Troubled Water Movie Reviews

A Film About Second Chances

How do you move on from the loss of your child? Do you think it’s possible to if they were taken away from you and you never got to say goodbye? The film Troubled Water, directed by Erik Poppe, deals with the issue of child murder and the struggles of a mother to move on when the child’s killer is released early from prison. Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen plays Jan Thomas, the young man who was convicted of murdering Agnes’s (Trine Dyrholm) young boy, even though he adamantly maintains he is innocent. He is released from prison early on the condition that he interview for an organist position at a neighborhood church in Oslo. During his time in prison Agnes and her husband Jon (Trond Espen Seim) have adopted two young girls and are getting ready to move to Denmark. Quickly after his release and employment at the church, Jan falls for Anna (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) the church pastor and bonds with her young son Jens (Fredrik Grøndahl). However, fate intervenes when Agnes takes her class on a field trip to the church where she recognizes Jan, who has decided to go by his middle name Thomas to avoid recognition from the public eye. This climactic event spirals into the unraveling of Agnes’s focus and forward progress as she becomes determined to get Jan to confess to the murder of her boy and keep him away from Jens as she fears his life will end in the same tragic fate as her son’s.

The biggest theme found throughout the film is that of faith. It is physically present in the form of the church where Jan finds a job as an organist. His position in the church provides a paradox to Anna’s, as she is the church pastor and embodies faith whereas he claims he has no faith. His role becomes one of confession between himself and Anna and he finds he can slowly open up to her. Eventually this confessional role extends to Agnes when Jan finally confesses how her son died. Along with faith and confession is the importance of (self) forgiveness and atonement. I think Poppe purposefully placed Jan within the realm of religion so he could come to terms with his past actions and find some sense of atonement and peace with his life.

Another component of Jan’s lack of faith is baptism. Water becomes a second theme in the film and is heavily linked with baptism in multiple scenes. In the pinnacle scene when Agnes recognizes Jan in the church her class is learning about baptism, which Jan has never received. This sets up a final scene again with Jan and Agnes when they are in the same river with Jens where Agnes’s son died. Here we witness Jan’s confession to Agnes and his “rebirth” and baptism in the water as the two of them work together to save Jens from drowning. Beyond baptism, water is also used in the film as a marker of life and death. Agnes’s son dies in the river just as Jan is given new life in the same river.

Another crucial theme in the film is that of the outsider. Jan becomes the first obvious outsider in the film, as he is outcast from society when he is ruled guilty of committing a crime. When he returns to society the film focuses on his struggle to reintegrate back into society as a member and no longer an outcast and the church becomes a symbolic place for him to be welcomed. The second, less obvious outsider in the film is Agnes, as she is still struggling years later to find peace in her life and remain in the present with her family. She constantly finds herself reflecting back on her son’s death, which pulls her away from her family into isolation and despair.

A final theme of the film is music, specifically hymnals. Poppe made a purposeful move in the plot to have Jan learn to play the organ while in prison. The organ represents the church so it is appropriate that Jan uses the organ to discover and express his search for atonement. By learning to play in prison, Jan is given a second chance at life. The specific hymnals played in the church are very significant to Jan’s quest for atonement. When Jan is asked to demonstrate his organist skills for the visiting children he decides to play “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” This song is about forgiveness and it becomes a very symbolic scene in the film, as Jan is not only playing for children, he is also playing for Agnes. The children here symbolize Agnes’s lost son whom Jan seeks forgiveness from, as they are there to witness his revival and rebirth as a changed man.

Overall, this was one of the most powerful Norwegian films I have ever seen. Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen and Trine Dyrholm were cast perfectly for their roles and delivered stunning performances. I left the film screening in awe of the beautiful cinematography and flashbacks, in complete amazement of how this compelling storyline was brought to life. The only disappointment I had with the film is the lack of explanation for why Jan kidnapped Agnes’s son. However, sometimes the best films leave viewers with more questions than answers and this is definitely true for Troubled Water. I look forward to seeing more Poppe films in the future.

Do you think you’ll ever become normal?

In a nutshell, this film had some fantastic music, especially on the organ. It features great performance by Pål Sverre Valheim Hagen as Jan Thomas, a man imprisoned for a murder of a boy he says he didn’t commit; Ellen Dorrit Petersen as Anna, the pastor he gets involved with; and Trine Dyrholm as Agnes, the mother of the murdered boy.

The film also features some incredible cinematography, and brilliant direction by Erik Poppe.

It is about redemption and forgiveness; about starting over after a heinous crime has been committed. The fact that Jan Thomas continues to have flashbacks makes us believe that he is not as innocent as he claims.

A beautiful film about lives gone wrong, and lives damaged by evil.

Wonderful performances and score

Brief summary of the first 20 minutes: Thomas, a young man gets released from prison. He had something to do with the disappearance of a young boy. He finds a job as an organ player in the church of the town where he used to live.

Pic deals with universal themes such as guilt, love, expression through music, faith, responsibility, loss of loved ones and the value of family. Although the setting and some references are Scandinavian, this is a story that could have taken place anywhere in the world. I think it can touch sensitive people across many cultures.

It may not be the most original, hip movie that I saw in the last year. I have seen elements of the story before, and the pace is calm.

However, the structure and high quality performances keep things interesting until the finale. Much of the quality of the lead actors comes from body language and non-verbal performances. Also the casting of the smaller adult parts and child actors is simply top.

Some scenes in the movie caused a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes. I was moved. The general tone of the movie is serious and sensitive, but director Erik Poppe also manages to keep the mood light and hopeful.

I’m a sucker for good movie scores. The music is breathtakingly wonderful. I have never been an avid fan of the organ, but this movie has the power to make people fall in love with this instrument. Much of what Thomas is going through is expressed through the music. It also helps the audience to get involved into this perhaps not so sympathetic, mysterious character. Also the non-organ part of the score by Johan Söderqvist is touching and effective. I had at times brief associations with the music of Philip Glass (but only briefly) and Thomas Newman.

So it is to my big surprise, that the soundtrack of this movie – now one year after the theater release in Norway – is still not available on CD. I found Scandinavian bluray and DVD-releases, but no OST. I hope that somebody can fix this, because this is one of those soundtracks that I would simply would want to play again and again.

Humoresque Storyline

Paul Boray comes from a working class background. He has been interested in the violin since he was a child, which his father disliked since he felt it a waste of money, but which his mother supported. Into his adult life, Paul wants to become a concert violinist, and although he shows talent, he does not have the right connections to make it into the concert performance world, much like his longtime friend, virtuoso pianist Sid Jeffers, and cellist Gina, both who, like Paul, train with the National Institute Orchestra. Gina and Paul have a connection with each other, Gina who confesses her love for him. While performing at a party with Sid, Paul meets Helen and Victor Wright, their hosts. Victor is a perceptive but self-admittedly weak man, while his wife Helen is strong minded but insecure which manifests itself as neurosis. She constantly tries to forget about her unhappy life by excessive alcohol consumption. Helen becomes Paul’s benefactress, which ultimately results in a successful concert career for Paul. But the two also fall in love, a destructive love against the wishes of Paul’s mother and Gina. That love may not only destroy Paul’s concert career, but their lives as well.—Huggo

Humoresque Movie Reviews

A young virtuoso violinist and his patron fall in love.

First, and foremost, if you are a classical music fan you will love this movie. The score was perfect for the somewhat lame story going on between Crawford and Garfield. Neither, in my opinion, quite pulled it off as to who they were supposed to be. He, a moody and temperamental musician and she a lonely and desperate wife. The movie is worth the time for every single scene where Oscar Levant was in, especially when he was playing the piano. And yes, that was him. And yes, those were Isaac Stern’s fingers playing away. We never know who was doing the bowing, other than some other “famous” violinist, and those who play can tell when there were a few misses, but we ignore them. It’s all worth it just to see Oscar and hear all that beautiful music and see real musicians playing (the orchestra). Anyway, Boray, played by Garfield, is a natural prodigy and he somehow gets the attention of Helen (Crawford) at a party. She likes to support the arts, and we’re supposed to believe that she falls in love with him from the very beginning. Hard to tell really. He claims he loves her, but we all know what he loves is his music, and even the young lady, also a musician, who happens to love him too, realizes this. Now, that could be seen in her face. She knew that Boray could never belong to anyone. Then we have the ending scene, where, with the beautiful music of Wagner’s classic Tristan and Isolde, Helen makes her final sacrifice so that Boray can go on doing what he is meant to do. The tagline said this was like a soap opera, a real tear-jerker, but the only time I shed a tear was remembering Isaac Stern. There was nothing in the movie to make one feel oh so awful and sorry for Helen, nor Boray.

Absorbing story with flawless acting by Garfield

I was astounded by the virtuoso performance on the violin by John Garfield. I truly believed he was a multi talented man. I looked up IMDb and found out that they were using two doubles to actually play the violin. I am even more amazed that the two actual violinists by his side each played the bow and the strings separately. The effect was perfect to the viewers. The pieces selected were also of the type that could easily appeal to those whose knowledge and experience with western classical music is limited. Bravo Isaac Stern for this music. I am reminded of Fiddler on the Roof which also had this great violinist give us the pleasure of his performance. Oscar Levant is of course a pianist also and it is he who turned out to be multi talented.

Playing second fiddle to Beethoven

That sentiment sums up the frustration and disappointment of Joan Crawford about her love for and obsession with violin virtuoso John Garfield in an excellent film blessed with great acting and beautiful music. Crawford and Garfield are well-matched in this movie, as Crawford becomes Garfield’s patron and gives his career a financial boost but becomes hopelessly drawn to her protégé as his concert career takes off. The two principals circle each other warily, sizing up the other and lashing out verbally with accusations of ingratitude and selfishness with Garfield holding fast to his dedication to his music while Crawford begins a slow but steady decline into drinking and depression. Garfield’s tunnel vision concerning his instrument does not allow him to appreciate the love a young woman has for him, nor can he grasp his mother’s sage counsel and warning about his involvement with a married woman. The film has generous servings of music by Sarasate, Dvorak, Lalo and a brief but excellent recital of Franz Waxman’s adaptation of “Carmen”.

Christmas Song Storyline

In New York City, Kasdan Cresswell Academy is the outcome of a just happened merger between an all girls’ school with an all boys’ school into a coed school. By the start of Kasdan Creswell’s first academic term, not all aspects of the merger have been ironed-out. In what was already a threatened music program at both schools, Kasdan’s director of music Diana Thiessen and Creswell’s director of music Ken Stoddard still have music teaching jobs in the merger running parallel music programs, it not being clear what will happen to either of their jobs based on monetary issues, with the likelihood that both will have jobs by the end of the completed merger low. Diana and Ken already do not see eye to eye on anything music-related, Diana who teaches in an academic fashion primarily of the classics, while Ken wants his students to have free expression of music, his musical teaching bent toward the popular. The easily-stressed school principal, Jessica Gedler, suggests that the two submit their own individual entries to a television sponsored high school Christmas carol contest, the outcome of the contest which would go a long way to convincing the decision makers on who should be the school’s music director. The contest is to be a duo singing any Christmas carol in any arrangement. Diana’s two female students and Ken’s two male students are a disparate bunch: Liz Strait, the girl most like to…; extremely shy Amy Barnes, whose shyness is due to being overprotected by her parents in an effort to shield her from any emotional pain; Billy Warren, the golden boy with an ego large enough to fill a football field; and Carlo, an academically bright student new to the school who is having trouble knowing where to fit in due to being confined to a wheelchair. Because of their differences, it is difficult enough to bring each team together as a cohesive unit, that is until the students learn through the grapevine that their respective teacher’s job may be on the line based on the outcome, which leads to the view that the other team is the sworn enemy. Through it all, Diana and Ken are each going through personal issues of their own, specifically in not having an active social life. As hard as they try, they seem not to be able to avoid each other socially, that want to avoid based on most of their conversations ending in a philosophical argument.—Huggo

Christmas Song Movie Reviews

A Slightly Off-Key Christmas Song.

Another film that could’ve been made better with a slight alteration.

The thing that lets this movie down is the story, there are quite a few holes, which if filled, would’ve made this film better.

For example, there is one character whose resolve is said to be strong, but when challenged it dissipates quickly into the ether. The same character has beliefs that are quashed almost instantaneously. Even though it’s a minor character, had these points been resolved more realistically it not only would have strengthened them, but also the film.

On the upside, the actors do their characters proud and portray them well. The direction is nice and keeps the film moving along at a steady pace, which works well for a love story.

If you’ve not watched this before, and there’s nothing else on the telly, and it raining or snowing outside, the ironing’s been done, and the floors hoovered, then I say grab a drink (preferably alcohol) and watch this film in front of the fire.

Cooperation

The Hallmark Channel’s annual festival of Christmas movies begins with this effort. Gabriel Hogan and Natasha Henstridge are music teachers in two private schools that merge. Only one will have a job long term and it comes down to a competition over who has directed the best Christmas carol performance. Soon enough, all sorts of student and parents’ neuroses complicate the plot.

As is usual with Hallmark TV movies, Ms. Henstridge is the more buttoned-down of the two, preferring classical music and technique, while Mr. Hogan holds for creativity and feeling the music. However, both are presented as likable, competent teachers and closer to the middle of that range than most Hallmark movies. There are also several amusing bits, particularly one in which they keep getting matched by an online dating service. Both are likable and relaxed with their characters and the net effect, while no world-beater, is very pleasant.

Too Many Stories

The nicest thing about this film was it least it wasn’t about A POOR WIDOW WOMAN who finds love Christmas time. This film however suffers because it tells too many stories. The film would have been better served if they would of eliminated one story. In this film we had the following stories 1) The Commercialism of Christmas 2) Cutting funding to Arts Programs 3) Having your own voice 4) Is winning everything when someone loses 5) Opposites Attract in reality they are not so opposite

In this film 2 schools have merged. An all boys school and an all girls school. Each school has a music class but there is only money left for one teacher for the following year. The principle however has encouraged the music teachers to enter a local television Christmas Carol contest. If either teacher wins then they will be able to keep their job.

When word gets around school that one of the teachers will be let go then the students start playing dirty.

Now this film I give credit for being a little different but its one of those films you watch and then you won’t remember anything about after a good nights sleep.

Family Safe.

White Riot Storyline

Expanding her (White Riot: London (2017)) short documentary film, Rubika Shah’s energizing film charts a vital London protest movement. Rock Against Racism (RAR) was formed in 1976, prompted by ‘music’s biggest colonialist’ Eric Clapton and his support of racist MP Enoch Powell. White Riot (2019) blends fresh interviews with queasy archive footage to recreate a hostile environment of anti-immigrant hysteria and National Front marches. As neo-Nazis recruited the nation’s youth, RAR’s multicultural punk and reggae gigs provided rallying points for resistance. As founder Red Saunders explains: ‘We peeled away the Union Jack to reveal the swastika’. The campaign grew from Hoxton fanzine roots to 1978’s huge antifascist carnival in Victoria Park, featuring X-Ray Spex, Steel Pulse and of course The Clash, whose rock star charisma and gale-force conviction took RAR’s message to the masses.—London Film Festival

White Riot Movie Reviews

Evocative of a time of critical change.

This movie took me right back to the time. The killing of Blair Peach by the police SPG, ERIC Clapton’s unforgivable racism and the inspiration and hope of Rock against Racism were presented brilliantly. And the wonderful CLASH!

White Riot

Black Lives Matter has made a huge impact across the world over the last couple of years, this documentary was released less than a year before the movement really kicked into action, but it fits in with the important message very well. Basically, in August 1976, Eric Clapton told an audience in Birmingham he agreed with Enoch Powell that immigrants should be sent home, using the National Front slogan “Keep Britain White”. Rod Stewart was also known at this time to make a hurtful and racist comment. In the late 1970s, black people and many from other cultures still faced derogatory public comments and hostility, especially during the anti-immigrant hysteria. In response, Rock Against Racism (RAR) was formed in 1976 when a group of artists united to take on the National Front. It started with public protests, with hundreds of people showing their disgust against the bigots and racists, and to make a point that all lives matter no matter what skin colour, religion, culture, or background you have. There was also the forming of Anti-Nazi League (ANL) going against the neo-Nazi generation. RAR’s multicultural punk and reggae gigs provided rallying points for resistance. Photographer Red Saunders was the founder of RAR and recruited typesetter Roger Huddle and office manager Kate Webb to assist his most ambitious headline-making event. A Rock Against Racism carnival was organised in Victoria Park, with a concert featuring punk rock band X-Ray Spex, Birmingham reggae band Steel Pulse, headliner Tom Robinson, and the popular rock band The Clash, along with many multi-cultural artists and musicians to perform on stage. In these days, there was no social media, so the event was only spread by telephone calls, some small journalism and word-of-mouth. However, the organisers were shocked by the response and gathering of both fans of the acts, and supporters against racism. In the end, the carnival was a huge success, attended by 100,000 people. This event certainly made history in Britain and around the world. It would be part of the future change in attitudes towards race and ethnicity. The movement undoubtedly helped the defeat of the National Front were defeated at the 1979 general election, but, as the final text says: “The fight is far from over”. This film combines archive footage and photographs taken from the day of the event, and the times leading up to it, and it is shocking to see the racist and horrendously nasty comments made by people at the time about people of colour and other cultures. This film delivers a powerful message, it has some good music obviously, and it shows how one event can make a world of difference, it is an interesting documentary. Worth watching!

Who this to your teenage kids, I urge you.

Brilliant. Ordinary people organising to defeat fascism. Without Rock Against Racism how many kids would’ve been drawn to the NF? If the same sort of energy – associating climate action with music – we’re around today, I wonder if we might affect more people?

Heartworn Highways Movie Reviews

Best movie on “real” country music!

I was fortunate to have been invited to the first screening of Heartworn Highways when it was shown to the New York press in 1981. A young struggling musician at the time, I was mesmerized by the power and soul of these contemporary singer/songwriters. This is what “real” American country music was supposed to be, not the sequin fellas and big haired gals of Nashville. Years later I would have conversations with Guy Clark at the Crow’s Nest, a little bar in North Florida frequented by shrimpers and other assorted swamp rats about the “voice” of country music. Who would have believed that these magical music makers would become decades later, the bedrock for today’s true country. The director, Jim Szalapski, had been a friend and roommate in my younger days rambling through New York. We lost Jim a couple of years ago and with his passing went the genius that I will be forever grateful to for capturing the soul of American country music. Somewhere on that heartworn highway, Jimmy’s still looking out from a Mini-Cooper for a good story to tell. I’ve waited twenty five years to seen this film again, twenty five years too long.

Excellent Country Documentary

This film is about the “outlaw” country music movement of the 70s, when artists rejected the glossy, strings filled Nashville sound and made poignant, gritty music. Guy Clark, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels and more are featured. Townes Van Zandt really steals the show, though. Out in his ratty trailer he shown drinking whiskey and shooting bb guns. He sits down in the kitchen and plays some songs for his girlfriend and his elderly black neighbor (whose interactions with Townes are amazing) and plays some of the most amazing music you’ll ever hear. There are also some great scenes of a little local ensemble playing in a bar. This is a must-see film for fans of Real Country Music. The pop pablum was crap then and its crap now. Real country will live on.

Magical

In 1975, James Szalapski decided to make a film about country music. Instead of going to the big names, he was put in touch, via a mutual acquaintance, with bassist Skinny Dennis, a notorious hell-raiser who left little musical legacy when he died a short while later, but who was much loved by his friends, who included many of the most talented up-and-coming singer songwriters of that time. Among them was Guy Clark, whose house was a meeting place for geniuses such as Townes van Zandt, Steve Young, Rodney Crowell and even Steve Earle, then completely unknown but starting to make his musical career. It’s this network, centred on Clark, that occupies the heart of this film. Szalapski films them going about their normal lives: none of them are rich, none of them are famous, and crucially none of them expect to become either of those things by appearing in this film. But their wholly authentic love for their music, and their wholly exceptional abilities, enliven one of the most genuinely intimate (and musically sublime) documentaries you are likely to see. Szapalski also films a selection of other rootsy artists, but it’s with Clark and his friends, all utterly obscure at that time, where the film’s heart beats loudest. The new DVD contains extra performances cut from the original; many are good in isolation, but it’s to Sazpalski’s credit that the material he chose for inclusion suits the finished film better than that he omitted. A fine film, and (with Townes now dead) a poignant one as well.

Disclaimer: This is not an objective review

If you’re looking for an objective review of this release, please be kind and skip this one. This one is not for you. If you want to know what it felt to be there, and what it feels to revive it watching this video… then you’re on the right place.

Argentinians are a very proud race… we like to think we stand aside from the rest of Latin America on behalf of our predominant European heritage, but the truth is our country is as poor as any other third world country, if not more. Many of those 200.000 fans fulfilled the dream of a lifetime being in that field… others like me had the privilege to have been there before the last time, in 1996, but for the most part there was no one who hadn’t been waiting less than a decade for this moment. And for the most part there was no one that spent close to a month’s salary to be able to be there. In any case it was not easy for most of us to pony up the dollar to be in that field. It was a privilege for just a few lucky ones. But go ’round and ask the poorest of those fans, and the answer will be invariably the same. It was worth the sacrifice. It was worth all those overtime hours at work. It was worth the 12 hour bus from 1200 miles away. It was worth it. And we’ll do it again if we have the chance. Because it’s AC/DC. Because those sixty-something year old grandpas teach the world a Rock ‘N Roll lesson every time they climb a stage. Because AC/DC teaches the world a humility lesson every time there is a microphone in front of any of them. That’s why these mates can walk down any street in any city in the world like any other guy in the world even when having a 22 time Platinum album (which is 3 more Platinums than the top selling Beatles album). That is called RESPECT. And that is something no dollar figure can purchase. That is something that was earned with four decades of devotion to the fans and to Rock ‘n Roll. In this video you will witness 200.000 crazy guys like me jumping up and down, banging their arms to the air and singing every chord that comes from Angus guitar or Brian’s throat. In this video you will witness why there is no other crowd like Argentina’s. We salute you, Angus, Brian, Malcolm, Cliff and Phil. We salute you, mates. Please keep on rockin’… we’ll be always waiting for you in this God forsaken part of the world with our hands in the air, ready to jump, sing, and rock ‘n roll.

Live at River Plate

We really wish my husband (73) and me (63) had been there in Buenos Aires, never been out of this country, would love to have seen it though. This is the best concert we’ve seen even just from our living room. We’ve got it up way loud and rocking out while Facebooking with my friends. This is one of the best groups to be created. We never saw them when they were new or even in person, but it’s better late than never. It is the saddest story about Malcolm, but I guess he doesn’t know the difference now, that illness has got to be the worst joke that life could play on him, he and Angus are genius musicians and we are glad the group is still putting out the music for us all. If you’re considering buying this DVD, I recommend it with gusto. Great show for all of us!!

One for the Ages!

Just finished watching this concert and all I can say is WOW! At 60+ years of age, every member of ACDC still rock their hearts and lungs out for a solid 2 hours! Unreal! And there are NO BALLADS to rest! lol The 200+ thousand fans jumping in unison was awe-inspiring and made you really FEEL the POWER OF ROCK! Yea, these guys won’t be a round forever but this concert video will truly be a testament to how these ageless wonders of HARD ROCK never forget the fans and the passion that comes from being on that HIGHWAY TO HELL! Many of us have been following ACDC since the beginning when Bon Scott was the front-man and although we miss him, Brian Johnson is no slacker and his growly voice is perfect for belting out all these anthems of rock! I SALUTE YOU ACDC!

El amor brujo Movie Reviews

A stunning film

This is a brilliant film, one of Carlos Saura’s best. It is essentially a ballet, laced with gorgeous music and moving photography. I’ve seen it three times and have enjoyed it more each time.

This isn’t a teen flick, of course, and will not appeal to everyone. But for people serious about music, dance, and drama, this shouldn’t be missed.

Setting the record straight

Formalismo, that school of Hispanic literature that emphasizes form as function, or form over function, has little to do with Saura’s EL AMOR BRUJO. This is Saura’s final work in his flamenco trilogy that began with BODAS de SANGRE and includes CARMEN. As with those two films, Saura bases this cinematic ballet on a previous work, Manuel de Falla’s EL AMOR BRUJO. The other two films in the trilogy were based on Lorca’s BODAS de SANGRE and Merimee’s and Bizet’s novel and opera, CARMEN. These three classical works are not examples of formalismo. Rather, they are prime examples of both the realistic and impressionistic schools of literature which under the creative mastery of Saura become sensual re-creations of love, passion, betrayal, and death. The love stories here supercede form and attain a thematic content worthy of the great literary works they portray. The starkness of the set is for symbolic purposes and not for form nor for function. The dilapidated, dusty set represents the emptiness of the soul that has lost great love, or has been deceived by a bewitching love. The set takes on color when Candela dances the Fire Dance, and again at the end when Lucia sacrifices herself to be the eternal lover of the bewitching ghost of Jose, thus setting Candela free from his cursed memory. Saura never lets us forget the tension between reality and fiction as the dawn rises on a new day over a theatrical set free of obsessions with death and love that bewitches the lover.

Tradition, Love, Passion, Betrayal, Death, Lust, Redemption

In a Gypsy village, the fathers of Candela and José promise their children to each other. Years later, the unfaithful José (Juan Antonio Jiménez) marries Candela (Cristina Hoyos) but while defending his lover Lucía (Laura del Sol) in a brawl, he is stabbed to death. Carmelo (Antonio Gades), who secretly loves Candela since he was a boy, is arrested while helping José and unfairly sent to prison. Four years later he is released and declares his love for Candela. However, the woman is cursed by a bewitched love and every night she goes to the place where José died to dance with his ghost.

“El Amor Brujo” is the shooting of a magnificent Flamenco ballet and third and last movie of the Carlos Saura’s trilogy. The story based on the ancient tradition of promising children to marry each other has love, passion, betrayal, death, lust and redemption, with the lead character tied and being consumed by her unresolved desire for her former husband. The lighting in the set is impressive and the dances and the music score are awesome. My vote is eight.

Title (Brazil): “Amor Bruxo” (“Warlock Love”)

Adele Live at the Royal Albert Hall Movie Reviews

A treat for the senses! A must see!

No only is this a visual feast with a real amount of thought put into the lighting , and the shots , but the stunning visuals are then coupled with the outstanding voice of one of today’s best singers.

This performance instantly becomes a favorite from the very first opening sequence, with a stunning dramatic entrance from Adele the show immediately feels intimate and cozy, it is like you are seeing her live.

The visuals are put together in such a way that you are literally able to feel emotion through it, you begin to feel excited with the right songs and the camera is portaging that beautifully with amazing shots. Then you are able at other times to just sit still and listen to the amazing songs that are being preformed and again this is reflected through the cameras movements. You are able to tell instantly that this performance and it’s visuals have been well thought out, well put together and well delivered to an audience though this outstanding DVD!

But the visuals aren’t all this has to offer, you are able to intimately experience a one of a kind performance from one of the most amazing singers out today.

I would recommend this to anybody to watch and to own.

The music, the band, Adele’s vocals and humor combines with the fantastic camera direction to give the experience of a lifetime.

Of all the concerts in the present music industry, this one was by far the simplest and that is indeed the highlight of it. The band was brilliant and the orchestra worked beautifully. Needless to say, Adele’s voice sounded expectantly top-notch but her humor was something of a treat for the audience. It seemed less like a singer singing for the audience and more like a bunch of friends singing together and having a great time.

Talking about the much vexed topic of the camera direction: Although the footage was prune to frequent change of camera angles, it did not bother me much. In fact, for me, it worked more then just fine. I found myself fully realizing the augustness of the setting, audience, music and the moments that made this concert such an amazing experience. Every shot of Adele was nothing but gorgeous, graceful and well cute. The audience looked very involved and connected with whatever was happening up on the stage.

The two concluding numbers stole the show. Someone like you just made you shed uncontrollable tears while rolling in the deep made the audience sing their souls out! The sheer emotions of these moments just makes this DVD an actual ticket to Royal Albert Hall where you can experience the entire beautiful night on your screen.

So, all in all a pretty well directed concert footage which truly captures the heart of this act both visually and musically. So don’t miss this one, sit back and let Adele do what she does best: Make you cry and laugh at the same time.

Rating 9/10

True Emotion – A True Performer

Let me start by saying I signed up here just so I’d be able to review this DVD. I’ve been an IMDb fan for a long time, but Adele was my trigger for actually registering.

She is one of the most popular artists today and, if you ask me, it’s rightfully so. This concert would probably mark the pinnacle of her career (at least when it gets to performing live). I mean, it’s the Royal Albert Hall, y’all! I liked it a lot. In fact, I was left with a huge smile on my face and such warmth around my heart. Such emotion, such delivery. As always, she stays true to herself and all she needs is a mike, a stool and her band (although I have no doubts she’d do well without them). So, when it comes to her, it’s a pure 10/10, no question about it.

I did have a little problem concentrating because of the fast switching between cameras in some up-beat songs. There were some moments when I wished to see Adele’s face and her expression, but was left staring at her drummer or a random person in the audience. Luckily, there were just a few of those moments and they didn’t manage to ruin the overall positive impression.

I just can’t help it, I have to give it a 10/10. It is very rare these days to witness such stage presence, emotion, ability and vulnerability all at the same time. I highly recommend it, even to those who are not Adele fans. Whether you like her or not, you cannot deny the fact that this was one amazing concert.

Almost forgot to mention her great sense of humor, she is so funny! Enjoy!

BTW (SPOILERS AHEAD!)

The Amy Winehouse tribute was wonderful, with all those lights in the audience and the disco ball – I almost cried there.

And then she got to Someone Like You and I couldn’t hold my tears back. I think it has a lot to do with the fact she talks about almost every song before she performs it and you get to see the story behind it. Plus the fact that she writes her songs and they all have a real deep meaning to her. So, when that audience started to sing, when she kept trying to keep it together (and managed till the end of the song) and when she finally broke down at the end – I just lost it. She was so genuine, pure and open to everybody at that moment.

So, once again, don’t miss it!

Mondo New York Movie Reviews

New York bizarro

This shockumentary focuses on the seamier side of NYC. It features cockfights, junkies, street hookers, S&M clubs, unhinged performance artists, drag acts, street comics, a voodoo ceremony and some ropey music acts. It features some controversial stuff for sure, with some animal violence and hard drug taking, while some of the people featured also appear to be mentally ill. Its not always interesting but it is always strange.

Perfectly Excellent

Brilliant documentary about the performance art scene in NYC.

Joe Coleman’s geek show might put a lot of people off though.

The best part of this was seeing Charlie Barnett (D.C. Cab) and Rick Avilies (Ghost, Carlito’s Way) do their great stand up in the park.

Both men had me rolling on the floor.

We follow a college age woman as she walks through the lower east side visiting performances and museums.

We see a voodoo ritual as well.

This should be kept in circulation for having the best footage of the late John Sex.

If you like weirdness, and aren’t hypersensitive, check this one out.

sicko psycho sucko sex … I loved it!

‘Mondo New York’ is sick, twisted, perverted and has absolutely no socially-redeeming value. I loved every second of it!

This movie purports to be a documentary look at some of the strange performance art in New York City’s East Village, but ‘Mondo New York’ is the cinematic equivalent of those old-time pornographic paperbacks that pretended to be medical case studies: the whole point of this movie is to wallow gratuitously in the excess and sleaze shown on screen.

One of the earliest (and best) turns in this film is the classically-trained Phoebe Legere, performing on her accordion a song called ‘Marilyn’ (about guess-which actress). Ms Legere has one of the most beautiful singing voices I’ve ever heard, and the fact that this voice emerges from an incredibly sexy body makes things even more interesting. By the end of her song, Ms Legere is lying supine on the floor and pumping her accordion in a way that seems downright lascivious, while flailing her legs and never skipping a beat. Her revealing costume makes it clear that she shaves.

A more surprising turn (slightly less enjoyable) is provided by performance artist Ann Magnuson, who shows up in a bright sunlit exterior that looks like Central Park (strange, as this movie is set in the East Village on a dark night). Magnuson is wearing an elaborate fairy-princess get-up, and reciting a saccharine fairy tale. This is very much a departure from Ann Magnuson’s usual ‘performance art’, which I’ve seen onstage.

WARNING: Don’t eat anything during Karen Finley’s routine. Nor a couple of the others.

The one thing I didn’t like about ‘Mondo New York’ was its hypocritical framing device. We see a very attractive young blonde woman (Shannah Laumeister) who strides from one alternative-theatre venue to another, in the Alphabet City region of lower Manhattan. Her sequences are shot and edited in a manner that encourages us to identify with her. (An interesting decision, as the target audience for this film is probably young males who have no desire to identify with a woman.) She seats herself in the audience of a performance space, and the act begins. Now here’s where it gets hypocritical: whenever the act onstage reaches the borders of tastelessness (which happens pretty often), the blonde chick gets up and leaves, shaking her head in dismay … but the camera stays behind to catch the act in all its disgusting glory. Only after the act is over do we cut back to the blonde woman striding through the streets to the next venue. We see this happening over and over. Obviously, we’re meant to congratulate ourselves that we (like this blonde chick) have the good taste to get up and walk out whenever the onstage action is getting too tasteless … except that (unlike the blonde chick) we also stay behind and watch all the perversion. That dishonesty — not the perversion itself — is what I find so offensive about this movie. Still, she sure is a nice-looking blonde chick. Not as sexy as Phoebe Legere, though.

On second thought, ‘Mondo New York’ actually has some socially-redeeming value, because years from now people will wonder what all that fuss was about concerning something called ‘performance art’. This movie will show them … and it will prove that ‘performance art’ was usually something very empty and pretentious. But sometimes very sexy. I’ll rate ‘Mondo New York’ 8 points out of 10 … but keep the barf bags handy.

John Farnham: Finding the Voice Movie Reviews

Superb tribute- Nostalgic true story of endurance and belief in talent

My Review – Finding The Voice My Rating 9/10 .

In Cinemas now There are very few Australian entertainers that command the affection and respect that John Farnham and the late Dame Olivia Newton – John have experienced and deserved over both their long careers .

It’s interesting to note the similarities that both these iconic Australian entertainers and great friends shared together. Both were child immigrants to this country from England , both were born within 12 months of each other and both loved performing together . I remember their wonderful Main Event Concert in Sydney in 1999 in which they performed with another great voice Anthony Warlow . They also toured together in April 2015 in The Two Strong Hearts Tour performing their hits over 5 decades .

It’s understandable that Olivia Newton – John’s friendship with John Farnham and their mutual admiration for each other is often mentioned in this documentary as well as his loyal and endearing friendship with his manager Glen Wheatley plus the parting of the ways with his initial manager Darryl Sambell who is described in the film as not a very nice human being Glen Wheatley who sadly died in 2022 from Covid 19 complications long association with Farnham features in Act 3 of this amazing comeback story and is narrated with great archival footage by his widow Gaynor Martin.

I think this finely researched and entertaining tribute documentary is best described in three acts because it begins with Act 1 Johnny Farnham’s rise to fame after his initial hit Sadie the Cleaning Lady one of the biggest selling single hits ever released in Australia in 1967 when Farnham was only 18 .

Act 2 – was most surprising to me as I remember seeing Johnny Farnham perform in Leagues Clubs and dance venues and enjoyed both his stage performances in the musicals Pippin (1974) and Charlie Girl (1972 in Sydney .

I didn’t realise this was his downward spiral period which lead to record companies and radio stations refusing to play his records.

In the movie industry they refer to a star on the way down as box office poison I suppose in the music industry they refer to it as turntable terminal or just a has been?

This Act includes the 3 years from 1982 to 1985 that John Farnham replaced Glen Shorrock as leader singer in The Little River Band which wasn’t a happy period for the singer or the band .

Act 3 – John Farnham rises triumphantly like a Phoenix under the expert management of his friend Glen Wheatley . This is where he finds his true voice in 1986 with his solo single “Your the Voice” that held the number one position for 25 weeks and lead to the 3rd highest selling album in Australian history titled Whispering Jack that also bought long overdue International success for John Farnham.

Poppy Stockell who co wrote Finding The Voice with Paul Clarke also directed this 3 Act tribute to John Farnham . I hope Poppy receives the recognition she greatly deserves for this affectionate and cleverly edited 90 minute tribute.

This film documentary is not just a scrapbook or timeline of about the entertainer who has become one of Australia’s best-known and most popular performers.

John Farnham is the only Australian artist to have a number-one record album or single in five consecutive decades echoing that of Cliff Richard the UK.

I recommend seeing this film while it’s in the Cinema before it streams it has greater emotional impact than most similar documentaries about famous entertainers the archival footage and commentary is edited beautifully.

The Voice of a Nation

This may very well be the best music documentary of 2023. Farnsy has been a household name in Australia for decades, and rightly so. I never knew much about him, but everyone knows his iconic voice by sound. Exploring his upbringing, childhood, and the struggles he faced to get where he is today is a very emotional roller-coaster from start to finish. The friends he made along the way, the people who stuck by him, and those who didn’t, it’s all here in this amazingly produced film detailing the personal life of John Farnham – Australia’s voice. If you’re a fan of his work, either casually or dedicated, I implore you to see this documentary.

What a gloriousvsurprise

I don’t write reviews but I felt compelled to review this movie.

I went along for my husband because he likes Aussie music. But I am not a big fan.

I was drawn into the story and the background to how John Farnham became the legend he is. The earlier years were such a hard slog with very little recognition. It was only as he neared his 40s that his belief in himself as well as his manager and friend’s belief that things changed.

So really this story is about his struggle to be seen as a great singer and musician. It is also about the enduring friendship between him and Glenn Wheatley.

By the end I was tearing up thinking of his struggle and realising how good his music is. Which is more poignant now because of the loss of Glenn and Olivia Newton John last year. Then came throat cancer and the realisation that he will never sing again.

A very emotional tribute that is well worth watching. It also made me realise that we should be supporting our local bands at the pub or any venue.

Christmas at Graceland: Home for the Holidays Movie Reviews

A sequel that isn’t

This sequel isn’t because it jumps to completely different people with a completely different story.

For a movie that relies on so many themes that have been used way too often, it has some moments that aren’t derivative but a lot of what is unique has to do with Graceland. I was especially irritated with how much the controlling father-vs-the-spontaneous-nanny theme was exactly like several other movies, including some not around Christmas.

Adrian Grenier doesn’t seem like he is good at warm romantic. It sure didn’t seem like there was much chemistry between Grenier and Kaitlin Doubleday. I think Doubleday did her part and certainly did well as a high energy and engaging person.

The story lacks any serious conflict and the only tension is Harper’s job search and Owen’s business deal (which I never really understood), neither conflict being earth shaking. In general terms the outcome is predictable and there aren’t any surprises along the way.

Then there’s music and soundtrack. The soundtrack has several Elvis songs and the movie ends with a couple of musical performances. One was Doubleday singing Home for the Holidays with some backup from the kids. Her performance is enjoyable enough, but not really concert worthy. Chase Bryant does a short and not particularly Elvis-like Blue Christmas and then provides background to conversations that advance the movie.

Unfortunately, those conversations just don’t seem authentic. Likewise the outcomes don’t seem reasonable. In at least one case, it involves what would be a total personality change which I just don’t buy.

Overall, I like musical performances in movies if the actors have some talent. The Elvis background will be a plus for some and not for others. The story is without sparkle as is the acting. For a romance, this was one in which I really didn’t care that much because it wasn’t that great. 6 stars may be generous, but then I didn’t find anything that was an overwhelming turn off and good music always raises my ratings.

Irt’s actually a sweet movie…

But…

The storyline is much like every other Hallmark movie, which is really okay, I suppose, if not more than a little predictable.

I liked this one because the actors did a great job. I wasn’t sure that was really Priscilla Presley and had to look her up on here. She’s had way too much work done to stay looking young and it’s had the effect of making her look like, well… A badly made doll?

Finally, the writer could use a thesaurus. They used the word “amazing” so many times (as they do in every single movie) it should become a drinking game.

The setting of Memphis is nice, as I love the city, but to make it a winter wonderland? Memphis is in the deep South and doesn’t get, or keep, that kind of snow. They’ll have one good ice storm a year, that shuts down the city for a few days, but it’s generally warmer there in the winter months. I realize the Hallmark Christmas movies are all about the winter, but really? Memphis with snow on the ground ALL the time? (And before anyone says it, I was married to a person from Memphis for 23 years. I’ve been there so many times, in all seasons, and have NEVER seen snow there outside of the usual January ice storm.)

Hallmark needs to re-think how they do these movies to shake things up a bit.

Makes Wonder Woman look like a rookie.

I certainly agree with the reviewers who commented about the lack of chemistry between the leads. Very lack luster as far as the romance was concerned. It was unbelievable that Gwyneth Paltrow-girl would give up her dream career as an international art-museum curator based in London (is that even a real thing?) that she technically was not even qualified for on the possibility of a future with single dad. They were not madly in love or even committed. Just a weak possibility at best.

The Dad would be forgiven if his primary attraction to her was as great possible mother to his 3 kids. The girl was so perfect and energetic that it was mind boggling. Visiting her sister to have family time, interviewing for a dream position, and volunteering to take charge of a Christmas extravaganza at Graceland would be more than enough for a mortal woman. But on top of all that, she steps in to take on being an au pair to a executive single dad who is losing connection to his children because of over- scheduling and inflexibility. On top of all that, she bakes yule logs, hand makes Christmas ornaments, provides expeditions to the kiddies, reorders Dad’s priorities, takes the kids for a personal Christmas event with Priscilla Presley, saves the Dad’s fund raiser for his corporation, and even steps in to be the stage entertainment (she can kinda sing) when the country star hired for the event is delayed due to weather. I’m exhausted just writing about it. Then she even has time to start a romance and look gorgeous.

Still, I can’t give this less than a 5 because I couldn’t look away. I was afraid I’d miss something.

Nirvana: Live at the Paramount Storyline

Five weeks after releasing what was to become the seminal album of a generation, Nirvana was on a nationwide club and small theatre tour that brought them to Seattle’s Paramount Theatre for a very special Halloween 1991 homecoming show. Launching the nineteen song set with a brilliant cover of the Vaselines’ “Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam,” the band tears through Nevermind hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Lithium” and “Breed,” plus earlier favorites like “School,” “Love Buzz” and “About A Girl” and a very early version of “Rape Me.” The Paramount concert is the only show ever shot of the band on 16mm film and has been mixed in 5.1 surround sound and stereo from the original multi-tracks. Witness the complete concert for the first time ever.
