Exhuma Storyline

Renowned Korean shaman and her protégé, Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and Bong-gil (Lee Do-hyun) are enlisted by a wealthy Korean American family to identify the mysterious illness of the family’s newborn son. Hwa-rim uncovers the curse to be a ‘Grave’s Call’, a vengeful ancestor’s spirit haunting them. The family’s patriarch, Park Ji-Yong, entrust them to relocate the grave to appease the ancestor, his grandfather. Hwa-rim enlists colleagues, a Feng shui master Kim Sang-deok (Choi Min-sik) and a mortician Yeong-geun (Yoo Hae-jin).Sang-deok specializes in selling burial locations for the wealthy, while Yeong-geun owns a funeral home. During their first encounter with Ji-yong, Sang-deok becomes wary when Ji-yong insists on cremating the grave, which is located in a remote mountain near the North Korean border. Sang-deok backs out, sensing a sinister energy. However, Hwa-rim convinces them that she can perform rituals while the grave is being dug to avoid the curse. Ji-yong tells them about a famous monk named ‘Gisune,’ who provided the grave location for his grandfather.Hwa-rim and Bong-gil perform the ritual, and the excavation proceeds smoothly. One of the grave-diggers severs the head of a human-headed snake, which triggers a bad omen. Yeong-geun insists on cremating the coffin once the rain stops so they store it at a nearby ward. The local custodian opens the coffin and releases the vengeful entity inside, Ji-yong’s grandfather. The entity targets his bloodline, killing Ji-yong’s parents and Ji-yong himself. The grandfather is revealed to be a Japanese loyalist during the Korean occupation era. Before he can reach the newborn baby, Sang-deok cremates the coffin, abolishing the curse.Months later, Yeong-geun informs Sang-deok about the disturbed gravedigger who killed a snake. He revisits the cursed gravesite and discovers the head of an ‘onna’ along with a double burial site for a seven-footed standing coffin. He enlists Hwa-rim, Bong-gil, and Yeong-geun to dispose of the coffin. The four excavate it and rest at a temple, where Hwa-rim learns about Gisune Monk, who is Japanese. That night, Bong-gil witnesses a seven-foot figure obliterating a human and pigs. They find the coffin ripped from the inside. Bong-gil gets possessed and the other three witness the creature turn into a ball of fire and fly back to the mountain. The four are taken to a hospital and Bong-gil recovers after surgery.Hwa-rim investigates the creature’s origin through the possessed Bong-gil. Sang-deok returns to the grave and finds the creature dormant on the coordinates written on the tombstone. He discovers that the grave’s robbers were Korean patriots attempting to unearth a metal pole as part of a Japanese military conquest in Korea. Sang-deok, Hwa-rim, and Yeong-geun devise to unearth the pole when the creature rises after midnight. Hwa-rim will distract the shogun while the others dig. A vision reveals Monk Kitsune embedding a katana inside a decapitated samurai’s body, turning the samurai into a ghoul, with Ji-yong’s grandfather’s grave serving as a cover for the relic. Sang-deok realizes the pole is a sword embedded in the creature’s body. Using the Korean patriots’ wooden tool and blood, he slays the creature based on his elemental knowledge and regains consciousness with the others by his bedside. The four later attend Sang-deok’s daughter’s wedding.

Exhuma Movie Reviews

an extremely well-crafted and ambitious horror film that has an uniquely korean historical/mythic DNA at its core.

Disturbing, eerie, and tense, the first half of Exhuma is an explosive mixture of south korean folklore and mythicism. It effectively evokes the universal dread and mystery regarding the afterlife, and what we, people still living and walking on this earth, can and should do with regards to that. The spiritual and supernatural bridge dangling between the two worlds. It works excellently as a paranormal occult horror film. Great atmosphere, never looses the steam, with fairly memorable moments.

But then it reaches the mid point of the film, something happens that made me not exactly sure about how I feel about this film as whole. To be clear: I still did like it a lot and it is nonetheless a strong film, but the aforementioned uneasiness and tension quickly goes away, and never quite reaches the same high as the previous half. It is a reveal/decision that I do appreciate: it is ambitious, creative, and is a big swing that we do not often see in a south Korean film. Also helps that practical effects accompanying it are simply amazing. However, the tonal shift/jarring nature of it kinda turned me off. I do recommend going into the film completely blind!

Kinda torn between 3.5 and 4 stars. It the film carried the strengths of the first two acts to the third act, and kept the film more consistent, it easily would’ve been4 stars and maybe 4.5. Again, still a great film and I highly recommend this to anyone interested in horror films with uniquely korean/asian DNA embedded to it.

Korean Horror Delves into the history of the Japanese occupation

“Exhuma” emerges as a bold tapestry of horror, weaving together an array of tropes that challenge the boundaries of the genre. Its narrative is a complex interplay of classic horror elements, grave digging, psychological twists, demon hunting, and unexpected comedy, creating a cinematic experience that is as unsettling as it is innovative. The overlay of the history of the Japanese occupation adds a layer of moral complexity. While some cultural symbolism may be lost on international audiences, the film’s deliberate pacing cultivates a tension that transcends cultural barriers, culminating in a climax that is both disorienting and impactful. “Exhuma” may not prioritize narrative clarity, but it compensates with a visceral journey through the macabre, leaving viewers with a lingering sense of unease and contemplation long after the credits roll. The film’s commitment to a slow-burn approach rewards patient viewers with a thought-provoking exploration of horror that refuses to be confined by conventional expectations.

The hype works at its best

True. In my country the ticket has gone up unreasonably. Reviews came from movie goers even experts e.g directors make this film as a must see not only for horror lovers but also korean movie lovers. Yes. The hype. Now does it worth it? My answer is no.

Actors are well known. The shaman lady supposed hold the major key to scare spectators. Kim Go Eun should have learnt from Vera Vermiga portraying the famous psychich Lorraine Warren. People have no idea how was Lorraine Warren in real. But Vermiga shows no matter her extra capability and expertise, she’s never in fine mood during scanning or experiencing any paranormal activity.

And when eventually the evil is a giant samurai is somehow outrageous. Never described how that’s possible. I am sensing classic Hollywood horror which exploiting unexplained creatures. Not stopping there, the giant samurai could alter into huge fireball. Ouch!

So I was so curious, because viewers comparing it with The Wailing, then I’m disappointed. Indeed The Wailing is a must see, way better plot and end in one horrific scene. Many other must see Korean thriller/horror movies are: The Call and The Forgotten.

Anyway my appreciation is on the script, connecting the history of Peninsula. Other thing to give a thumb up is the cinematography.

The Cat and the Canary Movie Reviews

Amazing “Old Dark House” film

“The Cat and the Canary” has been considered a masterpiece, and that the film is still known today is a feat in itself. It is easily my favorite silent film. Paul Leni (the director) has a great deal of prowess on films like these, and it has been admitted by others.

First, the sets are realistic, making this film a believable “journey back in time” (it was made over 70 yrs. ago). I am shocked to hear one reviewer say this film as broadly acted and visually stunted. The sets are marvelous, especially the drawing room (it looks very nice to be part of a “haunted house”). The camera work (ex. the skeleton double-exposure, the subtitles occasionally moving like a ghost) is very enjoyable, too.

About the acting, first get this straight: Much of the acting is quite normal. But in the fright scenes (especially by Laura La Plante), the acting has nothing wrong with it. Much of it is very funny (contrary to common belief). Flora Finch (Aunt Susan) is funny as the gossiper, and Creighton Hale as Paul is cute. Why do most of you find the broad acting painful to watch? If you can’t find silent films enjoyable, all I can tell you is, tough luck. Classic films are as a general rule better than the new ones, but even new films can be very good.

Creepy Mystery and Horror Silent Film

The millionaire Cyrus West has spent the last years of his life in his mansion nearby the Hudson River considered insane by his greedy relatives and feeling like a canary in a cage surrounded by cats. When he dies, he stipulates that his lawyer Roger Crosby (Tully Marshall) would read his will that is kept in a safe in the twentieth anniversary of his death. On the scheduled day, Cyrus West’s loyal servant Mammy Pleasant (Martha Mattox) and the lawyer welcome the guests in the creepy mansion that people tells that is inhabited by ghosts: West’s nephews Harry Blythe (Arthur Edmund Carewe), Charles “Charlie” Wilder (Forrest Stanley), the scared Paul Jones (Creighton Hale), Aunt Susan Sillsby (Flora Finch), Cecily Young (Gertrude Astor) and West’s niece Annabelle West (Laura La Plante). When Roger Crosby opens the will, West’s mansion and fortune are left to the most distant relative having the name West, meaning Annabelle. However, she should prove first that she is sane; otherwise, the inheritance would be bequeathed to another heir whose name is in a sealed envelope. Out of the blue, a guard (George Siegmann) comes to the mansion and tells that a dangerous lunatic has fled from an institution. During the night, Roger Crosby disappears and Annabelle receives an envelope from Mammy Pleasant where West tells the location of his precious diamonds. Annabelle finds the jewels and wears a necklace, but while she is sleeping, a hand comes from the wall and steals the diamonds from her neck. With the exception of Paul Jones that loves Annabelle, her relatives believe that she is insane. But when Annabelle finds a hidden chamber in the wall with the body of Roger Crosby, Mammy Pleasant decides to call the police and the identity of the lunatic is disclosed.

“The Cat and the Canary” is a creepy mystery and horror silent film by the German Expressionist director Paul Leni. The plots blends black humor with elements of horror using the atmosphere of the expressionism with shadows and lighting, and the result is a stylish movie where even the inter-titles are funny. The beauty of Laura La Plante is very impressive. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): “O Gato e o Canário” (“The Cat and the Canary”)

Influential Silent Film Is Still Amusing

The 1922 play THE CAT AND THE CANARY was so popular that it made the fortune of author John Willard, who lived to see it filmed no fewer than three times before his death in 1942. Even today the story remains a classic of its kind, inspiring a host of films that mix comedy, mystery, and horror–not to mention still more that focus on suspicious doings in old, dark houses. When questioned by author Gavin Lambert, director James Whale very specifically indicated that the 1927 film version, along with the 1928 THE LAST WARNING, influenced his own work in such films as FRANKENSTEIN and THE OLD DARK HOUSE.

Both THE CAT AND THE CANARY and THE LAST WARNING were created for Universal by director Paul Leni. But while THE LAST WARNING is not presently available to the home market, THE CAT AND THE CANARY most certainly is, and even some eighty years later is possible to see what all the fuss was about. In term of cinematography, CAT is a remarkably imaginative film, using a series of over-lapping images, close-ups, and dissolves to astonishing effect. In a visual sense it is easily one of the most stylish films of the silent era.

The plot is a classic of its kind. Like the original Willard play, the film’s story mixes a host of already-clichéd ideas with several then-new ones. Today, of course, it can be a bit difficult to them apart! But even so it remains a fair amount of fun. An eccentric millionaire has been hounded to death by his greedy relatives–and when he dies he leaves behind a will that imposes a twenty year waiting period between his death and delivery of his estate to his heir. But who will the heir be? The candidates assemble to hear the will at midnight… and no sooner is the heir named than strange doings are afoot.

The characters are archetypes: the nice girl (Laura La Plante), the mild-mannered boy (Creighton Hale), the fashion princess (Gertrude Astor), the battle ax matron (Flora Finch), and so on. Perhaps most memorable is the housekeeper (Martha Mattox), an exceedingly dour woman most ironically named Mammy Pleasant! Add in an exasperated lawyer, a creepy doctor, secret passages, hairy hands with needle-like finger nails, stolen diamonds, and as many dashes of comedy as you can get away with, mix well, and you have the inspiration for a seemingly endless list of classic films.

Although they may seem overly broad by modern standards, the cast plays at the level of what was considered comic-realistic in the late silent era, the production values are first rate, and the plot is quirky enough in a silly sort of way to make the whole thing fun. But it is really the direction and the look of the thing that scores; in its best moments, THE CAT AND THE CANARY is plenty good indeed.

The film is available in several DVD releases. You should avoid the Alpha release; although the picture is passable, the score is so dire that it completely undermines the film. Although it clearly needs further restoration, the Image release is superior and offers your choice of scores, both of which work with the film rather than against it. Recommended for silent fans and those interested in the development of the classic horror film!

Mulholland Dr. Movie Reviews

A movie that really leaves ultimately everything up to you

I can’t get over this movie. WOW.

How do I put what I feel into words? OK, let me give it a shot. Have you seen or felt something that leaves you wondering or sweeps your feet away? This movie does exactly that. The twists and turns that happen along the way just blows you away.

I think you’d need to watch this movie a couple of times so you can at least “TRY” and comprehend what Lynch is trying to say.

If this isn’t the best movie I’ve watched, I don’t know what is!

20/10 rating if that was possible.

Not the movie, but still very well-made

So the backstory of this TV Movie/Pilot is well-told, Lynch made this as a pilot for ABC. ABC didn’t want it, so Lynch moved on. But, it still lingered in his mind a year afterward and decided to rework it into a feature film.

And while this pilot is missing some of the best elements of the Film, it is still a well-acted, well-directed, well-shot, and thrilling TV Movie that has scenes that pretty much all ended up in the final feature film in 2001.

And even with the poor quality of the copy I watched, it is still incredibly entertaining and there is a perfect atmosphere that lingers throughout the 89-minute runtime. I don’t think this would have worked well as a TV Show, and it turning out to eventually be made into a feature is something that was the best thing that could have happened to this story, David Lynch, Naomi Watts, and Justin Theroux.

The full pilot is on YouTube if you want to check it out, for a pilot it is quite amazing and I believe you won’t regret watching it.

So glad that this became a feature

In 1999 David Lynch was tasked with this TV series pilot that was ultimately rejected by ABC. Once Lynch said in an interview that he is “a sucker for a continuing story”. I think the remark is pretty down right. Look for instance at “Twin Peaks” and Lost Highway, both of which I am a big fan of. Also consider Inland Empire as well as all the post-2001 shorts, of which I am not a fan at all.

Be as it may, in this one case the miracle happened. Lynch took the rejected pilot from the drawer and made it in a great full feature film, released in 2001, after re-shooting a few scenes and adding several others. Mulholland Dr. the feature, an apparently elusive but ultimately full sense-making story, is the best of Lynch’s so far, in my opinion, and one of the best movies of the last twenty years.

Now looking back at the pilot, I could not be more grateful that things went the way they did. The episode as such is great looking and builds up a lot of atmosphere. It is definitely of a far superior quality than the average TV show, probably even better than the “Twin Peaks” pilot. But precisely because of this, Mulholland Dr. the pilot deserved more than being just the first episode of a series (and of course more than being left in a drawer).

When you consider it, the pilot has so many merits it is hard to believe it was made for TV. The score by Angelo Badalamenti, the cinematography by Peter Deming, the production design and the technical values in general are all top notch. And what’s more, the acting is superb. Harring and Watts are mesmerizing and it is no surprise that they (especially Watts) went on to star careers after the full feature was released. Watts delivers according to her standards, i.e those of one of the best actresses of her generation. While the same cannot be said of Harring, she is nonetheless good and brings forth a lot of noir atmosphere, sheer sexiness and emotion. And the supporting cast also do an exceptional work, making all of the characters memorable. Just think of then relatively unknown Theroux playing the utterly unlikable film director or of veterans Hedaya and Forster. And of course, the characters are good because the dialog is so good.

Overall, this is clearly not required viewing if you are not a hardcore fan of David Lynch, in which case go to the 2001 movie instead. However, if you already saw and liked the movie, the pilot becomes interesting as it shows how Lynch, for once, beautifully closed the loop. Something that I have missed him doing in the last ten years.

Big Driver Storyline

Driving home along a generally unused country road following a speaking engagement, famed mystery novelist Tess Thorne experiences a flat tire on her car. She accepts the help of who she believes is a good Samaritan who stops to help her, but who instead rapes her, leaving her submerged in shallow water in a drainage pipe as dead. She found out that he actually orchestrated her getting the flat tire just moments before the rape. Alive, she, in shock, is able to make her way home, but she does not go to the hospital, dealing with her wounds herself, does not call the police, or tell any of her friends or acquaintances how she sustained her obvious injuries. Once the issue of what happened to her settles into herself, she decides to use her skills as an investigative writer to find out the reason behind what happened – if she was a random or targeted victim – and especially if the latter, how best to use that information to her advantage. Using her stories’ grandmotherly heroine, Doreen Marcus, as her inspiration, Tess decides that the best course of action is revenge, and figuring out a way not to get caught. In the process, she may discover more than she bargained for.—Huggo

Big Driver Movie Reviews

A distinct King film

If you’re at all familiar with the work of Stephen King then you wouldn’t even need to be told this was an adaption of one of one of his short stories to know it. It has his signatures written all over it from the talking GPS, the elderly character from one of our heroines book who is an extension of herself, the dark humour – it’s all there. I’m told this sticks very faithfully to the book and I’ve always felt adaptations of King’s work are at their best when they do this.

It’s very similar to Jodie Foster’s 2007 film ‘The Brave One’. A woman taking revenge for a heinous crime committed against her. These days the revenge genre, when the lead character is a man, has become a little stale so filmmakers are having to think up creative ways to keep it interesting with unique killing styles and traveling half way across the globe to find their prey. It seems the female lead character is still fresh enough though that the revenge can be enacted in a pretty straight up and down way.

For a TV movie the quality is certainly all there. The acting is very decent and the story never drags nor feels rushed. Maria Bello impressed me in the lead role. She was gritty and believable and never makes you turn against her which is very important in this type of film. It never really does anything original enough to be considered great which is the only thing holding it back. But overall a good watch.

Maria Bello is a Superstar

The lead actress in this movie gives a staggeringly superb performance.

She is a famous fiction writer who becomes the victim of a horrendous crime and decides to seek revenge.

The problem with this film is that it is presented in the screwball style(the story comes from Stephen King) which turns it into what the English call a ‘black comedy’ with imaginary characters and objects speaking out loud and the dead talking after their demise. Despite these challenges, the lead player still manages to make this a compelling view:

7/10.

View more than once

This is written after my second viewing, not having remembered the first viewing when I first got a copy of it, judge that how you like.

Unabashed fan of anything Stephen King and almost anything that Maria Bello is in, this is a good watch. It starts off at a pedestrian enough pace, has a shocking bit that he viewer has to digest then powers on and builds to the climax like almost all Stephen Kings writing does with twists along the way.

Some of the story is a little predictable, but the acting by all concerned is well above average which made the movie quite believable. No silly mistakes and drawn out sequences where the villain gains a temporary upper hand like most revenge movies was a nice change.

Overall an enjoyable movie, but not for the faint hearted.

Door Movie Reviews

Doa ni oto shinaide kudasai

Yasuko (Keiko Takahashi) is alone. The kind of alone where even though she has a husband and a son, she’s alone. Longingly alone. Trapped at home all day, unless she’s running errands. She lives for her family and the only people that she often interacts with are the constant sales calls and salesmen knocking at her door. Some of them are pretty determined. Not all of them are as deranged as Yamakawa (Daijirô Tsutsumi).

He wants to sell her English lessons and she’s made a mistake by leaving the door just chained and not locked. His invasion of her high rise apartment is dealt with by slamming the door, injuring his hand. That’s not where things end.

Yamakawa — like many of the salesmen — knows way too much about his marks. Now, he starts calling Yasuko constantly, breathing heavy, leaving obscenity-laced messages and even leaving tissues stained with his bodily fluids in her mailbox. He nearly gets into her bedroom before her son comes home from school. Yamakawa is innocent now, joining mother and son for a friendly dinner, an invader smiling at the table.

Director Banmei Takahashi, who co-wrote Door with Ataru Oikawa, has a career filled with movies that infuse sex and violence. Incredibly, Keiko Takahashi is his wife and he puts her through hell here, but in the final moments of the movie, she rises above, literal chainsaw in hand, and pays her attacker back. She never apologized for breaking his hand and she’s not about to apologize now.

This was followed by two sequels, Door II: Tokyo Diary about a call girl and the risks she takes, and Door III, in which a salesgirl is “stalked by the strange and supernatural,” which means that now I need to hunt down both of those movies.

Man, the sound of that doorbell is making me nervous now.

Don’t open … the Door

No pun intended – also the main character does not want to do that anyway. I reckon you could call that clever. On the other hand, certain circumstances make things even worse. It also says a lot about your neighbors who care more about when you take the trash out (there are only certain days you are allowed to do so – stinky floors and all that), but not so much about your well being.

The apartment is quite big I have to admit. I reckon the man of the house earns a lot of money – never been to Japan but I don’t think the 80s were cheaper than they are now … and now apparently it is quite … well expensive. So suspend your disbelief and go or rather stay home with those crazy characters.

Some interesting effects – and a mother who has to go above and beyond … who is left to clean up the mess though? Well you have to watch and see … it is a slow burner for most of the time … but when the mayhem starts … well there is no hiding … especially when the camera follows you (a scene that is shot from above is just amazing to say the least) …

it has much suspense

I really liked this and it was so much more thrilling than I thought it would have been. She is there as a beautiful mother and her sweet little boy in this high rise apartment and threatened one after another with spam calls and door to door salesmen. Just this couple and these annoying interruptions and between that front door. It is a strong one, often in Japan being a steel one, and with splendid locks and chain. But there is one guy who is really upset and is sure that he was going to get in. It begins to get something more personal. It is clever that although we are really just in this flat for about an hour it has much suspense and then he gets inside and it is something else. Of course it becomes terrible but somehow Banmei Takahashi also provides some humour and I just about manage to smile in between.

Nightfall Movie Reviews

A surefire cure for insomnia.

The award-winning Isaac Asimov story is very poorly adapted into this perpetually uninteresting, plodding production. A planet somewhat like our own has been bathed in sunlight (after all, it has three suns), and now it has been foreseen that the sunlight will disappear, and darkness will reign. The residents, some of whom are terrified by this concept, divide into two factions, enacting the ages-old debate of science vs. Superstition.

This viewer is not surprised to hear that this is NOT particularly faithful to the story (as it is, Asimov disowned it). It’s such a deadly dull affair with nothing to really hook a viewer. Being that it was produced by B movie outfit Concorde, it’s low-budget through and through. It’s very inscrutable, and, although it creates some mildly watchable visuals, it features a largely nondescript cast that is hardly convincing. Star attraction David Birney (‘Someone’s Watching Me!’) gives a performance that is as boring and colorless as the film itself. The appealing Sarah Douglas of “Superman: The Movie” and “Superman II” is on hand, but she’s not given anything truly interesting to do.

“Nightfall” was badly scripted by director Paul Mayersberg, who’d fared a lot better a dozen years previous writing the screenplay for “The Man Who Fell to Earth”; this at least features a decent music score by Frank Serafine, but that is not nearly enough to redeem this forgettable movie.

Three out of 10.

Bad, but twice as good as the 2000 remake

I recently bought the DVD of the Nightfall TV movie from 2000, and regretted it as soon as I saw it. That anyone could possibly do something so low-budget and stupid to an Asimov story is just beyond me. I rated it a 2 out of 10.

Now, at that time, I hadn’t seen the 1988 movie. But I just now borrowed the video tape from a friend, and had a watch. To some extent, it looks like the same people who did the 2000 movie did this one. But, there are differences. The 2000 movie is a complete loss; there isn’t any acting or proper coherence to the story, and of course very little that actually reminds of the original Asimov story.

The 1988 movie is quite a bit better. The actors are much, much better. The production values are better; the overall style of clothes, hair, etc. are much more consistent. And the dialog is better. The story, while ripping the original short story into tatters, at least does make a slight bit of sense in a couple of ways. The whole sex dimension with Ana was not in the original story, but I actually thought it worked all right here. If you accept that they changed the story and had a different vision for the project, I think this was, well, not as bad as it could have been. I don’t think it deserves an avalanche of 1 ratings.

One thing that is really annoying, though, is the way it ends. This movie just ends with the stars coming out and everybody sitting around saying, “oh, that’s nice!” In the original story, much of the plot only takes place after the stars have come out and made everybody crazy – that’s the whole point of the story! That people find out that the universe is infinitely bigger than they thought before, and this makes them crazy and leads to the destruction of civilization. Most of that entire dimension was just cut away here. Sigh.

As an Asimov story, it is a lost cause. Still, seen as an independent story in and of itself, I do think it was half-way entertaining and had a few nice instances of both plot and acting.

So, my rating is a 4 out of 10 for this one.

Too Boring For Me

This movie is apparently meant to make a statement on the difference between sacred and secular knowledge; and the value of science, to both. Written in a time when religion was still held in some kind of regard by the entertainment industry, there seem to be arguments made on behalf of both the religious and non-religious communities. Fast-forwarding to the end, showed some kind of destruction; no doubt brought on by the refusal of each side to cooperate with the other. It looked dramatic and in some way compelling; but was too boring for me.

Murder on Monday Movie Reviews

Amnesia, murder and a sweet married couple

Ralph Richardson arrives home from work at seven as he does every day, where he finds his wife Margaret Leighton sobbing. When she shows him the newspaper, it hits him: it’s not Monday evening but Tuesday evening! He’s been missing for an entire day, and he has no recollection of where he’s been. While trying to figure out what happened with family doctor Jack Hawkins, they get news that the safe of Richardson’s social club has been robbed, and a steward at the club murdered. Inspector Campbell Singer is investigating and all clues seem to lead to Richardson…

Based on a play by R.C. Sheriff (and inspired by personal experiences) that also starred Richardson (‘The Fallen Idol’), this is the sole movie that he directed. Which is quite a remarkable feat as he’s in almost every scene. He does a very nice job tho, both in front of and behind the camera. He gives a great restrained performance and Leighton (‘The Good Die Young’) is perfectly cast as his wife. Together they make one of the sweetest couples I’ve seen lately, with some very touching scenes (esp the one where he tries to prepare her for life without him, while having tea and toast). The resolution of Richardson’s predicament is quite satisfying and also adds depth to the movie and Richardson’s psyche. It also shows how an innocent little white lie between husband and wife (and this one really is innocent), can have grave consequences…

Richardson’s directing and the camera work by Jack Hilyard (‘The Bridge On The River Kwai’) and Edward Scaife (‘Night of The Demon’) is straight-forward and devoid of flourishes but efficient and solid. It’s not the most exciting movie ever made as it is primarily dialogue-driven, but it’s a good uber-British stiff upper lip take on an amnesia noir thriller, with excellent and touching performances by Richardson and Leighton. Recommended. 7/10

British Gold Nugget from the 1950’s

Ralph Richardson, who both directs and acts in this film, has taken a simple story that depicts a short period in the life of a middle-class couple in post-war England whose routine is suddenly disrupted by the memory lapse of the husband. The story is brought to life by the acting of the three main actors – Richarson and Margaret Leighton as the couple and the medical doctor, Jack Hawkins.

A veteran of World War II (1939-45), the dutiful husband is stricken with an anxiety attack that causes him to relive his days in battle. When this mental episode is over, he cannot remember what happened for a full 24-hour period. Husband and wife are perplexed and anxious by this sudden turn of events. They turn to their understanding family doctor for an explanation. The doctor, Jack Hawkins, is sympathetic and not overly worried but eager to find out the source of the problem.

As it turns out, a theft and murder occurred that seem to implicate the husband or so the couple fears. Lies and cover-ups complicate the matter and the couple become so upset that they make things worse for themselves. The couple are so used to their routine that a sudden and unexplained twist becomes exaggerated. The story presents us with a puzzle and the reaction of two decent but somewhat docile human beings, who feel they will be unfairly targeted by the authorities. However, the police go about their work very calmly and before long everything is explained.

The movie is a throwback to a time when ordinary people enjoyed simple pleasures like going to their club, or taking in the “pictures” and growing their chrysanthemums in the adjoining greenhouse garden…so very British.

It is these very ordinary people that I have a great sympathy and admiration for in our often self-serving world. Nothing extraordinary about the movie or the couple but almost 60 years on, the acting still makes it a delight to watch.

Strangely unsettling

Many seem to dismiss this movie as a mild matinée entertainment. I found it very unsettling as the story deliberately starts with a normal, boring situation only to depart from normality in an abrupt and disturbing way to offer a glare into the abyss of the human psyche. The first two or three minutes the viewer is given time to settle down for something that looks like a comedy. A cheerful caricature of a meek office clerk (Ralph Richardson) comes home. He meets his wife desperate, she tells him he has disappeared for 24 hours. The clerk is not aware of that.

Now, this is a standard situation for a comedy. But in this movie the couple in question is simply shattered. Time you cannot account for is regarded by them as abnormal, a potential sin. Distrust arises, the wife distrusts her husband and, what’s worse, the husband distrusts himself. The situation gets worse when the clerk learns that a member of a club he belongs to was murdered during the time in question. In desperation he goes to see a doctor (Jack Hawkins) and tells him of his memory loss and the murder. He also tells him that he thinks he might have committed the murder. As the doctor tries to laugh that off the clerk says: But I absolutely hated that man. He does that with an unexpected vehemence that it really made me jump.

The riddle can be solved and the story has a happy ending. The clerk’s amnesia was caused by subconscious memories of bombing raids, a backfiring car made him go into shock for 24 hours, luckily in a „safe place” (a pub). As a matter of fact, the discovery of this hidden vulnerability is horrific and was probably not uncommon the time this movie was made. And the way the main protagonist practically bends over double to put blame on himself is heart-wrenching. Ralph Richardson gives a deep, feeling performance in this unusual psychological drama about guilt, trust, order and disorder. He also directed.

The Last Warning Movie Reviews

A mystery dressed up as a horror film

Essentially this is part “Cat and the Canary” and part “Phantom of the Opera” – also silent Universal properties. It has some slack parts but the visual atmosphere helps to cover them up, and it has some very inventive title cards where the writing may be initially blurry and come into focus, or the writing may start up clear and then appear to melt down the page, or it may appear to be underwater.

The film is about an actor, John Woodford, in a theatre on Broadway, who dies suddenly when he gets to the part of the play where he is backed into the fireplace by another actor and picks up a candlestick. The lights go out, and when they come back on there is Woodford dead on the floor. The police come to question everybody who was present, then Woodford’s body disappears before the coroner gets there. It is discovered by the police that Woodford and another actor, Richard Quayle (John Boles) were arguing in actress Doris Terry’s (Laura LaPlante’s) dressing room, and both were suitors of hers.

So without a body, the investigation cannot go on, the theatre is closed, and the papers are shown having a field day with the “love triangle” that is insinuated to have something to do with the killing. Several years later, Woodford’s close friend (Montagu Love as Arthur McHugh) decides to reopen the theatre with the same cast as the night of the killing and the same play. Why does the entire cast return? Because to not return would make them look guilty.

But somebody does not want the play to open. Heavy scenery comes crashing down. Smoke bombs go off. Threatening letters are written to members of the cast that they perform at their peril, and some mysterious masked figure is running and jumping about the place and even stealing Doris’ purse and putting her personal possessions in strategic places to make her look like she is in on all of the strange happenings. Is it the ghost of John Woodford trying to avenge himself? Well of course not. But it might be the real John Woodford, having faked his own death, and still mad at Boles and LaPlante for his romantic rejection. Watch and find out what is behind all of this.

The visuals are just great here. The opening scene reminds me somewhat of 1929’s Broadway with all of the pictures of the Broadway nightlife of 1929. Also, the theatre, from the outside, looks like the face of some frightening creature complete with eyes, a nose, and mouth. I just wish better prints were available.

Unseen masterpiece of mystery!

This movie pops up on ebay once in a while and for fans of mystery or horror films, particularly those of Universal, this is a must.

The plot is unimportant – it is about a haunted old theater where an old Broadway play is being brought back despite threats from the ghost of a dead actor.

This film was the last directed by the great Paul Leni. It is really the work of a virtuoso working at his peak. It has everything The Cat and the Canary had and more. The version that seems to be relatively available on video has a good music track too, but unfortunately it seems that the experimental sound sequences the film originally contained have not survived.

Nevertheless, we are lucky that this film has survived as it is such a joyous romp of horror cliches with inventive, wild camera moves and stunning lighting and spooky set design. It foreshadows the great horror classics that were less than two years away for Universal. It is just wonderful filmmaking from a forgotten great director who was at his peak, so if you are into old dark house mysteries or Universal horror movies – FIND IT! – It is one of the best!

8/10 – even better than The Cat and the Canary.

You will never get through the opening performance!

Astute producer Carl Laemmle invited talented German director Paul Leni to join Universal. This proved to be a masterstroke. Before his untimely death in 1929 Leni directed four films one of which, ‘The Chinese Parrot’ is considered ‘lost’, the other three of which are superb. From its astonishing opening sequence ‘The Last Warning’ is a brilliantly inventive and imaginative piece that holds our attention throughout. A great deal of credit must surely go to cinematographer Hal Mohr who, although American born, had assimilated European film techniques during a brief sojourn in Paris. His greatest achievement is the ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’ of Max Reinhardt. The specially composed score although a little over-orchestrated, is far superior to the usual incongruous, excruciating, tacked on scores with which so many restored silent films are cursed. Such a sadness to lose a director of Leni’s gifts but his influence on Universal’s classic horrors of the 1930’s is there for all to see.

This is about a cursed box that is linked to Japan’s suicide forest.

This was more slow burning than I expected it to be. It took a while for things to get going and it made things feel a bit disjointed at first. To be honest though, there were webpages that were displayed and may have provided more context to the story had I been able to read them. The subtitles I had were decent but didn’t cover webpage dialogue and I may have missed a few things.

The overall story wasn’t bad and the acting was good. The horror aspects were sparse throughout most of the film but when we finally got there, there were some unnerving and creepy moments that were well done.

I’ll probably watch it again just to see if I can pick up on what I may have missed but I don’t have a problem recommending it for a creepy watch.

Takashi Shimizu – The Savior of J-Horror

The second installment in the “Horror Village” series by Takashi Shimizu, following “Howling Village.” Takashi channeled his Ju-On era by creating a frightening lore surrounding Japan’s infamous suicide forest. The out-of-the-box innovative death scenes and a brilliant cast of prettiest girls proved J-horror still got the originality and aesthetics.

There is no village

There’s only a box.

With fingers, which makes no sense at all.

Take the box to the forest, dump it out, burn it. No more box of gross .

If mom lost 2 fingers AFTER she died & granny lost one. Why didn’t they take M out of the forest? Why did her sister have to? Mom & granny were already dead & there.

There was a village a hundred of years ago. But not when this took place.

Could have been a lot better with more explanations.

Naked You Die Storyline

The corpses are piling up at St. Hilda’s School for Girls, leaving top cop Michael Rennie with more than the usual suspects. Is the killer Mark Damon? Peeping Tom Luciano Pigozzi? Or someone else? Mario Bava’s original script “Cry Nightmare” was entrusted to director Antonio Margheriti. Be sure to see the Italian version which runs 98 mins. (the film was hacked by 15 minutes and retitled by American International Pictures to show mainly at drive-ins).—Monty Britton

Naked You Die Movie Reviews

A giallo with a lighter tone than usual

This 60’s giallo is from the days before the genre truly took form. With the notable exception of Mario Bava’s Blood and Black Lace, gialli produced before Dario Argento’s groundbreaking debut The Bird with the Crystal Plumage were relatively restrained affairs with very little violence. Despite its exploitative-sounding title, Naked You Die is firmly in this bracket. It has a somewhat playful tone much of the time and the murders are very tame indeed and contrary to what you might reasonably expect from the title, there is no actual nudity either. Instead it’s a bloodless but reasonably stylish mystery-thriller that displays some key hallmarks of the genre.

The film starts out typically enough with a woman being murdered by a black-gloved assassin while taking a bath. Although the actual violence here – and throughout the movie – is extremely tame; the killer merely squeezes the victim’s necks quite lightly and briefly and they then fall over dead. It’s very soft stuff but is indicative of the tone of the film as a whole, as despite the girl-school setting and the topic of a maniac on the loose, the movie adopts an almost comic approach a lot of the time, with quite a lot of playful humour and a lightness of touch that certainly would not go on to be a recognisable feature of the giallo genre in subsequent years. Still the film does have other more typical elements of this sub-genre such as a great Euro soundtrack, some nice photography, a host of eccentric characters, a barrel-load of red herrings and a convoluted conclusion – this said ending is both predictable and senseless, while somehow still being quite effective.

Naked You Die is not a prime example of giallo cinema. It’s a minor entry which showcases the type of films from the early days of the genre. It might disappoint those after something sleazy or violent. However, if you are at all a fan of this sub-genre then there is certainly enough here to enjoy. Just be aware that the thrills on offer are of a more breezy kind.

Clothed, They Die, Actually. – Beautifully Shot Giallo From Margheriti

Titles can be misleading. Antonio Margheriti’s “Nude… Si Muore” (aka. “Naked You Die”/”Schoolgirl Killer”) is NOT the exploitative and blood-soaked Giallo full of sleaze and nudity one might expect from its title. Sure, the film was made in 1968, at which time the Italian Giallo had not reached the sleaze and violence level it obtained in the early 70s, but the title “Naked You Die” still promises nastiness, especially in the wonderful Giallo-genre. What “Nude… Si Muore” is, however, is a superbly set, beautifully shot and atmospheric Giallo that sets its focus on the mystery, more than on the Horror elements. Yet I cannot deny that the film did just not quite reach my (very high) expectations. For two reasons, that is. First off, I am a great fan of the late genius director Antonio Margheriti. His brilliant Gothic masterpiece “Danza Macabra” (aka. “Castle Of Blood”, 1964, with the wonderful Barbara Steele, my favorite actress, in the lead) is a personal favorite of mine, and many of his other films, such as “La Vergine Di Norimberga” (“Terror Castle”, 1963) are also excellent films that every Horror fan must see. Secondly, this film was recommended to me by a fellow Giallo-buff as being particularly great and atmospheric. And atmospheric it is, and doubtlessly a very good thriller, but, as far as I am considered it is not a particularly impressive film within my beloved Giallo-sub-genre.

A posh boarding school for girls from rich families is being stalked by a killer. Several new teachers have arrived, and, naturally, everybody is a suspect… The performances are quite good, the cast includes well known faces for fans of Italian genre-cinema, such as Mark Damon (“I Tre Volti Della Paura”) and regular cult-cinema actor Luciano Pigozzi, who, among many other films, often had supporting roles in Mario Bava’s films. Beautiful Elonora Brown stars in the lead, sadly it is the last role the then 20-year-old actress has played up to date. The girls are entirety pretty, and I also found the actresses’ performances quite good. The film’s most memorable qualities are the superb and beautiful setting and ingenious camera work, intensified by a funky and great score by Carlo Savina. What (slightly) annoyed me at times was the constant attempt of bringing in (very cheesy) humor. Also, the mystery part could have been a little more complex. Overall, “Nude… Si Muore” has some flaws, but it is supremely shot, highly atmospheric and very entertaining, and a film that my fellow Giallo-buffs should enjoy. Recommended.

Unoriginal, but entertaining Giallo from Margheriti!

Unlike many Giallo films, Antonio Marghetiti’s Schoolgirl Killer hardly features any of the blood, sex and general sleaze that have made the genre famous, and instead puts its focus on the murder mystery and central set of characters. In fact, it’s amazing just how restrained this film is, considering that it is set in an all-girls school and how almost every Giallo film with a similar setting takes full of advantage of this. The director does an exquisite job of presenting his story and his setting, and the film features some stunning camera work, which beautifully captures the well designed sets, and the fashion sense of the girls at the college. The film begins with a murder in which the killer strangles a woman and has the body put into a trunk which is then delivered to an all-girls school. Shortly thereafter; Betty-Ann, a student at the school is murdered in the basement, and when another young girl is killed in the shower, the police, led by Inspector Durant, are called in. And they’re not the only ones on the case, as amateur detective Jill is also investigating.

It’s true that there is hardly any originality at all in the film, and influences range from the obvious films such as Blood and Black Lace, to a certain American classic. This has lead many to call the film tired and unexciting, but I disagree as the relaxed way that the story is told allows the audience to get involved with the mystery, and the comedy elements of the film bode well with all giggling girls school environment. The main problem with this film is that’s barely any blood whatsoever, which leaves the murder scenes feeling rather. There are other subplots going on, however – things such as the tentative romance between a teacher and one of the pupils, and Margheriti does well at presenting a whole range of characters, any of which could be guessed at as the killer before the twist ending is revealed. The ending of the film has been used so many times now that it’s a cliché, but that aside; it does come as something of a surprise. The problem with the ending, however, is that it basically admits that most of the film has been rather pointless, as there were only two people that needed to be murdered – but Giallo isn’t well known for logic, and while this might be derivative, it’s still well worth seeing!

From Within Storyline

In a small Maryland town, the suicide of an outcast teenager triggers a string of violent suicides. These suicides seem to stem from a curse which spreads when any person, who witnesses the suicide, is possessed by an evil force that appears as the person’s doppelganger that only they can see. A young teenager, named Lindsey, thinks there is a connection of the events to Aidan, the outcast brother of the first suicide case. But Lindsay must race against the clock when she witnesses her mother fall victim, and must try to find a way to stop the curse before it kills her too. Meanwhile the God-fearing townspeople, led by a fanatic preacher with a connection to the events also, form a vigilante group to take the law in their own hands.—matt-282

From Within Movie Reviews

Compulsory suicide + religious freaks = scary stuff!

Horror films dealing with “compulsory suicide” as a theme are automatically unsettling and scary. They’re also quite rare, since they must deal with the issue of how to give a proper and reasonably plausible explanation to the strange phenomenon of the compulsory suicides. Larry Cohen’s “God Told Me To” is a fine example, and to a lesser extent also the more recent “Truth or Dare”, but the modest sleeper-hit “From Within” might be the best one yet. Here the suicides are linked to extremely religious fanaticism and a curse evoked by a family of heathens.

Bible freaks are frightening as well, especially when they are young folks like the characters played here by Kelly Blatz and Adam Goldberg. “From Within” is probably the only film ever in which the fancy religious nerd beats up the handsome rebel kid in the schoolyard! The suicide sequences are disturbing because the victims are (mostly) innocent and often still very young, and personally I always get the creeps from self-declared prophets spreading the – supposed – Word of God. The film, set in a secluded little town, also looks stunningly beautiful and stylish, which is no doubt due to the director – Phedon Papamichael – being an Oscar-winning cinematographer. The performances are good, the soundtrack is suiting, and the climax is – hands down – one of the best and most shocking climaxes of all horror movies made after the year 2000.

Good Job

Although this type of film has been done many times before there is always room for good writing, acting, camera work and directing. Hey, if one is going to enjoy a modest budget horror flick one must get past the fact the takes-place-in-a-town-with-weird-residents plus the supernatural-aspects-to-be-taken-for-granted are simply ingrained in the process. This setting and genre must either be accepted and enjoyed or ignored altogether.

That said, the acting is FROM WITHIN is exceptional. The teens (and they actually look like teenagers instead of dressed up 30-year-olds) are neither sullen nor over the top but anxious, indecisive, vulnerable; i.e., like real teenagers. Miss Rice in particular delivers her lines in convincing fashion. The two young male leads could easily slide into stereotypes but…well…don’t. The adults, e.g., the sheriff and the preacher, aren’t overbearing elders. All the adults, in fact, actually interact with the teens, whereas in many movies like this one there is the teen world (Read: real and emotional) and the adult world (Read: static and authoritative).

The supernatural aspect, while never believable, is thankfully modest in inception and use. If the final scenes are not edge-of-your-seat they hold your interest as to what’s going to happen. Cool “twist” at the very end too. What’s a 56-year-old movie snob watching something like this for? Hey, I’m entitled to some fun too. Most things like this are lucky to last 20 minutes on my screen. FROM WITHIN went the full micro-wave popcorn ninety minutes.

Passable

Suicide stalks the population of a religious town, one by one, until the heroine must save herself by dispelling the curse.

This moves along at a fair clip, in Final Destination style, and the direction is good. The pursuit by dopplegangers is spooky, with a couple of mild jump scares, although the deaths are tame.

Not so sure about the writing, as there are some clunky scenes, stereotypical characters (plus the cousin was there just for plot purposes), and it all wraps up with a … chase through the woods. There are not just one, but two unconvincing crowd scenes where extras gather around in circles. However, there is a neat twist at the very end.

The acting is OK, although the preacher’s son seemed to have a giant zit under his makeup. Music lacked passion, but the piano nocturnes were good.

Overall it felt overstuffed with elements that the writer struggled to wrap together, and the logic of the story meant the baddies were right all along.

The long, scathing review just below is not unfair, but I found this passable entertainment.

The Angel Tree Storyline

Rebecca McBride is a Los Angeles-based writer for Aspire, an on-line magazine. As a result of her article on her hometown’s wish-granting Angel Tree, her editor promises her own byline if she identifies the mysterious wish-granting Angel for Christmas. To research the article, she needs to go home for the first time in 20 years. She reluctantly agrees, having lost faith in Christmas magic years before, when her tree wish to stay in Pine Riiver forever was not granted. She finds her childhood friend Matthew still behind the counter at his family diner. While she tries her best to track down the Angel, Matthew is right there protecting the identity. Her daughter Cassie accompanies her and bonds with Matthew’s sister Zoe’s son, Owen. She joins up with the town to grant the plethora of wishes including this one — granting Zoe’s son Owen his wish for his mom home for Christmas, even though deployed in South Korea as an Army Sergeant. Her ultimate article is a compromise that makes everyone happy — both her editor and Matthew.

The Angel Tree Movie Reviews

Better than other holiday movies

The story is nice and the actors are very good (certainly quite different than others in this type of movie, who can range from overacting to not believable). Bottom line is that this movie ends up being better than other holiday ones.

Home is a place that is always waiting for you…I wish I lived here.

I absolutely love both Jill Wagner and Lucas Bryant and they didn’t disappoint.

Jill Wagner plays Rebecca, a writer who writes an article about The Angel Tree from her old home town where a mysterious and anonymous benefactor grants the wishes left on the Angel Tree every year at Christmas. Rebecca’s editor bribed her in to trying to find out who the benefactor is and write an article about them…promising that she can write more of the articles that she wants to write about real people if she does. Challenge accepted! Rebecca packs up her daughter (she is a widower) and goes back to her old home town for the first time ever and stays with her aunt. On the first day she runs in to her old best friend, Matthew, who is running his parents diner and doing a coffee roasting business on the side. The two fall back in to an instant affection…they have great chemistry, and are immediately set up on opposing sides as Matthew wants to help keep Angel anonymous. His nephew however joins Rebecca and her daughter on the hunt to solve the Angel mystery.

One interesting wrinkle, Rebecca’s article attracts outsiders and the number of wishes appearing on the Angel Tree more than doubles. Rebecca realizes it is more than one person can handle.

“People, in general, just want to believe in something good at Christmas. You know and if you want to call that magic, then yeah they want to believe in magic. And now because of me it is just going to be a big disappointment…unless…”-Rebecca.

Rebecca doesn’t want anyone to be disappointed like she was all those years ago when Matthew’s wish to save the diner came true, but her wish to stay in town did not, so along with Matthew and quite a few other town members…they start working on granting the wishes.

This was a delightful film that is exactly what Christmas should be about…helping others. I smiled, I laughed, I cried and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Thank you, Hallmark!

Jill and Lucas are the best, I hope there are more opportunities to see these two.

“I know she wants to know your name…but maybe things won’t be the same.”-Matthew

The impromptu and unique song was the icing and cherry on top of this delicious holiday treat.

Who is Angel?

Another classic Hallmark movie: a sweet and warm Christmas story with a solid script; strong performances by the leads; and plenty of Christmas spirit and festive cheer. One of my favorites thus far this season. The chemistry between Jill Wagner (as Rebecca) and Lucas Bryant (as Matthew) was excellent. There was some very good, convincing interaction between the two of them thru-out. For example, about 30 minutes into the film, there was the scene where they were walking down the street together; the banter and dialogue (and chemistry) here was great. Wagner, a Hallmark regular, performs great in these types of roles. The supporting cast was very good too. Cassidy Nugent (as Cassie), for example, had a cute performance. The story itself is a heartfelt one and provided a sense of Christmas spirit (it did for me, at least). It is a predictable story of course but engaging, nevertheless. Though to be fair, I did not know who Angel was until the end. Regarding the wish tree, I do think that writers could have done a bit more with the wishes (some more, e.g., nobler wishes). Overall, it is an entertaining Christmas movie, providing some holiday warmth, spirit, and festive cheer. Fans of Hallmark will not be disappointed.

Try to Remember Storyline

After 12 years of being away, Lisa Monroe returns to her usually quiet hometown of Milford to work as a police detective. She was recruited by her childhood friend, now Lieutenant Joe O’Conner. The first case on which she works as lead investigator is the death of Louise Dexter, her grandmother. Although the autopsy points to the death being accidental, Lisa finds evidence that implicates Jake Mitchell as the murderer. Jake Mitchell raped and killed Lisa’s best friend Jenny Rand 15 years earlier. Jake has been paroled and has returned to Milford to live. At his trial, he vowed revenge on the four people who testified against him, namely Louise, Sergeant Stuart Kling (Lisa’s colleague who does not respect her investigative abilities), a security guard named Vinnie DiCampo, and Lisa herself. To some extent, all four feel guilty, but especially Lisa, about not preventing Jenny’s death, each who had an opportunity that day to intervene in the interaction between Jake and Jenny. Lisa’s current mission is to find and stop Jake before he kills them. But she tries to be objective in the face of what so far is only circumstantial evidence against Mitchell, being objective which is something difficult for her to do.—Huggo

Try to Remember Movie Reviews

A Mild Thriller.

“Try To Remember” is a mild thriller. The plot is about Lisa (Gabrielle Anwar) who is a detective. She is investigating a crime that happened 15 years ago. It’s reopened because the witnesses are starting to die under suspicious circumstances. There aren’t many clues, but can she figure it out before there’s more victims?.

The main problem with this film is that there’s too much exposition and buildup. You have to wait for an hour to see anything happen. The acting is fine, but the mystery itself is a little predictable. The writing could’ve been stronger. The movie takes the easy way out.

Overall, it’s an okay mystery film if you don’t have high expectations.

Pretty ordinary and predictable

I like Mary Higgins Clark’s books on the whole, but they often don’t translate well to movies. Sadly, this is one of those times.

The characters are blaaaaaaand. Garbielle Anwar’s character is the one of the most pathetic portrayals of a female detective I’ve come across. The love interest is fine… but dull. The contrary, grumpy sergeant… who also happens to contradict himself every second sentence and apparently doesn’t recognise a crime scene and proper police procedure??? sigh. Really? A little less formula and a little more spice would have been nice for the characters, I think.

Overall it’s just a rather boring take on a potentially interesting story.

Solid thriller with haunting soundtrack…

Seen this a few times and think it’s very engaging and well-made with a plot that throws up a significant surprise.

Not sure why it’s received median scores, but you’ll see lots of dreck inferior to this TV flick that are often rated as average.

If you haven’t seen it before – certainly worth a look and if you have a musical ear that melody stays in mind for a long time afterwards.
