Darling Valentine

The 2016 Countdown to Valentine’s Day films were mostly quite good, and of a more consistent standard of most of the succeeding years’ Countdown to Valentine’s Day batches. With the only major misfire being ‘Dater’s Handbook’, which for me was one of the worst Hallmark films from that year, and ‘Appetite for Love’ was slightly above mixed feelings. Also saw ‘Valentine Ever After’ for having seen Autumn Reeser and Damon Runyan in other things.

‘Valentine Ever After’ is mostly a winner. It isn’t great and has its flaws, but it also has a lot of very good things and among the better 2016 Countdown to Valentine’s Day films along with ‘All Things Valentine’ (though this has the more appealing, if admittedly more typical, premise. Much better than ‘Dater’s Handbook’ at any rate. If asked whether ‘Valentine Ever After’ is recommended, the answer is yes. 2016 was a very uneven year for Hallmark, and luckily this is one of the hits.

It has its issues. The story is patchy, the predictability and silliness at times getting too much while the final act is contrived with a too neat ending.

Also found Runyan out of his depth here surprisingly, here he looks unusually stiff and has very little personality, coming over as dull and over serious.

Can’t fault the rest of the rest, loved the perky charm and down to earth quality to Reeser’s performance in a role that plays to her strengths very well while Eric Johnson excels against type. Don’t usually associate him as a romantic lead, but he is very likeable and charming and has a sweet and natural chemistry with Reeser. Vanessa Matsui enjoys herself without overdoing it. The characters are engaging and easy to connect with, with the sole exception of Runyan’s who is an over serious bore and unattentive.

Furthermore, it pleases visually. It is beautifully photographed and can’t say anything bad about the scenery. The music at least fits and doesn’t feel as overbearing, over constant or repetitive as some Hallmark scores can be. The script is the right amount of light hearted and heart-warming, with some non-mushy serious moments and genuinely funny ones as well. The banter is playful but not overwritten or hostile. The story is rarely dull and it has a warm heart and light hearted charm.

Overall, very pleasant and well done if not anything that blows the mind. 7/10.

Enjoyable

There is a lot of humor in this Hallmark formulaic movie. What sets it apart are the supporting characters; I wanted more of them and less if the leads.

The plot seemed a bit ridiculous at first but I just laughed it off and especially enjoyed the country music, dancing and cowboys. It was a little difficult to see Eric Johnson as someone other than Jack Hyde (Fifty Shades series) but I’m sure that’s just because I haven’t seen him in much else. I also really like Autumn Reeser, who always seems effortlessly charming and down-to-earth.

The Wedding March Storyline

Long divorced workaholic Olivia Pershing née Phillips, a Long Island stager, is getting remarried, to her pseudo business partner, equally workaholic Josh Johnson, a high end real estate agent. If they had their way, they would get married in a simple civil ceremony, however they are letting Olivia’s daughter, Grace Pershing, arrange a small weekend getaway wedding for them, no major questions asked on their end. Grace believes they are unromantic, epitomized by the fact that her mother desentimentalizes spaces for a living, hence the reason why Grace wants to arrange something special for them. Grace chooses to hold the festivities at the Willow Lake Inn, a lakefront Vermont country property, Julie Turner, on behalf of the Inn, making most of the arrangements locally. When the band that Grace chooses to perform at the ceremony cancels at the last minute, Julie even arranges for an alternate, namely her father, the Inn owner who has always had music in some form in his life, it which he does solely for his own pleasure now. The weekend starts off with a bang when Olivia arrives at the Inn to discover the owner is former pop star Mick Turner, her college sweetheart, they who were each other’s first love. Olivia performed in and wrote songs for his band at the time. Without Olivia, Mick and the band left when they got their first tour and a record deal, Mick and Olivia never having reconnected after that based solely on the circumstances of the time leading to a misunderstanding of the situation on both their parts, all this happening thirty years ago. Based on the way their relationship ended, their reunion is an uncomfortable one. One other person who will not be happy to see Mick is Olivia’s judgmental oft-married but currently single mother Nora Winters, who never thought Mick was devoted enough to Olivia, he focused too much on the music. Grace knew nothing of this past life of her mother’s, while Julie knew only of a woman her father dated in college. Recently widowed Mick, largely seen as the catch of the area of the middle aged set, has only recently felt ready to reenter the dating pool. Soon to be an empty nester and alone with only the memories, Mick is thinking about selling the Inn, which he has troubles telling Julie as it’s the only home she’s ever known. Grace, Julie and Duke, the Inn’s chef who was the band’s drummer, see a spark between Mick and Olivia, Duke who knew them as a couple. Although Grace likes Josh, she sees him more as a business partner than a husband for her mother. As such, Grace, Julie and Duke hope that the course of true love happens for Olivia and Mick to have a happily ever after, even if it’s thirty years later than when it should have.—Huggo

For whom the wedding bells toll

Part of me was not expecting all that much. Was not impressed at all with most of the 2016 June Weddings films, with the only previous above average one being ‘Wedding Bells’ (though ‘Stop the Wedding’ had its moments). ‘Ms Matched’ was especially bad and one of the worst 2016 Hallmark films. Still saw it anyway for Hallmark completest sake and also for the ever watchable Jack Wagner. It also sounded quite charming, the only premise of the June Weddings films that year that sounded appealing.

‘The Wedding March’ left me rather mixed. There are definitely good things, quite a lot of them actually with a couple of them being done better done than most Hallmark films, and it is above watchable. Of the 2016 June Weddings films, it is the second best by quite some way and the only other 2016 June Weddings film to be above average. Having said that, ‘The Wedding March’ also could have been quite a lot better though its flaws have been worse in other films of theirs.

Am going to start with the good things. Josie Bissett and Wagner are very charming leads and always engage, Wagner is especially good and loved how the film played to his strengths and got him to do what he is better known for. Emily Tennant brings a lot of heart to the film and the sister relationship is absolutely beautifully done, so sincere and relatable. The family relationships in general are very honestly and plausibly done and don’t feel forced or schmaltzy. There is some spark between Bissett and Wagner.

Did like the production values too, with the scenery being particularly eye catching. The music is very pleasant on the ears and fits within the film. The script flows well and doesn’t come over as cheesy or over-sentimental. The story is light hearted and heartfelt enough and the characters on the whole were ones connecting with.

It is though very formulaic and doesn’t do anything new really with very familiar territory, or at least on the romance angle. While there is chemistry there between Bissett and Wagner it could have been stronger and also more prominent within the plot rather than playing too much second fiddle to the family relationships. It is also slightly improbable with the age difference.

Furthermore, this reviewer absolutely agrees with everybody in regard to Bissett’s truly atrocious and blatantly obviously unreal wig, it seemed like an attempt to make her younger but actually aged her and made her look like too much of a china doll. Some of the dialogue is on the corny side and the ending is too neat and can be seen from some way off. While liking the characters on the whole, the ex boyfriend is annoying, uninteresting and adds nothing to the plot other than being a seemingly obligatory Hallmark plot device.

Overall, worth seeing and one of only two 2016 June Weddings film to be above average, though not a must. 6/10.

Happy story – terrible wig!

I liked the young women, liked the setting and the actors but that horrible wig distracted me in every scene. I kept expecting someone to rip it off so we could see real hair. It was the worst wig I’ve ever seen anywhere. What were you thinking, Hallmark, to do this to a very competent actor.

A real plus was the relationship of the two daughters; it made sense, they were charming and there was no fake getting upset with each other and having to resolve all that drama.

The sidekick chef was an added bonus as well; he was believable and his creations made me hungry.

Just couldn’t get over the wig – it spoiled a decent movie for me.

THAT WIG

I am here in 2021 watching the movie right now and I had to check online to see if anyone else noticed how BAD the wig on Josie’s head is. Sure enough… EVERYONE seems to have noticed it. I thought maybe she was sick and needed a wig for some reason. Not sure what that’s all about, but apart from that. It is the predictable feel good Hallmark movie. It all ends up great in the end. We need these movies once in a while. Especially when the worlds is not the safest place in these times.

Good Witch vs Bad Witch

Change is in the air in Middleton. Cassie’s running for mayor as her long-lost cousin Abigail shows up. Abigail is very similar to Cassie, at least in terms of her manner and mysteriousness. The scenes of the two of them subtly sparring are very well done. While Cassie’s preoccupied with her campaign, Abigail creates problems among Cassie’s family and friends. Meanwhile a proposed annexation of the town has Cassie and Jake on opposite sides, at least until Jake looks into the matter further.

This is the first movie in the series where Catherine Bell’s attempts at improving perfection result in noticeable differences to her appearance. Cheek injections and an upper lip that barely moves are the two most distracting changes. Performance-wise, she’s fine in this although the supporting cast and the guest-star steal her spotlight most of the time. Grandpa George is curiously missing from this one. It’s a really good entry in the series, possibly the best of all the sequels.

Love these movies but the inconsistencies are plenty.

It bothers me that the first couple of movies are all about Grey House to the point where it’s the focus of the first movie and she almost loses it in the second and the movie before this they make it a point to say that the grandpa, George will take over as half partner at Grey house to help run it.m so he can stay in Middleton. Then in this movie Grey house isn’t even shown and rarely spoken of, all the guests end up in the Russell house instead of Grey house where they should be and grandpa George isn’t in the movie and I don’t think even mentioned at all. Just pretty inconsistent and bothersome.

The series lost a bit of it’s sparkle with this one.

In the fourth instalment of The Good Witch series Cassie’s not so nice long-lost cousin comes to visit. Her character adds some new spark to a cast that seems to currently be going through an awkward phase. Their character development in this movie just wasn’t working for me unfortunately. And even the storyline was a bit non-existent.

This movie doesn’t feel as charming as the others and is somewhat transitional in the storyline. It’s just nowhere near as exciting. Although it wasn’t the greatest, I am still looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Hopefully they can recreate the charm of the original movies because it really is a lovely movie series.

Another Cute Movie by Hallmark!!

Another cute movie by Hallmark. Perfect for the holiday’s!! Although predictable, they should make more of these light hearted movies. They are just perfect for any age. Catherine is so sweet at Cassandra Nightingale. Maybe not an award-winning movie but just right for watching with the family during the Christmas season!! Can’t wait to see what they have for us next year!!

My question is, where the heck can I get my hands on any of the sweaters Catherine Bell is wearing in this movie? They are fantastic!! There isn’t any information available on the wardrobe used in this movie. Is this available anywhere?

Beautifully magical and enchanting.

The third movie in The Good Witch film series is quite possibly the best one so far. It’s set around Christmas time which makes everything seem all the more magical and then add in a wedding. It’s incredibly exciting to finally see Cassie and Jake coming together in holy matrimony and the beginnings of their new little family.

There are of course the usual challenges this time in the form of poor time management and a bank robber. It adds another emotional layer to the film and makes you root for their success. Nobody wants to see anybody fail around Christmas and you can’t help but hope for a special Christmas miracle. I don’t care how many clichés they squeeze into these movies as I just can’t get enough of their feel good optimism.

Good Witch’s Gift is Hallmark with All Its Trimmings ***

This is a continuation of the story of a witch and how she has helped the people of her local town. Engaged to the town sheriff, the story is basically how their attempts to set a wedding date are always thwarted and when they set the date for Christmas eve, events just don’t seem to go their way and it appears that the ceremony will have to be postponed.

It’s also a story of a former bank robber who comes back to the town after he is released from prison in an attempt to reconnect with his ex-wife and daughter.

As is the case with most Hallmark films at holiday time, it’s a story basically of redemption and human kindness. A pleasure to see that violence is missing.

Enjoyable-enough film with great songs!

“The King and I” was one of the films we had in VCD that I grew up with. I decided to watch this movie again since I had nothing else to do and I felt like taking a trip back down memory lane. Before watching this movie, I went on IMDb and did a quick search on it. When I saw the 3.3 rating, I was really surprised! That may be my biased self talking, but really! I was surprised since this was one of my favorite films when I was younger. But after rewatching it, I don’t think this movie was THAT bad! Cut it some slack!

Most people are complaining on how they killed the original movie with this remake. I think this movie was targeted for children. Those who haven’t seen the original version. In my opinion, I think this film stands well on its own, with its great songs. I found myself singing along with a few of the songs (‘I Whistle A Happy Tune’, ‘Getting to Know You’ and ‘Shall We Dance’) which I remember from my younger days.

Some of the characters may have been unnecessary like Master Little, the elephant and the monkey, but its their antics that keep the young ones entertained. This film certainly isn’t the best one out there, but the songs are really great! The animation isn’t that bad, either! I can’t believe this movie got a 3.3 rating. Really.

If you have seen the 1956 version, you will be disappointed!

I have both versions on video, and I’ll admit the 1956 version is much better. I had mixed feelings on this version, but I hated most of the plot changes. Many important bits that worked so well in the 1956 version were changed and replaced with hackneyed plot-holes. The saving grace is the songs, and the singing is passable. The best is Christianne Noll, and Barbara Streisand singing in the end credits was a treat. Back to the bad. The voice talents were OK, but there were a lot of dodgy accents. Miranda Richardson does well, and her character animation is good too. Martin Vidnovic was trying to replicate Yul Brynner, and in no way did he succeed. Adam Wylie has a false English accent, that was shown when he was singing, because his American accent was heard. Ian Richardson is a really good actor, but I was expecting more from him. He had lots of really good lines, but his delivery just felt a bit OTT. The worst character was Master Little, who was funny for only ten minutes, and then the occurring joke about teeth wore thin far too early. Don’t get me started on the animals. they were cute at first, but they served no purpose at all to the plot, especially Moonshee. As for the animation, most of it was good, but why on earth did they animate a sea dragon and moving statues that were only there for a couple of seconds, I didn’t get it! As for the romance between Tuptim and the Prince it was so unnecessary, and the romance between Anna and the king was painfully underdeveloped. And why did they change the ending? The ending in the 1956 version was so poignant, and this one was pointless. In conclusion, only watch it if you haven’t seen the fantastic Yul Brynner version, otherwise you’ll be disappointed. 5/10 Bethany Cox

What a Waste of Time and Money

Having two younger children, I try to take them to movies like this, sight or review unseen, when I can. They, like most kids, have seen the violence, heard the profanity, and fell into the lowest common denominator of most movies being made today. That’s what makes this such a disappointment. I like to observe their reactions and their responses and not rain on their parades. But all they talked about when the thing was over was the guy who kept losing his teeth (remember that from the original Broadway musical?), and the mango throwing monkey. This is their memory of “The King and I.” Both my kids have visited Thailand and I thought perhaps this would bring up some of the spirit of that world. Instead, we have this exploitative mess that throws out most of the cultural issues and the dramatic impact for a supernatural villain (where did he get these powers? The King didn’t have any, other than incredible athleticism). And, of course, is there a movie around that doesn’t have a Martial Arts component? I know that kickboxing is big in Thailand but…. I am generally very accepting of the things that are put out there for the kids, but this was terrible. A message to the producers: “Please, please, please, leave Rodgers and Hammerstein alone. I don’t want to watch an interplanetary war version of “Oklahoma”!

Fun

Ok, this is definitely not the best Disney movie out there, BUT it is the best one made for TV. It is a fun movie to watch, with characters you actually care about, and a few very witty lines “Do you think anyone in France actually misses him.” Yes a few characters were created souly to further the plot, Andi’s father isn’t very realistic, neither Fern, and Renee’s accent is horrible. Still it is a fun movie, Dean and Andi’s relationship is sweet. Her mother, and two brothers are great characters. Even though it is predictable, come on guys it’s a Disney movie do you think that they’re going to have her bike crash and her die or something, it is a very fun watch, so fun that it is possible to watch it twice in one day without getting bored (my sister came in for the very end and then wanted to watch the beginning). So watch if it comes on TV, or it even is a satisfying rental, but don’t expect it to challenge you, or to be anything more than it is.

Good film

This is one of the few movies where who goes with bike, especially with off road bike, is not ugly and bad … I mean dirt is within the context. All the actor perform well, even if not all are professional. I would like to have more film like this for our sons, the messages inside the story are correct, not free violence but a lot of competition even if in the real world female championship is not together with male championship, this is a poetic license but acceptable. We have some excellent pilot, Kiara Fontanesi, Flo Parrini, Alice Magnoli that are both eligible for actress and as pilot too… I would like to see again a film with some of them (…I believe stunts are not necessary).

To compete with the boys

I’m all for modern day films that take plots from the classics and you don’t get more classic than the Bard. If a film like Motocrossed will encourage young folks to check out 12th Night and the rest of the works of Master Will Shakespeare so much the better.

Motocrossed is the story the Carson Family who all enjoy the sport of Motorcycle racing including daughter Alana Austin. Her twin brother Trevor O’Brien is an up and coming young racer, but when he’s injured and can’t compete his twin sister takes so she can compete with the boys and show she has the right stuff for the support.

Austin does have her problems though, she has to win her parents and siblings over which also includes a most indiscreet little brother Scott Terra. Mother Mary-Margaret Humes gets on board as Austin appeals to the feminist side of her. It’s father Timothy Carhart that’s kept in the dark for most of the film.

It doesn’t help that there’s a champion Motocross rider in Riley Hill that she has an interest in that extends to more than sports. But being in male drag won’t help her cause.

Motocrossed has some nice cinematography of the young folk doing their racing and it’s fine family entertainment.

Completely unbelievable coupling

I don’t need to add the words “wooden” and “expressionless” when it comes to “Shep’s” acting … other reviewers have already pointed it out. The fact that this successful, driven beauty who is desperate to win her promotion and loves that her boyfriend is not only very handsome but is as driven as she is, would throw everything out of the window for a “camp counselor” she knew 20yrs before. Her first thought was that he wasn’t “successful” and that he was hiding away from his true calling. She gave up her dreams of writing children’s books in exchange for a super successful career in marketing so that makes perfect sense.

Her boyfriend’s career in land development is rising and she’s prepared for them both to do a bit of work on the trip but she’s also expecting him to propose and looking forward to it.

There is no chemistry between she and Shep and she has to work very hard to try to carry the movie. He acts as if he didn’t want to take the role…. and it should not have been offered to him. Perhaps he knew this too.

Poor Shep gets the girl but his trade-off is having to work in the rat race again in a suit and half-heartedly admit that family law (which she suggested was a “more acceptable” career) is so rewarding!!

None of this movie works except the backdrop.

Mindless enjoyment

The location of this was just what I needed in January. It wasn’t one of the better storylines but I’ve seen way worse.

My take on the zero chemistry situation- I’m wondering if the problem was the characters and not necessarily the actors. Right from the start I found I was not rooting for these two to get together. They each seemed to be living rather nice lives.

The end scene at the bus stop was where I saw major problems with acting. The male played it too cool against the females overly emotional dialog. But I’m wondering if he was told to play it that way.

Nice to look at, none of the feels.

The setting in Mexico was beautiful, loved looking at the beach scenery. Unfortunately, there was no chemistry between the main female and either man. It was good background noise while I was working.

A rom com that does what it say on the food container!

I hate cookery programs!

But I love programs about food and artists and chefs (who are, after all, artists in their own, er, kitchen).

If you’ve read any of my other reviews – which you probably haven’t – you might wonder how I can score this 7 whereas other more, arguably, ‘worthy’ and ambitious movies score much lower.

It’s by Hallmark so you know what you’re getting. It has no pretence. It sets out to do what it says on the tin and it does exactly that. There’s no subterfuge. It doesn’t try to be clever, misleading or something it’s not. It’s an enjoyable rom com and if that’s what you want to watch, watch this – it won’t leave you disappointed.

Great Green Globs

Over the past decade, comedies about chefs and cooks have become more common in the movies and the Hallmark Channel has created a few. In this one, we have another Hallmark romcom about a brittle, driven professional and a casual, inventive, uncertain genius — but this time, it’s the guy who’s the brittle, unhappy professional and the gal who’s casual and so forth.

Well, hallelujah for that. Danielle Panabaker is awfully cute and able to project her vulnerability very well. Shawn Roberts offers a fine two-toned performance: control freak in the restaurant and barefoot in the country. Apparently no one bothered to talk with the script writer, because the dialogue makes reference to Miss Panabaker as being controlling.

Well, occasionally, some subversion needs to go on to keep things fresh. Ron Oliver has gotten enough shots to make it visually clear that this takes place in San Francisco, the leads are good and the talking about food is intelligent. The result is more than good enough.

Tasty recipe

‘Recipe for Love’ (2014)

Opening thoughts: 2014’s ‘Recipe for Love’ did sound very charming even if the plot synopsis was nothing earth shattering. My Hallmark film completest quest (which has gradually overtime included Lifetime and UPTV), that is still ongoing with no intent to stop just yet, has been a very uneven endeavour but an interesting one with some real winners. Have liked Danielle Panabaker, Shawn Roberts and Pascale Hutton in other things as well, Hutton being the most familiar name.

Was a bit mixed personally on the premise. Really liked the setting and Hallmark have done food-related films very well many times, where there is a lot of fun, charm and relatability when done well. Everything with the ghost-writing sounded less appealing, and had potential to be mean spirited. On the most part, ‘Recipe for Love’ does a nice job with its premise while not entirely escaping the traps and is luckily closer to being one of the better 2014 Hallmark films rather than one of the worst.

Bad things: ‘Recipe for Love’ isn’t perfect. Some of the initial banter was a little over-heated and hostile. For me, it took a while for me to warm to Roberts’ character, seeming a little stiff and cold initially and the ghost-writing angle was not always handled very well due to making Roberts’ character too cruel and Panabaker’s bordering on naive.

Personally did find the ending on the too convenient side and too easily wrapped up, even for a story where it was easy knowing what was going to happen.

Good things: The film is compensated though by the performances. Panabaker is radiant and very charming and perky. Once he relaxed, Roberts is subtly charismatic and easy going, with witty, genuine chemistry with Panabaker. Most of the dialogue between the two was witty and amusing. Hutton is similarly very engaging and has one of the more easier to like characters and Karen Holness has fun without hamming it up too much as a character that could have been easy to overact. The characters are cliched and while some of the flaws are overdone the emotions and traits fitted the situations and much of what happens is light hearted and relatable.

While the direction is not innovative, ‘Recipe for Love’ is one of those films that doesn’t require that. It still shows a nice understanding and control of the material and the character interaction doesn’t come over as static.

Production values are well crafted and never look cheap, the scenery is especially nice. Hallmark tend to over-score their films, the music here fits nicely and doesn’t come over as constant or too loud. Certainly not to the extent where you can’t hear the dialogue. The dialogue here is suitably light-hearted and playful, while also having the right amount of seriousness without being melodramatic. The story makes great use of the setting, which has great nostalgic value, and while unoriginal and formulaic it is also lively and has a light and warm heart.

Closing thoughts: Overall, pretty good.

A real jewel!

I wish I had seen this movie as a child. Although I think I would not have been allowed to watch it with all this toy guns and sacred words…

But the mix of real weird humour, fantasy and deep emotions is outstanding. Sometimes you laugh with or about him, sometimes you real feel with him. And this is wonderful!

Maybe a kids’ movie but I had a great time

Although I am in my 40s I loved it. Sure it was kids’ movie, it was predictable but it was funny, it gave me some good laughs I would watch it again and it was far more better than some other movies from Hollywood or Disney productions… I liked the whole of the family.

Really bad

The new Sune movie is bad. Because it not such awful disasters as the three previous sune-movies. people tends to think the new one is good. It isn’t. Its really, really bad.

I don’t hate this movie as much as the three previous insults but it sure is not good. Sune is played by a boy that has total lack charisma. Hes mum and dad are totally uninteresting and Sunes mum seems almost there only to look good.

The “jokes” in the movie are flat and pointless. I saw this on a preview screening in Stockholm with my son. The audience was silent through the whole movie even though the theatre was filled with boys and girls in the supposed target age of 8-12 years.

The camera work is okay, the actors are ok, the problem is the script: its simply not funny. I don’t laugh one time and so did no no one else.

All in all this movie is a step in the right directions but almost any movie would be when compared to the three earlier dog of movies.

Game(ra) over!

Gamera: Super Monster, the last of the Showa-era Gamera movies, largely comprises of clips from the previous films (although there is also footage from a couple of unrelated animated films as well), with new scenes to tie all the battles together: three super space women, defenders of Earth, befriend a small boy and do battle with an evil woman from the Pirate Spaceship Zanon, who sends several monsters (Gyaos, Ziger, Vira, Jiger, Guiron and Barugon) to wreak havoc on Earth. Of course, giant spinning turtle Gamera is always on hand to give them a jolly good thrashing.

If you’ve already seen all of the previous Gamera movies, then Super Monster will be a crushing bore, Gamera defeating one monster after another ad nauseum before sacrificing his life by smashing into the Zanon spaceship (which looks suspiciously like a Star Destroyer from Star Wars). The nonsense in between the battles sees the three good space women, Kilara, Mitan and Marsha, beaming from one place to another and transforming from human to superhero by performing a stupid series of arm gestures; meanwhile, kid Keiichi releases his pet turtle into a river, plays his Yamaha organ (whilst singing the Gamera March), and is pursued by the evil woman, who hopes that the lad will lead her to his three female friends.

Produced by a struggling Daiei Studios as a last ditch effort to make enough cash to stay afloat, the film is so sloppy in all departments that it proved to be the final nail in the coffin instead.

I love this weirdness!

The first Gamera film in nine years – following Gamera vs. Zigra – this is somehow the strangest of all the movies. That’s an accomplishment.

This entire movie is made up of recycled footage from the entire Gamera film series, as well as Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999. This was an attempt to help Daiei get out of financial trouble. Bad news: the film failed to succeed at the box office and Daiei still had to file for bankruptcy six months later.

So they did what the Japanese do best. They kill off Gamera at the end.

Yes, the alien Zanon has come to enslave Earth and even the three Spacewomen, Earth’s defenders, can’t stop him. You know who can? A little kid. As always.

By the way – Mach Fumiake, who portrays the Spacewoman Kilara, was a pro wrestler.

That kid has a connection to Gamera, so he takes us back in time through all the films, as Gamera battles Gyaos, Zigra, Viras, Jiger, Guiron and Barugon before sacrificing himself to save the Earth from Zanon.

Depressing? Yeah. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched a Japanese film that ends this way and I end up thinking about it for years.

There is a funny scene where Gamera smashes up a Godzilla billboard. But this is the end of the so-called Showa Gamera era and there would not be another film with the giant turtle for fourteen more years until Gamera: Guardian of the Universe was made.

It’s sad. There’s no Gamera theme song. Only two minutes of new Gamera footage. And yeah – Gamera dying. You don’t need to be depressed. But I still found the YouTube link for you.

My favorite movie of all time (Warning! Review may contain some minor Spoilers)

Many Kaiju fans hate this film for its constant use of stock footage. In fact, most of the special FX were stock footage and the few new ones were really cheap, but if you can see past these flaws, Super Monster becomes a very charming, appealing, and entertaining movie. The plot revolves around a young boy whose pet turtle turns into Gamera, the Super Monster of the title,(or something like that anyway) in order to rid the world of an army of monsters created by the pirate aliens of Zanon who want to take over the world. Gamera is assisted in his mission by his former boy master and a trio of Space Women. Out to stop the heros is an evil space woman named Giloki. Stock footage battle after stock footage battle then ensues.

Ironicly, though, the stock footage adds to the film rather that detracts from it. This is the last of the classic Gamera series and re-showing all of Gamera’s battles is like taking a fun little stroll down memory lane. It is a thrill to remember a great series greatest moments. It kind of plays like a “memories of” special of a famous television series. The few new special effects sequences that were in the film were very well done considering the budget. I personally think that when Gamera arrives for the first time in the movie by flying over the city is the high point of the entire series. The human elements of the story were also very well done and very appealing in a child-like sort of way.

So in conclusion, you will probably hate this movie the first time you see it but if you give it a chance you will learn to like it. I just learned to love it and know it is my favorite movie of all time.

Enjoyable Japanese giant monster outing

Vicious behemoth beast Jiger attacks Japan during an annual science fair. It’s up to Gamera to stop the foul fiend. However, Jiger has injected the heroic flying prehistoric turtle with its parasitic offspring. Can two little boys save Gamera in time? Director Noriaki Yuasa, working from a fairly dark and twisted script by Fumi Takahashi, relates the entertaining story at a constant brisk pace, maintains a generally serious tone throughout, and stages the fierce and lengthy monster fight set pieces with a reasonable amount of skill and flair. Moreover, there are also pleasing moments of large scale mass destruction with Jiger demolishing a major city and surprisingly harsh bits of violence (Jiger cripples Gamera by shooting needles into all of his limbs and turns people into skeletons). The Expo Center in Osaka makes for a neat, novel, and interesting setting. The shoddy (far from) special effects possess a certain endearingly shoddy charm. Tsutomu Takatuma and Kelly Varis are solid and likable as the two little boys who help Gamera. Akira Kitazaki’s vibrant widescreen cinematography and Shunsuke Kikuchi’s bouncy score are both up to speed. Plus you gotta love Gamera’s incredibly cute’n’catchy theme song. A fun creature feature.

You Know…For Kids

This is a children’s movie. Is it a great children’s movie? No.

But, it is an enjoyable children’s movie. Sure Gamera looks like he was constructed at the last second out of an old shopping bag; and, Monster X looks like something that you pulled out of a Salvation Army drop-box. But, this movie has children as the main characters, doing the bulk of the heroics and making the bulk of the sound decisions…

There are a tremendous number of plot-holes in this movie; but, if you’ve got children, and a little patience, you can enjoy ninety minutes of pig-headed adults, brave children and flying turtles…

Also, there is a certain resemblance to the science fiction novel Blameless in Abaddon…anyone else notice?…

You’re inside the body of a flatulent turtle. Of course there’s a funny smell.

This Gamera entry takes awhile to get into, but once the plot gets underway, it’s a heck of a lot of fun. When a strange monster attacks the Earth and start sinking ships, Gamera comes to the rescue, but this monster is one step ahead of him. It shoots needles into Gamera’s body which creates a growing larvae inside him which then grows like a monster in the “Aliens” movies. Scientists create a little submarine in which a Japanese and Caucasian boy travel into Gamera’s body to locate the larvae and kill it so Gamera can become well take care of the other monster.

With a unique plot like this and plenty of unintentional humor, this ends up being an enjoyable entry in the “Gamera” series. The dubbed English version has voices that are either extremely shrill (the little American girl) or amusingly against type for the character that they are used for. The funniest sequence of course is the visit into Gamera’s body, and these two boys are certainly heroic. The bouncy score is an added plus. It’s comic book fun at its most thrilling level. You know that things are going to end happily, but with silly adventures like this, half the fun is getting to that conclusion.

Growing Up With Timmy Burton

Casper the Friendly Ghost is given the Tim Burton treatment in this computer-animated cartoon with a claymation look. The powers of cuteness and niceness triumph over the old-style order in which ghosts, vampires, mummies and so forth are sent to ‘scare school’ in order to learn how to terrify ‘fleshies’.

It is interesting that in the two decades since Burton’s askew vision of horror, as shown most clearly in BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, and the animated features THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE Christmas and THE CORPSE BRIDE, that view has become mainstream to the extent that Casper the Friendly Ghost can be given the same treatment. However, the result here is viewer-friendly kiddie farce, eked out not with black humor but with puns and ‘adults make no sense’ jokes. The result is sporadically amusing, and children are likely to be entertained by it. but adults can give it a miss.

‘Casper’s Scare School’ arguably has the best plot of the four prequels/sequels, but remains hampered by the very poor animation – which, even for 2006, looks awful. I did recognise a few of the voices, including Kevin McDonald (aka Pleakley) and John DiMaggio (aka Bender). All in all, though, it’s another pointless production – and, thankfully, the last… at time of review, at least.

If the other Casper videos weren’t such a burden to my eyes, I’d have given them better reviews. Nothing beats the originals as well as the 1995 film. Here, the Casper series is given new light and the humor is actually well-tailored to balance that of the first film and little bit of the others. Not bad, and it’s good to see now and then, even if the continuity still is off base but… oh well, that’s Hollywood. On another note though, the animation is quite unique and calls for a different kind of review. I think it’s a little creepy, but then again what’s not to like about from the animation crew who worked on the other Tim Burton films? Not bad at all.
