheadier than ever. He has a bunch of blank expressions that complement his long hair. Hansen can’t act her way out of a paper bag, but maybe the star that is Lara outshined her.

It’s important to remember that in 1993 the world was in the midst of “Terminator 2 Fever” and AC: SW is a by-product of that then-current enthusiasm. Imagine a mix of Terminator 2 (1992), Neon City, Karate Cop and Omega Cop. It has all the silly trademarks of the low-budget post-apocalyptic genre, including plot points about “RZB”, an anti-radiation drug, and it also might explain the characters’ interest in “modems” and other computer mumbo-jumbo.

This movie isn’t really as bad as you might think. Yes, it is very dumb and repetitive (Austin kills Cyborg, he regenerates and comes back, ad nauseam), and every time Cyborg shows up, he kills everyone in sight with his machine gun but not Mary, of course…but it has a decent pace and some interesting baddies such as drag queens and the dreaded “Leeches” who are, apparently, radioactive cannibals. The one standout fight scene involves Austin facing off against these mummy-like assailants. Also, most of the movie takes place in one abandoned warehouse or another.

Directed by the legendary Boaz Davidson (of the Lemon Popsicle series and co-producer of The Expendables (2010), this is a later Cannon production, so, make of that what you will.

Expected bad… but not awful.

Well, this movie may not be just another piece of crap like most of this type are, but I do not see any point to praise about it either. Same old premise — destructed wasteland, no sign of sane life, deadly cyborgs reigning, some unlucky human beings… it works on a very cheap & boring formula. It reminds me of Van Damme’s Cyborg, but somehow I feel this one better. Just because it has a better story. But please do not expect a breathtaking, mind dazzling sci-fi plot. I was just comparing.

The leadman, Joe Lara, is lucky that he turned out to be a cyborg in the end. Otherwise he himself should question his acting capability. Nicole Hansen added some human touch in this robot-robot game. At least she is the only human among the lead cast. And I’m still in dark why the director chose an old-man figure as the killing cyborg. 3/10.

Steel Warriors coming out to play

Joe Lara stars as a tough martial artist who helps escort the last pregnant woman to Europe, while a cyborg (John Ryan, not John P. Ryan) is close behind in their footsteps. American Cyborg:Steel Warrior (a rather awkward title) actually got a theatrical release (And no I didn’t see this in theaters) and well with all things considered it represents the last dying breath from Cannon films. (Who distributed this) Back in the 1980s, Cannon were the ones responsible for such movies as the American Ninja series, Revenge Of The Ninja, Delta Force, Invasion USA, Masters Of The Universe, Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Death Wish 2-4 and Cyborg. I listed this filmography mainly so I can point out that the type of movies that Cannon used to pedal to market. In this regard American Cyborg:Steel Warrior isn’t the best or the worst production from Cannon, it is just a low budget rip off of Escape From New York with elements of Cyborg and Hell Comes To Frogtown thrown in for good measure, it really isn’t so bad as it is derivative. I mean it’s a B.movie, but i’m not sure this deserves a 2.2 rating on IMDb. The movie itself has a couple decent action sequences but mainly it’s a rip off and I think fans of B.movies will be the ones who find this enjoyable. The movie is also respectably made with some okay production values and the story (if simplistic) makes sense. Although Lorenzo Lamas rip off, Joe Lara is a liability that the film’s competence can’t overcome.

Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe Movie Reviews

Cheapjack sci-fi boasts good Ventura performance…

He’s no Laurence Olivier, but Jesse Ventura is very likable as an actor. Low-budget science-fiction B-flick with shades of “The Terminator” involves good cop Ventura chasing bad cop Sven-Ole Thorsen from the future to present-day Canada. The shoestring special effects are pretty much a joke, and the film never comes up with the kind of futuristic scenario depicted on the poster. However, this thing is almost single-handedly saved by handsome Ventura’s low-key performance. No, he’s not going to win any awards for his acting, but he doesn’t force his dialogue and is an appealing presence on the screen. The picture is the epitome of mediocre, it isn’t original nor remarkable, but on a minor, TV-viewing level it’s decent fare. ** from ****

Keep a straight-face.

Anything starring ex-wrestler / former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura gotta be worth your weight in gold. After appearing as support in such films ‘Predator’, ‘The Running Man and ‘Ricochet’, his first leading role happens to be in something rather lesser; ‘Abraxas, Guardian of the Universe’. It’s a low-rent, corny b-grade sci-fi chase get-up in the form of those efforts done in the late 80s / early 90s (‘The Hidden’, ‘The Peacekeeper’ and ‘Dark Angel’) with certain elements of ‘The Terminator’ (1984) obviously featuring.

Abraxas, an alien officer comes to earth to track down a renegade who plans to impregnate a woman with a child, which would be an actual ticking time bomb waiting to explode if caught in the wrong hands. He captures the renegade, but is too late to stop the pregnancy. Instead of destroying the threat, he spares the mother and baby’s life. Times passes and the renegade escapes and heads back to earth to find the child, but Abraxas is soon on his trail by trying to get to the child first.

It’s best that you just go with the flow. Don’t look too hard into it, as it won’t be impossible to get some sort enjoyment out of it with its unintentional mocking and bizarre nature (like the birth scene). Ventura rocks, but something about his burly physic not matching up to his well-mannered delivery of the material raises some chuckles with his almost-like second-rate Terminator impression. At times the chewy dialogues (honestly it was Shakespeare stuff) seemed too much of a mouth-fall for the two outer-space guests. A robotic Sven-Ole Thorsen forcefully played the evil foe, but Ventura has an sincerely likable air to him that makes him rather appealing in the role. Marjorie Bransfield is decent in her part. Also appearing in very minor support is James Belushi (who has a ridiculous conversation with Bransfield’s character) and the dependable Michael Copeman.

Damien Lee (b-grade actor/writer/director) manages to make the production look better technically than its budget would allow. Sure the minimal special effects and (out of place slow-motion) action set-pieces are low-scale, but modestly crafted. It’s well-photographed and the soundtrack is a flavoured sample of swiftly soothing jazz (odd I know) and electrifying rock. The flabby script is constantly stiff drivel and the screenplay while focused is still quite pedestrian (with a meandering midsection), but whenever Ventura’s narrative voice-over pops up it amuses. The supposed humour on the other hand, (which the script tries for in parts) is dumb and falls flat, because they’re not the moments you’ll laugh at. Talk about a dud of an ending.

Undistinguishable, but better than expected camp that has some heart.

Poorly made Terminator rip off

OK. Nobody in their right mind could have expected much from this movie. But even though I knew Jesse Ventura was the headliner and that the budget was low, I didn’t expect this film to be as bad as it was. The most glaring problem, surprisingly, isn’t the acting. It’s the sound. Ventura enunciates so poorly that it is easy to miss half of his lines (not that it matters in terms of moving the “plot” forward), and the sound itself is reminiscent of 16mm home movies. Expanding on the awfulness of the recording quality is one of the worst background soundtracks I have ever been forced to endure. Improvisational jazz, a U2-clone new wave band, and what sounds like a 12 year old with a Casio keyboard are randomly applied to the scenes in a manner reminiscent of the classically awful soundtrack of Manos: Hands of Fate. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060666/usercomments?start=10

Ventura and his arch-enemy (Sven Thorsen playing a cross between Grizzly Adams and Arnold Schwarzeneggar) don’t bother with facial expressions, changes in pitch or intonation, This is probably a good thing, because the rest of the cast is actually passable. James Belushi’s cameo is the highlight of the film. His scene is really quite funny, and placed well in the film, since it is likely to bring some viewers back from the brink of suicide. Damian Lee has a remarkable repertoire of poorly made extremely low budget films, and Abraxas is, amazingly, one of his better efforts.

The “plot” consists of two super-beings, one a rogue and the other a kind of intergalactic super-cop, who have arrived on earth. The rogue immaculately conceives with a human in order to spawn “the com leader” (At least I think that’s what they call it – the sound is so bad that even after hearing this about 50 times in various accents, I still don’t know what was being said). The com leader is a little boy who has the ability, when upset, to light fires and “spontaneously combust”. Remarkably, the writers do not seem to have been aware that this phrase connotes self-immolation, not destructive potential. Abraxas’ job is to stop the rogue, and to kill the ‘com leader’. The Com Leader’s mother is played by Marjorie Bransfield (the class of the acting talent here), and she appeals to Abraxas’ super-humanity in an effort to save her son.

Predictable is too subtle. This film is frankly obvious from beginning to end. I can’t recommend it to any but the most disciplined bad movie watcher.

Nightfall Movie Reviews

A surefire cure for insomnia.

The award-winning Isaac Asimov story is very poorly adapted into this perpetually uninteresting, plodding production. A planet somewhat like our own has been bathed in sunlight (after all, it has three suns), and now it has been foreseen that the sunlight will disappear, and darkness will reign. The residents, some of whom are terrified by this concept, divide into two factions, enacting the ages-old debate of science vs. Superstition.

This viewer is not surprised to hear that this is NOT particularly faithful to the story (as it is, Asimov disowned it). It’s such a deadly dull affair with nothing to really hook a viewer. Being that it was produced by B movie outfit Concorde, it’s low-budget through and through. It’s very inscrutable, and, although it creates some mildly watchable visuals, it features a largely nondescript cast that is hardly convincing. Star attraction David Birney (‘Someone’s Watching Me!’) gives a performance that is as boring and colorless as the film itself. The appealing Sarah Douglas of “Superman: The Movie” and “Superman II” is on hand, but she’s not given anything truly interesting to do.

“Nightfall” was badly scripted by director Paul Mayersberg, who’d fared a lot better a dozen years previous writing the screenplay for “The Man Who Fell to Earth”; this at least features a decent music score by Frank Serafine, but that is not nearly enough to redeem this forgettable movie.

Three out of 10.

Bad, but twice as good as the 2000 remake

I recently bought the DVD of the Nightfall TV movie from 2000, and regretted it as soon as I saw it. That anyone could possibly do something so low-budget and stupid to an Asimov story is just beyond me. I rated it a 2 out of 10.

Now, at that time, I hadn’t seen the 1988 movie. But I just now borrowed the video tape from a friend, and had a watch. To some extent, it looks like the same people who did the 2000 movie did this one. But, there are differences. The 2000 movie is a complete loss; there isn’t any acting or proper coherence to the story, and of course very little that actually reminds of the original Asimov story.

The 1988 movie is quite a bit better. The actors are much, much better. The production values are better; the overall style of clothes, hair, etc. are much more consistent. And the dialog is better. The story, while ripping the original short story into tatters, at least does make a slight bit of sense in a couple of ways. The whole sex dimension with Ana was not in the original story, but I actually thought it worked all right here. If you accept that they changed the story and had a different vision for the project, I think this was, well, not as bad as it could have been. I don’t think it deserves an avalanche of 1 ratings.

One thing that is really annoying, though, is the way it ends. This movie just ends with the stars coming out and everybody sitting around saying, “oh, that’s nice!” In the original story, much of the plot only takes place after the stars have come out and made everybody crazy – that’s the whole point of the story! That people find out that the universe is infinitely bigger than they thought before, and this makes them crazy and leads to the destruction of civilization. Most of that entire dimension was just cut away here. Sigh.

As an Asimov story, it is a lost cause. Still, seen as an independent story in and of itself, I do think it was half-way entertaining and had a few nice instances of both plot and acting.

So, my rating is a 4 out of 10 for this one.

Too Boring For Me

This movie is apparently meant to make a statement on the difference between sacred and secular knowledge; and the value of science, to both. Written in a time when religion was still held in some kind of regard by the entertainment industry, there seem to be arguments made on behalf of both the religious and non-religious communities. Fast-forwarding to the end, showed some kind of destruction; no doubt brought on by the refusal of each side to cooperate with the other. It looked dramatic and in some way compelling; but was too boring for me.

Evil Spawn Storyline

Microbes are brought back to earth via a space probe from Venus. A scientist is using them in experiments on aging, but dies before the work is finished. His assistant approaches an aging actress who is being passed by for the lead roles, and she injects the serum hoping to become young again. When the actress is still passed up for the plum roles, the alien bacterium transforms her into a hideous bug-like alien resulting in a predictable attrition problem amongst her detractors.—Ed Sutton

Evil Spawn Movie Reviews

Evil Spawn

An aging actress, Lynn Roman(Bobbie Bresee;who, at 37, had one knock out of a body), desperately desires to retain her past glory by nabbing a major part designed for a 20 year old lead, decides to inject an experimental formula given to her by a mysterious scientist. This scientist, Evelyn Avery(Dawn Wildsmith),an obsessive fan of Roman’s, caused the deaths of her boss, Dr. Zeitman(John Carradine; whose role was actually lifted from stock footage of another proposed Fred Olen Ray project, Frankenstein’s Brain)and fellow colleague using a formula designed from alien DNA. It is designed to make Lynn look younger, but has a nasty side-effect, when angered, she transforms into a hideous insect monster! Yes, Bresee turns into yet another monster. Anyway, Lynn’s biographer, Ross Anderson(Drew Godderis, in a dreadful performance with equally appalling voice over narration that seems to attempt a homage of sorts to Sunset Boulevard)investigates the drug she’s been injecting and discovers some disturbing truths. Meanwhile, Lynn’s alter-ego, the insect monster, emerges killing her maid, Elaine(Pamela Gilbert), back-stabbing agent, Harry(Fox Harris), and cheating boyfriend, Mark(Mark Anthony).

I believe there’s an alternate version out there with extra footage shot by Fred Olen Ray, but the version I viewed gives Kenneth J Hall full credit as director. On this page, several cast members represent characters that aren’t in the film I just finished, which was released by Fred’s distribution label for DVD. Anyway, the quality for this movie is below par and the camera-work is exceptionally flat and unimaginative. Bobbie Bresee, however, is well cast and gets a chance to flaunt her magnificent naked figure in a gratuitous shower sequence. Unfortunately, the close-ups of her false monster teeth are laughable, although her creepy eye contacts and furious facial expressions work a bit better. The monster costume comes right out of those bad creature features in the 50’s which I felt was intentional..a beloved spoof of those films, placed within an 80’s modern setting. The film’s theme is the longing to remain a vital figure in Hollywood despite the expiration date looming(..again, right out of Sunset Boulevard)and Bresee, despite how yummy her figure is, seems to tap into the rage that befalls older actresses trying to keep up with the much younger gals entering the industry. The sub-plot with Wildsmith, as the diabolical, deranged scientist, really off-sets the tone of the rest of the film, particularly her scenes in her apartment, taping collective photos and clippings of Lynn on the walls. The monster mayhem is(intentionally?)goofy and rather poorly executed because the costume isn’t the least bit scary..more likely, seeing it will give you the giggles. Pamela Gilbert(..a tall, athletic figure, with long brown hair), as Lynn’s maid, disrobes for the horny male(..and female?)viewers during a swim while her employer is away, eventually falling prey to the monster..told she was too old for the desired lead role she so covets, Lynn’s rage causes the beast to rear it’s ugly head. The scene with an elderly Carradine, attempting to speak his lines(..and obviously reading from cue cards), looks to be on death’s door..it’s kind of hard to watch knowing that he wouldn’t be with us very much longer and seeing him struggle with his lines, barely being able to breathe, kind of brought about sadness because I’m such a fan of his. The opening of the film, concerning the alien monster who attacks Evelyn’s colleague, leads to the film’s standout gore scene..the scientist interrupts a couple in a jeep searching for their pooch, ripping the arm off of the man attempting to see if he’s okay.

Spawn up your Life, with youth-microbes from Venus!

Wow, I’m actually speechless … I have watched lots of awful horror movies in my life and I definitely know to keep my expectations low regarding late 80’s low-budgeted monster movies – especially when the name Fred Olen Ray is even remotely involved – but still somehow I’m truly baffled about how inept and terrible “Evil Spawn” actually is! The best way to describe the film (if you can even call it that) is to label is a smutty and sleazy 80’s remake of Roger Corman’s “The Wasp Woman”. Vain and arrogant actress Lynn Roman still considers herself as beautiful, young and successful, but her surrounding is slightly more realistic. Her agent can’t find her any more roles, befriended directors prefer young brunettes and even her own husband sleeps with younger actresses. Luckily for Lynn, a totally bonkers female scientist comes to see her with a serum extracted from intergalactic Venus microbes that supposedly will make her appear younger again. Yes, seriously! The serum actually works, but not sufficiently and it doesn’t help Lynn to obtain new roles. And thus, like any normal person would react, she injects copious amounts of serum into her veins and mutates into a gigantic alien bug creature that feeds on humans.

Sounds like a lot of brainless B-movie fun, doesn’t it? Well it certainly is, but exclusively for people that are already familiar with the oeuvre/style of Fred Olen Ray and then still have an incredibly high tolerance lever for incompetence. The little intro video hosted by Olen Ray himself, known as the Night Owl Theater, already states clear that the man isn’t really interested in good horror cinema, but merely in ugly monsters and especially naked women. It’s particularly the retarded little details that make “Evil Spawn” such an amusing waste of 70 minutes. The film opens with images of a ridiculous looking spaceship, and yet the rest of the entire film takes place on earth. John Carradine, who looks more dead than alive, appears for approximately three minutes even though he receives top-billing on the DVD cover. He mumbles a couple of inaudible sentences and then literally drops dead in his seat. Several monster films of the 1980’s have become genuine classics thanks to their marvelous transformation sequences. Like “An American Werewolf in London” for example. The transformation sequences in “Evil Spawn” are slightly less overwhelming. When Lynn injects herself with serum, she first receives a mouthful of ugly sharp teeth but then immediately changes into a full-grown and unidentifiable creature! It’s harsh, but I more or less understand why this film didn’t receive an Oscar nomination for the special effects. There’s plentiful of gore and nudity, of course, quite often at the same time, like when the sexy brunette secretary gets eaten by the poolside and blood runs down over her butt-cheeks. The acting performances are horrible, although most of the cast members aren’t all that inexperienced. Lead actress Bobbie Bresee appeared in a handful of B-movies, including “Mausoleum” and “Ghoulies”, and furthermore there’s Gordon Mitchell (who starred in literally hundreds of Italian flicks) and Jerry Fox. “Evil Spawn” is a lot of dumb fun, but I think everyone agrees the best thing about it is actually the DVD cover image.

THE ALIEN WITHIN, the rare version of EVIL SPAWN.

How do you make a bad movie even worse? Apparently you hire Ted Newsom, give him a camcorder and put him under the not-so-watchful eye of producer Fred Olen Ray. Here we have the very fun Grade-Z classic EVIL SPAWN (1986) by director Kenneth J. Hall reedited and with new and pointless inserts shot on tape. The new scenes feature Jay Richardson and Suzanne Ager as cops sitting in a car talking, eating doughnuts and fighting an awful hand-puppet monster, Gordon Mitchell sitting at a desk on the phone and Richard Harrison turning into an pathetic rubbery monster and ripping Melissa Moore’s top off. Scenes from the original film easily provide the most entertaining moments in this version, so you might as well seek it out. Forrest J. Ackerman is seen briefly in the old and the new footage.

EVIL SPAWN (original version): 5 out of 10

Cyborg Soldier Movie Reviews

Cyborg Soldier

Isaac escapes from an installation, after dispatching security personnel, and his creator, scientist Simon Hart, is after him. Isaac is a “regenerative human”, whose synthetic skin can withstand multiple nine millimeter slugs buried into his chest(Simon calls him bullet resistant)..this derives from the evolution in nanotechnology(Hart, with great enthusiasm, affectionately labels him a “nano robot”). Isaac’s memory has been erased and he feels no pain or emotion. He commandeers a deputy’s car(and insists she stay with him until he says otherwise)and flees after a confrontation with Hart’s dangerous hired goons, equipped with hi-tech weaponry. You could rename this movie “Isaac’s Run” for “Cyborg Soldier” is essentially a road/chase movie with our duo attempting to evade capture from both the local police, Simon and a member of the corporation who funds the cyborg soldier project, Janice Fraser, and Hill’s “men in black”(“Mr. Beck”, the bald leader-in-charge, commands this group, kind of an “efficiency expert” who creates and cleans up the messes which could interfere with his boss’ efforts). Richard Franklin is very much robotic in performance, as he should be since Isaac is, in essence, a blank supersoldier whose memory was wiped clean(..though, the movie reveals memories returning, slight images coming back in fragments), with Tiffani Thiessen as his “prisoner”, deputy Lindsey Reardon, who eventually helps him identify who he was before. Bruce Greenwood, as cold-hearted and determined scientist Hart, whose experiments have finally become a success, is an effective villain, willing to do whatever it takes, no matter the cost, to see that his work remains undisturbed, while Wendy Anderson , as Fraser, sees Simon’s handiwork, first hand, after Mr. Beck and his men gun down police officers searching for Reardon, dedicating herself to stopping his operation. Beck had Reardon’s gun placed at the scene of their murder of her boyfriend deputy to implicate her for their crime. For a movie titled “Cyborg Soldier”, there’s not as much action as you’d expect. A small scale set piece here and there involving some hand-to-hand combat, one major shootout, and the major climax at the end as Isaac confronts Hart, with all hell breaking loose, as Reardon follows along, seeing for herself the facility’s rooms where the experiments took place. Nothing you haven’t seen before regarding a superhuman soldier with superior powers and the cold-blooded scientist willing to kill anyone who stands in his way..Greenwood, to his credit can play the unapologetic a$$hole with the best of them. Nice Canadian locations and a competent cast help a rather formulaic plot slightly. No great shakes, but no that bad, either..just not really all that memorable, especially in regards to this particular sub-genre. My favorite scene, also ripped off from, I believe Universal Soldier, has Isaac removing bullets from his chest with a knife as a queazy Reardon looks on.

I am not sure… Is this movie some bad joke or what… Cyborg Soldier who in fact isn’t cyborg soldier, only man that pretend that is a cyborg soldier and tries to do some face impressions like Arnold in Terminator? Or this is just some lame “Terminator like” movie? From the beginning you can sense that there will be no mystery, just some pump ride action and shooting. This B grade movie has nothing new to offer, low scenario, my stomach turns upside down when I see its used in this movie, as well as in million others to. Acting… my goodness… is that a good word for describing the actors? They sucked at all levels…

Why is this movie made? If you ask me, I would say “I don’t know.” Its like million others B ratted movies, nothing innovative, after hour and a half watching you would regret for spending that time useless… But if you wish action without thinking, when you know the ending after 20 minutes, with not so good acting and every move predictable, then this is movie for you!

That was it?…

Hand on heart, then I must admit that I had little expectations, if any at all, to “Cyborg Soldier”. I mean, everything here just screams low budget and questionable movie, from storyline to the list of cast talents appearing on the cast list.

The story in “Cyborg Soldier” is about a genetically enhanced person, a cyborg of sorts, who escapes the confines of the research facility where he was created and kept captive. In the outside world he has a run in with a local sheriff and teams up with her to avoid capture by the very same people who created him.

Right, nothing new or overly thrilling about the storyline or plot here. And there most certainly is nothing new to be had here, that haven’t already been seen in other similar Sci-Fi inspired movies.

And as for the acting, well let’s just say that it has Tiffani Thiessen in a leading role, and that needs no further explanation, you know what I am getting to here. And alongside her was actor Rich Franklin, whom I can’t claim to be familiar with at all. Aside from Tiffani Thiessen, then the only familiar faces I saw were Bruce Greenwood and Jim Annan.

It didn’t take long before I found my attention directed to the mobile phone and not on the actual events on the screen, because the movie just didn’t come off as being interesting or captivating in any sense. And scarily enough, then you don’t really have to be paying attention to the screen in order to keep up with the events of the story and how the movie turned out. Yeah, it was that generic and predictable.

The effects, although there isn’t an abundance of them in the movie, were actually adequate enough, and they served their purpose well enough. However, it just wasn’t particularly impressive or memorable, and definitely wasn’t spectacular to really catch your attention.

This wasn’t a memorable movie in any sense, and that I have seen it, I can check it off the list and I know that I will not be watching it a second time around.

Doomsday Prophecy Movie Reviews

Funniest Doomsday of the year

A mysterious clairvoyant provides Brooke (Jewel Staite from ‘Firefly’) and Eric Fox (AJ Buckley, an actor previously unknown to me) with instructions how to save the world from a dark star: they have to find those grumpy looking stone-heads from Easter Island – in Canada, because they don’t have time to travel to the SE Pacific Ocean anymore. To ensure nothing can go wrong, someone scribbled a note on a stone – and hid it in the forest 26,000 years ago. The two heroes are chased by agents who realize their mission doesn’t make any sense, but by then, it’s almost too late to save the world… with a small stick. Seriously.

There are 2 kinds of lousy disaster movies: the bad, boring ones, and the ones which are so bad they become funny. This is a funny one, and I definitely wasn’t bored watching it. I wouldn’t worry about the special effects as much as the other reviewers, it’s TV documentary, not cinema, but you can’t expect more for low budget. Instead, I’d rather wonder why actors don’t read the script first. If you can’t believe any of this actually could happen, that’s a bad start compared to disaster movie classics about earthquakes, climate changes or sinking ships.

Kind of boring.

This movie was not suspenseful or particularly interesting. The CGI was typically unnatural and very fake looking, there were a lot of failures to keep consistent with some of the supposedly scientific phenomenon, and it was a rather see-through plot with no surprises. The only saving grace about this movie was the actors were actually good. I think a lot more could have been done with this movie if it had had a better budget. It was almost like watching one of those semi-interesting science movies they show you in high school. In fact, I’m pretty sure most of those high school science movies had better graphics. Worth watching once if you are bored and have alcohol. Not something you’d turn off half way through out of sheer boredom, but not something I would watch again and/or recommend to others.

Not brilliant by any stretch, but one of SyFy’s more tolerable movies…

I say this as somebody who dislikes a vast majority of SyFy’s movies. Doomsday Prophecy actually did seem interesting in its idea, but I also approached it in trepidation in fear that it would be another Titanic II, Quantum Apocalypse, Alien vs. Hunter, Almighty Thor or 2010: Moby Dick. In my opinion though, although it is far from perfect or even brilliant, Doomsday Prophecy is one of their more tolerable efforts.

There is some cheesy dialogue, some of the supporting characters could have been better developed and some of the effects like with the ground cracking are rather cheap. The story is also uneven for me. The film does start off promisingly and for a while unlike some SyFy movies actually feels as though there is a story and an original one at that plus it is paced reasonably, but it does meander with a silly subplot involving some shady characters and few scenes that feel like filler rather than serving purpose to the story and an ending that feels rather rushed and abrupt.

On the other hand, the scenery is quite good and the editing and photography are an improvement over most SyFy efforts, not looking as slipshod as something like Titanic II, Mega Piranha or Dinocroc vs Supergator. The music is adequate even if nothing stands out as such and the sound is more authentic than some of the bizarre or misplaced sound effects I’ve heard in past SyFy movies. While there are some underdeveloped support characters, the leads are somewhat likable especially the protagonist. The cameos are decent and AJ Buckley is solid, but the best thing about Doomsday Prophecy is easily Jewel Staite, she looks very natural and gives her character a lot of charm and wide-eyed innocence.

All in all, not bad, not good, just a tolerable enough if not exceptional in any shape or form to spend a couple of hours or so with. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Red Faction: Origins Movie Reviews

A decent Sci-Fi from the SyFy Channel…

Not having played any of the Red Faction games, I am not really up to speed about the various factions, the history or the lore of this particular setting. However, watching the movie without this predetermined knowledge, the movie turned out to be a good enough Sci-Fi movie.

The effects in the movie were adequate. This is a SyFy Channel original movie, after all. The effects did what they were supposed to do, and that was it. Don’t expect dazzling multi-million dollar CGI effects here. But still, it worked in the way it was supposed to. However, the costumes and uniforms were really a nice touch, I liked those. And the feeling there was to Mars was alright, although it could have been a bit more detailed and have more atmosphere added to make the audience believe that the movie actually did take place on the red planet.

Storywise, then “Red Faction: Origins” was alright as well, it had a good story that had a continual flow to it, and the storyline was easy to follow and had a good amount of key characters to it without becoming a messy result.

The actors and actresses in the movie were also doing good jobs with their given roles and characters.

All in all, then “Red Faction: Origins” is a good and entertaining movie if you like the Sci-Fi genre. Sure, it is not “Star Wars” or “Star Trek”, but in its own right, it does make for a good addition to the Sci-Fi genre.

“Red Faction: Origins” get a 5 out of 10 rating from me. Just because a movie is based on a computer game doesn’t necessarily make it a bad experience.

First Decent Sy Fy Movie in YEARS

I’ve never played the video game, nor have I ever heard of it (other than the recent TV ads for its latest release) so I can’t write much about how authentic or faithful it is to its roots. This, in a sense, is a good thing, since a movie should be able to stand on its own.

‘Red Faction: Origins’ clearly proves two things. The first is that you don’t need gazillions of dollars to make a halfway decent movie. Sure, it will certainly not be an Oscar contender, and it uses plenty of (sometimes soap-operaish) clichés and plot twists – some of which you will likely see miles ahead – but compared to the usual idiotic mess that Sy Fy scrapes up from the bottom of their production barrel, this is actually pretty good! It has got a fairly interesting and cohesive story that doesn’t violate the basic rules of logic, it has engaging actors/characters, serviceable (if rather low-budget) sets and props, and SFX that range from low- to medium-TV quality. Brian J. Smith is proving himself again to be a reliable performer, Danielle Nicolet is fairly good, and there is a whole host of well- and semi-well-known actors who offer up (mostly) solid work – though the characters as written don’t necessarily offer much to work with.

The other thing this movie proves is that Sy Fy is obviously capable of producing SF B-movies of reasonable quality – which means all the crud they have been pushing unto the long-suffering fans for nearly a decade is not by accident; they must be doing them on purpose. And this thought, frankly, is both depressing and maddening.

If you are an SF fan, ‘Red Faction: Origins’ is well worth watching. Again, not in the same class as ‘Dune’ or some other, more polished efforts, and SyFy sure as heck didn’t invest more money in it than the absolute minimum they could get away with, but it is solid Sunday afternoon/evening entertainment. In short: the first SyFy movie in a decade or so that didn’t send me into screaming fit of rage over SyFy Channel’s industrialized incompetence.

not terrible but not great either..

first I just want to say this movie is not terrible but it is not great either. When I heard the developers say they are going to make a movie and it wont be animated like the dead space movies are, that it is going to be live action, it got my attention.. Then when they say syfy will air it on a Saturday night, that’s when I got a pit in my stomach.. Everyone knows any film that debuts on syfy on Saturday nights is nothing but trash. Still I gave it a shot and a few things bothered me. The Matriarch of the marauders, who is she? her and Alec mason obviously know each other, shes not Sasha because Sasha is dead and obviously not Samonya. The next thing is, for a movie based on a series of games that’s nothing but blowing crap up, the movie is lacking a lot of action scenes. There are a few take downs here and there and a couple hand to hand fights and maybe one shoot out but seriously the movie needed much more action scenes for it to be called red faction.

As for the story, this may contain spoilers here, We are following Jake mason, the son of Alec mason who has joined red faction and is on a personal quest to find his little sister that was kidnapped by a group of white soldiers when they were kids, while on his quest he discovers something much more is at stake than his sister’s well being. They say this movie was suppose to bridge the gap between guerrilla and Armageddon but it doesn’t, it is more of a spin off of the main storyline, if anything we get to see the major villain in Armageddon of who he was in his younger years and why he is so crazy in the game, other than that, has nothing to do with the events following Armageddon. The acting itself was decent, somethings annoyed me that i felt was a waste of time, it the scene where Jake asked the girl to distract the guard by taking off her shirt, I thought that was unnecessary b/c if you were in a life or death situation, would you start making jokes about showing your chest to a trained cold blood killer hoping he would be distracted? The girl herself was just an annoying character all together.

So basically we have a decent story with decent acting with some unnecessary jokes at a very wrong time, not much action scenes, what else is there// oh yes I am sorry I forgot to mention. I thought the environment was awesome in this movie. We only got to see the bad lands and Eos but thought it was pretty cool and the special effects were much better than most syfy movies, not the usual megashark versus robot octopus or whatever the heck that garbage is called. The spaceships exteriors and interiors were pretty cool, the explosions we did have looked nice, I say the special effects they used were about medium range in quality. The red faction uniforms I felt were awesome, i got very excited when I saw Jake mason pull up in a real looking red faction uniform outside of a video game. Well yes, I guess that’s about it, the movie is average at best, not for everyone so I expect to see a lot of people hating it right off the bat

Gamera, Super Monster Movie Reviews

Game(ra) over!

Gamera: Super Monster, the last of the Showa-era Gamera movies, largely comprises of clips from the previous films (although there is also footage from a couple of unrelated animated films as well), with new scenes to tie all the battles together: three super space women, defenders of Earth, befriend a small boy and do battle with an evil woman from the Pirate Spaceship Zanon, who sends several monsters (Gyaos, Ziger, Vira, Jiger, Guiron and Barugon) to wreak havoc on Earth. Of course, giant spinning turtle Gamera is always on hand to give them a jolly good thrashing.

If you’ve already seen all of the previous Gamera movies, then Super Monster will be a crushing bore, Gamera defeating one monster after another ad nauseum before sacrificing his life by smashing into the Zanon spaceship (which looks suspiciously like a Star Destroyer from Star Wars). The nonsense in between the battles sees the three good space women, Kilara, Mitan and Marsha, beaming from one place to another and transforming from human to superhero by performing a stupid series of arm gestures; meanwhile, kid Keiichi releases his pet turtle into a river, plays his Yamaha organ (whilst singing the Gamera March), and is pursued by the evil woman, who hopes that the lad will lead her to his three female friends.

Produced by a struggling Daiei Studios as a last ditch effort to make enough cash to stay afloat, the film is so sloppy in all departments that it proved to be the final nail in the coffin instead.

I love this weirdness!

The first Gamera film in nine years – following Gamera vs. Zigra – this is somehow the strangest of all the movies. That’s an accomplishment.

This entire movie is made up of recycled footage from the entire Gamera film series, as well as Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. This was an attempt to help Daiei get out of financial trouble. Bad news: the film failed to succeed at the box office and Daiei still had to file for bankruptcy six months later.

So they did what the Japanese do best. They kill off Gamera at the end.

Yes, the alien Zanon has come to enslave Earth and even the three Spacewomen, Earth’s defenders, can’t stop him. You know who can? A little kid. As always.

By the way – Mach Fumiake, who portrays the Spacewoman Kilara, was a pro wrestler.

That kid has a connection to Gamera, so he takes us back in time through all the films, as Gamera battles Gyaos, Zigra, Viras, Jiger, Guiron and Barugon before sacrificing himself to save the Earth from Zanon.

Depressing? Yeah. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a Japanese film that ends this way and I end up thinking about it for years.

There is a funny scene where Gamera smashes up a Godzilla billboard. But this is the end of the so-called Showa Gamera era and there would not be another film with the giant turtle for fourteen more years until Gamera: Guardian of the Universe was made.

It’s sad. There’s no Gamera theme song. Only two minutes of new Gamera footage. And yeah – Gamera dying. You don’t need to be depressed. But I still found the YouTube link for you.

My favorite movie of all time (Warning! Review may contain some minor Spoilers)

Many Kaiju fans hate this film for its constant use of stock footage. In fact, most of the special FX were stock footage and the few new ones were really cheap, but if you can see past these flaws, Super Monster becomes a very charming, appealing, and entertaining movie. The plot revolves around a young boy whose pet turtle turns into Gamera, the Super Monster of the title,(or something like that anyway) in order to rid the world of an army of monsters created by the pirate aliens of Zanon who want to take over the world. Gamera is assisted in his mission by his former boy master and a trio of Space Women. Out to stop the heros is an evil space woman named Giloki. Stock footage battle after stock footage battle then ensues.

Ironicly, though, the stock footage adds to the film rather that detracts from it. This is the last of the classic Gamera series and re-showing all of Gamera’s battles is like taking a fun little stroll down memory lane. It is a thrill to remember a great series greatest moments. It kind of plays like a “memories of” special of a famous television series. The few new special effects sequences that were in the film were very well done considering the budget. I personally think that when Gamera arrives for the first time in the movie by flying over the city is the high point of the entire series. The human elements of the story were also very well done and very appealing in a child-like sort of way.

So in conclusion, you will probably hate this movie the first time you see it but if you give it a chance you will learn to like it. I just learned to love it and know it is my favorite movie of all time.

Terror Is a Man Storyline

Synopsis for “Terror Is a Man” (video version is “Blood Creature.”)When a man (William Fitzgerald)(Richard Derr) washes ashore in a lifeboat, he is rescued by Dr. Charles Girard (Francis Lederer) who is working on crossing a man with an animal on an island off the coast of Peru. Walter Perrera (Oscar Keesee) comes in to see how he is and is asked by the doctor if he has seen anything. He says no but he has heard a strange cry in the night that has been heard before. Dr. Girard tells Fitzgerald that they have no radio to contact anyone and that no other survivors have been found. Tiago the boy (Peyton Keesee) brings the man his supper and is told to stay with him. Dr. Girard talks with his wife Frances (Greta Thyssen) outside. She wants to abandon their work and leave, but he insists that he has come too far to give it up. She says she heard the animal crying like a human and knows it escaped. He says he will deal with it tomorrow. As Frances prepares for bed, the creature (Flory Carlos)is seen watching her through the window. Outside, the creature attacks a man sitting by a fire and then a girl who approaches, who screams. This alerts people in the village, who rush out to discover what has happened. Next they are seen leaving in a mass exit. A woman, Selene (Lilia Duran) tries to stop them from leaving along with Tiago (her brother), but to no avail.Later, Tiago visits Fitzgerald, who is up and feeling better, having shaved and dressed. Tiago says no one lives on the island but the doctor and his crew, which leaves Fitzgerald surprised. Wandering around the house, Fitzgerald sees Selene in one of the rooms and says hello. He finds a staircase going down below and ends up outside. Walking around, he finds a deserted village, the remnants of a fire still smoldering. He sees two fresh graves in a small cemetery. As he is walking farther, he hears the creature’s footsteps crunching through the underbrush (the feet are seen). He steps out into a clearing where Dr. Girard, his wife and another man are working. He is cautioned about not stepping into a pit that has been dug and covered over. He is told there are three pits in the area. He is introduced to Frances, who says she is glad he is better. Dr. Girard tells him that meat has been put out for bait to catch an animal and they leave to go back.Back at the house, several toasts are made around a table. Walter eyes Selene as she serves drinks and then coffee. He rises to leave, saying that the animal should be caught soon. Fitzgerald tells Dr. Girard that at first he thought the doctor was a missionary. The doctor says the villagers left the night before because they are superstitious and fear an evil spirit. He explains that they misunderstand the experimental work that he is doing there.Outside that night, Fitzgerald tells Frances that the animal has apparently been caught. She tells him she would like to leave the island and asks for his help. At that moment someone comes, carrying a torch. They go back to the house and Frances goes to her room, refusing to open to her husband. Fitzgerald, intending to talk to the doctor about his wife, is interrupted by Dr. Girard, who tells him how important his work is here and that he came to the secluded island so he would not be bothered. Fitzgerald says he will turn in for the night and goes to his room.Hearing noises outside his window, Fitzgerald investigates. He goes downstairs where he sees the doctor with someone on a gurney covered by a sheet. Frances is assisting. He tells her the operation will not be tonight. When there is a power fluctuation, he sends his wife to see about it. Fitzgerald hides so they will not see him. She tells her husband that she will not be able to help him anymore tonight. He tells her to send for Walter. Fitzgerald has to hide again when the doctor wheels the patient out and into an adjoining room. As Fitzgerald stands near the gurney, the patient (creature) reaches out to grab him but he is just out of reach. Frances closes and locks the cell door, explaining to the patient “I’m sorry.” Later that night, Fitzgerald hears someone outside his door. Frances goes to his room, but changes her mind and returns to her own room. The next day Fitzgerald sees Frances sunning herself by the shore and approaches to talk. He asks about Tiago’s mother and she confirms that her name was Alicia and that she was the first victim of the animal. She tells him how disillusioned she has become in the two years since they came here. She asks for his help and he promises it. Lying down beside her, they kiss. This is observed by Walter.Back at the house, Walter, Fitzgerald and Frances talk as the men have a drink. Frances goes to her room and a drunken Walter talks to Fitzgerald about life on the island. Walter retires to his room as the rain begins. Fitzgerald sees an open door and enters, looking around. It is the doctor’s office. On his desk are books and drawings showing transformations between animals and man. At this point the doctor enters and begins talking about his work. Fitzgerald shows an interest and is invited to attend surgery the next day. As he is going to his room, he is cautioned by Dr. Girard to not take Frances’ claims of fear too seriously. That night the rain draws Frances outside to watch. Selene is seen meeting with her lover, one of the men who assists the doctor. Fitzgerald comes out and makes conversation with Frances. Meanwhile, the doctor with his patient examines x-rays of the skull. Fitzgerald retires to his room but leaves the door open. Frances enters and he closes the door. They embrace and kiss. The doctor calms the patient who cries out in pain.Next morning at breakfast table, Tiago gives Fitzgerald a good luck charm. Frances comes in and Fitzgerald tries to talk to her about what happened between them last night. She says not now. The doctor comes in and says that Fitzgerald will be assisting him in surgery and that Frances won’t be needed. He asks for Walter, whom Fitzgerald tells him is sleeping one off. They go downstairs and the doctor gives the patient a shot. They help it onto the gurney and enter the operating room. As the doctor scrubs up, he tells Fitzgerald to secure the hand straps on the patient. Fitzgerald does so, noticing cat-like whiskers protruding from the bandaged head of the patient. Walter enters and is told to scrub up. Surgery begins as another shot is given the patient. As the surgeon begins his incision a bell rings (this is a gimmick the movie promises when a shocking scene is to begin) After surgery is complete, the doctor is seen stitching up the patient. Fitzgerald goes upstairs and Tiago asks if he still has the good luck charm. He pulls it out and shows it to him. Tiago says he will need it. Fitzgerald heads upstairs and sees Frances coming out of her room dressed for surgery. He tries to talk to her but she brushes him off, saying she must help her husband clean up. Entering the operating room, she offers to clean up so he can leave. The doctor tells Walter that Mrs. Girard will clean up and leaves. Walter approaches Frances, telling her he is interested in helping her escape the island, hinting that he saw her and Fitzgerald on the beach. He tells her Fitzgerald will not help her because he is helping her husband. He comes on to her despite her protests and there is a struggle. The patient reacts when Frances is attacked (knowing Frances has been sympathetic to it). Walter sees the patient struggling and straps it down. Frances tells Walter to never speak to her again and leaves. An angry Walter grabs a stick and beats the patient.Fitzgerald is walking around outside and comes upon Selene, who asks him if he is going to help Mrs. Girard leave. She tells him that she and her brother Tiago want to leave with them. When he asks why they don’t like it there, she tells him there is only death there now. He notices a bruise on her arm and asks who did that to her. She refuses to say, denying that her boyfriend did it. At this point she runs away.Dr. Girard appears on the porch and says he wants to show something to Fitzgerald. They go into his office and he shows drawings of the creature from a black panther to a human form. Fitzgerald tells him there are laws against what he is doing, but Dr. Girard is interested in creating a new species of man who is not hung up like all men before him. He tells him nothing will stop him from continuing his work.In the operating room, the doctor raises the gurney to a standing position. He begins speaking to the patient, trying to get him to say the word “man.” After a few tries, the patient seems to speak a word. When Walter enters the room, the patient grows agitated and the doctor gets a syringe. He tells the two men to go upstairs. Trying to calm his patient, he talks to it. The patient goes crazy, smashing all the equipment and the surgical light. Upstairs Fitzgerald calls for Tiago to bring a torch, which he lights. Walter takes the torch and goes into the operating room. In the struggle he sets the patient’s bandages on fire. Screaming, the patient runs in terror and falls to the ground. The doctor and his wife cover it with a blanket to extinguish the flames. While the doctor tries to attend to the patient, Walter tells Frances that she is crazy as her husband is. He becomes agitated and says he will have to do something before they are all killed. Fitzgerald says what will he do, get drunk? Walter is insulted and smarts off, prompting Fitzgerald to punch him. Falling down, Walter gets up and produces a gun from a drawer and points it at him. Don’t be stupid, Fitzgerald tells him. He says he is not stupid but he will deal with Fitzgerald later. First he is going downstairs. In the operating room, the doctor begins removing more of the bandages. Breaking loose, the creature cuts the power and attacks. Upstairs, Fitzgerald calls for candles. Frances says she has some in her room. In the darkness she has trouble finding them. She finds one and they try to light it in the dark unsuccessfully. She cries and he tries to comfort her, telling her they will escape tomorrow. As he pledges his love, she says she loved her husband for many years and can’t deal with failure. She tells him to leave her alone and goes out into the hall. At this point the creature is seen and Frances screams and goes back into her room. The creature goes down the hall as lightning and thunder are striking outside. Tiago comes in as Frances and Fitzgerald come out into the hall. The doctor emerges from downstairs and tells them Walter is dead. He instructs Tiago to get flashlights and equipment to search for the creature. Girard insists that Fitzgerald help him capture the creature before he gets far. They get the equipment and go out.Frances tells Tiago to help secure doors and windows. Looking out a window, Tiago sees the creature outside. He goes out to look for it. Selene comes out and begins calling for Tiago. The creature approaches her and puts its paw/hand on her mouth. Frances closes her window and comes out to call for Tiago and Selene. As she comes out on the porch, she sees the body of Selene on the ground. Fearful, she enters and closes the doors. Soon the creature appears and she locks herself in her room. The creature breaks down the door and comes in. Frances screams and the two men hear it from outside. They turn back for the house. Seeing Selene on the ground, Fitzgerald examines her and says she is dead. He picks her up and carries her inside. Dr. Girard says to search the rooms. Finding her room empty, he believes the creature has gone out the back way. As the men go back outside, the creature is seen carrying Frances. They follow and separate. Dr. Girard sees the creature carrying Frances and approaches as they come to a cliff side. Fitzgerald sees them and hurries. The doctor tries to talk to the creature, who cries pitifully. Scratching the doctor’s face, the creature picks him up and throws him off the cliff. Fitzgerald fires a shot at the creature, who stumbles off. Wandering along the shoreline, the wounded creature moans and is approached by Tiago who offers his hand. Fitzgerald and Frances run to the beach where Tiago is standing alone. Where is the boat, Fitzgerald asks. Tiago tells him it is gone. Fitzgerald tells Frances it will soon be daylight as they walk along the beach.

Terror Is a Man Movie Reviews

Good little thriller

This is a Philippine lensed remake of the HG Wells Island of Doctor Moreau. This is a good little film that has some thrills and chills but which doesn’t hold a candle to the best version of the tale, The Island of Lost Souls. The plot has a man coming to Blood Island (this is actually weirdly related to the later Blood Island films -such as Mad Doctor of Blood Island and Beast of Blood) where a mad doctor is turning animals into people. While not as large scale as Lost Souls, there isn’t a whole bestiary really just one guy, the film does have some nice beasties. I think on some level the film has survived because the film has a bell that rings to warn people of sensitive disposition that something terrible is about to happen. Personally I think it’s a dumb idea that kills some of the suspense, but at the same time you do remember the film because of the gimmick. Worth a look.

Surprisingly good for a movie that had a budget of $97.50.

“Terror is a Man” is a very, very low-budget film but despite this it’s still a pretty good version of the classic H.G. Wells story “The Island of Lost Souls”. So, despite being made in the Philippines, having a MOSTLY unknown cast and a relatively cheesy creature, the film was deftly made and featured a nice appearance by Francis Lederer as the mad doctor.

The film begins with a man in a lifeboat washing up on the shores of a mostly deserted island in the Pacific. He soon learns that only about a half dozen people live there and they all work for a weirdo doctor who is doing weird experiments. What, exactly, this experiment is doesn’t become apparent until later, when you learn the crazy guy is trying to ‘evolve’ creatures into human form. What this really means are 50 or more surgeries that cause excruciating pain for the poor creature–all in the name of ‘science’.

Unlike the original tale, there is only the one creature and there’s a romance tossed in to boot. But, good suspense, acting and a credible explanation for why you don’t see much of the creature all work to make a spooky and worthy horror film.

By the way, I did have one question that I thought of while watching the film. If the folks have been on this island for two years, how does the Doctor’s wife have a perm?!

Terror Is a Man was a fascinating Drive-In ’50s fare from the Philippines

Just discovered this Philippine(My parents’ native country)-made horror movie here on IMDb as linked from Hulu. Despite the bland romantic trappings between the triangle of Francis Lederer, Richard Derr, and the buxom blonde from Denmark named Greta Thyssen, this was a pretty effective chiller during the last 30 minutes as effectively visualized by Gerardo de Leon with I’m sure help from producer Eddie Romero. There’s also some nice work from the natives like Oscar Keesee as the villain, his son Peyton as the innocent boy, and stunning Lilia Duran as the other hired help. And then there’s the creature played by Flory Carlos who spends most of the movie wrapped in bandages. His mummy-like performance gets effective treatment due to the music by Ariston Avelino. May be most effective to maybe to those 12 and under who haven’t seen anything gory yet. Certainly the “buzzer” that warns of a 15-second “surgery” scene was nothing that shocked my senses! So on that note, Terror Is a Man is worth a look for fans of old-fashioned Drive-In fare.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Movie Reviews

Fantastic boredom

Normally I should have expect nothing less from movie based video games but this case I have to do it.

And there is not much to say about this game from Marvel Fantastic Four.

The game is based off the movie Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer the sequel to the 2005 Fantastic Four motion picture based off the Marvel Comics characters Reed Richards AKA Mr.Fantastic, Susan Storm AKA Invincible Woman, Her brother Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch and Ben Grimm AKA The Thing.

However after the first level you will become so bored and this is not a lie I’m selling.

Yes I only played the game on the Playstation 2 but it was enough to say clear away from the game on other platforms.

The style of the game feels like a Role Playing game like the X-Men Legends games which I haven’t played yet where you can play as anyone of the Fantastic Four

But that being said the game just get boring after the first level and after that just turn the game it just don’t have anything to appeal you long enough to even want to play it.

The controls are like slugs, the graphics are just plain at best the camera zoom so far away that you can’t see the action that take place in the game so often you relay on good luck the voice acting is just uninspiring the actors don’t feel like they should and the game play is just awful

Just do yourself a favor and avoid this game no matter how Fantastic cheap it is.

I give Fantastic Four Rise Of The Silver Surfer an 3 out of 10

Great game

This a great game, it’s old, but it’s still fun to play (My opinion)

worst sequel

So if you have just read my review of the previous game I always said that that game is underrated but not even its sequel and together with the film it is based on it is one of the worst superhero games Then this game does all the wrong things i.e. It doesn’t have the same onething that the first game had But why does it change a lot of all the things it had Yet in the three spider-man games they were attracted by Sam Laini’s films let’s not change all the things To say the second II and third have changed compared to the first but no very much has for example that there was no longer ifyou fall down you die but with this Fantastic 4 game they have everything changes for example there is no longer that playability for two players why remove it and then if the graphics of the first one were not as good as graphics but this second one is much worse then it is because there are only three bosses in the other gamethere were more Bosses to face It’s incredible this video game does the same thing as polymer clay i.e. Making everything worse please just play the first game and throw this sequel somewhere else to conclude rating 4.
