Good, but not great and stolen by Great Scott and Winfield

This is a made-for-TV flick about Iron Mike. As people have already commented there are several memorable and incredible performances given here. Scott is, to my mind, one of, if not the greatest American actor who lived in the last century. Along with Jason Robards, Jack Lemmon, Jimmy Cagney, and today Kevin Spacey. (Yes, I said it, Kevin ranks right up there with the all-time champs. Don’t believe me? See the movie he did with Annette Benning and Chris Cooper, then watch the Kaizer Soze flick. Unfortunately it is late and titles are escaping me…..)

So Scott steals the movie cursing and arguing and screaming his lungs out. By the way, after his death, it was rumored that D’Amato had forced Iron Mike to perform oral sex on him when Mike was a young boy under Cus’s tutelage. True or not, it would certainly explain a lot….Paul Winfield as Don King is a great match. His performance is much more believable here than Ving Rhames’s would be several years later on in “King”. Tony LoBianco is good to as Jim Jacobs who for years managed Tyson. Jacobs incidentally was a jack-of-all-trades, winning the US Handball Championship for Men, having the greatest private collection of fight films ever collected, and being an expert on comic books. Talk about your Renaisannce guys. The only weak link is Michael Jai White. He doesn’t really capture the caged-animal intensity of Iron Mike during his glory years. Tyson incidentally, should really consider making a film about his own life with actors of his choosing. Overall a good effort by some extremely talented actors.

Let’s Not Feel Sorry For A Convicted Rapist

I’ll be totally honest and say when Tyson beat Trevor Berbick to become the youngest world heavyweight champion I was mesmerised by this boxer . Lightning hand speed , power and someone who livened up the rather staid and fractured heavyweight division that was being left behind in a golden age of boxing that featured Leonard , Hagler , Hearns .Perhaps the most sympathetic thing about him was his tale of why he took up boxing , of the older kids beating him up and learning how to fight to merely survive the human jungle of New York’s mean streets . This however turned out to be a fairy tale and the reality was Tyson learned boxing in a reform school where he was sent to having carried a series of street robberies and where he met Cus D’Amato who effectively adopted the thug . It was D’Amato who steered Tyson from crime . As well as being a mentor he was also something a spin doctor and the myth of ” poor unfortunate victim of bullying ” was just that – a myth but it makes for a nice story . After all a violent sociopath is no role model , especially and ironically in the world of boxing where an audience in general and an American audience in particular like their heroes to be good guys . When D’Amato died in 1985 not long before Tyson became world champion the only calming force in Tyson’s life was gone and the boxer was heading for the rocks . Before his loss to Buster Douglas there were stories of street brawls outside the ring and his fights inside the ring were often farcical . The division lacked depth and his victories were either against fighters who were past their sell by date like Larry Holmes or against opponents who’d go out of their way to merely last the distance like Bonecrusher Smith or against opponents who’d be in awe and freeze such as Frank Bruno or Carl Williams . All this was before he was convicted of rape of course

To be fair this HBO bio-pic doesn’t sugar coat the boxer as much as I remember . It does point out that Tyson the child was disturbingly street wise and was heavily involved in crime ” Forty convictions ? Not even Al Capone had forty convictions ! ” . It also makes a point that even in his teen years Tyson had a run in over a girl and that he contracted venereal disease . Not much of a role model is he ? but at least it doesn’t paint him as a victim – well until later . Enter Paul Winfield who gives an all too realistic performance as Don King , a man so greedy and exploitative that he’s a walking advert for Stalinism .Winfield has a lot of fun in the role and while you might say the performance is a little too obvious it’d be impossible to play King in a subtle manner as he’s one of the most flamboyant , larger than life

characters in the world today . He goes out of his way to grasp the milk cow of Tyson in his talons . This is where things start falling apart to a degree . King exploits Tyson when he’s at his most vulnerable but remember Tyson is a street smart thug who one would expect to know all about King . Heck I was a skinny Scottish teenager in the 1980s living on an obscure Island and I knew all about Don King so why not Tyson ? Total greed on Tyson’s part wouldn’t have everything to do with it ? No of course not . . It also insinuates that Tyson fell in love with the wrong woman – Robin Givens – and this contributed to his downfall . Well if you beat up your wife you can’t blame her for walking out on you . Interesting this domestic abuse seems to be played down . Oh don’t tell me she was just interested in Tyson’s money . None of us are privy to the marriage between Givens and Tyson but if she was after Tyson’s money wouldn’t she have signed a pre nuptial agreement ? The amount of negative press against Givens from this period was disgraceful and it’s not like Tyson had a glittering reputation where violence outside the ring was concerned .

Disgracefully when the rape case was done and dusted there were those commentators who were quite happy to fling more innuendo about the rape victim crying rape due to Tyson’s wealth etc . The bio-pic does seem to suggest that we’re supposed to make up our own mind if Tyson was guilty or not but the fact that a jury who sat in court all day everyday and listened to all the evidence from all sides found Tyson guilty of rape so there’s no ambiguity involved – Tyson is a rapist and to suggest otherwise is a disgrace to both the victim and the rule of law

The movie “Tyson” chronicles Mike Tyson’s life as a 12 year old boy, with 38 arrests to his credit,in Brooklyn to the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. It was fame and fortune more then the mean streets of Bronsville Brooklyn that lead to Tyson’s downfall that eroded his talents in the ring and civility out of it. Tyson after being taken under the wings of “Trainer of Champions” Cus D’Amato who fine tuned his talents as a boxer as well has gave him, with Cus’s wife, a family passed away leaving Tyson alone and open to be exploited by wannabe shysters like boxing promoter Don King as well as gold diggers like his first wife Robin Givens and her Moma Ruth Roper. By the time they got through with Mike he not only ended up losing his title , “The Baddest Man on the Planet Earth”, as world heavyweight champion but most of his estimated hundreds of millions he won in the ring.

The knock-out punch that really did Tyson in was his conviction of raping 18 year old Miss African American contestant Desiree Washington whom many people who followed the trail feel Tyson was innocent of. We get to see a shy and at the same time out of control Mike Tyson turn his life around for the better with the help of his surrogate father Cus D’Amato who taught him to keep his aggressions in not out of the ring. It was Cus’ death that left Tyson open to all the troubles that was to haunt him all his professional and personal life. Becoming the youngest man to win the heavyweight crown at the age of 20 by knocking out Trevor Berbick in the 2nd round on November 22, 1986 in Las Vages Tyson was unstoppable in the ring successfully defending his crown nine times. That’s until he met journeyman boxer Buster Douglas in Tokyo Japan in early 1990. A 40 to 1 long-shot Duglas busted Tyson up for 9 rounds and in the 10th knocked him on queer street taking the title away from him. The fact that Tyson, who was drinking and partying instead of training for the fight, and his off the books manager Don King never took Douglas seriously was the main reason for his shocking defeat.

Just when Tyson was on his way to regain his lost heavyweight crown him becoming a judge in the Miss African American contest in Indiana ended up in a worst disaster then his loss to Douglas. Accused of rape by Miss Washington and standing trail it seemed that Tyson’s reputation more then the evidence, that everyone felt was flimsy, that convicted him. Now in the spring of 1995 a convicted rapist and registered sex offender Tyson is given a second or is it third chance to regain his champion belt is where the movie ends.

The film Tyson to its credit shows Mike Tyson as a both troubled youth and man who’s life suffered mostly from those who exploited his talents and money for their, not his, own personal gain. Still we can’t excuse Tayson for his life of crime, mostly as a youth, and violence since he had everything going for him and ended up blowing it. And with that he blew his chance of possibly being the greatest heavyweight, topping the likes of Ali Marciano Dempsey and Joe Louis,champion in boxing history.

Going all the way

While a documentary can have the distance approach, it would have been difficult to sell this one. This is all about feeling, all about emotion and all about emancipation. It is also about freedom and unity. About misunderstandings and clarifications. There is so much going on, that it’s amazing it’s not a longer movie/running time.

It works on almost all these levels, people are familiar with the person (be it because of her TV appearances or her nominations). But it’s still something different to see her personally or learn about her family and her father. You have to be a strong person to survive the things she has to face, but she still remains “human” (if that is a thing to say). A strong message is delivered and a powerful movie made …

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a highly inspirational documentary and a delight to watch.

Having saved the world so many times, how many superheroes have you seen on the cover of Time magazine? That’s right, they don’t exist. But real heroes do and they don’t need superpowers or a fancy costume to stand in the face of injustice. As a defender of truth and equality in the times we live in, this is the incredible true story of Malala Yousafzai, a real hero whose only weapon is indelible courage.

From Academy Award winning director Davis Guggenheim and produced by Imagenation Abu Dhabi, He Named Me Malala is part documentary, part animation, and part live action, but wholly narrated by Malala and her father Ziauddin Yousafzai. Although the use of animation is questionable, these segments are used as plot points leading up to the day when Malala was shot in the head by the Taliban. If not, Guggenheim would have had to reenact those moments using real actors but at the risk of discounting the authenticity of this documentary. Along with actual news footage and still images, much of the story is a reiteration of her courage, her ordeal, her survival, and her dedication as a right-to-education activist. While this might seem all too familiar to anyone following the news, the documentary doesn’t feel scripted or even overladen with praise. And why shouldn’t it be? This is about the assassination attempt on a 15-year-old girl whose only crime was speaking out on her basic right to an education.

Inspired by her memoir I Am Malala, the film begins in Birmingham, United Kingdom, in 2013, where the Yousafzai family is based post recovery period. Although you don’t see a scar, Malala bears a lopsided smile whenever she is asked a question. There is sadness in her eyes along with bashful insecurity but also wisdom and an inner strength much beyond her age. “Three years have passed”, she recalls, not of the attempt on her life, but having left her beautiful home in the Swat Valley province of Pakistan. Surrounded by Afghani Mountains, we are shown images of this scenic region (which is always presented as a place of bloodshed and massacre by the media) before Malala begins her story. This is also where the narrative shifts from Malala to her father, beginning with his version of a ‘love marriage’ to Malala’s mother. As a self-taught public speaker, Ziauddin’s story is as incredible as his daughter Malala’s. While it’s clear where the latter gets her courage and insight from, it’s the development of a symbiotic father-daughter relationship that makes this a documentary that must be seen.

Riveting, and at times overwhelming, He Named Me Malala is a delight to watch, and so is Malala Yousafzai. Guggenheim could have stuffed this film with geopolitical propaganda and ended it with a bleeding cry for justice. When asked if they caught the person who shot his daughter, Ziauddin replies “Not a person, but an ideology”. Likewise, Malala has her own quips, and along with her brothers and her father add refreshingly funny moments given the subject matter. At the same time and given her status as a public figure, at no point does Malala seem like a celebrity, nor does she see herself that way. What you do see is a shy teenager but one that is utterly brave and honest with the kind of raw dedication that outflanks millions, possibly billions, of people her age. The fact that Malala was featured on Time magazine twice, followed by her becoming the youngest ever recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 proves my last statement.

He Named Me Malala is highly inspirational and the type of film where you clap in the end, only to realize that you’ve clapped too early. Malala is only 18 now, but she has achieved far more than any of us ever will. That itself is worth a standing ovation and I wish her a long life of success in her fight for equality and education with many more accolades to come.

What did you do as a teenager?

Greetings again from the darkness. One would be hard-pressed to name anyone currently on the planet who is more deserving of having her story told than Malala Yousafzai. In case you don’t recognize the name, Malala is the teenage girl who was shot in the head by the Taliban for speaking out in favor of education for Pakistani girls.

Unlike her namesake in the legendary story told to open the film, this Malala somehow survived the gunshot and has continued her mission of spreading the importance of education throughout the globe. Her efforts resulted in her being named the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2014. This girl is extraordinary and inspiring.

Davis Guggenheim has proved his expertise in the documentary world with excellent work in Waiting for Superman (2010) and his Oscar winner An Inconvenient Truth (2006). Though Malala may be his most fascinating subject to date, this is probably not his best filmmaking. The extensive use of animation distracts from Malala’s story, and also Guggenheim’s attempts to show the teenage girl that exists alongside the global activist are often disjointed. We enjoy seeing her warm and sincere interactions with her brothers and her embarrassment at low grades on school work, but each time one of these sequences begins, the film abruptly shifts to another incident – possibly as a reminder to us that her life is anything but normal.

Some of the film’s highlights include Malala’s speech to the United Nations assembly, the crime scene photographs of the bus on which she and her friends were shot, and those moments when she lets her emotions roam free … she mutters “It’s so hard to get things done in this world”. We feel her pain and find ourselves wanting to stand with Malala.

Much of what we see is from her promotional tour to support her book “I am Malala”, and it’s her words and commitment to the cause that leave such an impression. Guggenheim hints that her father may have pushed her into this life, but this wise-beyond-her-years young woman has more than earned our respect and admiration. She convinces us that the best way to “arm” young people around the world is with books and a pen … the most powerful weapons. Her courage and commitment cause us to question our actions as 17 year olds. What a truly extraordinary person she is.

On his deathbed Tudor-king Henry VIII remembers his long reign and especially the crucial part his six marriages played in it, without producing the male heir he desired most to prevent civil wars for the succession as England suffered before his father’s ascent. His first queen, Spanish princess Kathryn of Aragon, had one fatal flaw: her children died, except daughter Mary, so he pressed Rome for an annulment, and when that failed out went cardinal Wolsey as chief minister and Henry made himself head of the Church of England instead of the papacy and married Anne Boleyn. When she too failed to produce a male heir, just princess Elisabeth, he had her head roll for ‘infidelity’. The third queen, gentle Jane Seymour, died giving birth to sickly prince Edward. For diplomatic reasons Henry married minor princess Anne of Cleves, whose utter lack of female charms causes another annulment and the fall of Thomas Cromwell, who recommended her. Fifth is the lovely Catherine Howard, cousin of Anne Boleyn, but again childless and found to have been carnal with servants before and after her royal marriage, so also decapitated. Definitive Tudor story

This is benchmark-quality drama, a two-hour film retelling of the lives (and deaths) of Henry VII’s wives that uses much the same cast and crew as a previous six-hour BBC miniseries.

As a film, it’s pretty much unbeatable and sets a standard of high quality that few others can match. Sets, costumes and backdrop are all superb, but of course the real strengths lie in the script and the calibre of acting. Keith Michell stars in a role he was born to play, never less than authentic whether he’s playing Henry as an athletic young man or as an obese ancient. He also manages to make the tyrant deeply human, which is another string to his bow.

With the full story of the six wives crammed into a two-hour time slot, the pacing is fast and the script full of drama. Some of the wives fare better than others, but highlights include Charlotte Rampling’s witchy Anne Boleyn and Lynne Frederick’s captivating innocent, Catherine Howard. Filling the supporting cast with familiar, entertaining figures like Michael Gough, Donald Pleasence and Brian Blessed is another plus.

Most of all, though, I found this retelling succeeded far better in bringing to life the era than others – check out the terrible THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL for a good comparison. We learn much about politics, entertainment and religion of the era, but it’s never told in a dry or heavy way. Unbeatable? Yes, I think this is.

Rather compressed perhaps, but one of the better films and such detailing of Henry VIII, his life and his wives

Although I am no historian, I do take an interest in the subject and I loved learning about the Tudors even in primary school. Henry VIII and his Six Wives is for me one of the better films and such detailing of Henry VIII and his life and six wives. The story is compelling and well paced and the dialogue is intelligent and moving. For me, my only complaint really is the length, the events and details are compressed for just over two hours. For so many details and events, I couldn’t help thinking it was too short and some of the events could have been expanded upon and some of the latter half less over-balanced perhaps. That fault aside, the film is splendidly directed, is reasonably true to history and maintains a strong emotional impact. David Munrow’s music score is beautiful and evocative too. But two things especially stood out. One was the period detail and production values, the costumes and scenery are nothing short of splendid and the photography captures that beautifully. The other is the acting, which is wonderful from the entire cast. Keith Michell gives a textbook example of how to play Henry VIII, he doesn’t play the famous king as a tyrant but his portrayal is a moving and somewhat more sympathetic one. Of his wives a stunning Charlotte Rampling and suitably vulnerable Lynne Frederick come off best, while Bernard Hepton is a fine Cramner and Donald Pleasance is a wonderfully devious Cromwell. In conclusion, a very good film. 8/10 Bethany Cox

What would it be like to be a Tudor king?

I first saw this film, aged about ten, as a result of my great interest in the famous King Henry and I think possibly also because I was in the middle of writing a short play about him. It’s been a while since I saw this, but – looking back – I think I was perhaps a bit young to view it back then. There’s nothing explicitly gory or violent but some scenes – on reflection – are perhaps a bit much for children of that age.

Nevertheless, it does tell the story of Henry and his wives, even if you get the sense that some things (the real Catherine of Aragon, for instance, was pregnant about six times, but you’d never know it from this – one might get the impression that she only had two children before Henry tired of her) are brushed over a bit. In keeping with the real time span, a lot of time is concentrated on Catherine and her successor Anne Boleyn although I seem to remember that nothing much is made of, for instance, Henry’s need to marry the pregnant Anne before she bore the future Elizabeth I.

Although the story is told in flashback and some major points in history (eg. the dissolution of the monasteries) are dealt with through scene montages, you do get a flavour of Henry VIII’s character and life – notice how the plainly-dressed Jane Seymour becomes more decorated as she gains the king’s notice – and even an idea of communication in Tudor times (he decided to marry Anne of Cleves because he saw a miniature of her). It occurs to me that the focus on Henry may be a disadvantage – we don’t see Anne of Cleves adapt to life as the King’s sister, we don’t see the Holy Roman Emperor enraged when his aunt Catherine of Aragon is being divorced, we don’t see much of the infant Elizabeth I at all.

One opinion this film formed for me was the idea that Katherine Howard was very much a victim of fate. I have read that the real woman was sexually precocious (although this film merely gives the impression that she was a bit flirty) because of her grandmother’s lack of moral guidance, but this interpretation made me think that the Duke of Norfolk, head of the Howards, suddenly jumped on an opportunity to get into Henry’s good books by pushing a young family member under the King’s nose (apparently unaware of his teenage niece’s past – she must certainly have been the least suitable member of his family to have been promoted in this way) without bothering to properly consider his actions.

Little is made of Catherine Parr – after Henry’s dispatch of his fifth queen – and one gets the impression that he settled into a happy family life, failing to mention that he did in fact have the unfortunate woman investigated due to her religious convictions. However, my A-Level history lessons led me to believe that mediaeval kings were quite at liberty to be ruthless despots, and Keith Michell certainly gives us an idea that Henry was that way inclined.

Romy Schneider Conquers Great Britain

In between saving the Austro-Hungarian Empire for her screen husband as Sissi, Romy Schneider took the time out to rule Great Britain in her own right. Here she humbly but effortlessly wins the hearts of all (except for her controlling mother, of course) with her fearless determination to read newspapers and do the right thing.

In order to put her off from interfering too much with their running things, her ministers decide to marry her off to Prince Albert, whom she has never met; she objects, as does Albert. Fortunately, G*d watches over fools and constitutional monarchs, and they are both hiding out in the slums of Windsor, where rough seafaring men play Stephen Foster tunes. It’s a place they can meet cute and fall in love without interfering with the fiction that this was anything but a love-match in any version of reality.

It’s another of the cream-puff costume dramas that Ernst Marischka wrote and directed Miss Schneider in. Here, various high-class locations around Vienna stand in for various high-class locations around Britain. The Austrian audiences must have lapped up the luxury after the devastation of two world wars over forty years.

Beautiful Introduction to Sissi Trilogy

Ernst Marischka, one of the most respected Austrian directors of that time, made films full of beautiful scenes, delicate love and with respect to all that is precious in life.

Nowadays, if people should hear about him, they associate the name of Marischka with SISSI trilogy (1955,1956,1957). However, he made other excellent films like DAS DREIMADERLHAUS (1958), EMBEZZLED HEAVEN (1958) and definitely this one, MADCHENJAHRE EINER KONIGIN showing the young years of queen Victoria. Although it deals with a slightly different theme than SISSI films, I do not see many differences between this movie and SISSI. They are strikingly similar.

The movie is almost identical. The style, the music, the photography. In fact, the crew are almost the same. Anton Profes, Bruno Mondi!

The cast… Romy Schneider’s one of the first main roles. It was a lovely introduction to her role of Sissi since this film was made one year before the first part of the trilogy about the Austrian empress. It is also a film where Romy plays with her mother, Magda Schneider. But Ernst Marischka was not the first director who cast Romy to play with her mum. Romy’s debut, WENN DER WEISSE FLIEDER WIEDER BLUHN (1953) was her performance with her mother, too. Therefore, there were some voices that Romy began her Austrian career on the bases of her mother’s fame. Indeed, there is some truth in it.

Again, like in SISSI, this film shows love very gently. Victoria meets Prince Albert in a little inn in Dover. Their sympathy is based on pure exaltation in dance and gentle smiles. And now…? What would it be showed like? Only sex… But is it the only thing love is based on?

I am grateful to Ernst Marischka for these movies. They had a soul and a message. Some people may call them kitschy, but I will never give up admiring these films. They are IMPRESSIVE!!! UNFORTUNATELY, HIGHLY UNDERRATED!

Enjoyable fluff

It’s interesting that the DVD producers seemed to try to make people think this was one of Romy Schneider’s immensely popular Sissi movies. However popular this trilogy of films was, this is NOT one of them but is a story of part of Queen Victoria’s life–and has nothing to do with the Austria-Hungarian empress, though they both lived during the same period. Now because this is about Victoria, it is a tad confusing, as everyone’s speaking German during the film. Her future husband, Albert, was German and she could speak the language, but in this film set in the UK and France it is odd hearing nothing but German!

The film begins just before Albert and Victoria meet–but it is pure romantic fiction. The Princess is about to become queen when the film begins. Soon, King William dies and she is now queen. When she’s told she must marry, she has no interest in a proposed marriage to a German prince (Albert) and instead takes off for a trip to France. On the way to Dover, by chance, she stops at an inn and meets a man who she falls head over heels for–not realizing it is Albert himself! It may sound like I am providing a spoiler, but this also is divulged in the summary listed on IMDb.

If you think about it, the plot is very much like the plot of the first Sissi film–a member of the royalty longs for life outside court and ends up meeting and falling in love with their future husband. The big difference is what’s not in the film–that Victoria practically worshiped Albert, whereas Sissi and her husband, Franz Josef, were about as compatible as a wolverine and a hyena! Also, you may notice that Romy Scheider looks and acts like she did in her Sissi films–and little like Victoria. So is it worth seeing? Well, yes…if you like romantic fluff. This isn’t meant as pejorative–but the film has very little depth and isn’t exactly a biography–more a story of the couple that COULD have happened…but didn’t. If you are looking more for the real life of Victoria, try watching “The Young Victoria”–it’s so much closer to the facts and lacks all the romanticism–which is good, since the real story of the couple is, in fact, quite romantic and sweet. Watchable but not a lot more.

Big Voice has Big Heart

This documentary focuses on the true trials and tribulations of adolescence. A team of high schoolers must learn to work together and learn the important values of what it means to set goals and the hard work it takes to meet them. Their choir director is a sage – he’s seen it all before, but still, with each new school year, he is challenged to his maximum. Competition docs are interesting because they have a clear finish line, but this doc is special because it doesn’t shy away from the grit and process that it takes to get to that award winning performance. The cast of high schools is vibrant, as are their parents. A great film to watch with your family!

Big Voice is Awesome

Big Voice is an amazing documentary that really draws you in. The documentary has been edited like a fictional film so you feel like you’re watching a story unravel. You really learn what it takes to be a great teacher and artist. Mr. Huls pushes the students to do their best work and the students push back (you have to see it to find out what happens). The documentary reminded me of my high school years, which made the film even more enjoyable. Big Voice feels like it could be set in any school in any state. Anybody who loves high school choir, inspirational films, documentaries, the creative process or just want to laugh and cry should watch Big Voice. I recommend the documentary to anybody who can to watch Big Voice in a theater because the experience is even better. Either way, I’m sure you’ll love it.

Big Voice masterfully uses the art of documentary to remind us of the the power and importance of arts education. We experience a school year with the struggles and joys of students in their challenging high school choir. Their teacher/director, Jeffe Huls is tough but inspirational, serious yet fun. The dramatic turns of the film are weaved together with a masterful skill by director Varda Bar-Kar that reminds us just how very much we actually had on our shoulders in high school. Music and art and aspiration adds to that load for the students here, but they more importantly provides an escape, a passion and camaraderie unique to the choir room.

Documentary so often excels as a catalyst for important discourse. See this movie, share it with others, and then discuss the importance of music education in schools with all who will listen. Budget cuts and apathetic politics have been threatening and dismantling arts education for years.

Help to use this film about inspiration and education as a tool to educate and inspire.

Brilliant,feelings nostalgia

Great acting and special the punjab culture brings to the screen was most important thing and directer done his job very well. Music is great but not ar Rehman special. Set design production at next level. Dijit prov it again he is real actor. Songs are nearly 80s music. Worth to see movie and acting. Preneti chopra done her role perfectly. It real really imatiz Ali gem and he prove it. Dinette acting impressive and getting day by day. I was expecting great lyrics from Irshad kamil but I think he just just write the songs not put his efforts like other movie. The worth watch movie to see in ci.

A commentary on censorship and cancel culture.

“Who decides what should people listen to?”

A really well made biopic about an artist who was a victim of cancel culture in the worst way. Imtiaz Ali tells the story of Amar Singh Chamkila, a musician who became the highest selling artist of Punjab by writing and performing vulgar songs. He was not the only one writing such songs, nor were his songs the most distasteful in the industry. But he was the one who gained the most popularity. And so, had to suffer the consequences.

And in telling this person’s story, Ali doesn’t take his side by justifying his lyrics. He doesn’t make a hero out of Chamkila. He just presents him as he was. An artist who created music according to the audience’s taste. An ordinary person who did not have the luxury to think about rights and wrongs. He just produced what he saw and heard around him.

Ali’s choice of using animation, documentary styled storytelling, and real life footages makes the film work quite well. Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra do commendable works in portraying their characters. The decision of making them sing the songs is praiseworthy.

Add to that the original music of AR Rahman, and lyrics penned by Irshad Kamil that capture the essence of the events and the Punjabi culture extremely well. The editing is some of the best you’ll find in an Indian film. On a technical standpoint, this is one of the better biopics to come out of Bollywood.

An excellent biography. Diljith at his best

Watched Hindi movie Amar Singh Chamkila on Netflix starring Diljith Dosanjh, Parineeti chopra directed by Imtiaz Ali.

This is a story of a real punjabi singer of same name who was shot dead when he was in his peak of music career. He was the highest record selling artist in punjab during 70’s and 80’s A ordinary poor singer who slowly becomes famous due to his vulgar songs . Vulgar or double meaning lyrics used in songs create a big fame in punjab and he just becomes famous not only in India but other counties like the gulf, UK and Canada.

All his original songs were used . The makers cleverly showed the real pictures, videos and old footages of the singer and his wife on many scenes.

During the songs they show the hindi meanings also of the lyrics so that people can understand. I really liked that part because songs were pure punjabi and not everyone understands that even some hindi speaking audiences.

What a stellar performance by Diljith he just lived the character throughout. Superbly acted and very well supported by Pareeniti chopra who plays his second wife.

Imtiaz Ali is back as a director after 3-4 years and has crafted this biography superbly.

One of the best hindi movies I watched in recent times.

The movie will take you back in the 70s and 80s the way the art directors have created the set to show the old punjab is fantastic.

Good background score by A. R. Rahman and songs are also nice.

Do watch it if you want to enjoy a good hindi movie, with songs, emotions and a nice biography of a great singer.

A lot of historical inconsistencies …..

If you want to see what the real Sonny was all about, watch HBO’s documentary “Sonny Liston: The Mysterious Life and Death of a Champion”. Its brilliant!! This movie…well not so good. Ving Rhames is great as usual. Problem is he may be a tad old for the role, plus he didn’t have much to work with here. A lot of what we know about Sonny was historically inaccurate or missing. No harassment from Ali(a young Cassius Clay) before, or after the Patterson rematch. Ali (Clay) made Liston’s life hell for over a year before their first fight. No scene detailing Sonny slapping Ali’s face in a casino. Not even a mention of his first fight against Marty Marshall. Liston suffered a broken jaw in the fourth round before losing a close 8-round decision. But you wouldn’t know it from this film. Sonny was no choirboy nice-guy for sure. But he deserves better than Phantom Punch.

The mystery has been solved

Robert Townsend said in reports that he wanted to show the true Sonny Liston and he said, “History hasn’t been kind to Sonny Liston.” He goes and he makes Liston’s death look like a suicide instead of a murder? He shows Liston just plain quitting on the stool in his first fight with Ali? He shows Liston trying to blind Ali in the first fight? He shows Liston throwing the Ali rematch for no apparent reason? Townsend is an idiot. This movie is so bad it makes Meteor Man look like a masterpiece.

I was unfortunate enough to see this movie and now I know why it was never released. It is a piece of garbage. This is one of the worst movies I’ve ever scene. Not only is it a terrible boxing movie, but it’s an awful biopic. I was really shocked at how bad this movie was. I couldn’t wait for a movie about Sonny Liston and this is what I got? This movie hasn’t been released to theaters and it never will be. If Townsend is lucky, maybe the movie will get released straight to DVD or maybe they will put it on TV. But I don’t see this doing well wherever it goes.

Meteor Man failed to mention in his movie that Liston was the favorite in his fights with Ali. In the first fight, Liston was a 7-1 favorite. It would make all the sense in the world for him to take a dive for the mob. I read accounts that Liston said he was “only following orders” when he quit on the stool. Another stupid part of the scene that had me shaking my head was the part when Townsend shows them putting a foreign substance on his glove to blind Ali. First of all, Liston did not need to cheat. Liston was a great fighter. He was one of the toughest fighters in history and he wasn’t afraid of anyone. This is a man that knocked out the great Floyd Patterson in 2 minutes. Then it only took him 5 seconds more in the rematch. He slugged it out in 2 wars with Cleveland Williams. He fought a whole fight with a broken jaw and only lost a split decision to Marty Marshall. Second of all, why would Liston try to cheat in a fight that he was going to throw? There’s no doubt something got in Ali’s eyes during the fight, but to say Liston put it there is ridiculous and there is no proof. In the end of the fight Townsend tries to make you believe Liston just quit like a spineless bum. I know some people would love to believe Ali was this mighty man that overcame Sonny Liston, but let’s get real. That’s not the way it was.

The movie gets to the big moment, the infamous “phantom punch.” The scene is so uneventfully done in the movie it’s pathetic. Townsend never even tells you why Liston took a dive in the rematch. He just goes down for no apparent reason. Townsend had the nerve to keep the mob out of that fight too. That fight was fixed. It looked like even more of a sham than the first fight.

This movie failed to show Sonny Liston’s hard upbringing. It also failed to show that he really wasn’t a bad guy and that he loved children and even tried to help people that were less fortunate. One of the biggest slaps in the face to Liston is how they handle his death in the movie. Instead of showing Liston getting murdered they make it look like a suicide. I was completely outraged. I didn’t think Townsend could be that dumb. In the movie they make it look like Liston was depressed over his girlfriend on the side leaving him, so he does heroine one night. The guy was deathly afraid of needles. He never did drugs in his life. Sonny Liston was M-U-R-D-E-R-E-D.

You want the real scoop on Liston, get the book The Devil and Sonny Liston by Nick Tosches. Nick Tosches did what Townsend lied about saying he was going to do. Townsend made Liston look like a no good bum, but that wasn’t the real Liston. Townsend should be ashamed of himself. Check out the Tosches book. Avoid this horribly written and directed movie at all costs. I do not recommend buying it or renting it. It’s not even worth watching on TV. I don’t think Townsend was taking his job seriously when he made this movie. By the looks of it, it’s like he was just fooling around. If you were wondering why this movie was never released, you have your answer. The mystery has been solved.

Ving Rhames stellar performance is the only reason to see this bio of Sonny Liston

Ving Rhames turns in another stellar performance as Sonny Liston in Robert Townsend’s film of Liston’s rise and fall. Liston was an ex-con who rose through the ranks of professional boxing to take on Cassius Clay before he was felled by a “phantom punch” and his own demons. Rhames is truly amazing as Liston and you feel for him. Unfortunately the rest of the film is nowhere near his level with some bad performances, a weak script with awful dialog and a directorial style that makes this tough going. If it wasn’t for Rhames performance I would day that the film isn’t worth bothering with, but he’s so good that he really should be seen if this comes across your TV screen on cable

A Nice Biopic of the Legendary Srimulat Group

At first I thought this movie was just another remake of the various famous Indonesian comedy icons. So I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually more like a biopic of the Srimulat group from their early years.

What I loved the most in here was definitely the exceptional performance of majority of the cast who managed to make us believe they were the real Srimulat members, not only through their posture likeness but also through their body language, facial expressions and the way they spoke.

It was made even better by the trademark slapstick jokes that we loved, as they certainly brought back a lot of fond memories of our childhood years. Though this movie might be more challenging to be enjoyed by the new generations who were not familiar with them, it certainly would be much appreciated by those who have known them before like me and my wife. Still it is a wonderful tribute to the beloved & legendary Srimulat and we could not wait for the second part.

Decent, but that’s it.

We can feel the passion, whether it’s behind or in front of the camera. A nice reintroduction effort of the Indonesian legendary comedy troupe. While entertaining and quite amusing, the film struggles in balancing its dramatic and comedic tone or conveying a clearer narrative since it’s deploying more fragmented storytelling instead of a straightforward one.

Feels like sketches, bits, and pieces of a larger film

Fajar Nugros’ ‘Srimulat: Hil yang Mustahal – Babak Pertama’ feels like sketches, bits, and pieces of a larger film. Certain writing decisions towards the film’s treatment of a biopic may have seemed revolutionary on paper, but without strong emotional layering and execution to back it up, the results are simply bland. The performances are enjoyable, but the movie ultimately lets its audience down.

Best movie on “real” country music!

I was fortunate to have been invited to the first screening of Heartworn Highways when it was shown to the New York press in 1981. A young struggling musician at the time, I was mesmerized by the power and soul of these contemporary singer/songwriters. This is what “real” American country music was supposed to be, not the sequin fellas and big haired gals of Nashville. Years later I would have conversations with Guy Clark at the Crow’s Nest, a little bar in North Florida frequented by shrimpers and other assorted swamp rats about the “voice” of country music. Who would have believed that these magical music makers would become decades later, the bedrock for today’s true country. The director, Jim Szalapski, had been a friend and roommate in my younger days rambling through New York. We lost Jim a couple of years ago and with his passing went the genius that I will be forever grateful to for capturing the soul of American country music. Somewhere on that heartworn highway, Jimmy’s still looking out from a Mini-Cooper for a good story to tell. I’ve waited twenty five years to seen this film again, twenty five years too long.

Excellent Country Documentary

This film is about the “outlaw” country music movement of the 70s, when artists rejected the glossy, strings filled Nashville sound and made poignant, gritty music. Guy Clark, David Allen Coe, Charlie Daniels and more are featured. Townes Van Zandt really steals the show, though. Out in his ratty trailer he shown drinking whiskey and shooting bb guns. He sits down in the kitchen and plays some songs for his girlfriend and his elderly black neighbor (whose interactions with Townes are amazing) and plays some of the most amazing music you’ll ever hear. There are also some great scenes of a little local ensemble playing in a bar. This is a must-see film for fans of Real Country Music. The pop pablum was crap then and its crap now. Real country will live on.

Magical

In 1975, James Szalapski decided to make a film about country music. Instead of going to the big names, he was put in touch, via a mutual acquaintance, with bassist Skinny Dennis, a notorious hell-raiser who left little musical legacy when he died a short while later, but who was much loved by his friends, who included many of the most talented up-and-coming singer songwriters of that time. Among them was Guy Clark, whose house was a meeting place for geniuses such as Townes van Zandt, Steve Young, Rodney Crowell and even Steve Earle, then completely unknown but starting to make his musical career. It’s this network, centred on Clark, that occupies the heart of this film. Szalapski films them going about their normal lives: none of them are rich, none of them are famous, and crucially none of them expect to become either of those things by appearing in this film. But their wholly authentic love for their music, and their wholly exceptional abilities, enliven one of the most genuinely intimate (and musically sublime) documentaries you are likely to see. Szapalski also films a selection of other rootsy artists, but it’s with Clark and his friends, all utterly obscure at that time, where the film’s heart beats loudest. The new DVD contains extra performances cut from the original; many are good in isolation, but it’s to Sazpalski’s credit that the material he chose for inclusion suits the finished film better than that he omitted. A fine film, and (with Townes now dead) a poignant one as well.

Everybody has a right to their own opinion however in my view this is one of the most gripping films I’ve seen. Gillian Anderson is brilliant as Emily Maitless and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew made the best of what must have been a very awkward part to play. The rest of the cast did a good job as well. The running time of 1 hour 42 mins passed so quickly. Once again Netflix triumphs so well done to them. It’s not very often that there are decent tv and films around but thankfully this is definitely one of them in my humble opinion. I really found this production enjoyable. Well done to everyone involved.

A GREAT STORY OF THE TRAINWRECK INTERVIEW, WHERE PRINCE ANDREW REVEALED JUST HOW MUCH OF A REPULSIVE IDIOT HE IS!

Yet again, Gillian Anderson absolutely nails her character, Emily, the way she did with Thatcher. The expressions during the interview with the Prince were so uncanny, you almost do a double-take to see if they’d spliced in actual footage! Billy was good as Sam, although her performance and the script didn’t quite capture Sam’s humour and her strengths that you can watch on longer interviews she’s done. Rufus did an adequate job as Prince Andrew, certainly with replicating the trainwreck interview sequence but I feel they could have touched on a bit more of his repulsiveness – however, the story is, afterall, from Sam’s point of view. When he gets out of the bath to check his phone, after the interview had just aired, it would have been a nice touch to see who had left the message ~ “Mummy”.

It’s alright

The film is based on Emily Maitlis’s 2019 BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with Epstein.

It is based on Sam McAlister’s book, Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the Most Shocking Interviews.

The real life people are matched well with similar looking actors.

I got sick of looking at the super ugly Chanel jacket. The journalist producer (Sam) doesn’t have that kind of lifestyle to believe she’d own luxury labels. The boss (Emily) might wear these.

I didn’t watch the original interview but knew vaguely about it. The film offers no big revelations to what’s been in the news.

The interview itself is compelling. The rest is a little ho hum.

The Epstein documentary on Netflix where they interview his victims is way more impactful and powerful.

Beautiful Introduction to Sissi Trilogy

Ernst Marischka, one of the most respected Austrian directors of that time, made films full of beautiful scenes, delicate love and with respect to all that is precious in life.

Nowadays, if people should hear about him, they associate the name of Marischka with SISSI trilogy (1955,1956,1957). However, he made other excellent films like DAS DREIMADERLHAUS (1958), EMBEZZLED HEAVEN (1958) and definitely this one, MADCHENJAHRE EINER KONIGIN showing the young years of queen Victoria. Although it deals with a slightly different theme than SISSI films, I do not see many differences between this movie and SISSI. They are strikingly similar.

The movie is almost identical. The style, the music, the photography. In fact, the crew are almost the same. Anton Profes, Bruno Mondi!

The cast… Romy Schneider’s one of the first main roles. It was a lovely introduction to her role of Sissi since this film was made one year before the first part of the trilogy about the Austrian empress. It is also a film where Romy plays with her mother, Magda Schneider. But Ernst Marischka was not the first director who cast Romy to play with her mum. Romy’s debut, WENN DER WEISSE FLIEDER WIEDER BLUHN (1953) was her performance with her mother, too. Therefore, there were some voices that Romy began her Austrian career on the bases of her mother’s fame. Indeed, there is some truth in it.

Again, like in SISSI, this film shows love very gently. Victoria meets Prince Albert in a little inn in Dover. Their sympathy is based on pure exaltation in dance and gentle smiles. And now…? What would it be showed like? Only sex… But is it the only thing love is based on?

I am grateful to Ernst Marischka for these movies. They had a soul and a message. Some people may call them kitschy, but I will never give up admiring these films. They are IMPRESSIVE!!! UNFORTUNATELY, HIGHLY UNDERRATED!

Enjoyable fluff

It’s interesting that the DVD producers seemed to try to make people think this was one of Romy Schneider’s immensely popular Sissi movies. However popular this trilogy of films was, this is NOT one of them but is a story of part of Queen Victoria’s life–and has nothing to do with the Austria-Hungarian empress, though they both lived during the same period. Now because this is about Victoria, it is a tad confusing, as everyone’s speaking German during the film. Her future husband, Albert, was German and she could speak the language, but in this film set in the UK and France it is odd hearing nothing but German!

The film begins just before Albert and Victoria meet–but it is pure romantic fiction. The Princess is about to become queen when the film begins. Soon, King William dies and she is now queen. When she’s told she must marry, she has no interest in a proposed marriage to a German prince (Albert) and instead takes off for a trip to France. On the way to Dover, by chance, she stops at an inn and meets a man who she falls head over heels for–not realizing it is Albert himself! It may sound like I am providing a spoiler, but this also is divulged in the summary listed on IMDb.

If you think about it, the plot is very much like the plot of the first Sissi film–a member of the royalty longs for life outside court and ends up meeting and falling in love with their future husband. The big difference is what’s not in the film–that Victoria practically worshiped Albert, whereas Sissi and her husband, Franz Josef, were about as compatible as a wolverine and a hyena! Also, you may notice that Romy Scheider looks and acts like she did in her Sissi films–and little like Victoria. So is it worth seeing? Well, yes…if you like romantic fluff. This isn’t meant as pejorative–but the film has very little depth and isn’t exactly a biography–more a story of the couple that COULD have happened…but didn’t. If you are looking more for the real life of Victoria, try watching “The Young Victoria”–it’s so much closer to the facts and lacks all the romanticism–which is good, since the real story of the couple is, in fact, quite romantic and sweet. Watchable but not a lot more.

Sissi light pretty much

“Mädchenjahre einer Königin” or “Viktoria in Dover” or “Victoria in Dover” or “The Story of Vickie” or “The Pursuit and Loves of Queen Victoria” is an Austrian German-language movie from 1954, so this one is already over 60 years old and to put in perspective this was the year when Sepp Herberger won the World Cup with his team, only you understand how long ago this came out. The director is Ernst Marischka and he worked together with actress Romy Schneider on many occasions, for example on the Sissi trilogy and this 105-minute-film we have here is a good indicator of things to come. The struggle with adapting to life as a royalty at a very young age, the different relationships with characters that have an impact on her life as the queen (soon to be) or finally the romance relationship with her future king: these are all aspects that play a major role in the Sissi films and they also play a big role in this movie we have here. You could actually say that these under 2 hours are Sissi condensed into one movie and you would be correct. At least partially. The real gravity and seriousness involving illness for example or children is missing in here and it’s all a bit on the lighter side. There is also probably at least as much comedy as in the three Sissi films together in this one movie. But it is a trailblazer for the trilogy without a doubt, the action only switched from England to Austria then. Yeah what else is there to say. You will find many actors in here who also play in the Sissi films. One to mention would be Magda Schneider, Romy’s mother, who starred alongside her in pretty much every project back then. Overall, I cannot say I enjoyed the movie too much. It suffered from problems that were fairly common in the 1950s when it comes to storytelling. However, I do believe the struggles here are different compared to the main problem of the Sissi movies. Both films/series are not really worth seeing, but for very different reasons. However, I would say that people who like Sissi will also like this one we have here. It’s one for the easily entertained I guess. I personally give it a thumbs-down as there were too many moments (drama and comedy) where the film was not working well at all. I recommend to watch something else instead.
