Wedding Bells Storyline

In Manhattan, fashion designer Molly Quinn and executive chef Nick Turner were once set up by their respective best friends, couple Amy and James, but there were no romantic sparks largely in their differences. Molly’s style is classic and timeless, while Nick’s is modern and trendy. While Nick’s style of cooking is experimenting with flavor combinations in putting together the perfect bite of food, Molly is theoretically allergic to “chef foam”, she believing the two major food groups being ranch dressing and bacon, both in large quantities. Even if there were sparks, they would both probably have denied it in being afraid of commitment, albeit each for different reasons. Now in being maid of honor and best man for Amy and James, Molly and Nick have to band together to figure out a way for the wedding to happen after Amy’s wealthy parents, who were to pay for the wedding, are hit with a financial crisis. Although a stretch, an alternate venue is proposed in the inn in the Berkshires owned by Nick’s father, Charlie Turner. The many problems with it even as a suggestion are that: the inn has been closed ever since Nick’s mother, Charlie’s wife Clarissa passed away years ago, it having gone into a state of disrepair over time; the country setting does not mesh with Amy’s urban sensibilities; and arguably most importantly, Nick and Charlie have long not been on speaking terms in the aftermath of Clarissa’s passing. In Nick making the request regardless for his friend, Charlie does agree to let them use the inn. In the process, Molly and Nick have to handle most of the wedding planning on a shoestring as Amy and James attend to family finance business. In Molly and Nick trying to find a common ground around the style and the food for the wedding, the collective five of Molly, Nick, Amy, James and Charlie may truly come to an understand of the meaning of love, both in the familial sense as well as the romantic sense, with Molly and Nick only if they are open to allowing themselves to feel love.—Huggo

Charming bells

2016 was a hit and miss year for Hallmark, likewise with all the subsequent years too. With winners such as ‘Love in Paradise’, ‘Love on the Sidelines’, ‘Tulips in Spring’, ‘Summer Villa’ and ‘Journey Back to Christmas’. But also some duds such as ‘Ms Matched’, ‘Unleashing Mr Darcy’, ‘Dater’s Handbook’, ‘The Convenient Groom’ and ‘A December Bride’. Am not always a fan of Danica McKellar, who tends to be typecast and whose acting tends to be more of the same to a varying degree.

Despite having initial issues with her character, she does come off well here and ‘Wedding Bells’ comes off well as an overall film. Not one of the very best 2016 Hallmark films, but closer to being one of the winners than one of the duds and for me it is one of the better 2016 June Weddings films easily (which was not a good batch on the whole that year). ‘Wedding Bells’ may not be a great film and has a few issues, but it also has a lot of worthwhile things executed well.

Starting off with what doesn’t quite come off, McKellar’s character does take time to warm to with the whining in the early stages going overboard.

Like a lot of Hallmark films, the ending is too pat. Did feel as well that the secondary relationship was too much of a mismatch.

Once her character became more interesting and likeable, McKellar fully relaxes and gives a very winning performance full of charm and energy. Kavan Smith matches her very well and his performance is likeable and easy going, nothing looking stiff or forced. Their chemistry always looks natural and genuine and didn’t have any real problem with how it was written and developed. The supporting cast are solid and while they are cliched the characters weren’t annoyances or bores, with the only reservations being with McKellar’s early on.

Furthermore, ‘Wedding Bells’ looks good with lovely scenery and the music doesn’t distract tonally or in placement. The script isn’t cheesy or schmaltzy and flows well, while the story even though very formulaic is very sweet (without being overly so) and light hearted with a nice energy going on.

Concluding, not great but good and one of the few above average 2016 June Weddings films. 7/10.

It’s worth watching

In the very beginning of the story the lead man who is a chef, double dip’s a French fry into ranch dressing which was a turn off for me also I really did not care for his personality but when the story progressed he did better and I wanted to watch it anyway. I actually enjoyed his father’s character (Bruce Boxieitner) in the movie and that guy looks pretty darn good for his age. (Danica) did great with her heart felt acting. It’s worth watching.

Lovely Danica McKellar film

A best man and a bridesmaid who seemingly have nothing in common are given the task of planning their friends wedding, and of course sparks start to fly in this fun Hallmark film.

I thought this was great, with the ever lovely Danica McKellar on good form, and well matched by Kavan Smith.

With some lovely themes and moments, this is worth a watch.

Good movie

There are several Hallmark actors who are always on my must watch list and Andrew W. Walker is one of them.

This was a decent film. Well cast, good script, engaging stories. I really enjoyed it.

My advice – well worth watching.

Valentine in the Vineyard Storyline

Frankie Baldwin and Nate DeLuca have been able to bridge the Baldwin/DeLuca family feud – the families the major players in the grape growing and wine making business in St. Madeleine, California – by not only making a success of Sorrento in their first full season, their winery where Frankie is in charge of the wine making and Nate the grape growing, but by falling in love. In that love, Frankie and Nate, who are opposites in working by intuition and by science respectively, are trying to understand the other better both for professional and personal reasons. Without telling the other, Frankie has gone back to college to take her final course needed to graduate, that class being biochemistry, while Nate and his youngest brother Gabe DeLuca are taking an organic gardening class to understand the art rather than science of gardening. Also in that love, the two get engaged despite the pressures they are facing in just having expanded Sorrento with the upcoming season even more more important in that needed success to pay off their debt. But they learn that they won’t be the first two to bridge the Baldwin/DeLuca divide, as her cousin Lexi Moreau and his brother Marco DeLuca announce before Frankie and Nate are able to do so that they too have just gotten engaged, and due to circumstances are planning to get married on Valentine’s Day in four weeks. As such, Frankie and Nate decide to postpone the announcement of their engagement until after Valentine’s to give Lexi and Marco due time to bask in their impending marriage. But in helping Lexi and Marco plan their wedding, Frankie and Nate may believe that the cosmos are telling them that they are not meant to be together as one personal or professional issue after another seems to dog them.—Huggo

Frankiie is a little too neurotic. After a while it is more annoying than funny.

This miscommunications were funny at times and cliche at other times.

There were some funny lines. “Reign of terriers.” That whole sequence brought out some lol’s even though some of the puns were bad too.

There are multiple romantic relationships either going on or springing up.

I like Rachael Leigh Cook and Brandon Penny together.

The story is a little thin but I don’t think it’s intended to be anything complicated.

I have to admit there was an element of suspense for the ending. I really wasn’t sure how it was going to go.

My marital valentine

‘Valentine in the Vineyard’ is the third film in the ‘Into the Vineyard’ trilogy, after ‘Autumn in the Vineyard’ and ‘Summer in the Vineyard’. It is also the first of the 2019 Countdown to Valentines Day films, a very short series of films this year, followed by ‘The Story of Us’ and ‘Love Romance and Chocolate’. Of the other two ‘Into the Vineyard’ films, ‘Autumn’ is the best one and that was pretty good, while ‘Summer’ disappointed while still being watchable enough.

As far as the ‘Into the Vineyard’ films go, ‘Valentine in the Vineyard’ is in the middle. Better than ‘Summer’ but not as good as ‘Autumn’, with strong flashes of what was good about ‘Autumn’ but also with flashes of what disappointed about ‘Summer’. Of the three 2019 Countdown to Valentine’s Day films, it is second best after ‘Love Romance and Chocolate’. ‘Valentine in the Vineyard’ is not great or flawless, but it’s enjoyable enough if not too much is expected. It is my feeling though that one does have to see the previous two films beforehand to save any confusion.

Will agree that the indecision and constant flip flopping of decision making was a bit too much and annoying, which makes one frustrated by the characters and motivations at points. It also tries to do a little too much in the plot, on paper it does sound thin structurally but the double wedding and double engagement sees a good deal going on and it started feeling on the busy side.

It doesn’t always flow in the dialogue and some of the sentiment could have been toned down. While Rachael Leigh Cook does fine, her character is a bit too neurotic this time.

However, there is a lot to like. Cook and Brendan Penny are still very engaging and bring a lot of charm and heart to their roles, never looking uncomfortable or bored. Their chemistry is sweet and never felt forced. The supporting cast are good as well. The characters could have had more dimension but they are not as one-dimensional as they are in ‘Summer’. The direction is never hyperactive but also not pedestrian.

The vineyard setting is beautiful and made the most of, the scenery in general is beautiful and shot well. The music doesn’t overbear or intrude, things that can happen in Hallmark films. The script isn’t perfect, but it is sincere, has playful moments and doesn’t take itself overly seriously. The story is warm-hearted and charming, if on the busy end of things, with some nice energy, and the ending is less predictable than most endings for Hallmark films.

Overall, decent end to the trilogy. 6/10.

Surprisingly good

“Valentine in the Vineyard” is apparently the third film in a trilogy in which Rachel Leigh Cook and Brendan Penny as Frankie and Nate, rival vintners who have fallen in love. I suppose at one point they were competitive yet by now the two of them have purchased a vineyard and are growing their own grapes. Cook is an emotive actress with good emotional range for a woman stressed by the big loan she has taken out. Penny is equally talented and the two of them make a good onscreen couple. It helps that the script is pensive for a movie like this and defies your expectations.

The proposal takes place at the very beginning simultaneous with Frankie’s sister announcing her engagement. Frankie and Nate decide to hide their engagement from everyone, including themselves. As the film progresses, each of them realizes he may not be ready for the wedding and each comes up with a reason to postpone. This is a realistic portrayal of the doubt many people have when getting married. In spite of this, it becomes clear this couple loves each other. They decide to learn the other person’s perspective about how to grow grapes. He takes a class with a holistic gardner and she decides to complete her undergraduate science degree. I suppose in an earlier film these character traits were established.

Each person uses knowledge from the program she completed to devise a manner of saving the grapes from frost. The strategy they come up with, which I won’t spoil ties in nicely to the “education” scenes. I like this idea because it brings these otherwise out of place scenes into the focus of the main narrative. This is a love story after all not a fish out of water comedy.

Even the ending, which would be cheesy in any other movie, kind of works. Frankie and Nate get married using the leftovers from her sister’s wedding to Nate’s brother (that’s really cheesy, isn’t it?)

The vineyard gets some nice panoramic shots. It is situated in a valley with a large manor at its center. The couple has a guard lama who we see sometimes standing next to them. I believe Frankie keeps it. I enjoyed seeing her feed the lama grapes. Hallmark films aren’t usually quirky like that. It’s a nice touch. The film as a whole is nothing spectacular but very well done for the genre.

May-December for Mommy

Greetings again from the darkness. You’d be forgiven, and I ask for that same forgiveness, if a cringey look of pain comes across the face every time a new Rom-Com is announced. Most in this genre are filled with lame dialogue and absurd love connections. Cautious hope springs when writer-director Michael Showalter (THE BIG SICK, 2017) and co-writer Jennifer Westfeldt (FRIENDS WITH KIDS, 2017) adapt the 2017 novel by Robinne Lee. Mr. Showalter, especially, has proven his approach leans into sensitivity, rather than over-cooked romanticism.

Oscar winner Anne Hathaway stars as Solene, a recently divorced mother celebrating her 40th birthday. She owns an art gallery in ultra-hip Silver Lake, and has a close relationship with her teenage daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin). When her ex (Reid Scott) breaks yet another commitment, Solene agrees to take Solene and her friends to the Coachella Music Festival. The meet-cute occurs as Solene searches for a bathroom and ends up meeting Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), a 24-year-old pop star who performs with a popular boy band called August Moon.

The two make goo-goo eyes at each other, and after Hayes sings a song just for Solene, a whirlwind romance begins … against all the good judgment she can muster. Great sandwiches, art purchases, and a pricey watch left behind all play a role in the development of this relationship. Soon, Solene is dropping Izzy at Summer Camp and hopping a private jet to join Hayes (a Harry Styles stand-in) for the European leg of August Moon’s tour. It’s all a bit predictable and expected, however Hathaway and Galitzine are strong enough to prevent the film from sinking into muck.

As you would guess, fame and celebrity are not an easy adjustment for a grounded single mom, no matter how much she enjoys the May-December benefits. Contrary to what we hear these days, going viral is not for everyone, and the complications are almost too much for Solene. To his credit, Hayes is not a typical twenty-something icon, and he works to figure out a relationship infinitely more complex than the nightly groupies that surround him and his bandmates.

Many will dwell on the age discrepancy between Solene and Hayes, but what elevates this one is the reality of the choices faced by parents – their own fun versus what’s best for their children. Being called Yoko 2.0 is a brilliant take by the writer, but it’s a painful moment for an good-hearted mom. Of course, some of the dialogue here does qualify as rom-com drivel, and the him vs her lipstick battles are distracting, but for the most part, the actors and Showalter keep us interested in the human aspects of a tangled web.

Surprisingly emotional and sexy

I saw this last night at the Atlanta Film Festival alongside a friend who is also in her 40s. We went into it calling it “the Harry Styles fanfiction movie” and knowing it was going to be a bit of a fantastical and sexy romp, but we both agreed at the end that we were surprised at how emotional we got watching it. I guess I shouldn’t actually be surprised at this knowing that Jennifer Westfeldt was one of the writers, since I’m a huge fan of how she portrays women and relationships. (Kissing Jessica Stein is one of my major cultural touchstone movies.) I’m also a big Michael Showalter fan, but had never really associated him with telling this kind of story before. He gave a Director Q&A after, and I really appreciated hearing him talk about the process of making this, especially with regards to not making Hayes or the idea of being in a boy band a “joke” or something to poke fun at.

The best part of this movie is the fact that it shows something we rarely see on screen: the idea of a woman in her 40s being found intriguing, sexy, and desirable, and the object of pursuit by a younger, attractive man. The way that it achieves this is nothing new to movies – love at first sight, Solene being the only woman he can think about, and that she stirred something in him that no one else can. This is a common mechanism in female fanastical romances (see also: Fifty Shades of Grey) because, well, it’s one of the biggest fantasies we all have, especially for heterosexual women. (Let’s hope that it doesn’t spawn an epidemic of middle-aged women “accidentally” breaking into band trailers at music festivals.) But it does, at its core, speak to a fantasy that anyone who wants to be loved has: that we will be seen for who we are, not for our familial or life situation, the wrinkles on our face, or the birthdate on our driver’s license.

The other unique thing that the movie portrays is the idea of men being emotionally vulnerable. The way that you see Hayes falling for Solene and expressing his feelings about her is not something you see very often with male leads. Again, this may be a bit of a heterosexual female fantasy, but I think it comes at a time when society is beginning to be more accepting and understanding of the need for men to be able to express their emotions. If you want to know why so many women love The Notebook (another fantastical romance), think about how you see Ryan Gosling’s character show just how emotionally attached he is to Rachel McAdams’s character. You don’t see this in that many movies, but when you do, there’s a very good chance that women love it.

The film also makes good points about the hypocrisy of society with how Hayes and Solene’s relationship is treated, how no one bats an eyelash when male celebrities date women 10, 20, even 50 years younger than they are (ahem, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino), but the idea of a woman dating a younger man is scandalous. This is a point made by Annie Mumolo, who I always love to see on screen, but who is regrettably underutilized here as the best friend character. There is definitely a feminist undercurrent to the movie, including some really cute lines made by Solene’s daughter, but it’s doesn’t hit you over the head with it.

Although there are some areas I would’ve liked to have been handled better, such as the scene where there’s tension with the other band members, overall it’s a sweet and emotional movie that gives us something I think all women would agree that we want: recognition that we are more than just our age.

The idea of you

I could not stop comparing it to the book/audio book!

The good stuff: Nicholas Galitzine sang beautifully, the music was awesome! Guard down and Closer were 2 of my favorites, although I wish there was a “7 minutes” or “S” , from the original story.

It was quite funny, especially because the book does not really have a romcom vibe, so that was a nice surprise.

And as everyone says, the chemistry between Hayes and Solene was there.

The ending was satisfying, hopeful

The not so good stuff: I’m not sure Anne was the best casting for Solene unfortunately, despite popular opinion.

There were changes ( of course as in any book to film adaptation) to the original story that took away from the original characters, and I felt it was unnecessary.

This did not need to be Rated R, it is nowhere near as steamy as the book, in terms of graphic sexuality or nudity.

So many editing mistakes.

Was not that bad a movie, but I had more enjoyment picking the editing mistakes during the show.. Lets see how many you find… I will give you one to start the ball rolling…1:20 into the movie, approaching front door of gallery. The sign is on the outside of the door and is NOT mounted properly…..1:23 into the movie and the gallery sign is now on the inside of the door….4:23 the sign on the outside of the door in now mounted properly.and at 4:25 the sign on the inside of the door is now gone…. now,… see how many you can find and let me know if you find more than 27…that is how many I found…. have fun.

Boring

Another day and another boring Reel One Entertainment TV movie. I would say that movie is technically mostly all right, but it was immersion killed by stupid background synth pop music. Just to be clear, not whole movie was ruined by it, but parts. I don’t understand why ROE started to push it in 2023 season. What is going on with their signature tracks? And if you ask me what are they signature tracks – probably the best example is “Sweet as Pie” movie were I think is probably every single one of them, and they actually lifted movie from mediocrity at least for me. This is actually one thing I like about ROE – their signature tracks are way better than Hallmark one, their main competitor.

The main issue with the movie is the miscast main lead Alexia Fast. With some script changes and Marlie Collins as the lead, movie could be at least passable. The good news is that I see that Marlie Collins is finally a lead not in one, but two upcoming ROE TV movies. The first big issue with Alexia Fast is her high pitched voice so she sounds like a child. It’s really annoying, but it gets worse because her character Laura is non-relatable because how obnoxious (my way or highway) she is. But maybe that was a master plan by producers – Laura is obnoxious and her voice just amplify it. Okay, I’ll bait, and say it is indeed great plan but here is the problem – how to root for Shane when he’s not himself mostly, and Stacy and Jenson have limited on screen time, and they are supporting cast anyway? So basically you watch a movie, you don’t care for leads because they are not relatable, there is no chemistry between them obviously and you just get bored especially because again there is modern art.

To save yourself a misery watch a trailer because it’s ROE so you’ll see most of the movie compressed in just 2:23 minutes.

Three Dates to Forever – more than three reasons to watch

Three Dates to Forever is a fun & light-hearted romantic comedy. Chelsea Gilson is delightful and perfectly cast as the skeptical radio host Maddie Mackenzi who is pressured by her radio audience into proving the dating app ‘Triple Date’ is a con. Adam Huss is just right as the aloof and very laid-back Triple Date CEO, John Reed, who must secure financing to keep his product launch on track. Together they agree to test the app’s success in finding their perfect mates in ‘three dates or less’. Jack Pearson is very likeable as Kevin, Maddie’s first mystery date. Jessica Gillespie does a nice job as Maddie’s bubbly radio producer. Overall: this movie feels fresh and is very amusing. Is the movie predictable? Of course. Does that ruin the move? Of course not. This is exactly what we tune in for. This movie is worth your time and a bowl of popcorn.

Too safe and predictable

Another day and another barely passable Reel One Entertainment TV movie. I don’t know why, but for 2023 season, Reel One and their co-producing partners just hyper produce TV movies. That means they hire for lead roles basically anybody, and obviously writing and directing have to suffer, too. The good news, this movie doesn’t suffer from obvious technical issues – only few minor lightning issues, but other than that… I’m honestly positively shocked as this is The Asylum co-produced movie.

This movie doesn’t have anything badly done which would drag it to the unwatchable / skip category. For example I never watched Chelsea Gilson and Adam Huss, and I would say they were all right.

Unfortunately, on the flip side, the writing is weak – it’s predictable, too safe (how many times we have to watch about revolutionary relationship app?), obligatory food tropes, and above all, I simply didn’t buy romance between Maddie and John (opposites attract trope).

In the end of day, it’s not a bad movie, but Reel One has (much) better TV movies in their catalog – watch if you have nothing else, and to kill some free time.

And don’t watch trailer if you plan to watch movie as this is ROE’s one and it shows everything.

We enjoyed it.

Three Dates to Forever is a fun movie with a little twist on the “boy meets girl” movie.

The story line moves along at a good pace, keeping the viewer interested throughout.

It’s impossible not to like the lead actress, Chelsea Gilson. She has a warm spirit and a smile that draws you to her. She played her role as the radio host well. Totally believable.

The main actor, Adam Huss, is a good choice for the genius tech geek that hasn’t been able to find the right girl. But it’s his sincere desire to help others find happiness that makes us like him so much.

Jack Pearson, plays Kevin, the incredibly loveable love interest. We were rooting for him the whole time. He came across as such a sweet guy.

Jessica Gillespie was also very likeable in her role and cute as can be in those red glasses! She and Chelsea made a cute team.

This is a cute film that pulls you in right at the start. We love family friendly movies and have recommended this one to several friends.

Cupids on Beacon Street Storyline

As the copy editor at established publishing house, Romantic Reads, Eve loves her job – even though she does not actually believe in true love or the theory of romance. At first it is very apparent that she and Jake are complete opposites, but they soon find themselves becoming closer and ultimately, a very unexpected couple – one potentially worthy of a romance novel.

Great entertainment.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Actors and storyline were great. OK the usual sort of plot but done better than in many other instances. Can I feel a series coming on? That would be fun. Worth viewing.

Loved this movie.

The actors, the story, were all very good. It had a nice build up to the characters romance instead of most of these type of movies where they are instantly in love. Very enjoyable and upbeat.

Passionless Couple on Beacon St.

I thought it was miscast, in that most of the actors were the wrong ages for the characters they were portraying, except for the romance novelist couple. The writing could have been a bit more dynamic also, as many of the characters came of as after flat. The main character could have had more of a back story besides her parents getting divorced. She doesn’t mention any former boyfriend, or current boyfriend, at the beginning of the film.

The marriage counselor doesn’t tell you anything except he was engaged but it didn’t work out. Eve’s girlfriend at the publishing company doesnt bring up much about what she knows about Eve’s past dating life. The publisher or Senior Editor seems rather indifferent to things, except to call about the rewrite that Eve is working on.

It almost seems like nobody talks to anybody, except for what you see depicted on screen.

It’s nice to see the couple get together at the end, but it didn’t seem to resemble real life, in that nobody was very passionate, about very much, and was just going thru the motions.

Don’t know if filming in the early part of the COVID pandemic had much the lack of passion, but perhaps it could have.

“Surf all your life. Just don’t be a surfer all your life.”

This story opens 20 years into the “future”, where one surfer is regaling another with the tale of Nick (Richard Joseph Paul, “Oblivion” 1 and 2), an amiable dude who could clearly aspire to a lot, although he’s currently content with his lot in life. He catches the eye of Allie (Danielle von Zerneck, “My Science Project”), another serious sort who is otherwise tired of dating surfers. The trouble? They belong to different warring factions in the Southern California surfing community, “Vals” and “Lokes”. Keith Coogan (“Adventures in Babysitting”) plays Andy, Allies’ sweet natured, naive cousin from the sticks.

Overall, “Under the Boardwalk” is nothing special, but it entertains in capable enough fashion, thanks to director Fritz Kiersch (“Children of the Corn” ’84) and a talented crew including cinematographer Don Burgess (“Forrest Gump”). The “Romeo and Juliet” inspired story allows for a fair amount of predictability, yet the movie remains appealing. It gets by thanks to its combination of comedy and drama, and its well chosen cast. The waves, of course, are out of sight, and the surfing sequences are very well executed. The score is by David Kitay (“Clueless”), and the soundtrack features an eclectic and catchy assortment of pop and rock, including an appearance by Surf Punks.

The young cast is quite engaging. Also putting in appearances are Roxana Zal (“River’s Edge”), Stuart Fratkin (“Teen Wolf Too”), Steve Monarque (‘Friday the 13th: The Series’), Hunter von Leer (“Halloween II” ’81), Brian Wimmer (‘China Beach’), Christopher Rydell (“Trauma”), Wallace Langham (‘CSI’), Elizabeth Kaitan (“Silent Night, Deadly Night 2”), Greta Blackburn (“Chained Heat”), Kurt Fuller (“No Holds Barred”), and Paul Carr (“The Bat People”). How nice it is to see the always welcome Dick Miller, in a small role as an official, and what a hoot to see Sonny Bono in a couple of scenes as an “ancient” surfer. Tracey Walter once again steals every scene he’s in, playing a philosophical beach bum who calls to mind his similar role in “Repo Man”. He even croons “Amazing Grace” at one point!

This probably wouldn’t have nearly as much resonance for viewers who aren’t part of the culture depicted here (certainly, there’s a ton of So Cal jargon tossed around), yet it does have some charm.

I worked as an extra on this movie

…and frankly, I’m amazed at how highly it’s rated by the few IMDB users who have seen it. But then despite playing an unnamed surfer in the film, I don’t have much interest in surfing or surf movies.

The plot is very pedestrian, alternating between a surfing competition and light romance. Pretty bland fare. During filming (under the working title “Wipeout”) most of the crew knew they were creating bad cinema.

Note: the day shots were filmed in Seal Beach, and the night shots were filmed in Manhattan Beach, although they are supposed to be the same place in the film.

Wait…it gets better. (spoilers)

Is it really so hard to write a sports-themed adventure screenplay without the trite Romeo and Juliet cliché? Think of Under the Boardwalk as a surf-styled variation of the late 80s skate film, Thrashin’. (In fact, Brett Marx, who the curly blonde, Marone, was in Thrashin’). The film is told in flashback format as a surfer “from the future” narrates to his aquatic buddy the tale of the greatest surfer their beach has ever known. Much of the film concerns the conflict between some local surfers and some guys from the Valley (get a load of Stuart Fratkin’s stone cold mulletude) which gets considerably worse as Nick, the pacifist cutie from the Valley, falls in love with the sister of crude local surfer, Reef. Needless to say, you should expect a final surf-off-for-her-love-and-his-reputation finale.

Meanwhile, Nick has to make a decision about his future and whether he’ll accept a scholarship to attend Stanford or whether he’ll stay on the beach, get sponsored, and be what his friends may consider a true surfer-for-life.

The movie is the ultimate Hollywood perversion of surfers, their sport, and their culture, which is especially evident as the writers try to inject as much pseudo-surfing slang in the conversations between the Valleys and the locals (see the seen where Andy asks Reef’s sisters to translate the conversation between he and his friends). And this alone may be reason enough to turn the viewer off.

However, as the film continues, despite a lack of much substantive story development, the film does become more entertaining. And, aside from the terribly clichéd plot and even more ridiculous dialog, there are many things here that 80s fans might enjoy purely for the atmosphere and the somewhat disconnected situations that the characters become involved in. For one thing, it’s loaded with familiar b-movie 80s regulars like Kieth Coogan, Wally Ward, the gorgeous Chris Rydell, Marx, Fritkin, Tracey Walter (paying homage to his philosophical character of ‘Repo Man’), Dick Miller, and others. I particularly enjoyed the novelties of the party sequence (with a surfboard-styled bull ride that looked like a lot of fun and an excellent band with a guitar shaped from a skateboard!). I also liked Roxana Zal’s spunky character, Gitch, one of the surfers with the most impressive skills. And the little running gags throughout the film.

It is really the minor things that make Under the Boardwalk worth trying for you 80s fans out there.

Could have been better

First the good points-good acting from Salman Khan,good picturesque cinematography,nice songs …totally unexpected ending. Now the bad…the screenplay doesn’t grab,on screen chemistry between the lead pairs is not very convincing.

The pacing of the film could have been better and as it is a serious kind of subject …it doesn’t give much hope for future serious Priyadarshan films a la Viraasat.Especially considering the Box office success of all his comedies.

The film is worth a look if you are looking for a non stereotypical role from lover boy Salman.

For: Kareena & Romania; Against: Melodrama & Poor chemistry

Plot Outline: Anand (Salman) is admitted to an asylum where Dr. Tanvi (Kareena), her father (Om Puri) & Dr. Sunil (Jackie Shroff) are psychiatrists. Tanvi learns of Anand’s tragic past of his lover Maya’s (Rimi Sen) death and the murder charge on him. Whilst helping his recovery, the two fall in love against the wishes of her father. The Official Website calls it “A passionate love story, twisted by fate at its imaginative best”.

Comment: The story traces its lineage to Hollywood’s ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ which Priyadarshan has portrayed in ‘Thalavattam’ (Malayalam) and ‘Kyon Ki’. Although some called it a comedy, I would call it a tragedy. Jokes involving the mentally challenged are history. The melodramatic climax actually leaves the viewer nauseating. Character development is poor with lead pair’s love and chemistry hardly noticeable.

Salman is bearable and Kareena though plump looks adorable in sarees. Om Purie, Jackie Shroff and Rimi are passable. Sunil Shetty’s cameo was avoidable. Of the songs, ‘Kyon ki itna pyar’ and ‘Dil Keh Raha Hai’ are worthy. Priyadarshan could rather stick to comedies like Hungama or Garam Masala for better BO success.

Kyunki it doesn’t involve the viewer totally

So, this one from Mr. Priyadarshan is not going to make you laugh. The film shot well in the verdurous landscape of The Nilgiris, revolves around a sanatorium run by a gruff ex-army doctor Khurana (Om Puri), who along with his daughter Tanvi (Kareena Kapoor)manage the place. Anand (Salman Khan)is the new patient that has been admitted in this sanatorium. He is in this condition because of the shock when he realized that he had accidentally caused his fiancée’s death by the way of a prank. It also turns that a doctor in the sanatorium, Sunil (Jackie Shroff) is an old acquaintance of this new patient. The movie revolves around how Anand, with the efforts of docs Tanvi and Sunil is brought back to his state of normalcy or sanity. But, there is a slight twist towards the end which somehow ands up salvaging the otherwise humdrum script.

The movie moves pretty sluggishly in the first half. The sequences where Anand is brought to the sanatorium and his subsequent mischiefs, the association with the other inmates, could have been tightly edited and packed, but unfortunately, they aren’t. Similarly, Anand’s track with his love Maya (Rimi Sen) isn’t developed strongly so as to involve the average viewer totally. It is only when the viewer begins to feel that the movie is going to come to a predictable end that there is some redemption of sorts by the film maker.

Salman Khan’s performance is unexceptional. There isn’t a major difference in his performance when he is playing an ‘insane’ person and when he is ‘normal’. Kareena Kapoor is good in her role. Om Puri plays the brusque dad cum sanatorium boss very well. Jackie Shroff is very good in his part. Even after all these years he proves that he can deliver the goods with ease. Rimi Sen is only in a brief role but she looked good in it. Sunil Shetty is in a minuscule role. The others like Atul Parchure, Arun Bakshi, Asrani, Manoj Joshi, Nagesh Bhosle, Javed Khan have supported the main cast well.

The Memory Book Storyline

Budding photographer Chloe (Ory) comes from a family of failed romances. At a local flea market, she stumbles upon an old photo album from the 1970s, chronicling the ideal romance of a happy couple (Hindle and Barbeau). Unable to find her own “true love,” she sets out to find the couple in the album and prove that true love exists. Finding True long Lasting Love That Cant fade

I really enjoy this movie it is somewhat similar to the notebook. It really shows how two people can really let a good thing go but can with the help of strangers brought them back together after decades it’s a real love story definitely reccomend it

good chemistry

Photographer Chloe Davenport (Meghan Ory) is exhibiting her photos in a gallery but her confidence takes a hit from bartender Gabe Sinclair (Luke Macfarlane). She is taken with an old photo album at a swap meet and buys it for $10. She grows interested in the couple in the photos and decides to track them down with Gabe’s help.

It’s a Hallmark mystery romance and it’s better than most of Hallmark’s offerings. I actually like the chemistry of the two leads as they banter back and forth. It could have done more. I do have an issue with Chloe’s obsession even after Sarah’s plea for her to stop. It puts a damper on the treasure hunt aspect when it’s a journey against Sarah’s wishes. There has to be a way to put up a speed bump without derailing the whole train. It may work better if Tori’s Garden is the one who tells them to stop. There comes a point when being pushy is no longer cute and becomes destructive. Nevertheless, it’s great to see Adrienne Barbeau again and she still has it.

‘Memory Book’ (2014)

Opening thoughts: 2014’s ‘Memory Book’ did sound very charming even if the plot synopsis was nothing earth shattering. My Hallmark film completest quest (which has gradually overtime included Lifetime and UPTV), that is still ongoing with no intent to stop just yet, has been a very uneven endeavour but an interesting one with some real winners. Luke Macfarlane has been good in other films (especially his later work), though his films are uneven like with a vast majority of Hallmark regulars.

His performance in ‘Memory Book’ is no exception, and the film itself impressed me quite a lot. Not quite one of the standout viewings of the whole Hallmark completest project but of the early 2010’s films it is one of the better ones in my view. It is not earth shattering or anything out of the ordinary, but it was watched by me in the want of something charming, light hearted, touching and heart-warming. ‘Memory Book’ succeeded in all four of those areas on the whole, even if not every single area overall quite comes off.

Bad things: ‘Memory Book’ isn’t perfect. There is admittedly nothing new story wise. It is very easy to tell what is going to happen before it happens and the ending is the pretty typical Hallmark film sort of ending (meaning easily telegraphed and on the too neat side) not in doubt.

It is a slight film too, meaning that there are times where it drags a little.

Good things: Despite those few things, ‘Memory Book’ is a charming, heart-warming charmer that succeeds at a vast majority of its aims. One of the biggest strengths is the very winning performance of Macfarlane. Very subtly charismatic, very natural and very honest. Luckily, Meghan Ory (another relatively Hallmark regular who has also done good work in a hit and miss filmography) is every bit his equal, performing with a lot of heart and charm. Have always liked Adrienne Barbeau, ever since her great voice work on ‘Scooby Doo on Zombie Island’, and she is her usual reliable self. The characters are more than merely ciphers and easy to root for.

Visually, ‘Memory Book’ looks nice. It’s not drably lit, is cohesively edited and the locations are made good use of and photographed in an easy on the eyes way. The music is not constant or overpowering. The dialogue doesn’t have too much cheese and doesn’t fall into schmaltz, it’s amusing and sometimes movingly delivered with spirit. It is very touching later on. The direction is more than capable and while the story is far from perfect it is light hearted and heart-warming, with the sentiment never becoming too much.

Concluding thoughts: Overall, very well done.

Maybe Baby Storyline

Sam (Hugh Laurie) and Lucy Bell (Joely Richardson) are a married couple who seem to have it all: good looks, successful careers and an enthusiastic love life. The only thing they lack is the one thing they want most – a baby. They try everything in their efforts to reproduce: New Age chanting, acupuncture, creative lovemaking, but all this hectic schedule achieves is improvement in their cardiovascular systems. Ovulation charts soon replace spontaneity, when the couple reluctantly deliver themselves into the hands of medical professionals. At the same time, as Sam comes to find his job increasingly unfulfilling, he sets his sights on writing a screenplay, but writer’s block strikes. Encouraged to “look within” by his hippie friend Druscilla (Dame Emma Thompson), Sam is inspired. He will write a comedy about a couple trying for a baby, but Lucy is horrified at the idea, and forbids him to tell their story. Enjoyable and funny

Sam (Hugh Laurie) and Lucy (Joely Richardson) are the perfect couple, they have everything they could possible want, everything that is, except a baby. Sam is trying to write a screen play about a couple trying for a baby, but Lucy is not keen on the idea and forbids him to write it; the trouble is, Sam’s creativity has to be fulfilled somehow?

With some wonderful comedy names like – Hugh Laurie, Joanna Lumley, Dawn French, Emma Thompson, Rowan Atkinson, etc. you would be right to expect this to be a riot, and although not quite as funny as it could be, it is still a funny film and it does have a strong script and a very interesting story.

7/10 a good addition to the British comedies, but it’s not the best

Hmmm…….

This romantic comedy lost its way a bit leaving it only partly romantic and I’m afraid not always very funny. There are a few shots at Auntie (the BBC for our overseas readers) and several very good lines though some may be very familiar to those who have seen writer Ben Elton’s stand up show or his BBC series.

A full cast of 80s alternative comedians makes their appearance, Emma Thompson almost looking identical to her mother in ‘Saving Grace’ in her mad hippie cameo and Dawn French affecting a bizarre Aussie accent as a nurse.

Hugh Laurie does well as always in his role as a sort of alternative 90s Cary Grant and James Purefoy will get most people’s juices running (cf. the line by Joanna Lumley’s character quoted in an earlier comment) but all in all this just wasn’t funny enough, I don’t know why, perhaps there were just too many targets.

Only 6/10 from me I’m afraid.

Sweet little romantic movie.

Most people seem to hate this movie as a comedy and see it as a bas satire on the world of television. The movie is however so much more. The main essence of the movie is on its romance and a sweet little romantic movie this is.

It’s a well made movie, with realistic main characters in a realistic situation. Of course everything is done over-the-top, to still give the movie a light and fun overall feeling, rather than a heavy dramatic one, which it easily could had turned into. I like this approach and it worked out well for the film. It’s fun but at the same time also serious at the right moments. It makes “Maybe Baby” a well balanced movie, that perhaps goes a bit too over-the-top at times, in terms of its credibility.

The strongest point of this movie are the two main characters. There are realistic and their relationship is portrayed in a sensible and good way. Those two character make and form this movie. It’s a movie about real people with real problems. The are nicely portrayed by Joely Richardson and Hugh Laurie. But of course a lighthearted little movie as this also needs over-the-top comical characters. This one is portrayed by Tom Hollander. He for most part is the comic relief of the movie, as a movie director. Unfortunately the movie also thought it was necessary to give some famous British comedians a cameo in this movie. It’s distracting and not always good for the credibility of the movie, though Rowan Atkinson’s role is certainly an entertaining one.

The story is told nicely and has several story lines in it, which never distracts from each other. The entire movie is told with some subtle British humor which help to make this movie a light one to watch.

If you take the movie for what it is (a light romantic movie with humor in it), you’ll certainly enjoy watching this little British movie.
