Boobs: An American Obsession Storyline

We call them by a hundred different names: boobs, knockers, jugs, hooters. We wonder if they’re real or fake, too small or too big, too exposed or too covered. And every year Americans spend millions of dollars on breast enhancement, from push-up bras to surgery. Why is our culture so captivated by this particular part of the female form? “Boobs: An American Obsession” is a revealing, humorous, often poignant investigation involving everyone from anthropologists to porn stars as we explore our culture’s fascination with breasts.—Nina Brownfield-Berry

Boobs: An American Obsession Movie Reviews

Didn’t think it could happen

I couldn’t imagine a film that makes boobs boring and unsexy, but this one does the job nicely. Couldn’t even make it to the end. Starts out well, and deflates like a bad implant.

Eyes Up Here, Fellas.

‘Boobs: An American Obsession’ stays true to its title as a busty lady in an American flag bikini top in closeup is shown. Perhaps telling you all you need to know about this documentary. It doesn’t have anything deep or new to say in a collection of interviews (including minor celebrity faces) but it does mildly entertained because hey … who doesn’t like breasts.

They speak to single women who get implants and their reasoning why. Plastic surgeons, models like Julie Strain, actor Tom Arnold. Everyday people on the street about what makes them so great. All the words / slang to describe them. Stereotypes. A mother & daughter duo who get them enhanced so they can both go onto jobs as erotic dancers. They show them topless working a pole in the club which is kinda nuts but you can’t turn away.

A husband & wife combo where obviously the guy is the one pushing for it. A woman on the opposite end of the spectrum getting a reduction and her reasons why. Adult entertainer Melonie Charm and her increasing monstrous bustline. There’s some light self promotion from some of the people, but that’s not a shock. Breastfeeding in public & the debate on real versus fake are some other hit points.

It’s a talking heads style of doc that I’ve seen plenty of times before. Loosely connected together in piecemeal fashion. Some works, some doesn’t. It’s really a novelty piece with the tiniest bit of titillation attached that goes with the subject matter. I’ve spent 70 minutes worse than this.

Good

This is not a great movie, but the cinematography is bare. I really like this type of film. I will never understand the hate for this movie. I found it to be sensational. It’s an amazing work and everything I had hoped for from an artistic standpoint. After reading some of the negative reviews on here, I just have to say that some people really don’t get it. Unfairly dismissed by some as confusing, I have made the decision to award this film a rating of 7/10. From an artistic standpoint, it holds its own. No matter what any of the critics write, this film is utterly fantastic, a cinematic treat you’ll cherish.

The Contestant Storyline

A Japanese reality TV star left naked in a room for more than a year, tasked with filling out magazine sweepstakes to earn food and clothing, prompts innumerable questions about our culture of oversharing. Before the onslaught of reality television in the West, there was an ominous harbinger in Japan of what was to come in our oversharing-obsessed culture. The Contestant traces the experience of aspiring comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu, nicknamed Nasubi, who unwittingly became an extreme case study. In 1998, Nasubi thought he was attending an audition when a successful Japanese TV producer, Toshio Tsuchiya, enlisted him to take part in a challenge. Tsuchiya led Nasubi into a room, ordered him to strip naked and left him with a stack of magazines. Nasubi’s task was to fill out contest coupons in order to win what he needed to survive food, clothing, appliances, etc. until he reached the prize goal of one million yen. Although Nasubi could have left at any time, he stayed for months with a fierce determination to complete his mission. He was cut off from all contact with his family and the world except for occasional interactions with Tsuchiya. What Nasubi didn’t realize was that his experiences were being broadcast to over 15 million people in a TV show called Denpa Shonen: A Life in Prizes. Without his knowledge or consent, Nasubi became the most famous television personality in Japan. While parts of Nasubi’s infamy have been recounted before on YouTube and This American Life.

The Contestant Movie Reviews

The producer/creator should have been jailed!

I just watched the contestant and the tortures that that poor man went through for other peoples entertainment is disgusting and sickening! And the man who put this all together and created should be in prison for life! At the end, when that poor man just began to strip because he figured that was his life now without even thinking just made me wanna cry. Shame on you, Japan, for allowing this to happen. And shame on the people who watched this and thought that it was OK for a man to be tortured like this, there are so many other ways that they could’ve entertained themselves than to watch a man slowly slip into madness and sadness just astound me.

What the actual hell is going on in Japan

Bro my god the stuff that happens to this dude is literally horrifying?! I cannot believe that this actually exists and was broadcast to the world and everyone really loved it.. I mean I get that they didn’t particularly know how harrowing this situation was for this guy but the fact this man spent a whole fifteen months trapped inside two incredibly small rooms only being able to live off the prizes he won from contests, nearly starving almost all the time and in a constant state of loneliness and depression yet somehow managing to always be entertaining for the camera – whether that be from him possibly going a little stir crazy or just being an immensely funny guy… I think it’s a little fifty-fifty there.

I really liked the way this was all told, which makes for one of the most visually engaging documentary experiences I have had all year. Edited together really well; between its present day interviews with those involved and related to the people involved plus the actual footage itself from the hit reality show “Life in Prizes”. Said show stars the central talking point and voice of this documentary, Tomoaki Hamatsu, or better known as Natsubi (meaning eggplant) due to his long face which was the subject of many bullies in his youth but later something he seems to have come to embrace. Natsubi himself is genuinely hilarious, every single joke this man made both on the show itself and during the talking segments were incredibly funny and he has such a strong screen presence that fills the entire atmosphere with joy it’s honestly contagious, plus the man has a very happy smile.

This documentary showcases some of the most disturbing practices in reality tv I have ever had the chance to witness and I have never before felt so bad for a man who is having psychological warfare being carried out against him. It definitely works amazingly for the show as the entire time you’re cheering the man on as you desperately want him to get out, and he does too, but it’s immensely depressing to watch this guy break as he gets put through this rigorous process not just once, but two goddamn times. I am just happy that after he had gotten out of doing this show he was able to glean something positive out of it all and the perspective it ended up giving him on the way humans cannot handle loneliness and how helping each other is so important is poetic and beautiful. Also the ending part which is far more recent when he is involved in an avalanche yet instead of trying to make sure he himself is okay after it he immediately rushes to start hello everyone else out is awe inspiring and one of the most moving things I’ve ever heard of a man doing.

Japanese television is apparently really out there which I was not really aware of before.. I mean I have seen some of the wacky game shows that have appeared in tik tok clips but I didn’t know they were doing this all the way back then and to such a severe extent that they almost entirely broke this poor man. I really hope it hasn’t affected bim so much negatively that it has ruined any portion of his life as he seems like such a happy and funny guy who more than deserves the notoriety that he has acquired, but I do wish it didn’t come at the cost of his mental state for a staggering fifteen months. Toshio Tsuchiya is a very interesting guy for being willing and insanely eager to put this man through all of this stuff, and despite him contributing a whole ton of money and resources for a helping cause, and feeling a semblance of remorse for his action – I obviously still don’t think what he did was worth it in the slightest and no matter what Natsubi learned from his experience in that situation he never should’ve been put into it.

I very clearly recommend you check out this documentary for yourself if you have Hulu, even if you’re not particularly interested in the topic itself I always think it’s a good idea to spread some light on a situation I feel like a large portion of people are not already aware of, like me. It’s really well told with some fascinating stories from everyone involved and the way it is all put together both looks great but also flows amazingly. It’s not a super long runtime either only landing at about ninety minutes so I think it’s more than worth giving your time to, and hopefully watching this supports Natsubi in some sort of way. Mans got out through hell and back and somehow came out with an even bigger smile on his face and the urge to help people, so you gotta respect him at the very least. Peak for real.

WOW

I watched this by myself and I was saying out loud “WOW”, “I don’t believe this”, and many expletives.

It’s a crazy ride. I’m not really an outwardly emotion person, but at certain points, I teared up – out of happiness, out of shock, out of just wrapping my head around.

It is much more than a voyeuristic experience of him endure, it really is a reflection of humanity; on one hand the cruelty that humans can afflict on another, and then it also showcases the compassion of humanity.

After watching, I am so surprised that here in the US I had never heard about this. It’s really unbelievable.

I am typing this right after watching and my head is still wrapping my head around what I just saw.

You Can Call Me Bill Movie Reviews

A preemptive eulogy of sorts

William Shatner – he likes to be called Bill – has had an accomplished career. One where he has reinvented himself several times over transforming from Kirk to Hooker to Crane. From author to spokesman to astronaut to …singer (and no, you do not need to imbibe on Romulan ale to enjoy his rocking “Common People” single from 2004). If anyone deserves a curtain call, Bill Shatner gets my vote. The documentary You Can Call Me Bill is a partial answer to such a victory lap. For over 90 minutes, Bill reminisces, waxes poetic, and frets on the future. Sometimes simultaneously. Often in a stream of consciousness. However, if You Can Call Me Bill is designed as a celebration, why does it come across as aimless as your grandfather commiserating about current events over Thanksgiving dinner?

Albeit a grandfather who happens to be Captain Kirk.

You Can Call Me Bill becomes a preemptive eulogy of sorts. For Shatner fans of all sizes, the movie is accessible and entertaining. Yet all of that humor, all of that love of life are only shown in the clips that the world has already enjoyed and celebrated. You Can Call Me Bill instead focuses on the solitary life of a solo man. Sitting in the dark. Waiting for the final curtain to close.

Penetrating View of William Shatner’s Life and Thoughts

I love the original series of Star Trek. It is without question my favorite TV show. I have been to Star Trek conventions and watched the episodes countless times. And yes, not all the episodes are great or even good, but many are truly amazing in both their time and ours. Many very talented people worked on the show, but I think two contributors really set the tone: Gene Roddenberry for his vision, and William Shatner for his commanding presence — he WAS the Captain of the Enterprise.

All this being said, this movie has little to do with Star Trek, and everything to do with an amazing actor who is just entering his 93rd year. Happy birthday Bill! Yes, there are clips from Star Trek and many of his other roles, and yes it’s true that this documentary is not presented in a conventional, linear fashion. But what really springs to life is the thinking and the spirituality of a man who cares deeply for his planet and all the life on it. And what could be truer to Star Trek than that?

Plenty To Satisfy

I saw You Can Call Me Bill, starring William Shatner-Boston Legal_tv, T. J. Hooker_tv.

This is a documentary about the life of William Shatner. It consists of interviews and clips of his appearances in tv shows, movies and even his recent space trip, in his 90’s-he just turned 93. If you are a fan of him and his work, you will find plenty to satisfy you. Clips are shown from Star Trek, T. J. Hooker, Boston Legal, his Twilight Zone episodes, old westerns…..well, just about everything he has been in. It covers his philosophies on life, such as his love of animals-dogs and horses are his favorite-and basically, the whole planet and the eco system. He talks about how he wants to be buried and it’s probably not how you think. The only problem I had was that things are not told in order. He will talk about a show or movie and then jump back to when he was a kid. It’s like that through out the movie.

It’s rated PG-13 for language and drug use and has a running time of 1 hour & 36 minutes.

Like I said, it’s for his fans so if you are one, then it would be a good one to stream.

He Named Me Malala Movie Reviews

Going all the way

While a documentary can have the distance approach, it would have been difficult to sell this one. This is all about feeling, all about emotion and all about emancipation. It is also about freedom and unity. About misunderstandings and clarifications. There is so much going on, that it’s amazing it’s not a longer movie/running time.

It works on almost all these levels, people are familiar with the person (be it because of her TV appearances or her nominations). But it’s still something different to see her personally or learn about her family and her father. You have to be a strong person to survive the things she has to face, but she still remains “human” (if that is a thing to say). A strong message is delivered and a powerful movie made …

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a highly inspirational documentary and a delight to watch.

Having saved the world so many times, how many superheroes have you seen on the cover of Time magazine? That’s right, they don’t exist. But real heroes do and they don’t need superpowers or a fancy costume to stand in the face of injustice. As a defender of truth and equality in the times we live in, this is the incredible true story of Malala Yousafzai, a real hero whose only weapon is indelible courage.

From Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim and produced by Imagenation Abu Dhabi, He Named Me Malala is part documentary, part animation, and part live action, but wholly narrated by Malala and her father Ziauddin Yousafzai. Although the use of animation is questionable, these segments are used as plot points leading up to the day when Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban. If not, Guggenheim would have had to reenact those moments using real actors but at the risk of discounting the authenticity of this documentary. Along with actual news footage and still images, much of the story is a reiteration of her courage, her ordeal, her survival, and her dedication as a right-to-education activist. While this might seem all too familiar to anyone following the news, the documentary doesn’t feel scripted or even overladen with praise. And why shouldn’t it be? This is about the assassination attempt on a 15-year-old girl whose only crime was speaking out on her basic right to an education.

Inspired by her memoir I Am Malala, the film begins in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 2013, where the Yousafzai family is based post recovery period. Although you don’t see a scar, Malala bears a lopsided smile whenever she is asked a question. There is sadness in her eyes along with bashful insecurity but also wisdom and an inner strength much beyond her age. “Three years have passed”, she recalls, not of the attempt on her life, but having left her beautiful home in the Swat Valley province of Pakistan. Surrounded by Afghani Mountains, we are shown images of this scenic region (which is always presented as a place of bloodshed and massacre by the media) before Malala begins her story. This is also where the narrative shifts from Malala to her father, beginning with his version of a ‘love marriage’ to Malala’s mother. As a self-taught public speaker, Ziauddin’s story is as incredible as his daughter Malala’s. While it’s clear where the latter gets her courage and insight from, it’s the development of a symbiotic father-daughter relationship that makes this a documentary that must be seen.

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a delight to watch, and so is Malala Yousafzai. Guggenheim could have stuffed this film with geopolitical propaganda and ended it with a bleeding cry for justice. When asked if they caught the person who shot his daughter, Ziauddin replies “Not a person, but an ideology”. Likewise, Malala has her own quips, and along with her brothers and her father add refreshingly funny moments given the subject matter. At the same time and given her status as a public figure, at no point does Malala seem like a celebrity, nor does she see herself that way. What you do see is a shy teenager but one that is utterly brave and honest with the kind of raw dedication that outflanks millions, possibly billions, of people her age. The fact that Malala was featured on Time magazine twice, followed by her becoming the youngest ever recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 proves my last statement.

He Named Me Malala is highly inspirational and the type of film where you clap in the end, only to realize that you’ve clapped too early. Malala is only 18 now, but she has achieved far more than any of us ever will. That itself is worth a standing ovation and I wish her a long life of success in her fight for equality and education with many more accolades to come.

What did you do as a teenager?

Greetings again from the darkness. One would be hard-pressed to name anyone currently on the planet who is more deserving of having her story told than Malala Yousafzai. In case you don’t recognize the name, Malala is the teenage girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out in favor of education for Pakistani girls.

Unlike her namesake in the legendary story told to open the film, this Malala somehow survived the gunshot and has continued her mission of spreading the importance of education throughout the globe. Her efforts resulted in her being named the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2014. This girl is extraordinary and inspiring.

Davis Guggenheim has proved his expertise in the documentary world with excellent work in Waiting for Superman (2010) and his Oscar winner An Inconvenient Truth (2006). Though Malala may be his most fascinating subject to date, this is probably not his best filmmaking. The extensive use of animation distracts from Malala’s story, and also Guggenheim’s attempts to show the teenage girl that exists alongside the global activist are often disjointed. We enjoy seeing her warm and sincere interactions with her brothers and her embarrassment at low grades on school work, but each time one of these sequences begins, the film abruptly shifts to another incident – possibly as a reminder to us that her life is anything but normal.

Some of the film’s highlights include Malala’s speech to the United Nations assembly, the crime scene photographs of the bus on which she and her friends were shot, and those moments when she lets her emotions roam free … she mutters “It’s so hard to get things done in this world”. We feel her pain and find ourselves wanting to stand with Malala.

Much of what we see is from her promotional tour to support her book “I am Malala”, and it’s her words and commitment to the cause that leave such an impression. Guggenheim hints that her father may have pushed her into this life, but this wise-beyond-her-years young woman has more than earned our respect and admiration. She convinces us that the best way to “arm” young people around the world is with books and a pen … the most powerful weapons. Her courage and commitment cause us to question our actions as 17 year olds. What a truly extraordinary person she is.

Knock Down the House Storyline

Four exceptional women mount grassroots campaigns against powerful incumbents in Knock Down the House, an inspiring look at the 2018 midterm elections that tipped the balance of power. When tragedy struck her family in the middle of the financial crisis, Bronx-born Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had to work double shifts as a bartender to save her home from foreclosure. After losing a loved one to a preventable medical condition, Amy Vilela didn’t know what to do with the anger she felt about America’s broken health care system. Cori Bush, a registered nurse and pastor, was drawn to the streets when the police shooting of an unarmed black man brought protests and tanks into her neighborhood. A coal miner’s daughter, Paula Jean Swearengin was fed up with watching her friends and family suffer from the environmental effects of the coal industry.—Netflix

Knock Down the House Movie Reviews

Beyond the politics, brilliant documentary

I’ve never been a big fan of AOC, but this is an amazing window in the process faced by citizens trying to disrupt the establishment bias of congressional and senate elections. Brilliant documentary style and very down to earth compared to similar attempts. Doesn’t focus heavily on the politics involved, significantly more on the process.

No matter who you vote for, this is a great watch.

don’t listen to the bad reviews

First off I have to state over 40% of the ratings were given 1 star. This tells me tons of small minded conservatives, who most likely didn’t even watch the film, are desperately trying to paint the film as propaganda. This documentary is far from it. As AOC states “Everyday Americans should be represented by everyday Americans” This documentary is about how much harder it is for women, especially women of color, to succeed in a straight white mans world in the government. it is about women who want to fight for what is right, not how big business can line their pockets. no matter what your political view is i think you will find this doc very eye opening. a definite must watch

See AOC running for Congress

This excellent documentary showcases four women running for office in the 2018 election. We are now all familiar with AOC but at the time of shooting the film she was just a bartender from the Bronx. Fascinating to see her developing a political style and joining a movement to change the system. All the women in the film are amazing and make great representatives. We need them and others to make a difference!

Eläinoikeusjuttu Storyline

More than ten years ago Saila confessed openly that she was part of the activist group that secretly filmed hundreds of animal farms. Saila’s sister Mai has chosen a different path, politics, and Saila fears her biggest activist idol might become a part of the machinery they have been fighting against together. Saila spent three years of her youth in a legal battle where the prosecutor sought her a jail sentence and the farmers wanted extreme compensation. The leading activist, Kristo, saw Saila as the next hope for the movement. However, Saila does not know how to prove and convince people of the suffering of animals anymore. She needs to save herself and find out what kind of an activist and a person she is.

Food, Inc. 2 Storyline

The groundbreaking Oscar®-nominated documentary Food, Inc. ignited a cultural conversation about the multinational corporations that control our food system at enormous cost to our planet, workforce and health. In the well-timed sequel, Food, Inc. 2, comes “back for seconds” to reveal how corporate consolidation has gone unchecked by our government, leaving us with a highly efficient yet shockingly vulnerable food system dedicated only towards increasing profits.

Panic: The Untold Story of the 2008 Financial Crisis Movie Reviews

Good, well made documentary, but doesn’t question enough the actions

Really professional documentary with all the key players involved, certainly giving me an insight into the motivations and hard work behind keeping the US and probably the world economy afloat. However…what was disappointing was the lack of challenge to the actions that took place, the lack of a counter view. All we got was the acknowledgement that they realised their actions were unpopular, but they maintained they were necessary.

The government, financial watchdogs and banks caused the recession due to a combination of actions. Successive governments starting with Reagan and leading to the present day have removed the “checks and balances” that were in place to prevent another depression. Where are the consequences for these people?

  • How can any system & country be in a situation where a private company can destroy the economy and create misery for millions?
  • Why weren’t measures and controls in place to ensure this didn’t happen?
  • Why weren’t all the management removed for all the companies involved?
  • What measures are now in place?
  • What retrospective actions has or is happening to hold the banking system accountable for the misery they created?

Unfortunately, in the end we only got the perspective of the people that caused this crisis and how they went about trying to fix it.

There were other options; how about nationalising the banks to ensure credit was lent to businesses (I know the US is irrationally against any form of socialism, but this was a viable option). A recession is not caused by the banks going bankrupt, it was caused by the lack of “credit” being available to businesses and people, so resolve that issue, rather than just keeping the guilty people in a job and maintaining a morally corrupt system.

Anyway, it was a well-made documentary, just too one sided and no real challenging questions were put to the people who caused the problem.

Great re-telling of the ’08 financial meltdown, could do without the anti-Trump nonsense at the end of the film.

I thought this documentary was a great re-telling and explanation of all the moving parts of the ’08 financial crisis. Having the key players interviewed and explain their thought processes was a good way to tell the story.

The obligatory Holly-weird anti-Trump nonsense at the end of the film was wholly unnecessary and seemed beyond oddly out of place. But, what else can we expect from Holly-weird these days than to blame anything on Trump.

Aside from the absurd connection of Trump to the ’08 financial crisis, the film was very good.

Riveting documentary with all the main players looking back, now a decade later

“Panic: The Untold Story of the 20098 financial Crisis” (2018 release; 96 min.) is a documentary on the roots of the 2008 financial crisis, how the crisis itself unfolded, and most importantly, the unintended long-term consequences of it all. As the documentary opens, we are “September 11, 2018”, as all of the main players from a decade earlier get together for a remembrance dinner. We then go back to “May 9, 2006”, not long after Henk Paulson has joined the Bush administration as the Treasury Secretary, and the market is showing signs of a housing bubble. It sets into motion a financial crisis of unimaginable proportions. At this point we are 10 min. into the film.

Couple of comments: the film makers concentrate on the three main guys: then Treasury Secretary Henk Paulson, Federal Reserve Bank of New York President Timothy Geithner, and Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke. These three band together as a triumvirate and rarely decide anything without consulting each other. Interestingly, all three make clear that they are motivated to do whatever it takes to avoid another Great Depression. Of course many others are featured as well. Several things are striking: (i) when facing calamity, the political leaders in Washington came together and acted in a bipartisan way that is simply and utterly unthinkable in today’s climate; (ii) “we should’ve done a better job explaining to the public what we were doing”, sighs Paulson, and he is right of course; mostly lost in the narrative of the financial industry’s bailout is the inconvenient truth that all of the $700 billion TARP bailout money was repaid WITH INTEREST to the US government; (iii) perhaps most surprisingly, former President George W. Bush comes across as a calming yet resolute leader who lets the experts do their job (meaning, the complete opposite of the current POTUS).

The last 15 min. of the documentary are the most revealing, as it just “the straight line between the the financial crisis and the populism in today’s politics, linked by the rise of the Tea Party starting in 2009. It is absolutely devastating to see how in just a single decade we are now living in a world of untruths, disinformation, lies, conspiracy theorists, the real v. imagined “deep state”, and the shocking incompetence and complete lack of leadership coming from the current POTUS and his administration. Meanwhile, “Panic: The Untold Truth of the 2008 Financial Crisis” is a riveting documentary that contains a lot of valuable lessons to understand how we got where we are today.
