A passable movie with great moments.

It seems a shame to describe any Women In Prison picture as “tedious”, but this Italian production just fails to be that interesting for its first half. It takes a while to get to any rioting that’s going to be done. Fortunately, along the way there are choice scenes that lovers of cinematic trash will adore. They just have to wade through a lot of talk to get to them. This wouldn’t be so bad if the movie weren’t so horribly dubbed, though: the dialogue is pretty hard to make out at times (not that aficionados of this sort of thing would really care about dialogue).

Performances are mostly adequate in this tale of French tourist Martine Fresienne (Martine Brochard), vacationing in Italy, who just happens to be present when cops bust a bunch of hippies. As it happens, some drugs are planted on Martine, so she’s busted with the rest of them and sent to prison – a typical enough prison for W.I.P. fare. Martine makes the acquaintance of Susan (Marilu Tolo), a loud, aggressive inmate who’s the kind of person who makes things happen.

If you’ve read this far, you’ll be pleased to know that the movie delivers what you could expect, including an extended shower scene. There’s plenty of bare female flesh to admire, always extremely important for the genre. The highlights of the movie include an inmate pleasuring herself in the shower, Susan doing the same in the yard in order to tease a guard, the supreme embarrassment of a hot young nun (Cristina Galbo), the strip tease performed by Isabelle (Isabelle De Valvert), and a rather poetically done lesbian sex scene. With things like this going on, it’s understandable that the viewers aren’t going to care a whole lot about the story. The standout among the actresses is striking brunette Tolo, who comes complete with a particularly bad dubbing job.

Running a mere 81 minutes, this obviously pretty obscure movie has been resurrected on DVD by the grindhouse collection started by Charles Bands’ Full Moon company. Completists will definitely want to give it a look.

Mean Girls.

After selling the 36 Steps (2006-also reviewed) DVD, I wanted to find a bonus title I could send to the buyer as a free gift. Digging into my pile of unwatched Italian flicks,I eyed a obscure WIP title,which left me in the mood for a riot.

Stripping the prisoners down in their sentencing, co-writer/(with Leila Buongiorno/Anthony La Penna and Aldo Semeraro) director Brunello Rondi (who wrote Fellini’s most famous works!) & cinematographer Gino Santini lay bare a nice and sleazy WIP atmosphere from the ladies ripping their clothes off in cat fights,and wonderfully bonkers dips into unintended (?) comedy (a noose for a dog!)

Kicking it all off in the prison, Rondi charges in with a Grindhouse rough and ready style in hand-held camera moves punching into the middle of the action, and rapid spinning camera moves rolling on the disorientating state of a riot.

Each coming from the school of hard knocks, the writers give each of the gals tasty coarsely cut dialogue, bringing out a ruthless bite to when the action starts. Entering the big house being found wrongly guilty, fit Martine Brochard gives a live wire turn as Fresienne, whose innocent state Brochard grinds down,by getting Fresienne caught up in a riot in a women’s prison.

Unexciting plot, two obligatory scenes

The premise of this movie is that a woman is falsely accused of dealing in drugs. She encounters a group of people doing drugs and when the police arrive, a stash is placed in her coat. Those drugs are discovered, and she is summarily sent to prison to await trial. It is a prison run by nuns and most of the movie depicts the lives of the women in their environment.

Much of the movie is predictable, with two of the obligatory scenes of such movies present. The first is the shower scene, where the women cavort like schoolgirls under the streams of water. They are having so much fun that the nun supervising them steps in to separate an overexuberant pair. The second obligatory scene is one that strongly hints of lesbian sexual activity.

As was expected, there were several scenes where the sole purpose seemed to be an excuse to include one or more bare female breasts. Other than that, the movie is quite dull, the acting is weak, storyline unremarkable and predictable. The falsely accused woman is somehow exonerated and apparently walks out of the prison a changed person. At least that is what is hinted, there is no definitive justification. It is a typical example of the women in prison genre that was popular drive-in fare for a time.

A masterpiece

I loved this movie, like all of his previous ones, there is a common dark atmosphere and a raw look into Russian society and mankind in general.

The actors are excelent, the script is brutal and honest, the writing is very good and it will make you think in the end.

It’s a movie about man, greed, despair, numbness, lost souls, what’s not to love.

A Russian version of « Aux armes, citoyens! »

The atmosphere is profoundly dark with a medieval exploitation of Russian workers in an outmoded factory in the suburbs of a small industrial town. Unless you are born with a silver spoon in your mouth and/or suffer from aggravated autism, you should be immediately in empathy with this bunch of no-hopers who rebel mainly because of a lack of choice against the oligarch who informs them, coldly and without any qualm, the impending closure of the factory. The continuation is a modern and military adaptation of Germinal (Émile Zola, 1885).

Moreover, as the society is profoundly changing, this story is probably a harbinger of manifold similarities in the real life, as the ravages of the French « gilets jaunes » which have been world-widely broadcasted.

Brutal. Cold.

Atmospheric, bleak. I really liked the beginning scene, as a russian citizen I quite felt that. Bykov does a great job at portraying good shots, I believe them. Brings the memories of watching “The prisoners” by Denis Villeneuve. Characters are good, almost everyone has a unique story and something in common – nothing to lose. Well, not exactly. Freezing metal, never ending night rain, sad reality which pursues the workers of the factory. Welcome to zavod, tovarishi.

Some scenes feel incomplete, obscure and break the dynamic. Several action moments are unpredictable and better than today’s Hollywood junk. The story itself is good, but not great, at least for me. For non russian viewers it will seem odd, probably. I didn’t get what Bykov had to say specifically. Maybe something about people’s egoistcal nature, two completely different figures fighting against each other ideologies, but are they really that different? Perhaps not.

A recently rediscovered gem

Junya Sato’s Golgo 13 is a much more human and melancholy adaptation of the source material, it loses the seemingly superhuman aspects of his anime counterpart. Making gorgeous use of a pre-revolution Iran, a decidedly off-the-wall idea even for the time and one that gives it a unique flavour, sees a perfectly cast Ken Takakura in the title role radiate with an ice-cold countenance matched only by his deadly skills and irresistibility to women. Oozing with menace and masculine suave, Golgo 13 trudges across desert landscapes, a man on a mission, decidedly anti-heroic but brilliantly realised encountering kaleidoscopic villains along the way. Excellently shot and choreographed action, striking editing and a classic slice of Toei-style orchestration for its soundtrack give Junya Sato’s Golgo 13 a decidedly Spaghetti Western tinge. I can’t thank Eureka Entertainment enough for finally giving this movie the attention it so justly deserves.

Looks like an amateur movie.

Ridiculous cheap japanese action movie. The action occurs in Iran, a surrealist Iran since everybody seems to speak japanese fluently, where is the logic ? The main character is not charismatic and hardly talks during the whole movie. Each detail seems ridiculous: the killed people close their eyes when they die, the burned cars are empty while there were full of gangsters during the car chase, etc.

Unfairly obscure Japanese/Iranian action gem

This is an early live-action adaption of a manga comic of the same name. I think the best way to think of it is as a Japanese version of James Bond. Except in this case the lead character is a hired professional killer (in fairness Bond was really more this than an actual spy) and, as could probably be expected given its Japanese origins, it’s decidedly more violent. In actual fact, despite a few moments of memorable humour, this is hardly campy fare and is more an example of straight-ahead gritty 70’s action. The lead character Golgo 13 is played brilliantly by Ken Takakura, who looks like a genuine bad ass throughout the picture. This is clearly a character that deserves to be better known. As does the film itself. It remains extremely obscure. Having seen it I find this a strange scenario as this is not a ropey z-grade film or avant-garde oddity but a pretty well made b-movie with lots of action and memorable scenes. Aside from its strengths as a solid action flick, one of its main interest factors nowadays is that fact that it is set in pre-Revolution Iran. Set in and around Tehran the action roves around the streets of the city, the ancient ruins and holy temples. There is even a nightclub with an erotic dancer. It’s a time-capsule scenario where we see a far more liberal culture very different to the one we know today. It makes a really great backdrop for the events in the film – simply something we are not accustomed to seeing any more.

The story has Golgo 13 hired to take out a villain called Goa who has been killing secret agents as well as conducting a terror campaign in which many women have been abducted from the streets. Nothing much is known about Goa but it eventually becomes clear that he has a pet parrot, which results in a genuinely hilarious ending – you really have to see it to believe it. This is a film that it almost goes without saying deserves to be seen by a far wider audience. It remains so far off the radar that it barely even qualifies as a cult item! I say seek it out, it holds up very well compared to the best of the western urban action movies of its day. It’s tough, cool, strange and unique – it is well worth your time checking this one out.

Director Raymond St-Jean chose to keep simple by avoiding any glamorization of a man initially endowed with charisma, whose fall was as abrupt as his rise was rapid within the underworld of southwest Montreal… The filmmaker of course focuses on describing the murders in which Lavoie was involved – which he shows very dryly, without any commercial elements…

Éric Bruneau imposes himself in the role of Donald Lavoie by revealing both the implacable nature of a killer capable of coldly carrying out orders… The story also takes a new direction when Inspector Roger Burns (Sylvain Marcel, impeccable) arrives in the scene, who will make Lavoie an informant…

Director however inspite of gangster movie keeps the hope of family value intact…Though the plot urges that power,respect & money comes afterwards…”A family is a family” at the end of the day making “A man life is so easy to take away” while it’s evident that nobody has a normal life…

Overall this is one cinematic experience you don’t want to miss…

A lot of fiction but make for a decent crime drama

After watching the movie i did my researches and it seem not a lot is actually true to the real life events beside the main character and the main antagonist. But they mention it at the start of the movie that a lot is fiction for various reasons like protecting real peoples identities and making a more entertaining movie.

That out of the way, i will review the movie as such, a movie, and not on how accurate it is.

Its been a long while since i last watched a Quebec movie. To be honest i rarely do, because even as a Quebecer myself, i am not really attracted a lot by our movies.

Quebec ain’t the most populated place and our movies made in french mostly are aimed at us only and maybe to an extent France, but as we ain’t big on their accents, they are likely not big on ours. So our movies never get a big budget and therefore they are either comedies or dramas for the most part. I enjoy comedy but a lot less drama in general. I love movies but i am what you would call a commercial consumer. I prefer en entertaining action movie like a superhero movie or a John Wick over a Scorsese movie for instance.

That said a story on the criminal underworld is something that interest me more than your usual Quebec drama, and as such it was a fine one, altough its really a character driven movie.

Don’t expect gun fights, action scenes or stuff like that. If guns are ocasionally used, its never in the vein of an action scene. Everything is base on the characters and the story the movie want to tell and on that front i think it was fine.

Its not a movie i would watch a second time or that i can say was extremely entertaining, but its an interesting story and the acting was fine. I knew what i was gonna watch and it turned out to be just that. At 1h45 minutes it had a decent pacing as well.

For a Quebec movie its a good one but if you are Americans or such watching with subtiles, you will have to understand its like a super indy movie for you.

Lou (Kristen Stewart) works at a hard-core gym, unclogging toilets and being pressured by Daisy (Anna Baryshnikov) for a date.Jackie (Katy O’Brian) arrives in town and has sex with JJ (Dave Franco) in order to secure a job at a gun range. She has nowhere to stay, so she sleeps and works out underneath a nearby bridge.Lou visits her sister, Beth (Jena Malone), whose house is filled with children and suffers clear signs of domestic abuse from her husband, JJ. He leaves for work where he shows Jackie around and introduces her to the owner (Ed Harris).Jackie comes to work out at the gym, and Lou is immediately smitten by her. Her fantasies are interrupted by two FBI agents asking about her father, who she says she hasn’t talked to in years. Lou and Jackie chat outside, but are interrupted by two patrons asking Jackie out on a date. She refuses, then punches one in the face after he attempts to grab her. He hits her back and Lou rushes her inside. They talk about Jackie’s dream to go to Vegas to compete in the finals for a bodybuilding competition, so Lou offers her a stash of steroids from her office. While Jackie is initially reluctant, she agrees and Lou injects her with a vial. The two are clearly attracted to each other and begin making out, then leave for Lou’s apartment to have sex.The following morning, Lou laments that Jackie’s working at the gun range, as her estranged dad, Lou Sr., owns it. Lou agrees to let Jackie stay with her, leading to a period of love, sex, and steroid injections. Back at the gun range, Lou Sr. runs a criminal operation smuggling guns to Mexico and teaches Jackie how to shoot a gun.Lou and Jackie go on an awkward double date with JJ and Beth, who has another set of bruises and cuts. Lou follows JJ to the bathroom to threaten him, but he reveals that he slept with Jackie and suggests that she’s probably just using Lou for the gym and housing. They fight on the way home, but speed away together after Lou spots the FBI agents.The following day, Lou gets a call that Beth is in the hospital with severe face and head injuries. Lou is furious, but the police will not arrest JJ unless Beth agrees to press charges, which she always refuses to do. Upon seeing Lou sobbing, Jackie’s muscles begin to swell and she flies into a rage and drives to Beth’s house to violently murder JJ. Lou spots her truck in front of Beth’s house and enters to find JJ’s body and a catatonic Jackie. After being initially horrified, Lou sets to work cleaning up the mess and puts JJ in the back of his own car. On the way to dispose of the body, Daisy spots Lou and knocks on the window of JJ’s car to chat. The girls push the car into a large gorge, then set it on fire, sending smoke billowing into the sky. Lou assures Jackie that there are other things in the gorge that will point the police to someone else, so all they need to do is stay put in the apt. While Lou cleans up Beth’s house, Jackie takes many vials of steroids and breaks out of the house to go work out, which infuriates Lou. Still hyped up on steroids, Jackie headbutts Lou and hitchhikes to Vegas for the bodybuilding competition. While her individual performance originally goes well, she has a panic attack and vomits on the stage. When she sees other competitors laughing at her, she viciously attacks them and is arrested.Lou Sr. confronts Lou at the hospital about leading police to the gorge, as it has attracted attention to the bodies that he has dumped down there. When Lou arrives home, she runs into Daisy who begins asking questions about why she was driving JJ’s car that night. In order to silence her, Lou has sex with Daisy, who then answers the phone when Jackie calls from jail and tells her not to bother them. Instead, Lou Sr. bails Jackie out of prison and claims he can help her get out of this mess. Lou has continued seeing Daisy to find out what she knows, but when they return to Lou’s house, Jackie shoots Daisy in the face, then runs. Lou hides the body behind the couch when FBI agents arrive to continue asking questions about JJ, who was one of their biggest informants on Lou Sr. They reveal they know that Lou used to be Lou Sr.’s right-hand man, so she’d have enough information to put him away. Once they leave, Lou Sr. calls to tell Lou that he has Jackie and plans to pin the double homicide on her. Lou threatens to reveal everything to the FBI if he does that, so he sends over a corrupt policeman to kill her. She knocks him out, then goes to rescue Jackie, but runs into Beth who attacks her for killing JJ. Jackie is tied up in the garage, and after initially running from Lou, they embrace and make up. Lou sends Jackie off towards the car, while she goes to confront her dad, but he arrives and shoots Lou in the leg and prepares to kill her. Jackie, empowered by her love for Lou, appears as a 60ft. woman and pins Lou Sr. to the ground. Lou puts a gun in his mouth, but decides to leave him for the incoming police. The two girls drive into the desert, but Lou hears thumping from the bed of the truck and discovers that Daisy is still alive. As Jackie sleeps, Lou strangles Daisy and drags her body into the desert.

A love that bleeds

Rose Glass, the visionary director behind Saint Maud, throws another punch with Love Lies Bleeding, a neo-noir crime thriller that’s both stylish and unsettling. Admittedly, the pacing can be uneven at times. However, the film regains its momentum in the final act, culminating in a climax that’s both shocking and strangely cathartic.

Technically, Love Lies Bleeding is a knockout. The cinematography is sharp, using bold colours and contrasting lighting to create a visually arresting world. The pounding score complements the film’s intensity, while the editing keeps the narrative taut without sacrificing character development.

Mesmerizing to watch.

My first thought was it feels like the gym was depicted in the way someone who doesn’t go to the gym imagines the gym is like. Like they watched Pumping Iron instead of visiting the nearest gym. It’s like if Pumping Iron was a raunchy, lesbian, blood-soaked psychedelic experience. With a dash of crime family drama.

I found the cinematography of the movies to be quite impressive; it had a captivating aesthetic. Although it’s not on an epic scale and mostly unfolds in remote settings, it’s mesmerizingly filmed with themes of sex and violence. The characters are pretty good, so were the actors playing them. Kristen Stewart was Kristen Stewart, I think you already know what to expect when you see her in a movie, and I think she was pretty good. It took me a while to realize I recognized Katy O’Brian from The Mandalorian. I loved that she was homeless but still working out; if she can get swole living under a bridge, what’s your excuse? Lol.

Theres a huge emphasis on smoking and drugs, it’s a pretty big theme and mostly referenced on the radio. The story is alright, there’s a love, crime and family drama.

It’s quite raunchy. I wasn’t expecting that, but I suppose the movie did give off those vibes. I just didn’t watch any trailers or anything and went in blind. It also included some other adult/mature content like domestic violence. It’s quite gory as well. Initially, it felt like it was penned by a man; I was surprised to learn it was written/directed by a woman afterward. I recall thinking that there will probably be a lot of people commenting on this, expressing their displeasure with how women are portrayed in movies written by men.

The movie had several moments where I thought to myself, well that’s taken a weird turn. It gets more weird and weirder the longer in goes. It’s really weird that it was common/normal back then to just hit your wife. It was jarring to watch. Franco’s character is probably the worst one.

It’s also one of those movies where none of the characters are good people, it’s just bad people making bad decisions, in the name of love. I didn’t really find myself rooting for anyone and l didn’t feel particularly attached to the movie as a whole. I feel like it could’ve been better, and by better I mean more psychedelic, more violent, maybe even disturbing. It’s not a movie for everyone, but it’s pretty interesting and I enjoyed it. I like it but I don’t know if it’ll still be on my mind a month from now.

Worth the time

This isn’t some jam down your throat gay movie. It’s a movie with characters that happen to be gay. As someone who typically gets annoyed by movies that attempt this over the last decade now, I would say it wasn’t overwhelming or assertive at all. Straight forward plot, but never getting too predictable. It does a wonderful job of showing fresh exciting love being deconstructed by the realities of life very well.

It was also the perfect length. It never feels like it’s dragging on or being rushed.

Acting was above average for today’s standards. Nobodies acting got in the way of the plot. Overall decent way to spend an early afternoon.

Expect of heavy sex scenes in the first third or so btw.

Bravo!

Wow this movie was good! I really liked it a lot. It’s was a really good movie, it was fun, the story was really good, the actors did a great job. It was both funny and it also showed the dark side of web like spy cams(and that they come in all shape and sizes), that many victims can’t handle it and they commit suicide, drug perfumes and how they lure their victims.

The chemistry between Mi-ran and Sung-Kyung was really good and Ha-joon was as always gorgeous.

Entertaining and enjoyable action comedy…

I think that the 2019 movie “Geol kapseu” (aka “Mrs. and Miss Cops”) was quite entertaining, and it was very much a movie that embodied everything that the South Korean cinema does best.

Writer and director Jung Da-Won ensured that the movie held enough parts of comedy, action and thrills to make it an interesting movie from start to end. So there is essentially a little bit of something for just everyone to be had here in the movie. I particularly liked how the comedy aspects of the movie were kept subtle, as such the movie didn’t crash over and became a full-out comedy.

And the lead actresses Mi-ran Ra (playing Mi-Young) and Song-Kyoung Lee (playing Ji-Hye) were so well-cast for these roles and they performed wonderfully throughout the movie. They definitely had a great on-screen chemistry. And I must say that the movie had such a wonderful character gallery, that you just can’t help but come to love and adore.

Now, I mentioned that “Mrs. and Miss Cops” embodies everything that is good about the South Korean cinema, but I can’t really put that into a more descriptive manner, because there is just something unique about the South Korean cinema, and they make these light-hearted action comedies phenomenally, and “Mrs. and Miss Cops” were no exception.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and was entertained from the very beginning and up to the end.

If you enjoy the South Korean cinema, then you definitely have to take the time to sit down and watch “Mrs. and Miss Cops” if you have the chance.

My rating for the movie is a solid six out of ten stars.

Not Good Enough

I guess after midnight runners, I was expecting too much out of girl cops.

The movie had a strong cast, with two strong female leads that had nice chemistry. They delivered both on the emotional level and on the action level, which was probably the best part of the movie.

However, the plot, although it seemed strong at first, it was not presented well enough. That felt like they were degrading the whole mystery and crime case to a more simple one when it wasn’t.

So, overall, four out of ten.

Can do better!

City Hunter is almost 30 years old. For a new audience, the production could have made a one on one adaptation of the manga and/or anime to get new fans. It wouldn’t have hurt and the 90s kids (or earlier) would love it. City Hunter is not that hard to adapt IMO. This movie just becomes another action movie.

Besides Kaori, which they changed a little the background, the main characters are from the source. The story is from the principal arc which is good but the introduction is too long to narrate. For a movie of 1h40 minutes, it should have focused on the characters with some small side missions for the 30 first minutes to know them better. It’s a miss from the prod. In the end, we don’t know what’s xyz and don’t even know what is City Hunter which is sad truly. City Hunter should be the light for the city of Tokyo. It should brings hope to the needy. But besides that we just get another action movie which is confusing and boring at time.

City Hunter (2024) has missed the mark to get introduced to new fans. It looks just like a fan service of something that is adaptable to a broader audience, but that tells nothing.

The ending sounds like it’s open for new parts. If there are not other parts, then this movie is just a pass. It sometimes is too confusing unless the viewers know already the series.

The Difinitive Live-Action City Hunter

You can tell Ryohei Suzuki is a diehard fan. This was absolutely amazing. Every part of the film feels like it had been made with care and love for the source material.

All main cast were excellent, with Suzuki being the obvious standout. He is Ryo Saeba, and he put in the work. His execution of the hand-to-hand combat and gunplay is phenomenal. He truly makes Ryo feel like the most formidable man you have ever seen.

The comedy, too, has been updated to modern times. Ryo is still as lecherous as ever, but he never puts his hands on anyone without their consent, which is a welcome change.

This film sets a new standard for adapting manga and anime right. I am very hopeful for a sequel.

A distinct King film

If you’re at all familiar with the work of Stephen King then you wouldn’t even need to be told this was an adaption of one of one of his short stories to know it. It has his signatures written all over it from the talking GPS, the elderly character from one of our heroines book who is an extension of herself, the dark humour – it’s all there. I’m told this sticks very faithfully to the book and I’ve always felt adaptations of King’s work are at their best when they do this.

It’s very similar to Jodie Foster’s 2007 film ‘The Brave One’. A woman taking revenge for a heinous crime committed against her. These days the revenge genre, when the lead character is a man, has become a little stale so filmmakers are having to think up creative ways to keep it interesting with unique killing styles and traveling half way across the globe to find their prey. It seems the female lead character is still fresh enough though that the revenge can be enacted in a pretty straight up and down way.

For a TV movie the quality is certainly all there. The acting is very decent and the story never drags nor feels rushed. Maria Bello impressed me in the lead role. She was gritty and believable and never makes you turn against her which is very important in this type of film. It never really does anything original enough to be considered great which is the only thing holding it back. But overall a good watch.

Maria Bello is a Superstar

The lead actress in this movie gives a staggeringly superb performance.

She is a famous fiction writer who becomes the victim of a horrendous crime and decides to seek revenge.

The problem with this film is that it is presented in the screwball style(the story comes from Stephen King) which turns it into what the English call a ‘black comedy’ with imaginary characters and objects speaking out loud and the dead talking after their demise. Despite these challenges, the lead player still manages to make this a compelling view:

This is written after my second viewing, not having remembered the first viewing when I first got a copy of it, judge that how you like.

Unabashed fan of anything Stephen King and almost anything that Maria Bello is in, this is a good watch. It starts off at a pedestrian enough pace, has a shocking bit that he viewer has to digest then powers on and builds to the climax like almost all Stephen Kings writing does with twists along the way.

Some of the story is a little predictable, but the acting by all concerned is well above average which made the movie quite believable. No silly mistakes and drawn out sequences where the villain gains a temporary upper hand like most revenge movies was a nice change.

Overall an enjoyable movie, but not for the faint hearted.

Amnesia, murder and a sweet married couple

Ralph Richardson arrives home from work at seven as he does every day, where he finds his wife Margaret Leighton sobbing. When she shows him the newspaper, it hits him: it’s not Monday evening but Tuesday evening! He’s been missing for an entire day, and he has no recollection of where he’s been. While trying to figure out what happened with family doctor Jack Hawkins, they get news that the safe of Richardson’s social club has been robbed, and a steward at the club murdered. Inspector Campbell Singer is investigating and all clues seem to lead to Richardson…

Based on a play by R.C. Sheriff (and inspired by personal experiences) that also starred Richardson (‘The Fallen Idol’), this is the sole movie that he directed. Which is quite a remarkable feat as he’s in almost every scene. He does a very nice job tho, both in front of and behind the camera. He gives a great restrained performance and Leighton (‘The Good Die Young’) is perfectly cast as his wife. Together they make one of the sweetest couples I’ve seen lately, with some very touching scenes (esp the one where he tries to prepare her for life without him, while having tea and toast). The resolution of Richardson’s predicament is quite satisfying and also adds depth to the movie and Richardson’s psyche. It also shows how an innocent little white lie between husband and wife (and this one really is innocent), can have grave consequences…

Richardson’s directing and the camera work by Jack Hilyard (‘The Bridge On The River Kwai’) and Edward Scaife (‘Night of The Demon’) is straight-forward and devoid of flourishes but efficient and solid. It’s not the most exciting movie ever made as it is primarily dialogue-driven, but it’s a good uber-British stiff upper lip take on an amnesia noir thriller, with excellent and touching performances by Richardson and Leighton. Recommended. 7/10

British Gold Nugget from the 1950’s

Ralph Richardson, who both directs and acts in this film, has taken a simple story that depicts a short period in the life of a middle-class couple in post-war England whose routine is suddenly disrupted by the memory lapse of the husband. The story is brought to life by the acting of the three main actors – Richarson and Margaret Leighton as the couple and the medical doctor, Jack Hawkins.

A veteran of World War II (1939-45), the dutiful husband is stricken with an anxiety attack that causes him to relive his days in battle. When this mental episode is over, he cannot remember what happened for a full 24-hour period. Husband and wife are perplexed and anxious by this sudden turn of events. They turn to their understanding family doctor for an explanation. The doctor, Jack Hawkins, is sympathetic and not overly worried but eager to find out the source of the problem.

As it turns out, a theft and murder occurred that seem to implicate the husband or so the couple fears. Lies and cover-ups complicate the matter and the couple become so upset that they make things worse for themselves. The couple are so used to their routine that a sudden and unexplained twist becomes exaggerated. The story presents us with a puzzle and the reaction of two decent but somewhat docile human beings, who feel they will be unfairly targeted by the authorities. However, the police go about their work very calmly and before long everything is explained.

The movie is a throwback to a time when ordinary people enjoyed simple pleasures like going to their club, or taking in the “pictures” and growing their chrysanthemums in the adjoining greenhouse garden…so very British.

It is these very ordinary people that I have a great sympathy and admiration for in our often self-serving world. Nothing extraordinary about the movie or the couple but almost 60 years on, the acting still makes it a delight to watch.

Strangely unsettling

Many seem to dismiss this movie as a mild matinée entertainment. I found it very unsettling as the story deliberately starts with a normal, boring situation only to depart from normality in an abrupt and disturbing way to offer a glare into the abyss of the human psyche. The first two or three minutes the viewer is given time to settle down for something that looks like a comedy. A cheerful caricature of a meek office clerk (Ralph Richardson) comes home. He meets his wife desperate, she tells him he has disappeared for 24 hours. The clerk is not aware of that.

Now, this is a standard situation for a comedy. But in this movie the couple in question is simply shattered. Time you cannot account for is regarded by them as abnormal, a potential sin. Distrust arises, the wife distrusts her husband and, what’s worse, the husband distrusts himself. The situation gets worse when the clerk learns that a member of a club he belongs to was murdered during the time in question. In desperation he goes to see a doctor (Jack Hawkins) and tells him of his memory loss and the murder. He also tells him that he thinks he might have committed the murder. As the doctor tries to laugh that off the clerk says: But I absolutely hated that man. He does that with an unexpected vehemence that it really made me jump.

The riddle can be solved and the story has a happy ending. The clerk’s amnesia was caused by subconscious memories of bombing raids, a backfiring car made him go into shock for 24 hours, luckily in a „safe place” (a pub). As a matter of fact, the discovery of this hidden vulnerability is horrific and was probably not uncommon the time this movie was made. And the way the main protagonist practically bends over double to put blame on himself is heart-wrenching. Ralph Richardson gives a deep, feeling performance in this unusual psychological drama about guilt, trust, order and disorder. He also directed.

Best footage of long lost Ocean Park “High Boy” coaster.

Growing up in L.A. always meant a fun trip to Pacific Ocean Park near Venice and riding the “Sea Serpent” roller coaster–and taking a whirl on the “Laff In The Dark” dark ride (while getting creeped-out by the caged “Laffing Sal” in her polka dotted dress who cackled at you from behind bars). “Man In The Dark” takes us back to 1953, and a pre-POP era, when amusement parks were generally seedy and frightening, especially Ocean Park as it was known then (POP came about after Disneyland was built in 1955, and gussied-up by CBS who had purchased it and turned it into a family-oriented theme park-by-the-sea). The “Sea Serpent”–which was “modified for family riding” by CBS in 1957-58 for the new POP, was originally known as the “High Boy”… a John Miller out-and-back masterpiece built circa 1927. This ride was a true thriller…and can be seen to full advantage in this rarely screened noir drama. Laffing Sal was there too, perched above a fun house back then, and she steals the show in many scenes shot to take full advantage of the 3-D process. Since I had experienced both parks back in the ’50’s through its last season in 1968 before it was torn down, I really wanted to see this movie. I wasn’t disappointed. Although not up to the standards of “D.O.A.” by a longshot, the movie holds one’s interest from the get-go, further capturing the sleeziness old L.A. of the ’50’s as a place you didn’t want to go to if you were trying to stay out of trouble…or if you were on the lam. Edmond O’Brien holds is own, but the other characters do seem a trifle cartoonish to be truly believable. Audrey Totter comes off a little too harsh (even for her) to be considered an attractive prize. The interior shots come off as being filmed a little too flat, but once the film goes on location to the run-down areas around Ocean Park (a real slum at the time), and the park itself, the noir experience kicks-in…Big Time! You can’t really call this film a “B-Noir Classic” because its almost impossible to find today…not in the league of “Gun Crazy” (shot at Ocean Park too!) or “D.O.A” or a host of others… but Google it…and you’ll find it! Then judge it for yourself.

Interesting 3D oddity

I watched most of Man in the Dark without realising it was originally shot in 3D. At first I thought I was watching a lost Fritz Lang classic—extreme closeups, odd points of view, shattering glass—until I remembered the film had been directed by, ahem, Lew Landers. Now nothing against old Lew, he delivered many a fine B picture, but Man in the Dark doesn’t look like your typical Columbia programmer. It’s black and white take on the 3D process is more noir than you’d expect and it obviously helped to have Floyd Crosby behind the camera. Edmond O’Brien and Audrey Totter are good as always, overcoming a pretty hackneyed script that is the film’s major shortcoming. Worth seeing for the dream sequence alone, where O’Brien is pursued by policemen in bumper cars!!

Noirish 3-D thriller still has a little bit of fizz left in it

Edmond O’Brien has a severe case of retrograde amnesia, but he didn’t contract it in the Pacific. He’s a robber who got away with $130,000 in a Christmas Eve heist, was convicted and served his time. But he’ll get a second chance if he submits to an operation to excise the criminal portion of his brain. Understandably, he’s conflicted, and when they move it up from the scheduled day he balks: `I was born on a Monday. I may as well go on one – like dirty laundry.’ But the operation proves a stunning success, so delicate that it erases all memories of his past life but leaves him with a perfect command of American slang.

But the placid life he leads at the sanitarium – pruning hedges and daubing canvases – comes to an abrupt halt when he’s kidnaped by his old gang, now led by Ted De Corsia. They want the money, which was never recovered; so does an implacable Javert of an insurance investigator. Even his old girlfriend (Audrey Totter) sees him only as a ticket to the high life, until she falls for the new, improved O’Brien and renounces her grasping ways. (The often ill-used Totter shines here, especially on a martini bender when she asks the bartender, `Oh, Fred, what do you do when you hate yourself?’)

Odd clues begin to surface from O’Brien’s troubled nightmares, however, leading him and Totter (with the rest of the cast plus the police in pursuit) to claim a parcel left at an amusement park. And this is the big set-piece of the movie, originally released in 3-D. Cars come whooshing around the curves and down the dips of a roller coaster while pitched battles are being fought on the tracks. Watching these 3-D movies now is like drinking soda that’s gone flat: All the ingredients are there but the sparkle’s gone. But in their endearingly gimmicky way, they evoke their era, as do the flats equipped with party lines and furnished with lampshades bearing reproductions of paintings. Man in the Dark’s too short, and needs an extra layer of complexity. But there’s still a bit of fizz left in it.
