Izo Storyline

We begin in 1865, when the Shogunate is on its last legs, but still capable of punishing its enemies. One is Izo (Kazuya Nakayama), an assassin in the service of Hanpeida (Ryosuke Miki), a Tosa lord and Imperial supporter. After killing dozens of the Shogun’s men, Izo is captured and crucified. Instead of being extinguished, his rage propels him through the space-time continuum to present-day Tokyo, where he finds himself one with the city’s homeless. Here Izo transforms himself into a new, improved killing machine, his entire soul still enraged by his treatment in his past life. His response to the powers-that-be, whose predecessors put him to death, is the sword.—nightwatch

Izo Movie Reviews

A Time-bending Thrill-ride

Sometime during the late Endo period, noted samurai Okada Izo is tortured and ritually slain upon a crucifix. His soul does not die, however, embarking on a period hopping journey through space and time. Fueled by bloodlust- and with occasional pauses for philosophical rumination- the vengeful spirit of Izo murders with impunity, slaying any and all who cross his path. Whether or not his appetite for revenge is satiated- and if his soul is cleansed by all the bloodshed- remains to be seen in the strange, stylish thrill-ride that is Takashi Miike’s ‘Izo.’

An action epic with a metaphysical foundation, ‘Izo’ is a bloody odd film from a director who specializes in them. Written by Shigenori Takechi, the film has a non-linear narrative structure that jumps through time periods like a springbok, and can be a little confounding and hard to follow. The journey the titular character goes on is intensely violent and frequently exciting, though uneven and imperfect. Throughout the film, thrilling battle sequences are interspersed with plodding, dialogue-heavy scenes that frankly don’t work.

While one can appreciate the fact that Takechi and Miike are attempting to add another dimension to the tale, amid the madness of time-shifting, gore-splattered fight scenes, philosophical ponderings are jarring and out of place. The narrative becomes imbalanced, and the film’s pacing suffers as well. Which is not even to mention the fact that the philosophy at the heart of ‘Izo’ is rather shallow and simplistic, and could easily be expressed in a more eloquent, understated manner. Fans of Miike will probably be left a little underwhelmed by the proceedings; some may even be bored.

Though, to repeat oneself, the action in ‘Izo’ really is pulse-pounding stuff. Expertly choreographed, the battles are fast and frenetic; and will surely have you on the edge of your seat. Federico Benvenuti and Ravindra Pratap Singh Ricky of the stunt team do marvelous work and the displays of swordplay in the film are breath-taking. In fact, the brilliance of the action unfortunately underscores again the deficiencies of the story and dialogue. It’s a real shame Miike didn’t have a screenplay to work with as strong as the action in his film.

What he does have is an emotive, off-beat soundtrack from Kazuki Tomakawa that is unforgettable and unique. Tomakawa periodically turns up in the film to serenade Izo and the audience, like the minstrels in ‘Cat Ballou,’ or Jonathan Richman in ‘There’s Something About Mary.’ Tomakawa sounds a little bit like a Japanese Tom Waits, and the intensity and weirdness of his songs and his performance suit the crazed events of ‘Izo’ perfectly.

The film also boasts stylish cinematography from Nobuyuki Fukazawa, who has for many years worked on the show ‘The Woman of S. R. I.’ His muted efforts give the film an assured, stark visual style that is arresting and admirable. The set and costume design is also striking, with the titular character’s main outfit being especially notable. Additionally, while Yasushi Shimamura’s editing is a little loose during the dialogue scenes, he cuts the battles together masterfully; and his work deserves praise.

Also praiseworthy is Kazuya Nakayama, starring as Izo. Nakayama has a strong presence that dominates the screen, and his performance is steady and impressive. He handles himself well in the fight scenes and manages difficult dialogue with a remarkable ease. The character and his motivations may be somewhat recherche, but Nakayama is consistently commendable. His supporting cast are all terrific, but get very little to do in comparison. Kaori Momoi and Takeshi Kitano are particularly good and, though on screen for a short time, leave an indelible impression on the viewer.

At the end of the day, Takashi Miike’s ‘Izo’ is a bit of a mixed bag. Though containing thrilling action sequences that will have you glued to the screen, the dialogue is mediocre and overly wordy. Additionally, the film’s philosophical cogitations come across as a little half-baked, and the non-linear narrative structure can be confusing. The film does feature a great Kazuki Tomakawa soundtrack and a strong central performance from Kazuya Nakayama, as well as fine cinematography from Nobuyuki Fukazawa. To cut a long story short, ‘Izo’ is a film both muddled and memorable; another unique offering from one of the strangest directors in cinematic history.

it is a ‘love it or hate it’ movie, and I love it and hate it in almost equal measure

After watching perhaps the most reckless, surreal, mystical-style take on the ultra-bloody grind-house samurai epic, I’m not too sure who is more relentless, its main character- the unstoppable un-dead/spirit Izo (Kazuya Nakayama, likely in the performance of a career, for better &/or worse) or its director Takashi Miike. It’s been compared to both Greek mythology and Jodorowsky’s El Topo, and I can definitely see credence in both examples. In the first half hour to forty five minutes, actually longer if you account for, um, story, you’re not sure precisely what the hell (no pun intended) is going on. Izo, at the start, gets crucified, and then we learn after a while (err, it’s pretty obvious) he was quite the warrior and swordsman, who is out for vengeance as he comes back as an un-crushable spirit. Later on, we get a view into what tags along with him, in a female form, as a ‘fragment’, but for the most part one can only try to assume that Izo is on a collision course to nowhere, a pure embodiment of nihilistic anarchy who could be the Terminator in blood-eyed samurai garb if he/it actually had the mission.

I can’t deny that Miike deserves an ‘A’ for effort on this sort of thing, but it’s also the kind of project that veers the closest of all the work I’ve seen of his so far to that most overused of terms- pretentious (albeit I haven’t dug deep enough into his oeuvre to make that definitive). I mean, really, what are we to make of cut-aways at varied, completely random times of newsreel footage of dictators and famous world wars and atom bombs going off in black and white, sometimes in reverse mode, or in sped-up mode? What about a guy who comes in and out of the (very loosely laid) story to do acoustic-guitar musical numbers? It does all connect, I suppose, to the sort of random madness and almost Superman-like ability to not get really that harmed, unless around his quasi-kryptonite of the order of the ‘Soul-fragment’. A lot of what ends up popping up as sort of the history of Izo, before he was turned into the ultimate grudge with a sword, would be really interesting on its own, but strung together like this with the rest of the picture made it frustrating for me. Perhaps I wasn’t ready enough for all of this, but for all of the virtuosity that Miike is going for with his bloody, full-blown surreal odyssey, only some of it works well while the rest falls into ‘huh’ mode.

But the rest of this picture is what’s almost teasingly ironic about Izo. As a swordplay movie, the kind that delivers the goods on action set-pieces and violence galore, doesn’t disappoint, and if anything it shows Miike knows this kind of picture, which is why in a sense he’s probably trying to lampoon it underneath the very dark and Gothic exterior. Nakayama is a real force to be reckoned with, and he works well in his all-too-limited role. It’s always hard to do variations on the same style of killing- slicing a sword in the blink of an eye, and sometimes seeing the (appropriately) blood-soaked and flesh-torn aftermath, or in an immediate cut-away- and Miike pulls out his entire arsenal of tricks, including a set piece with the one American actor- Bob Sapp- who barely puts up a front either despite his huge size. But even with the creativity in many of Izo’s murder sequences jarring and excitingly outrageous, the repetition becomes a little tiresome. And it wasn’t that the picture was too confusing, though it does contain that side of the El Topo, where it’s basically intentional for it to go in circle’s around people’s heads.

The messages that barrage the viewer though through the content (like in one scene where Izo is at a school and you-guess-what happens and there are cutaways to classrooms where kids are asked to define ‘love’, ‘nation’, and other ultra big words taken for granted) are what become fuzzy or just too off-kilter for their own good. For someone who is usually so sharp on the edge with satire, Miike here is trying to scrape up enough with the action to justify it being there, because, of course, Izo’s world is in some otherworldly plain of Greek tragedy, Buddhism, and other factions that are also connected to the true depravities and horrors of the world. But it’s too much on one plate, and there’s definitely the sense of overload. It’s the kind of picture where the director does, more often than not, stumble on his face with his own ambitions; that being said, I’d much rather see a movie by Miike that only reaches up so high to its ideals than for a lesser filmmaker to just churn out typical product. Izo is anything but typical product, and it follows no rules (and destroys much like its character), which becomes part of the problem, at least on a first viewing.

Too long, too sloppy, but worth seeing once

The Philadelphia Film Fest program guide described the plot of IZO as such:

“A samurai travels through time with just one goal: to kill every single human on the planet.”

That basically sums it up. A man takes a sword and hacks away at nearly all the people he comes in contact with. He stabs a military general to death with the help of some zombie soldiers. He slices his own mother’s body in half from the waist down. He kills some kids, he kills some businessmen, and he kills a real estate agent who turns out to be a vampiric demon. When he kills infinity (yes, infinity ITSELF, not an infinite number of people) and the movie STILL doesn’t end, things start to get a little tedious.

Knowing Miike, you’d be right to expect some outlandish violence, a high body count, and perhaps a mind-boggling plot from all of this. What you might not anticipate is a lot of philosophical mumbo jumbo, World War II stock footage played backwards and forwards, and a guitar player who appears every so often to sing throatily about elephants and flowers. (At one point the camera lingers on this guitarist’s face for a full SEVEN MINUTES or so without any cuts or camera movement.)

Though I think I may have liked Izo, I have many criticisms.

First of all, for a film about sword-fighting, IZO lacks both the beauty of HERO and the direct outrageousness of KILL BILL. Quite simply, the fights were poorly choreographed and involved too many cheesy stunts. Izo flies over his enemies a few times, just like the characters in CROUCHING TIGER flew, only less elegantly. Izo dodges a bullet in slow motion just like Neo did in the MATRIX. The sound of a heart beating played over fade-ins and fade-outs just like it does in every made-for-TV horror flick in existence. During the rare times when Miike WASN’T deploying effects that have already been clichéd for years, each sequence seemed to go like this:

1. Close up of Izo’s face 2. Close up of other guy’s face 3. Shot from behind other guy as Izo hits him in the stomach with sword 4. Close up of other guy falling down

For the first ten minutes I didn’t mind the lack of special effects or variety, but once I realized that there wouldn’t be any progression and that the film would go on like this for a full two hours, I began to feel rather antsy.

The repetitive fight scenes could have been alleviated by some decent cinematography. If you can’t give me an engaging plot, at LEAST give me something interesting to look at! But no. The whole movie had a very sloppy vibe, as though it had been rushed through production. Many of the shots seemed haphazardly composed or not composed at all, like arbitrary shots of tree branches and jittery hand-held action footage. Indoor shots were often over-exposed by light coming in from the windows but otherwise under-exposed. I sometimes had the sensation that brief flashes of stock footage were inserted to make up for gaps in continuity. Also, it could be that I saw a worn print, but the first half of the movie had a very brown, drab feel. Perhaps some sharp color could have livened things up.

So yes, the movie was boring, ugly and maybe an EL TOPO rip-off, but somehow I thought it was good anyway. Part of my positive opinion stems from the fact that I admire any director who has a dream and achieves it, no matter how wrong they may be to do so. Also, intellectually, this IS a very engaging film. Since Izo is so unrealistic as a character, the viewer is practically forced to understand his journey as an allegory. In my opinion, Izo represents the grudge mentality: when someone hurts him, or acts like they want to hurt him, he always reacts swiftly and lethally. When a person ignores him or approaches him in kindness (like the schoolteacher, a few of the women, or the children of the future who have learned that nations do not really exist), he lets them pass without harm. His general aim is to destroy anyone who claims to have more power than he does, including the Prime Minister and God. Through juxtapositions with World War II footage, we see that Izo’s attitude is linked with Japan’s stance during World War II: surrender is dishonorable, but by not surrendering, one is only asking for more violence. In order to stop war, one must cease to threaten it, thereby undercutting the formation of a grudge.

While watching IZO, I felt like I would understand the details better if I were more familiar with Japanese traditions and culture. My feeling was correct. After probing around the internet, I learned that Izo was a true historical figure, a samurai-turned-homicidal maniac. I also learned that the unusual style of music played by the guitarist (fanciful lyrics, anguished voice) is a distinctive Japanese genre that emerged after World War II in response to all the suffering.

Still, I would not recommend IZO lightly, not even to Miike fans. I’m not sure if the film is brilliant or terrible, but overall… life is short and IZO is long. Watch it only if you have the time or patience for such an undertaking.

Good Witch vs Bad Witch

Change is in the air in Middleton. Cassie’s running for mayor as her long-lost cousin Abigail shows up. Abigail is very similar to Cassie, at least in terms of her manner and mysteriousness. The scenes of the two of them subtly sparring are very well done. While Cassie’s preoccupied with her campaign, Abigail creates problems among Cassie’s family and friends. Meanwhile a proposed annexation of the town has Cassie and Jake on opposite sides, at least until Jake looks into the matter further.

This is the first movie in the series where Catherine Bell’s attempts at improving perfection result in noticeable differences to her appearance. Cheek injections and an upper lip that barely moves are the two most distracting changes. Performance-wise, she’s fine in this although the supporting cast and the guest-star steal her spotlight most of the time. Grandpa George is curiously missing from this one. It’s a really good entry in the series, possibly the best of all the sequels.

Love these movies but the inconsistencies are plenty.

It bothers me that the first couple of movies are all about Grey House to the point where it’s the focus of the first movie and she almost loses it in the second and the movie before this they make it a point to say that the grandpa, George will take over as half partner at Grey house to help run it.m so he can stay in Middleton. Then in this movie Grey house isn’t even shown and rarely spoken of, all the guests end up in the Russell house instead of Grey house where they should be and grandpa George isn’t in the movie and I don’t think even mentioned at all. Just pretty inconsistent and bothersome.

The series lost a bit of it’s sparkle with this one.

In the fourth instalment of The Good Witch series Cassie’s not so nice long-lost cousin comes to visit. Her character adds some new spark to a cast that seems to currently be going through an awkward phase. Their character development in this movie just wasn’t working for me unfortunately. And even the storyline was a bit non-existent.

This movie doesn’t feel as charming as the others and is somewhat transitional in the storyline. It’s just nowhere near as exciting. Although it wasn’t the greatest, I am still looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Hopefully they can recreate the charm of the original movies because it really is a lovely movie series.

The Good Witch’s Gift Movie Reviews

Another Cute Movie by Hallmark!!

Another cute movie by Hallmark. Perfect for the holiday’s!! Although predictable, they should make more of these light hearted movies. They are just perfect for any age. Catherine is so sweet at Cassandra Nightingale. Maybe not an award-winning movie but just right for watching with the family during the Christmas season!! Can’t wait to see what they have for us next year!!

My question is, where the heck can I get my hands on any of the sweaters Catherine Bell is wearing in this movie? They are fantastic!! There isn’t any information available on the wardrobe used in this movie. Is this available anywhere?

Beautifully magical and enchanting.

The third movie in The Good Witch film series is quite possibly the best one so far. It’s set around Christmas time which makes everything seem all the more magical and then add in a wedding. It’s incredibly exciting to finally see Cassie and Jake coming together in holy matrimony and the beginnings of their new little family.

There are of course the usual challenges this time in the form of poor time management and a bank robber. It adds another emotional layer to the film and makes you root for their success. Nobody wants to see anybody fail around Christmas and you can’t help but hope for a special Christmas miracle. I don’t care how many clichés they squeeze into these movies as I just can’t get enough of their feel good optimism.

Good Witch’s Gift is Hallmark with All Its Trimmings ***

Traditional holiday fanfare courtesy of the Hallmark Channel.

This is a continuation of the story of a witch and how she has helped the people of her local town. Engaged to the town sheriff, the story is basically how their attempts to set a wedding date are always thwarted and when they set the date for Christmas eve, events just don’t seem to go their way and it appears that the ceremony will have to be postponed.

It’s also a story of a former bank robber who comes back to the town after he is released from prison in an attempt to reconnect with his ex-wife and daughter.

As is the case with most Hallmark films at holiday time, it’s a story basically of redemption and human kindness. A pleasure to see that violence is missing.

Gandahar Movie Reviews

not typical sci-fi

I noticed this movie at a local rental place the other week and thought, ‘What on Earth is THIS?’

My dad has a book with 17,000 movie reviews–just reviews ranging from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs–and they gave it 2 1/2 stars–3 being good–so it was almost good (to them). They chastised the almost non-existent characterizations, which I agree; we’re given a character, we’re given about half a minute background on them, and then this is what the character has to do. I was surprised that they didn’t mention the almost non-existent voice “acting” (note the quotes), as everyone just pretty much mumbled their lines…even such a big talent as Glenn Close (playing the queen) didn’t help.

However, please note these are VERY minor gripes. I would’ve given the movie three stars myself. It’s not the typical sci-fi, with the stupidity of childhood geniuses and robots with feelings abound (and I don’t think the stereotypes of “oh no, it’s sci-fi AND a cartoon!” help either). It’s very imaginative, but pretty dark and apocalyptic; probably not for kids under the age of 6, if not 8.

And on a side note, there was some pretty good music in it, too, and a lot of it.

They Never Made Them Like This….

French animator Rene Laloux of “Fantastic Planet” renown, attempted to make another surreal sci-fi adventure with the 80’s “Ghandar” or as Isac Asimov and Harvey Wienstien decided to call it for those of us in the states “Light Years”, which since no… space travel takes place, and since the movie is about a fictional country called “Gandahar” is probably a bad title. “Light Years” I guess sounds more sci-fi-ish, and if this film was to succeed in the states(it didn’t) it was gonna need every bit of conventionality it could muster.

The story is a complex one involving the standard sci-fi tropes of eugenics, time travel, death, and utopia, and though it’s certainly more involved than most animated sci-fi (a good deal of the time were watching the characters talk), it’s really the visualization of the world and it’s inhabitants which makes this movie worth seeing.

Like “Fantastic Planet” before it, Laloux’s environments are some of the most alien that have ever been imagined. The landscape is often undulating Daliesuqe deserts, which strange trees which resemble simultaneously bodily organs and geysers, a young girl offering her breast to a new born who looks like a tapir, born out of a grown embryonic plant, a city of underground mutants who resemble Blemmyes, ancient African monsters with heads beneath their shoulders, an army hollow soldiers who turn people into statues, video camera like birds who can lift entire buildings in swarms, and of course a colossal mile wide sentient brain in the middle of the ocean.

Laloux uses sci-fi story structures to create, very evocative images that do not look like anyone else’s, ever, something few filmmakers in any medium or genre, can claim with straight face.

That being said the English voice acting is just decent, not great but decent, it keeps the story moving, but doesn’t draw you into any of the characters. “Light Years” like “Fantastic Planet” or the animated films of Svankmajer are more concerned with form than content, but not oblivious of the latter.

So if you like heady sci-fi, visually stunning design, and unique animation, this is not to be passed up. If not it’s probably not bad to see once anyway, just for the visual treat of it all, and the more I mull over the story, not the plot, I’m more impressed with how well and vividly it told me a story I’ve heard a hundred times before.

Truly original and forgotten classic…

‘Light Years’ is a work of sci-fi animation that really stands apart from the pack. In order to enjoy this film, one must have an appreciation of science fiction altogether. For those individuals such as Leonard Maltin, whom dismissed this movie as a pretentious ‘talky’ cartoon, you must understand that ‘Light Years’ tells a very human story about irresponsible inventions and ignorance in a completely ALIEN setting; this is the true magic of the film! I thought the dialogue was creative and the story was fascinating. The creatures and characters are beyond description, and the ending will blow you away. True sci-fi fans I think should dismiss Leonard Maltin’s review and rent this one!

Valentine’s Again Storyline

Florist Danny enjoys delivering all over town in person, to witness bouquets bringing joy to receiver faces. Advertising executive Katherine however barely notices either, obsessed with her job and living single with a cat, although it doesn’t make her happy. On the way home after a bad, romance-free Valentine’s day, having lost a major account, she consults a Gypsy seer. On top of the prediction to finally meet the right man, she gets a spell which she only starts understanding the next morning: it’s a time-loop to relive that day until she actually noticed Mr. Right and bonded with him, which clearly isn’t going to happen soon, even though Danny and she grow closer and his hedonism starts to fertilize her sterile mentality.—KGF Vissers

Valentine’s Again Movie Reviews

A groundhog valentine

Although the premise is not a new one, with the ‘Groundhog Day’ story being quite popular in film and television, it is a story that has been done well elsewhere and done to timeless ground-breaking effect in ‘Groundhog Day’. It was a nice idea too to base it around Valentine’s Day, which is a lovely occasion every year and one where it is understandable as to why anybody would want to relive it more than once. Being somebody who has that mindset with Christmas.

‘Valentine’s Again’ was quite cute and just scrapes the average mark by the skin of its teeth, but there was room for it to have been a good deal better than it turned out. This is a formula that has already been done a lot elsewhere and with much more freshness and to more inspired effect and ‘Valentine’s Again’ could have done a lot more. That sounds as though it is a bad film, but to me it wasn’t. Just not particularly good either and Hallmark did do better with their Love Ever After outings, as well as worse.

There are good things. It looks pleasing, with once again the scenery being particularly eye catching and one of the film’s biggest pleasures. The music is pleasant and doesn’t feel overused or spells out the emotions too much. It starts off quite well and quite cute and there are some amusing and heart-warming moments here and there.

Nicky Whelan and Greg Vaughan do more than acceptable jobs in their roles, particularly Whelan, and their chemistry seems natural and genuine. Marina Sirtis steals every scene she’s in and the easy standout of the supporting cast.

Other than her though, the rest of the supporting cast didn’t engage that much or seem particularly engaged. They were basically just there and doing the job but with not enough spark. Apart from some bright moments, too much of the dialogue doesn’t flow that naturally and tends to be on the corny and tired side. Wished that there was more development with the characters, the supporting characters particularly are genre cliches pretty much and nothing more, and the central relationship plays too much second fiddle to the ‘Groundhog Day’ gimmick.

Which could have been executed better. Due to having seen it done many times before and with nothing new done here, it did feel tired and is never particularly clever. The repetitions also could have had a lot more variety as it was like going round in repetitive circles.

In conclusion, has moments but merely average. 5/10.

Looking For Love

This variation on “Groundhog Day” gets the Hallmark treatment. It varies from the original in that a character—a gypsy fairy godmother—tells the lead character, Kat (Nicky Whelan), why her Valentine’s Day is repeating. It has to do with finding the right man.

As Kat relives the day, she tries to identify her possible life partner, but no one fits the bill. When she determines who he is, there is no spark. Some viewers may not like the choice Kat has to make for the relationship to work.

What you want in life may not be what you need.

I love a Hallmark movie with a strong life lesson. I liked this movie because of this. Admittedly I was getting a bit frustrated but it was worth it in the end. I am a giant fan of any kind of Cinderella type movie and that is why I watched this movie regardless of the low rating. I am glad I read the reviews to know this. It’s a great reminder of what is important in life.

The King and I Movie Reviews

Enjoyable-enough film with great songs!

“The King and I” was one of the films we had in VCD that I grew up with. I decided to watch this movie again since I had nothing else to do and I felt like taking a trip back down memory lane. Before watching this movie, I went on IMDb and did a quick search on it. When I saw the 3.3 rating, I was really surprised! That may be my biased self talking, but really! I was surprised since this was one of my favorite films when I was younger. But after rewatching it, I don’t think this movie was THAT bad! Cut it some slack!

Most people are complaining on how they killed the original movie with this remake. I think this movie was targeted for children. Those who haven’t seen the original version. In my opinion, I think this film stands well on its own, with its great songs. I found myself singing along with a few of the songs (‘I Whistle A Happy Tune’, ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Shall We Dance’) which I remember from my younger days.

Some of the characters may have been unnecessary like Master Little, the elephant and the monkey, but its their antics that keep the young ones entertained. This film certainly isn’t the best one out there, but the songs are really great! The animation isn’t that bad, either! I can’t believe this movie got a 3.3 rating. Really.

If you have seen the 1956 version, you will be disappointed!

I have both versions on video, and I’ll admit the 1956 version is much better. I had mixed feelings on this version, but I hated most of the plot changes. Many important bits that worked so well in the 1956 version were changed and replaced with hackneyed plot-holes. The saving grace is the songs, and the singing is passable. The best is Christianne Noll, and Barbara Streisand singing in the end credits was a treat. Back to the bad. The voice talents were OK, but there were a lot of dodgy accents. Miranda Richardson does well, and her character animation is good too. Martin Vidnovic was trying to replicate Yul Brynner, and in no way did he succeed. Adam Wylie has a false English accent, that was shown when he was singing, because his American accent was heard. Ian Richardson is a really good actor, but I was expecting more from him. He had lots of really good lines, but his delivery just felt a bit OTT. The worst character was Master Little, who was funny for only ten minutes, and then the occurring joke about teeth wore thin far too early. Don’t get me started on the animals. they were cute at first, but they served no purpose at all to the plot, especially Moonshee. As for the animation, most of it was good, but why on earth did they animate a sea dragon and moving statues that were only there for a couple of seconds, I didn’t get it! As for the romance between Tuptim and the Prince it was so unnecessary, and the romance between Anna and the king was painfully underdeveloped. And why did they change the ending? The ending in the 1956 version was so poignant, and this one was pointless. In conclusion, only watch it if you haven’t seen the fantastic Yul Brynner version, otherwise you’ll be disappointed. 5/10 Bethany Cox

What a Waste of Time and Money

Having two younger children, I try to take them to movies like this, sight or review unseen, when I can. They, like most kids, have seen the violence, heard the profanity, and fell into the lowest common denominator of most movies being made today. That’s what makes this such a disappointment. I like to observe their reactions and their responses and not rain on their parades. But all they talked about when the thing was over was the guy who kept losing his teeth (remember that from the original Broadway musical?), and the mango throwing monkey. This is their memory of “The King and I.” Both my kids have visited Thailand and I thought perhaps this would bring up some of the spirit of that world. Instead, we have this exploitative mess that throws out most of the cultural issues and the dramatic impact for a supernatural villain (where did he get these powers? The King didn’t have any, other than incredible athleticism). And, of course, is there a movie around that doesn’t have a Martial Arts component? I know that kickboxing is big in Thailand but…. I am generally very accepting of the things that are put out there for the kids, but this was terrible. A message to the producers: “Please, please, please, leave Rodgers and Hammerstein alone. I don’t want to watch an interplanetary war version of “Oklahoma”!

You Never Can Tell Movie Reviews

Amusing ‘screwball comedy’ which will appeal to dog lovers

‘Woof woof!’, that’s what I say. This is a film (variously called YOU NEVER CAN TELL and YOU NEVER KNOW) in which a deceased dog, a German shepherd, is given permission to return to earth for a limited time as a human detective to solve his own murder and to clear the nice woman, his former mistress, blamed for the crime. Dick Powell, in his most congenial mode, plays the returned dog, posing as a private investigator named Rex Shepherd who sits around munching on dog biscuits when he is not looking for clues. Yes, it all sounds ridiculous, but it is done with such a light touch and such good humour that it is a most enjoyable film. And it is of special appeal to those of us who believe that dogs are in many ways superior to humans anyway. The reason why everyone is so excited about the murder of the dog is that his original owner died and left his six million dollar fortune to the dog, and as usual there are some wicked humans scheming for that stuff, which is useless to dogs, called money. This was the only feature film directed by Lou Breslow (1900-1987), who was better known as a film writer. Not only did he write this film, but he wrote 78 others, including in this very same year, both BEDTIME FOR BONZO, starring Ronald Reagan, and MY FAVORITE SPY starring Bob Hope and Hedy Lamarr. Breslow must have felt very strongly about dogs to push himself forward as director for this film. There are some very amusing scenes in Animal Heaven (doubtless located at the Dog Star, though this secret is not revealed), and the whole film is not only most enjoyable but often hilarious. However, humourless people need not apply. If you don’t know how to laugh (and it is amazing how many people don’t, especially these days when dour humourlessness is on the rise), then go watch a war movie or something instead of enjoying this light-hearted romp. But the rest of us can sit back and have a good time watching Dog Justice being done and Dog Ethics triumphing over human greed. (If only we could set the dogs on today’s psychopathic bankers, now wouldn’t that be a good idea!) The actress Peggy Dow, who only appeared in films between 1949 and 1951, unexpectedly retiring ‘for domestic reasons’ just as she was really getting going, is charming as Ellen, whom ‘Rex Shepherd’ wishes to clear of his murder. What a loss to the screen that she dropped out like that. So sit back, munch your dog biscuits, and enjoy seeing how dogs can handle things when human affairs need straightening out.

Charming

I first saw this movie as a teenager on AMC during a lazy afternoon and it was an unexpected pleasure. When I read the brief summary of the movie, which read something like: “A murdered dog comes back to life as a man to hunt his killer,” I actually expected a somewhat hard-boiled detective movie, despite the obviously outrageous premise. And I had no idea who Dick Powell was. The movie turned out to be very light-hearted and I was thoroughly entertained. Many light-hearted comedies of that era (early 1950s) make the mistake of just throwing in a lot of cute scenes and dialog and, though this movie does feature such scenes, it also has a lot of quite clever humor that keeps even the more cynical viewer satisfied. Even the murder mystery plot has intriguing aspects. The movie has a kind of fantasy atmosphere throughout that I really enjoy, and Dick Powell was never more likable than he is here. This role was perfect for him (unlike his earlier role in “Murder My Sweet”–see my review). I highly recommend it for good family fun.

One of the Most Entertaining and Likable Fantasy-Comedies Ever Made

Imaginative fantasies for-the-sake-of-an-idea are rare in Hollywood. It is much easier to impute massive powers to a watch or show a watch that can stop time, without regard for the meaning, ethics or development of such ideas. “You Never Can Tell” is beyond any doubt one of the most delightful and unexpected fantasy films ever. It begins with a visit to Beastatory, where good animals go, a heaven for non-humans courtesy of David S. Hursely and the optical department; the animals are shown on a negative image with glowing eyes, speaking English. The film was directed by Louis Breslow and written along with David Chandler. It tells the story of an Army canine who is murdered. He comes back to protect his mistress, daughter of a wealthy man played by Albert Sharpe, in the person of beautiful Peggy Dow. he is in human form, calling himself “Rex Shepherd”, and his partner for the mission of mystery-detection and help to her is Golden Harvest, a palomino filly now in human form as Goldie, his assistant. The villain of the piece is ably played by Charles Drake, who is romancing Dow. While Rex munches kibble and Goldie outruns buses and visits her psychologically troubled horse friends at the track, they somehow manage to save Dow’s life and expose the reason behind Rex’s killing and the threat to her. Of course, Rex falls in love with Dow, she with him, and he remains on Earth and watches as Goldie gallops off toward Beastatory’s alternate heaven, turning into a palomino again as she disappears into the skies. Please don’t miss this delightful film; it is one of Powell’s best, and a genuine comedy-fantasy rarity.

Sune vs. Sune Movie Reviews

A real jewel!

I wish I had seen this movie as a child. Although I think I would not have been allowed to watch it with all this toy guns and sacred words…

But the mix of real weird humour, fantasy and deep emotions is outstanding. Sometimes you laugh with or about him, sometimes you real feel with him. And this is wonderful!

Maybe a kids’ movie but I had a great time

Although I am in my 40s I loved it. Sure it was kids’ movie, it was predictable but it was funny, it gave me some good laughs I would watch it again and it was far more better than some other movies from Hollywood or Disney productions… I liked the whole of the family.

Really bad

The new Sune movie is bad. Because it not such awful disasters as the three previous sune-movies. people tends to think the new one is good. It isn’t. Its really, really bad.

I don’t hate this movie as much as the three previous insults but it sure is not good. Sune is played by a boy that has total lack charisma. Hes mum and dad are totally uninteresting and Sunes mum seems almost there only to look good.

The “jokes” in the movie are flat and pointless. I saw this on a preview screening in Stockholm with my son. The audience was silent through the whole movie even though the theatre was filled with boys and girls in the supposed target age of 8-12 years.

The camera work is okay, the actors are ok, the problem is the script: its simply not funny. I don’t laugh one time and so did no no one else.

All in all this movie is a step in the right directions but almost any movie would be when compared to the three earlier dog of movies.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer Movie Reviews

Fantastic boredom

Normally I should have expect nothing less from movie based video games but this case I have to do it.

And there is not much to say about this game from Marvel Fantastic Four.

The game is based off the movie Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer the sequel to the 2005 Fantastic Four motion picture based off the Marvel Comics characters Reed Richards AKA Mr.Fantastic, Susan Storm AKA Invincible Woman, Her brother Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch and Ben Grimm AKA The Thing.

However after the first level you will become so bored and this is not a lie I’m selling.

Yes I only played the game on the Playstation 2 but it was enough to say clear away from the game on other platforms.

The style of the game feels like a Role Playing game like the X-Men Legends games which I haven’t played yet where you can play as anyone of the Fantastic Four

But that being said the game just get boring after the first level and after that just turn the game it just don’t have anything to appeal you long enough to even want to play it.

The controls are like slugs, the graphics are just plain at best the camera zoom so far away that you can’t see the action that take place in the game so often you relay on good luck the voice acting is just uninspiring the actors don’t feel like they should and the game play is just awful

Just do yourself a favor and avoid this game no matter how Fantastic cheap it is.

I give Fantastic Four Rise Of The Silver Surfer an 3 out of 10

Great game

This a great game, it’s old, but it’s still fun to play (My opinion)

worst sequel

So if you have just read my review of the previous game I always said that that game is underrated but not even its sequel and together with the film it is based on it is one of the worst superhero games Then this game does all the wrong things i.e. It doesn’t have the same onething that the first game had But why does it change a lot of all the things it had Yet in the three spider-man games they were attracted by Sam Laini’s films let’s not change all the things To say the second II and third have changed compared to the first but no very much has for example that there was no longer ifyou fall down you die but with this Fantastic 4 game they have everything changes for example there is no longer that playability for two players why remove it and then if the graphics of the first one were not as good as graphics but this second one is much worse then it is because there are only three bosses in the other gamethere were more Bosses to face It’s incredible this video game does the same thing as polymer clay i.e. Making everything worse please just play the first game and throw this sequel somewhere else to conclude rating 4.

What the hell did I watch?

I mean originally I thought it was an interesting concept, but quickly it began to follow no logic.

She was time traveling based on songs she heard? What?

Then the forced DEI cast didn’t help. Stop casting actors based on some checklist HR department handed out.

And like people are actually playing vinyl everywhere? I mean, come on. And someone actually said “what in the Luther Vandross name is going on.” None of these zoomers have heard of Luther.

It was shot well, and it had a nice mod to it, but I didn’t buy for one second any of the characters and their relationships. The lead is best friends with a drag queen? I mean, seriously. Never happened in real life and the only reason it did happen is because of the DEI requirements.

She still went to recovery meetings after 2 years of losing her boyfriend? Again, really? Do you know ANYONE that goes to meetings after losing someone?

The direction was just poor. They tried too hard too hard to make something emotional and didn’t succeed.

a deliberately vague movie?

And, to overuse a delicious quote from SEINFELD, not that there is anything wrong with that. The most interesting thing about this quite adequate film is the odd way reviewers approach it. It is as if no two pundits can agree on what they just saw? Some see a time travel film along the lines of THE TIME TRAVELOR’s WIFE. Some see a deconstruction of the role of music in modern society. Some simply see a useful vehicle to move along the career of the always photogenic Boynton (who, for example, is all most of us can recall from the otherwise tedious IPCRESS FILE). Some even suggest that the film’s auteur created this ambiguity deliberately to hold the attention. Which is, after all, the primary purpose of any film. Entertainment. Holding one’s gaze. This reviewer, like Boynton’s own character, sees all the possibilities at once, and each has merit.. But, unlike that character, will not attempt to change or alter any of them. The Pied Piper Storyline

Greed, corruption, ignorance, stupidity, and disease. Midsummer, 1349: the Black Death reaches northern Germany. A family of strolling players travel to Hamelin for the Mayor’s daughter’s wedding to the Baron’s son. He wants her dowry to pay his army, while his father taxes the people to build a cathedral he thinks will save his soul. A local Jewish apothecary tries to find a treatment for the plague. The Priests charge him with heresy and witchcraft. A mysterious minstrel (Donovan), who joined up with the players and who has soothed the Mayor’s daughter with his music, promises to rid the town of rats for a fee. The Mayor agrees, then reneges after the rats have been dealt with. In the morning, the plague, the Jew’s execution, and the Piper’s revenge come at once.—

The Pied Piper Movie Reviews

An extremely disturbing poem, a sorta half disturbing film. Both great but not for children!

The original 303-line poem “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” was published by Robert Browning in 1842, and wow it’s a doozy–thoroughly disturbing to the core and meant to be so. How we ended up with a cute bedtime fable is beyond me, but then again, in the original Sleeping Beauty, the Prince rapes her in her sleep. So.

Here in 1972, we get an excellent adaptation of the tale which retains much of the poem’s disturbing nature but with a slightly softened tone, offering glimmers of goodness and hope despite the backdrop of 13th Century inhumanity, greed, religious murders and child marriages. Yea, did I mention this is not for kids?

What offsets the disturbing story is largely the wonderful performance and gentle voice of Donovan who plays the titular Piper. Whereas in the original poem the piper was sort of a mysterious opportunistic rogue, here we get a mysterious character who is more of a wise, savior figure. The songs he sings (written by Donovan) are not just beautiful to the ear, but the lyrics are tranquil and reassuring.

This contrasts brilliantly against the disturbing story which is about a small German village that is besieged not only by the plague but, even worse, besieged by a consortium of corrupt politicians, priests and landowners who would tax their own grandmother’s false teeth. It gets even more disturbing as the plot revolves around a baron’s shifty son who is preparing to wed an 11-year-old-girl so he can collect the dowry and fund his violent exploits, and all the while his father the baron is squeezing blood out of the villagers so he can build a cathedral in his own honor–much to the drooling approval of the local bishops. This is heavy stuff. This is not a children’s fable. But it’s a brilliantly done film.

Not only are the acting performances riveting, from Donald Pleasance as the tyrannical baron to John Hurt as his loathsome son to Michael Hordern as Melius the scholar who is the sole voice of reason, but the camera style is thoroughly engaging as it follows the action gracefully for long stretches without a cut. If you watch this film, notice how the camera moves through the scenery almost like a silent character in the film, and this draws us tighter into the drama in a voyeuristic way. The sets are enormous and authentic, and as I mentioned the music is first rate.

On a subtle note, the film also attempts to nudge history back toward the truth. In the original poem, as well as for centuries, it was commonly accepted and taught that rats were the cause of the Black Plague, but only in recent years have we learned that the plague was spread by people basically drinking water out of their own sewers (go figure). And in this adaptation, the rats are not shown to be the vile “vermin” which Robert Browning accused them of being, but instead they are shown to be more like symbolic warnings of what will befall man if man doesn’t clean up his act.

There’s a beautiful, sobering moment where the piper talks to a rat and says something like “I know you must treat each other much better than men treat each other” and that short scene summarizes the spirit of this film. Yes, it’s disturbing, yes it shows the atrocities and cruelty that humans inflict upon each other, but there’s a subtle undercurrent that tells us wisdom will eventually prevail. Will it? I dunno, nearly 50 years after the film’s release we’re still waiting.

Grimmer than a Grimm fairy-tale.

Back when I was a (allegedly disturbed) young child, “The Pied Piper of Hamelin” was my absolute favorite fairy-tale. I owned many tapes that were filled with bedtime stories and fairy-tales, but I mostly just listened to “The Pied Piper” because it featured fascinatingly morbid topics like the black plague, child abduction, rat infestations and a mysteriously sinister guy playing the flute. I was always convinced the premise of Robert Browning’s eerie poem could form the basis of a series of unimaginably dark horror movies, but unfortunately there aren’t that many. This British production, filmed on location in Germany, is a pretty great version but it’s incredibly obscure for some reason and I spent an awful long time purchasing a decent copy. Now that I finally own it, I’m both thrilled about re-experiencing the familiar story lines as well as surprised about discovering entirely new story aspects I wasn’t even aware of. The new (to me, at least) elements mostly handle about political and religious hypocrisy, so I presume that is the reason why they weren’t included in any of the fairy-tale versions I grew up with. But it remains a fascinating story and a fabulously engaging film, only suffering from obvious and regrettable budget restrictions. Director and co-writer Jacques Demy had a clear and personal vision of the story, and it’s definitely not a movie for young children to watch. Although never graphic or repulsive, “The Pied Piper” thrives on a disturbing atmosphere and it never evades any controversial themes, like the abuse of political power by the Catholic Church and the arranged marriages with minors. Donovan is excellent as the Piper, passing through Hamelin with a family of traveling circus artists. The burgomaster and the Baron (another splendid role for versatile super-actor Donald Pleasance) supposedly run the secluded little town, but they mainly obey the will of the uncanny red monks that always look over their shoulders. The friendly Jewish alchemist Melius is concerned about a threatening outbreak of the Bubonic plague, the power-hungry son of the Baron (John Hurt) is about to wed the under-aged burgomaster’s daughter for financial reasons and the Pied Piper is the only person capable of freeing the town from its rat infestation. The script of this film is well filled and requires your absolute full attention, but the elaboration of the different story lines is highly compelling and the dialogs are enchanting. The costume designs and scenery are terrific and genuinely take you back to the dark and unsettling medieval times. Donovan, primarily a singer, also provides the film with a couple of great songs (most notably “They Call me the Pied Piper” and “Life has its ups and downs”) and there are at least two near-brilliant and unforgettable sequences. Namely the rats breaking out of the wedding cake and a harrowing execution scene near the end. If you own “The Pied Piper”, it’s definitely a film to treasure.

thank God that it stars Donovan

A previous reviewer said that this version is probably closer to the original version of the story than any other version with which we’re familiar in this day and age. Given the portrayal of the bubonic plague, I would have to agree. And it only adds to the movie’s quality that they cast Donovan as the title character. I should warn you that this movie is rather dark – but never gross – and not even trying to be “cute”, so don’t expect that. Also starring Jack Wild, John Hurt and Donald Pleasance.

One other thing is that “The Pied Piper” is (as far as I know) not officially available on video or DVD. It is available in the video/DVD store Movie Madness, here in Portland, Oregon. If you’re ever in Portland, you should come to Movie Madness.

Ninja Apocalypse Movie Reviews

American Antininjapocalypse

This movie is supposed to be about ninjas. Sadly, these guys don’t act like ninjas. They act like typical Americans.

Arrogance, macho attitude, constant bickering amongst themselves instead of fighting the enemy, no sense of honour and discipline, ridiculousness and stupidity… That’s what you get. It’s hard to enjoy a movie where all characters are like that. Add poor acting and some cliché melodramatic scenes that don’t make much sense, and you’ve got the whole picture.

The plot is obviously completely irrelevant in a movie called “Ninja Apocalypse”, so I won’t get into it.

As a side note, the group of our “heroes” consists of 3 white males, one woman, and one black guy. I’ll let you guess which two die first.

If all you care about is a bunch of guys fighting, go for it. The fighting scenes weren’t too bad. But that’s really the only thing this movie has going for it.

Mortal Kombat meets Resident Evil meets Light Sabers

This is an OK time-pass movie. Like if you don’t have a AAA title to watch or just want to have a casual watch you can look at this. It kinda like Mortal Kombat meets Resident Evil meets Starwars Light Sabers meet Ninjas.

You have your good Raidens and Liu Kangs and your bad Reptiles and Tanyas with Shang Sung. Budget as you can tell is quite low but still decent stuff pulled off. Story wise well just your average survival stuff.

In short, its not a total waste of time and for a video game fan like myself this could prove to be a nice watch since you can tell from where the movie makers were inspired from to make different set pieces.

The Warriors … underground

I guess I didn’t get the memo, that a re-imagining of The Warriors was on the way. But I did watch it and unfortunately it doesn’t hold up. There are other elements mixed in for and you have a certain dignity with Cary Tagawa, who’s not only reliable, but also brings gravitas (even underground, yes!).

The effects are OK, the fights are also OK, for the budget that this movie had. I guess if this was made in the 80s (yes, like the Warriors, but even by that standard it lacks quite a bit), I might have liked the group mentality and the quirkiness of the movie. Characters are OK too, not much acting and not really any surprises (twist!) …
