The Mikado Storyline

In a mythical Japan, Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor, has been appointed Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute before the arrival of the ruling Mikado. He lights upon Nanki-Poo, a strolling minstrel who loves the beautiful Yum-Yum. But Yum-Yum is also loved by Ko-Ko, and Nanki-Poo, seeing no hope for his love, considers suicide. Ko-Ko offers to solve both their problems by executing Nanki-Poo, and an agreement is reached whereby Ko-Ko will allow Nanki-Poo to marry Yum-Yum for one month, at the end of which Nanki-Poo will be executed, in time for the arrival of the Mikado. But what Ko-Ko doesn’t know is that Nanki-Poo is the son of the Mikado and has run away to avoid a betrothal to an old harridan named Katisha. The arrival of the Mikado brings all the threads of the tale together.—Jim Beaver

The Mikado Movie Reviews

Flawed but well made, well sung and interesting film of The Mikado

The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s best works, and I was most interested in seeing this version after trying to view as many G&S productions as possible. I personally prefer the Lesley Garrett/Eric Idle 1987 version, but while flawed this Mikado is still interesting. Much has been said about the cuts, and I have to agree. I can understand why there were some, but some either didn’t make sense to be cut or are just too good, KoKo’s Little List number was especially true to this. I also thought the spoken prologue was rather pointless and characters have a tendency in important scenes in drift in and out of range.

However, visually and technically it is splendid, the Technicolour looks gorgeous and the costumes and sets are wonderfully authentic. The music is among G&S’s best, and while you do wish it was complete it is beautifully performed and conducted. The comedy is sparkling and witty also, and the story is still charming enough. The performances are generally great, Kenny Baker is not quite as impressive as Nanki-Poo, vocally the singing is bright and clear and he looks the part but his acting is rather bland. On the other hand, Jean Collins sings Yum-Yum beautifully and Constance Willis is wonderfully arrogant and poignant as Katisha. John Barclay is an imposing Mikado, Gregory Stroud is good in the insubstantial role of Pish-Tush and Sydney Granville is delightfully pompous as Pooh-Bah. But the best performance easily comes from the splendid KoKo of Martyn Green, one of the best ever in this role, that’s for sure.

All in all, interesting and generally well-made and sung, but at the same time perhaps not the most ideal of versions. 7.5/10 Bethany Cox

I am right and you are right and all is right as right can be

I’ve seen this 1939 Technicolor version of the Mikado now maybe 10 times over 3 decades and it hasn’t palled on me yet, it’s a wonderful production of a wonderful operetta. I’m not a huge Gilbert & Sullivan expert, but I consider this to be their best work overall – I’d give the music and lyrics 9.9 out of 10 alone – and I do recognise this was edited to be squeezed into 90 minutes. This means a few great scenes and songs are not here, but as it’s still great all the way through anyway I don’t mind too much.

Although he did a good job, was good looking and had a fine singing voice Kenny Baker is the only thing about this production that jars a little, his kind of material was best displayed in films like At The Circus. But I’m not a Kenny Baker expert either! Was it simply to help sell it in America, or did he want the role?

At this distance we should be grateful for what we’ve got – I wish this entire team (cast and crew) had also made some of the other greats such as Pinafore and Penzance for us to admire and then quibble over the chosen edit! To anyone who wants to give G&S a try, try this, revel in Gilbert’s gloriously witty and extensive use of the English language, be roused by some of Sullivan’s most beautiful and catchy tunes. If you still don’t appreciate it then I don’t think any of their other work will do it for you either.

Those Flowers That Bloom In The Spring Tra La

With the exception of American radio tenor Kenny Baker, the members of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company are the cast of this filmed production of the Mikado. It was the first technicolor film done in the United Kingdom although in that same year, much better use of color was made in The Four Feathers.

A lot of history has passed since The Mikado made its debut in the 1880s. At that time Japan was considered the most exotic place on earth and with good reason. In 1853, the American expedition under Commodore Matthew Perry forcibly opened Japan to the world. Up to that time they had almost completely isolated themselves from the west for over 200 years. Westerners who found there way there, never returned. Only the Dutch had extremely limited trading facilities in Japan for years.

When they did open up, the curiosity of the west was unbounded on both sides of the Atlantic pond. In time the British would sign a treaty of alliance to protect each other’s Far East interests. When that treaty was not renewed in 1923 it eventually set the two powers on a course for war.

But in the 1880s Great Britain was fascinated by things Japanese and Gilbert&Sullivan scored a big old satirical hit with The Mikado. If the music and manners of the cast sound British it’s because from the safety of a land during the Middle Ages, the battling partners could get a few barbs in about British society and politics from a very firm safety net. The way Pooh-Bah collects offices and honors with the accompanying salaries was very much in line with the way the British courts over the years rewarded service rendered.

Starring in the role of Nanki-Poo the Mikado’s son who has run away because he doesn’t want to marry some old harpy dad’s picked out for him is American radio singer Kenny Baker. He did several films, most notably the Goldwyn Follies where George Gershwin’s last song hit during his lifetime, Love Walked In, became permanently identified with him. Baker was a regular on Jack Benny’s radio program, later replaced by Dennis Day. Later on Baker scored a big hit on Broadway with Mary Martin in One Touch Of Venus. No doubt for reasons of export the British producers chose Baker to have some recognizable name away from the D’Oyly Carte regular company who no one on this side of the pond would have known. Baker’s light pleasing tenor does justice to the Gilbert&Sullivan patter.

The film does lack production values though, it’s a photographed performance of the opera. I would have liked to have seen better and outdoor sets possibly, but this is a never-neverland kind of Japan.

The Mikado got an Oscar nomination for color cinematography, but was just another casualty to the Gone With The Wind juggernaut of 1939. Still it’s an interesting film and Gilbert&Sullivan fans who just care about the music should be pleased.

Dangerous When Wet Movie Reviews

“There ain’t no flies on my mince pies.”

Katie Higgins (Esther Williams) is the eldest daughter of a dairy-farming family of health nuts. Health tonic promoter Windy Weebe (Jack Carson) convinces her to enter a contest to swim the English Channel. After arriving in Europe, Katie finds herself pursued by a dashing Frenchman (Fernando Lamas). This is one of Esther’s best movies. She’s gorgeous here, as she always was — the Queen of Technicolor. The cast is great. Highlights include Barbara Whiting’s performance of the cheeky song “I Like Men,” Esther’s famous underwater ballet with Tom & Jerry, and pretty much every scene with William Demarest. It’s a very funny and charming musical comedy. A must-see for Esther fans.

Fans of Esther Williams, swimming and Tom and Jerry will be in heaven

Even in films with not-much-to-write-home-about stories (though a good deal of her films are still worth watching), Esther Williams was always watchable and more, with her swimming talent on film second to none. Tom and Jerry are two of my favourite animated characters, as a lifelong fan of animation, and a legendary animated-comic duo. Have always loved musicals too.

Williams is captivating in how fetching she is and she radiates in charm, her swimming talent hardly wasted. She has very clear chemistry with Fernando Lamas (though she has had partners with a little more charisma than he), and wonderfully supported by a peppy Barbara Whiting, an energetic Jack Carson and a perfectly cast William Demarest and Charlotte Greenwood.

‘Dangerous When Wet’s’ highlight is the sequence with Williams and Tom and Jerry, which is simply ingenious in every sense. Very close behind are Whiting’s “I Like Men” and the very determined and moving English Channel swim scene.

Furthermore, ‘Dangerous When Wet’ looks great, being beautifully photographed and designed and the colours are rich and colourful. The songs are not exceptional but they are very pleasant and put one in a good mood, but it’s the way they’re staged that elevate them to a better level.

The script is lively and perky enough, while Charles Walters directs competently. The story while meandering a little in pace towards the end makes for by far one of the more eventful, more plausible and more atmospherically warm and likable Esther Williams films.

Overall, great fun and charming, anybody who like Williams and Tom and Jerry shouldn’t miss it. 8/10 Bethany Cox

The Promoting Instincts Take Over

In Dangerous When Wet Esther Williams finds herself the oldest daughter of three in the Ozark family of William Demarest and Charlotte Greenwood, her sisters being Donna Corcoran and Barbara Whiting. Medicine show salesman Jack Carson is passing by and all the clichés about the farmer’s daughter start occurring.

When Carson comes calling Demarest starts bragging about his family all being physical culturists, Ozark style. When he gets to talking about Esther Williams swimming the Chattahoochee River which is nowhere near the Ozarks, Carson gets interested. He’s peddling some kind of snake oil medicine, but he sees Esther swimming the English Channel he sees her as one tasty bit of advertising. Carson’s libido ain’t totally put on hold.

But he’s cooled down a might when Esther meets a romantic Frenchman played by Fernando Lamas. Their real life marriage came much later. Not to worry because a French Channel swimming aspirant Denise Darcel has her eyes on Carson.

Dangerous When Wet is best known for a dream sequence where Esther does a water ballet with Tom and Jerry and some other cartoon characters. In her memoirs Esther says that one of her least favorite experiences was with Gene Kelly who gave her an awful time in the dance numbers in Take Me Out To The Ballgame. The muscles she developed as a swimmer were not conducive to dancing as she explained and Kelly knew this and still gave her a bad time. One of his innovations was a ballet with Tom and Jerry in Anchors Aweigh. I think Esther decided to show him that she could do what he could in her own field. And Esther certainly succeeded.

Jack Carson is his usual braggart type and William Demarest and Charlotte Greenwood show a thing or two with a little soft shoe they do. All and all Dangerous When Wet is a great example of the MGM musical and an Esther Williams water spectacular rolled into one.

The Pied Piper Storyline

Greed, corruption, ignorance, stupidity, and disease. Midsummer, 1349: the Black Death reaches northern Germany. A family of strolling players travel to Hamelin for the Mayor’s daughter’s wedding to the Baron’s son. He wants her dowry to pay his army, while his father taxes the people to build a cathedral he thinks will save his soul. A local Jewish apothecary tries to find a treatment for the plague. The Priests charge him with heresy and witchcraft. A mysterious minstrel (Donovan), who joined up with the players and who has soothed the Mayor’s daughter with his music, promises to rid the town of rats for a fee. The Mayor agrees, then reneges after the rats have been dealt with. In the morning, the plague, the Jew’s execution, and the Piper’s revenge come at once.—

The Pied Piper Movie Reviews

An extremely disturbing poem, a sorta half disturbing film. Both great but not for children!

The original 303-line poem “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” was published by Robert Browning in 1842, and wow it’s a doozy–thoroughly disturbing to the core and meant to be so. How we ended up with a cute bedtime fable is beyond me, but then again, in the original Sleeping Beauty, the Prince rapes her in her sleep. So.

Here in 1972, we get an excellent adaptation of the tale which retains much of the poem’s disturbing nature but with a slightly softened tone, offering glimmers of goodness and hope despite the backdrop of 13th Century inhumanity, greed, religious murders and child marriages. Yea, did I mention this is not for kids?

What offsets the disturbing story is largely the wonderful performance and gentle voice of Donovan who plays the titular Piper. Whereas in the original poem the piper was sort of a mysterious opportunistic rogue, here we get a mysterious character who is more of a wise, savior figure. The songs he sings (written by Donovan) are not just beautiful to the ear, but the lyrics are tranquil and reassuring.

This contrasts brilliantly against the disturbing story which is about a small German village that is besieged not only by the plague but, even worse, besieged by a consortium of corrupt politicians, priests and landowners who would tax their own grandmother’s false teeth. It gets even more disturbing as the plot revolves around a baron’s shifty son who is preparing to wed an 11-year-old-girl so he can collect the dowry and fund his violent exploits, and all the while his father the baron is squeezing blood out of the villagers so he can build a cathedral in his own honor–much to the drooling approval of the local bishops. This is heavy stuff. This is not a children’s fable. But it’s a brilliantly done film.

Not only are the acting performances riveting, from Donald Pleasance as the tyrannical baron to John Hurt as his loathsome son to Michael Hordern as Melius the scholar who is the sole voice of reason, but the camera style is thoroughly engaging as it follows the action gracefully for long stretches without a cut. If you watch this film, notice how the camera moves through the scenery almost like a silent character in the film, and this draws us tighter into the drama in a voyeuristic way. The sets are enormous and authentic, and as I mentioned the music is first rate.

On a subtle note, the film also attempts to nudge history back toward the truth. In the original poem, as well as for centuries, it was commonly accepted and taught that rats were the cause of the Black Plague, but only in recent years have we learned that the plague was spread by people basically drinking water out of their own sewers (go figure). And in this adaptation, the rats are not shown to be the vile “vermin” which Robert Browning accused them of being, but instead they are shown to be more like symbolic warnings of what will befall man if man doesn’t clean up his act.

There’s a beautiful, sobering moment where the piper talks to a rat and says something like “I know you must treat each other much better than men treat each other” and that short scene summarizes the spirit of this film. Yes, it’s disturbing, yes it shows the atrocities and cruelty that humans inflict upon each other, but there’s a subtle undercurrent that tells us wisdom will eventually prevail. Will it? I dunno, nearly 50 years after the film’s release we’re still waiting.

Grimmer than a Grimm fairy-tale.

Back when I was a (allegedly disturbed) young child, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” was my absolute favorite fairy-tale. I owned many tapes that were filled with bedtime stories and fairy-tales, but I mostly just listened to “The Pied Piper” because it featured fascinatingly morbid topics like the black plague, child abduction, rat infestations and a mysteriously sinister guy playing the flute. I was always convinced the premise of Robert Browning’s eerie poem could form the basis of a series of unimaginably dark horror movies, but unfortunately there aren’t that many. This British production, filmed on location in Germany, is a pretty great version but it’s incredibly obscure for some reason and I spent an awful long time purchasing a decent copy. Now that I finally own it, I’m both thrilled about re-experiencing the familiar story lines as well as surprised about discovering entirely new story aspects I wasn’t even aware of. The new (to me, at least) elements mostly handle about political and religious hypocrisy, so I presume that is the reason why they weren’t included in any of the fairy-tale versions I grew up with. But it remains a fascinating story and a fabulously engaging film, only suffering from obvious and regrettable budget restrictions. Director and co-writer Jacques Demy had a clear and personal vision of the story, and it’s definitely not a movie for young children to watch. Although never graphic or repulsive, “The Pied Piper” thrives on a disturbing atmosphere and it never evades any controversial themes, like the abuse of political power by the Catholic Church and the arranged marriages with minors. Donovan is excellent as the Piper, passing through Hamelin with a family of traveling circus artists. The burgomaster and the Baron (another splendid role for versatile super-actor Donald Pleasance) supposedly run the secluded little town, but they mainly obey the will of the uncanny red monks that always look over their shoulders. The friendly Jewish alchemist Melius is concerned about a threatening outbreak of the Bubonic plague, the power-hungry son of the Baron (John Hurt) is about to wed the under-aged burgomaster’s daughter for financial reasons and the Pied Piper is the only person capable of freeing the town from its rat infestation. The script of this film is well filled and requires your absolute full attention, but the elaboration of the different story lines is highly compelling and the dialogs are enchanting. The costume designs and scenery are terrific and genuinely take you back to the dark and unsettling medieval times. Donovan, primarily a singer, also provides the film with a couple of great songs (most notably “They Call me the Pied Piper” and “Life has its ups and downs”) and there are at least two near-brilliant and unforgettable sequences. Namely the rats breaking out of the wedding cake and a harrowing execution scene near the end. If you own “The Pied Piper”, it’s definitely a film to treasure.

thank God that it stars Donovan

A previous reviewer said that this version is probably closer to the original version of the story than any other version with which we’re familiar in this day and age. Given the portrayal of the bubonic plague, I would have to agree. And it only adds to the movie’s quality that they cast Donovan as the title character. I should warn you that this movie is rather dark – but never gross – and not even trying to be “cute”, so don’t expect that. Also starring Jack Wild, John Hurt and Donald Pleasance.

One other thing is that “The Pied Piper” is (as far as I know) not officially available on video or DVD. It is available in the video/DVD store Movie Madness, here in Portland, Oregon. If you’re ever in Portland, you should come to Movie Madness.

Alleluia! The Devil’s Carnival Movie Reviews

” Everything is Prettier …… After the Fall “

Oh that’s right Folks. Be Prepared…

After you take the fall. Once Again!!! You can’t help but fall for this over the top, Musical Madness. I’m a huge sucker for whats new. But, this is something all us Carnies have been waiting for.

Its been quite some time since we all have ” Slithered in the Mudd.” Its that wonderful music that has brought us all together once again. Alleluia is filled with new characters, and some of our old favorite ones. But don’t be fooled, this story has more that we could have ever asked for.

Our Dark Lord has a plan. And his carnies are preparing for the Word, since we last heard, “The Rules are Changing, We are going to War.” Heaven, God, and his agents are getting ready as well.

Alleluia will lift your dark little soul, and keep you coming back for more. The talent that is pulled together, to make this AWESOME project come to life, is more than we, or I, the fan. Could ever ask for. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!! I LOVE THIS SOUNDTRACK!!!!! AND I DON’T WANT TO MISS ONE STOP!!!! The feeling of going back to the Carnival once again is a feeling i cannot describe. I’m just so happy that’s its back.

So, when it comes to your town. Please, just come check out this peace of Alleluia AWESOMNESS…

Darren & Terrance and all The Members of The Devils Carnival. Congratulations. You’ve done it Again… That’s how a Carnival Grows my son 3:)

After the beginning…

I may have watched these on dvd, so the quality was not 4k….*spits * But this movie was just not as great as the first. The first film had a darker, more engrossing atmosphere, literal revolving around the Devils Carnival. This second movie, however, deals more with what happens afterwards, and shows some prequel material that lead to the whole situation in the movies long before. But the whole heaven having a 30s-50s big band kinda feel, was too lame. It just didnt work. What I would hope is that there is a third and final film and it gets darker and cooler. THe intro on the train with Alleluia being chanted and the souls furnaced to ferry the souls of the damned into heaven was the catchiest part of the whole movie. 5/10

Mixed Feelings But Still Loyal

Like many others I have been waiting less that patiently for this movie since the release of the original. In the end after a first viewing I’ve come out with mixed feelings tat leave me both excited and less than pleased.

When it comes to the production Alleluia blows its predecessors out of the water. The visuals are amazing an it’s clear that there was a much used budget for effects this time around. The easiest example I can cite is the opening sequence on the train and the ‘sky’ over Hell when we return below.

In that same spirit the cast is amazing. David Hasselhoff as an over the top designer was hilarious and Barry Bostwick could convey more with one bulging eye than some actors can in a whole movie. Adam Pascal’s Agent I found to be oddly sympathetic for being such a theoretically unlikable character. For Terrance Zdunich and Paul Sorvino I need only give a HAIL! and ALLELUIA!

My complaint is with the execution of the story. In this installment we really only got one Fable and to me it started to feel like (no pun intended) they were beating a dead horse. What’s more is we really didn’t progress in the overall plot for having a nearly doubled run time. Yes we needed to set up Heaven but it would have been nice to see it in a series of back stories as with Hell than one single Fable for one single character that leads to nothing more than the first shot of the war at best.

*SPOILER* If you are not an Emilie Autumn/Painted Doll fan… you might be better off just skipping this one.

Why Be Good? Movie Reviews

Delightful

Lost until the late 1990’s and then only restored in 2014, this is a real gem to have found. It’s a playful film that evokes the era of the roaring 20’s as well as any other, and has a nice bit of feminism in it as well. The two young people (the delightful Colleen Moore and dapper Neil Hamilton) push against the boundary of what was considered acceptable, and more importantly, she sticks up for herself, first with her parents and then with him. Her character, Pert Kelly (what a perfect name) the “hot potato”, asserts her freedom with this line to her father:

“Pop, listen to me! This is 1929 – not 1899 – I contribute as much money to this house as you do – and as long as I think it is harmless, I’m going to wear what I like, and do what I like! I want to go out, and dance, and have fun, as long as I can, as much as I can!”

She can take care of herself; when a sleazy guy comes on to her, she plays along but is always in control, but when a guy comes along that she does like (Hamilton), she’s not afraid to kiss him first. She’s confident, saying to her friends, “Sure, I’m good! I’m just naturally too hot for this old folks’ home!” At the same time, we see how her having fun and dancing wildly forces her to beware of being considered a “bad girl”, or to be taken advantage of by a man. She just wants to be herself and yet has to thread the needle to be acceptable to everyone around her. This leads to this fantastic line:

“You men! You insist on a girl being just what you want – and then you bawl her (out) for being it.”

Unfortunately, the feminist message is a little undercut by the women (“girls”) in the office who are late to work putting on pouty, little girl airs to try to seduce the boss, though I confess I found the scene amusing.

The plot is simple but it’s loaded with fantastic intertitles featuring 1920’s slang, and it’s got some nice art deco sets to go along with all the flapper outfits and dancing. While the film is a great time capsule of that era, the scenes of the younger generation struggling against the older are timeless. The fathers of both are shown to be too old-fashioned, but her mother (Bodil Rosing, who is wonderful) is more understanding, and has some really lovely scenes with Moore. In an interview for the film, Moore pointed out the hypocrisy of the older generation by saying “Is it any worse for a girl to call kissing ‘necking’ and admit she does it, than it was for her mother to call it ‘spooning’ and deny it?” Hamilton added, “It’s all in the point of view… Our parents probably scandalized our grandparents, and our kids will probably look back on us as a lot of old fogies.” It seems you can repeat these lines for every generation.

This film marked the end of an era not just for America, but for Colleen Moore, who would only appear in a few sound movies afterwards. She’s wonderful.

Is she a good girl looking to have a good time or just a good-time girl?

recently restored–combined missing disk with footage–Vitaphone Project

This film is a great example of a supposedly lost film that was found due to the so-called ‘Vitaphone Project’. Because early Vitaphone sound films consisted of both the film footage AND an accompanying record for sound, many movies seemed to be only available as sound discs or film footage. However, with the internet age, the Vitaphone Project has managed to track down BOTH copies of many films and film shorts–the record and film have finally been reunited! So, although “Why Be Good?” has been considered lost for years, here it is—for the first time in many, many decades.

Like many of these early sound films, it really is NOT a talking picture but a silent with a soundtrack. A few songs in the film also are sung live by the actors. Otherwise, it’s a traditional silent film. As for the soundtrack, it’s actually at times too invasive and generally too loud! I actually wish, at times, there was no soundtrack!

As for the film, it’s a romantic comedy about flappers–in particular, Pert Kelly (Colleen Moore). Pert LOVES to party and goes out all the time with her friends in order to dance. One night, she meets a nice guy, Winthrop Peabody Jr. (Neil Hamilton) and they fall in love. Later, she learns that he’s her boss at the department store! The problem is that Winthrop Sr. is worried that Pert might be a bit of a slut. After all, she loves to party, loves to dance and is clearly a flapper. So what’s next? See the film.

This is a pretty good film and is one of the last silent-style films from Warner Brothers. The story is good and talks about the double- standard for ladies–the need to be fun, adventurous, rather slutty and yet chaste! My only real complaint is the ending–which seems to come rather abruptly.

Silent Sounds Spectacular

On the 50th floor of a modern skyscraper in New York City, handsome young millionaire Neil Hamilton (as Winthrop Peabody Jr.) has a wild party to celebrate a new job managing his father’s department store. In a poorer section of town, perky flapper Colleen Moore (as Pert Kelly) dances at fast-motion to “Sweet Georgia Brown” in a Charleston contest. A clear winner, Ms. Moore is also one of the thousand “cuties” employed as a clerk at Peabody’s department store. Later, she hooks up with Mr. Hamilton at a hot roadhouse called “The Boiler”. Moore angers her parents by arriving home late, but she really lives a virtuous life. However, Moore is late for work and ordered to see the new store manager…

Moore’s last silent is very nicely produced, for its star, by John McCormick. Director William A. Seiter and his crew present Moore in a flattering light, and give us a tasteful peak at her underwear in a couple of scenes. Trying to make time with Moore before she meets Hamilton, amorously greasy Louis Natheaux (as Jimmy Alexander) is a stand-out. Carey Wilson’s story was a standard for the time. A pretty clerk getting attention from an (ideally, department store) millionaire was a common fantasy. The plot was well-worn, and doesn’t fit the “flapper” girl. Mary Pickford and Clara Bow had released finer films on the topic. Moore’s best rags-to-riches story is, appropriately, “Ella Cinders” (1926)…

This was Moore’s final “silent” film. She transitioned to the “talkies” as well-spoken, but without distinction. Moore was likely hurt by being so closely associated with a bygone era. She was #1 in the industry’s “Quigley Poll” of box-office stars for 1926. “Why Be Good” finds its star acting almost purely with the exaggerated silent mannerisms associated with silents. In the past, Moore demonstrated some of the subtly and style which would prove useful in all-talking pictures; but, here, she makes her preference known. The recently re-discovered print of “Why Be Good?” is spectacular, and it survives with its beautifully rendered “Synchronized Musical Score and Sound Effects” track. Let’s see more…

Wuthering Heights Movie Reviews

Modern beachy take on the material leaves a mess

MTV does the Emily Brontë novel in a beachy rocking take on the material. One day, Cate and Hendrix’s father (John Doe) brings home their new adopted brother Heath. Cate (Erika Christensen) and Heath (Mike Vogel) would fall in love. Hendrix (Johnny Whitworth) is an angry young man who hates Heath. When their father dies, Hendrix takes over and drive Heath away. Cate has a car accident and is rescued by wealthy neighbor Edward (Christopher Masterson). Edward’s conniving sister Isabel (Katherine Heigl) schemes to break apart Cate and Heath keeping Heath to herself. Cate would marry Edward. Heath becomes a rich rock star and his return causes havoc.

The acting is laughable for the most part. Erika Christensen is the only good part of this movie. Mike Vogel could be a passable douche but he’s a horrible Heath(cliff). He overacts in every scene yelling and screaming. He just doesn’t have the charisma. The production is acceptable for a TV movie. The music ranges from uninspired to horrible. The movie aspires to be so much more but ends up being a weak young adult melodrama. It’s an experiment gone wrong.

MTV, I beggeth thee: cease perverting the classics…

A perfect little atrocity…I doubt if a single shot lasted for more then the reglamentary-MTV 4.4 seconds. Woeful casting, worse even than in Kusminsky’s version (a reminder: he managed to miscast Juliet Binoche and Ralph Feinnnes). But, hey-the rich got what they deserved. Dark and brooding Heathcliff reduced to the state of a golden-locked angel, frail and angellic Catherine presented as a chubby, melon-breasted heffer, meek and weak Linton is a peeping tom, and innocent Isabel becomes Sara Michelle-Gellar’s character from Cruel Intentions. 15-year old Eddie Bauer and Abercrombie and Fitch donners-take notice. This thing was made for you. It is an hour-and-a-half long music video where everything is given to you; you are saved from the uncomfortable necessity of not even trying to understand the complexity of the characters, but even from initial shock at their actions. The actors tried, but, as I stated before, they were miscasted. Decent photography, but editing is on the level of TV production class in high school. I implore you all: read the book, or the cliffnotes even; watch the previous versions of it, even Kusminsky’s; but stay away from the numerous future reruns, during which you will not receive the benefit of the commercial-free premiere.

withering flop

I was skeptical when I first saw the Calvin Kline-esque commercials, but thought I’d give it a chance. So I’ve watched it, and all I can say is bleh. This movie was so bad. It’s rare that I hate a movie this much. Watching this flick reminded me of those funny scenes in Altman’s “The Player,” when the writers pitch their bizarre ideas to producers. I’d like to know which MTV producer decided that an hour and a half long music video adaptation of Bronte (but this time Heathcliff’s name is Heath and he’s a rock star, and Hindley’s name is Hendrix) would be a good idea.

Even that might not have been so bad, had they not gotten every other aspect of the film so horrible wrong as well. The direction must have been “you’re lonely, pout for me.” I laughed out loud during all the “serious” scenes and was bored throughout the rest. The camera work was jagged and repeatedly reminded me that I was watching a bad movie trying to be edgy. My theory is that the sound guy got bored and went down to the beach for a few beers with his boom — all I could hear in half the scenes were the waves. And in the other scenes, I wish that’s all I could hear. And speaking of sound, what they did to the Sisters of Mercy song “More” is absolutely inexcusable, then again, it’s inexcusable what they did to Bronte.

On the bright side, there was one entertaining scene — specifically the moment when Johnny Whitworth licked Katherine Heigl’s face — and if you can tell me what that scene had to do with all the rest of the story more power to you.

Rigoletto Movie Reviews

Absolutely breathtaking

It has been a long time since the last time I saw this movie. But yesterday, I got an odd feeling that I needed to watch it again. So, I watched it last night, and was–as usual–blown away by this beautiful movie.

Yes, it’s definitely a “Beauty and the Beast” story, but there are MANY movies who have used this typical fairytale storyline. And for once, for this movie, they used it right. Mr. Ribaldi was absolutely frightening at first, but as Bonnie grew to know his true self, so did I. And all I can really say is an echo of Bonnie’s sentiments after having heard Ribaldi’s heart-rending, sorrowful performance of “The Curse”: “No one can sing like that and not be beautiful.”

The ending is VERY predictable. Heck, the whole movie is predictable… But that doesn’t matter to me. I laughed, I cried. And when I have the money, I am buying the Rigoletto soundtrack so that I can sit all day and listen to the absolutely breathtaking voice of Joseph Paur–who I think is very handsome, by the way.

It’s really a pity that the sequel to this movie has not yet been distributed. I am crossing my fingers that it will see the light of day someday soon… And I hope that Joseph Paur is in it. I think I have a new favorite actor. 🙂

How is anybody giving this 10 stars????

Am I the only one who saw a grown man grooming a child throughout the whole movie? Maybe I needed to watch this as a child to like it, as an adult this is seriously disturbing.

Thank you, Jaime French

Jaime French reviewed this movie, so I had to watch it to see if it’s truly as bad as she said it was. 100% yes. Talk about problematic. This movie did not age well. There’s a lot of mixed messages, grooming, and plot holes. This movie is “ew”.

Live a Little, Love a Little Movie Reviews

A little less conversation, a little more singing would have been nice

Live a Little, Love a Little was a departure from the normal Elvis Presley travelogues, and this off-the-beaten-track trend continued for the rest of his film career (four films). It’s sexy with a more adult theme than usual. Even more unusual, it only has a few songs, including “A Little Less Conversation.” I say, if you’re going to sing four, sing a few more. It’s a movie, it’s Elvis, it’s not a drama.

Elvis plays a photographer who meets a strange young woman of uncertain name on the beach. His life then takes a series of bizarre turns. Michele Carey is the woman, and she’s not only beautiful but very funny as well.

The film is mildly entertaining. Elvis’ real life pooch Brutus has a supporting role. He was a superb actor!

Elvis’ strangest film starts out great, but second half weak

This must be Elvis’ strangest film. It starts off in high gear, throws in a lot of mysterious twists, features a beautiful and funny co-star (Michele Carey–where are you? We need you back!), and has an intriguing soundtrack which doesn’t sound remotely like anything else Elvis ever recorded–it even has a freak-out sequence, with the King singing a psychedelic song! I’m guessing that the creators of this film wanted to make a “swinging sixties” version of a screwball comedy, and they almost succeeded. For the first half, I thought I’d discovered a lost classic…or at least a lost camp classic! However, about mid-way through, the breakneck pace slows down, the weirdness goes away, and the rest of the film stumbles along like a mediocre sitcom. Still, no one could accuse this oddity of being a “formula” film, at least the first half. And this Elvis fan would much rather watch this or the equally quirky THE TROUBLE WITH GIRLS than watch GI BLUES or BLUE HAWAII. TCM showed this letterboxed, the way it should be seen, so you might want to wait a year or two until a DVD comes out…or at least until TCM has another Elvis festival and shows the letterboxed version at 3 a.m…rather than watch it panned and scanned. I think that anyone with the least interest in Elvis would enjoy watching this film, if only for the freakout sequence with the song “Edge of Reality.”

Singing Idols Of Two Generations

Without the musical numbers of which no Elvis Presley film could be without, Live A Little, Love A Little plays more like one of those big screen Ross Hunter comedies that might have starred Rock Hudson. In fact the characters that Elvis and leading lady Michele Carey play bear no small resemblance to the ones played by Hudson and Paula Prentiss in one of my favorite of Hudson’s comedies, Man’s Favorite Sport.

A chance encounter at the beach with a very kookie girl played by Carey leaves Elvis’s life in total chaos. He finds himself working two full time jobs as a photographer at the same time just to keep up with his new mode of upscale living. Of course in the end she tones it down a bit when she finds true love with the King.

Of course since this is a Presley vehicle, Live A Little, Love A Little has to have a score. It has four numbers the best of which is the song sung right at the beginning called Wonderful World. It’s a philosophical type number, the kind Bing Crosby used to have a specialty of in his films. Sad to say that the King’s time as film star was drawing to a close. Had this been done in the Fifties, these songs might have yielded a Presley hit or two.

As usual Colonel Tom Parker made sure that Elvis was given good support by some veteran familiar players. Next to Walt Disney, Elvis Presley and his manager were the great employers of veteran movie faces who were finding it harder and harder to get work. Such folks as Dick Sargent, Joan Shawlee, Sterling Holloway are in the cast.

Two more who play Elvis’s rival employers who work in the same building are Don Porter and Rudy Vallee. Porter plays a Hugh Hefner type hedonist publisher of skin magazines and displays a certain avuncular charm.

And Live A Little, Love A Little gives fans a treat to see singing idols of two generation sharing the screen. It would have been great to see Rudy Vallee and the King do a number together, but I suspect that the lack was by mutual consent. Vallee plays another variation on his conservative ad agency president from How To Succeed in Busines Without Really Trying.

Though Elvis’s vehicles were not up to what he was putting out earlier in his career, Live A Little, Love A Little is a nice bit of entertainment and the King’s fans will love it.

Jitterbugs Movie Reviews

A shadow of their former glory, but still rather watchable

Following 1940’s SAPS AT SEA, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy became free agents–selling their talents to studios such as Fox and RKO. While these and other studios were willing to pay them more than they’d been getting from Hal Roach Studio, the quality of all these post-Roach films took a significant hit. Unless you are a die-hard fan of the team, you really should watch their earlier stuff–it’s just so much funnier and better.

While JITTERBUGS isn’t a bad film, it’s a mere shadow of their former style and glory–mostly because it has too much plot and too much singing. The beauty of the older Laurel and Hardy films was that they could take very simple plots and milk it for all it was worth just by allowing them to slowly do their thing. Here, however, the film is very plot-heavy and like all these later lesser films, the duo are more supporting actors instead of the whole show. Here, Vivian Blaine and Robert Bailey take away from the focus on Stan and Ollie–with Blaine singing (way too much) and Bailey as a smooth-talking grifter. In the older films, Stan and Ollie were THE focus–supporting characters were never intended to have much personality and were there merely for the use and abuse of the team. Here, the audience is simply distracted by these lesser talents–and I wanted much more Stan and Ollie!!

Now despite these distractions, the film works very well on occasion. First, when the boys are performing as a two-man band, this scene is very clever and the music very catchy–so, of course, this small scene is never repeated and apart from this tiny scene, there is not Jitterbugging at all–despite the title! Second, there are some funny moments–particularly when Stan dresses up like Ms. Blaine’s aunt. While it may not sound all that funny, Stanley handles it well and you can’t help but laugh–especially when he utters the line “I feel so gay”–you gotta see it to appreciate it!

So overall, it’s a very, very mixed bag but an overall product that still has you wondering why the studio didn’t just let Stan and Ollie “do their thing”? Why insert other characters or include lots of distracting singing and show tunes?! With the greatest movie duo in history, it was insulting to given them material that just wasn’t up to snuff. And speaking of not being up to snuff, how about that floating gas scene where the wires were so obvious and visible?! Didn’t Laurel and Hardy deserve better than just some cheap stunt than looked third-rate?

Fun well written comedy.

This is an enjoyable well written comedy that has some great comical moments in it.

This is not a comedy movie that relies on the slapstick antics from Laurel & Hardy but it rather relies on its written comedy moments. It might disappoint the most hardened fans but to everyone well this should be a movie that you can find much joy and fun in. Especially when the boys have to play different characters in the movie; Oliver is forced to play a southern gentleman named colonel Bixby and Stan has to play Aunt Emily. In those sequence it shows how great the boys actually could act. They play the different actors without much difficulties and in a convincing way.

The movie is mostly carried by its story. It’s not the best story ever written but it works effective for a simple little comedy movie like this one. It’s well written and features some great comedy moments and situations. The movie starts to fall apart before the ending but the good beginning and fun middle compensate for this.

Obvisouly not the greatest and best example of a Laurel & Hardy comedy but it’s definitely better than most of their usual work from the ’40’s. Maybe if it had different actors than Laurel & Hardy in it, this movie would have a better reputation.

7/10

Its OK

Stan & Ollie are travelling musicians who run out of gas in the middle of nowhere and are helped out by a travelling salesman, Chester (Bob Bailey). He gives them one of his gas pills to put in their car and they decide to go into business combining their music act with selling these pills. When they try their luck in the next town, Chester meets Susan (Vivian Blaine) and she joins the gang. The plot then changes direction as we learn that Susan’s aunt has had $10,000 dollars stolen by crooks. Chester, Susan, Stan & Ollie are determined to get the money back and the film follows their efforts to do this as Stan & Ollie pose as different characters at a hotel, while Susan takes a job as a singer at a club.

There are some funny scenes and Vivian Blaine sings 3 songs. Its all completely unbelievable nonsense but at the end of the film you feel that you have been entertained.

A Piece of My Heart Movie Reviews

Höga förväntningar, besviken

Hade stora förhoppningar om den här filmen, det är flera bra skådespelare och bra musik. Men det känns B alltihop.

I want my money back.

I had high hopes, but this movie is so bad, you have to be a hard core fan of Ledin to even remotely enjoy the movie. The storyline is totally transparent from start to end, no room for surpises. The dialogue sounds like a dubbed movie. It is obvious that mist of the actors only did it for the money. I want my money back.

If Hallmark made a musical…

A piece of my heart (En del av mitt hjärta in Swedish) is a Swedish rom-com which looks like your typical Hallmark movie only somehow filmed in Swedish language. Businesswoman Isabella (beautiful, blonde) returns to her native town and runs into her ex-boyfriend Simon (handsome, blonde). Suddenly she realizes she’s still in love with him. But Simon loves Molly (sharp, shoves the cake into Isabella’s pretty face) and there’s Edwin who loves Isabella. Well…where to start? Some plot twists are really silly. The whole story involving Edwin and his unhealthy relationships with his mother is embarrassing and made me scream. Some actors are too old for their parts. Don’t they have young actors in Sweden? Jonas Karlsson is 50 but he plays a 30-something guy. What on earth is it supposed to mean? At least some songs are good, the views of rural Sweden are great and costumes are lavish.

Three Penny Opera Movie Reviews

A review from a German Student.

This movie is the classic story of Mack the Knife. The version I saw was in the original German, and subtitled in English. It was filmed as a barb towards Nazi Germany, however, since anti-Gov’t were forbidden the film takes places in London England. Our Hero, is a Thief. The Head of the Thieves guild. He and his crownies continually steal from the One bank in town. Mackie, likes to visit the Women of Ill Repute and they all know him, and the cops are all bought so they can’t touch him. He has intentions of Marrying the Daughter of the King of the Beggars guild, and all is going well. Until the Police chief gets aspirations of Arresting Mackie, and the bank they rob goes bankrupt. Fortunately Mackie has enough money to buy the defunct bank and his crownies can become the Tellers. This is an excellent old film, and I recommend it to anyone.

Great Poster Artwork – Extremely Poor Film

This film was picked up for distribution in the United States by Joseph E. Levine through his Embassy Pictures, and it premiered in a number of cities including Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Houston, Milwaukee, and Oklahoma City on October 14, 1964. The advertising campaign was conceived to make the film look like one of the big “roadshow” musicals of the era–indeed, the artwork used in the posters, newspaper ads, and the eventual RCA LP album is probably the best thing about the film. Business was terrible, in part because the film was dubbed and the synchronization between the sound and visuals was off, as well as the “washed out” look of the color. Some of the theaters pulled it after several days of poor business, in others it lasted only for a week, and it only got a few sporadic openings thereafter. I do not believe that it ever made it to a theater in New York City, San Francisco, Boston, or Washington, DC.

lifeless, disappointing production of an excellent musical play

I’ve seen several stagings of this musical play– even acted in it once in college– and I have enjoyed the liveliness of every staging. The movie, however, is quite dead. The characters are stilted and almost everything is presented in a dry and detached manner– so detached that the viewer can’t really appreciate the important ironies of the plot even while being hit over the head with them. I also felt that the camera work was very uninspired. This film is still worth seeing just because “Die Dreigroschenoper” is an excellent play; but, if you have a choice, I’d recommend that you go see it performed as a play.
