Godzilla Minus One Storyline

Feeling as if he unfairly cheated death too many times, Shikishima, a surviving Kamikaze pilot is attacked on Odo Island along with many war plane engineers by a gargantuan monster. A Fistfull of Rangers

These people obviously love the old “spaghetti westerns”. I was expecting Clint Eastwood to show up at any time. So true to the old genre that it’s almost camp. Even the music is true to the genre that I expected to hear the theme from The Good, The Bad,and the Ugly at any moment… Some of the lighting and background is obviously theatrical, and the editing from scene to scene is clipped in places. I don’t know why people are complaining so much when this was obviously more than a little tongue in cheek, with a tip of the hat to Italian westerns. Hey, who needs a plot when you’ve got the good guys against the bad guys? Viewed in that light, it was well-done. Pretty bad new age Western.

All the elements to makes this a great genre movie are present here, especially in its formulaic but yet promising story premise. Then where did it go wrong? By the characters and cast for starters.

The movie has an impressive cast and most do a more than fine job. It’s ironic that however the actors I were most worried about (Usher Raymond, Ashton Kutcher) did a great job playing their roles and the actors I was most confident about (Dylan McDermott, Tom Skerritt, among others) were miscast in the movie. But disappointing or not, every character in the movie lacked some good development and background. The main character (played by James Van Der Beek) start off promising but as the movie progresses you more and more begin to wonder to yourself what makes the main character so special or even relevant for the story. Dylan McDermott is a good actor and he also for most part is good in his role but he just isn’t convincing enough as an experienced tough dying gunslinger. It makes you wonder why Robert Patrick and McDermott didn’t switched roles in this movie. It would had made the story at least a bit more believable. The main villain is being played by Alfred Molina. Perfect you would think. The character however seriously lacks some development and depth which makes him a pretty shallow and way too uninteresting main villain for the movie. And then there are the actors who are just simply underused in the movie, such as Tom Skerritt. I mean does he even have lines in this movie? Cause I really can’t remember any. So poor casting and character treatment all around for this movie.

They tried very hard to make this movie a cool action movie, also with a bombastic action score from Trevor Rabin. But however the movie is lacking in way too many action sequences to make this a good genre movie. They also desperately tried to make the action moments cool, with quick shots and cuts, that however really don’t add up to each other and instead make the movie an incoherent one when it comes down to its action. The movie as a whole has poor editing all around. It almost seems as if this movie wasn’t even shot entirely and the movie was not put together until in the editing room, when it was too late to do some pick up shots.

Despite it’s promising premise, nothing in the movie really works out the way it was supposed to. It really is too bad because in its core this movie really had potential. But perhaps they should had known better not to touch the Western genre, that has been pretty death by now for the few past decades. This movie now is nothing more than a still somewhat watchable movie for on a rainy afternoon, that perhaps should had gone straight-to-video immediately instead.

Perhaps best watchable for the die hard genre fans only, everyone else can better just skip this one.

The sort of thing that Hollywood used to churn out by the dozen

In 1875, ten years after the end of the Civil War, Texas, especially the area along the Mexican border, is a wild, lawless place where ranchers and homesteaders are frequently threatened by bandits. The State Governor therefore decides to re-create the Texas Rangers, who had been disbanded after the Civil War, to uphold the law. The film follows the exploits of a company of Rangers led by Leander McNelly. The villain of the story is John King Fisher, the leader of a gang of outlaws who specialise in stealing cattle and then fleeing into Mexico, where the stolen cattle are sold to the Mexican army. The gang are ruthless killers, who have no compunction about murdering unarmed civilians in cold blood. It came as no surprise to discover that the film is loosely based on fact and that McNelly and King Fisher were real historical figures; “Leander McNelly” did not sound like the sort of name any scriptwriter would invent for a fictitious character. The film allegedly takes some liberties with the historical record, but these are unlikely to upset anyone other than experts on Texan history.

Although the Texas Rangers are, strictly speaking, a law enforcement agency rather than a military unit, the film bears more resemblance to a war movie than to a cop film. The plot is that old staple of war movies, the one about the tough, experienced commander who takes a group of raw recruits (most of them are young men with little or no experience of guns or policing crime) and turns them into a crack fighting unit. In their initial battle with the bandits, the Rangers fall into a trap, and many of the young and ill-trained men are killed. Nevertheless they regroup, attract new recruits and face off against Fisher and his men in a final showdown.

The film is directed by Steve Miner, previously known to me only as the man who made “Lake Placid”, a dreadful horror-comedy unlikely to appeal to anyone other than those who feel that there is something inherently hilarious about someone getting their head bitten off by a gigantic crocodile. Fortunately, Miner makes no attempt to inject comedy elements into “Texas Rangers”, and it is a better film than “Lake Placid”, although that is not really saying much.

The past few years have seen something of a revival of the Western genre. Many recent Westerns (“Dances with Wolves”, “Unforgiven”, “Wyatt Earp”, “3.10 to Yuma”) have been grand films made on an epic scale, but “Texas Rangers” is a much more modest, small-scale effort, more reminiscent of the old Western B-movies. Its total running time is very short for a twenty-first century film- the version I saw on British television recently only ran to eighty minutes. It is essentially a good-guys-versus-bad-guys Western of the old school with plenty of action and gunplay but without any deep significance. There are occasional attempts to inject a note of moral ambiguity- McNelly can be uncompromising in his methods- but there is little doubt that he and his men wear the metaphorical white hats and the Fisher gang the black ones. This is the sort of thing that Hollywood used to churn out by the dozen in the forties and fifties. 5/10

Lou (Kristen Stewart) works at a hard-core gym, unclogging toilets and being pressured by Daisy (Anna Baryshnikov) for a date.Jackie (Katy O’Brian) arrives in town and has sex with JJ (Dave Franco) in order to secure a job at a gun range. She has nowhere to stay, so she sleeps and works out underneath a nearby bridge.Lou visits her sister, Beth (Jena Malone), whose house is filled with children and suffers clear signs of domestic abuse from her husband, JJ. He leaves for work where he shows Jackie around and introduces her to the owner (Ed Harris).Jackie comes to work out at the gym, and Lou is immediately smitten by her. Her fantasies are interrupted by two FBI agents asking about her father, who she says she hasn’t talked to in years. Lou and Jackie chat outside, but are interrupted by two patrons asking Jackie out on a date. She refuses, then punches one in the face after he attempts to grab her. He hits her back and Lou rushes her inside. They talk about Jackie’s dream to go to Vegas to compete in the finals for a bodybuilding competition, so Lou offers her a stash of steroids from her office. While Jackie is initially reluctant, she agrees and Lou injects her with a vial. The two are clearly attracted to each other and begin making out, then leave for Lou’s apartment to have sex.The following morning, Lou laments that Jackie’s working at the gun range, as her estranged dad, Lou Sr., owns it. Lou agrees to let Jackie stay with her, leading to a period of love, sex, and steroid injections. On the way to dispose of the body, Daisy spots Lou and knocks on the window of JJ’s car to chat. The girls push the car into a large gorge, then set it on fire, sending smoke billowing into the sky. Lou assures Jackie that there are other things in the gorge that will point the police to someone else, so all they need to do is stay put in the apt. While Lou cleans up Beth’s house, Jackie takes many vials of steroids and breaks out of the house to go work out, which infuriates Lou. Still hyped up on steroids, Jackie headbutts Lou and hitchhikes to Vegas for the bodybuilding competition. While her individual performance originally goes well, she has a panic attack and vomits on the stage. When she sees other competitors laughing at her, she viciously attacks them and is arrested.Lou Sr. confronts Lou at the hospital about leading police to the gorge, as it has attracted attention to the bodies that he has dumped down there. When Lou arrives home, she runs into Daisy who begins asking questions about why she was driving JJ’s car that night. In order to silence her, Lou has sex with Daisy, who then answers the phone when Jackie calls from jail and tells her not to bother them. Instead, Lou Sr. bails Jackie out of prison and claims he can help her get out of this mess. Lou has continued seeing Daisy to find out what she knows, but when they return to Lou’s house, Jackie shoots Daisy in the face, then runs. Lou hides the body behind the couch when FBI agents arrive to continue asking questions about JJ, who was one of their biggest informants on Lou Sr. They reveal they know that Lou used to be Lou Sr.’s right-hand man, so she’d have enough information to put him away. Once they leave, Lou Sr. calls to tell Lou that he has Jackie and plans to pin the double homicide on her. Lou threatens to reveal everything to the FBI if he does that, so he sends over a corrupt policeman to kill her. She knocks him out, then goes to rescue Jackie, but runs into Beth who attacks her for killing JJ. Jackie is tied up in the garage, and after initially running from Lou, they embrace and make up. Lou sends Jackie off towards the car, while she goes to confront her dad, but he arrives and shoots Lou in the leg and prepares to kill her. Jackie, empowered by her love for Lou, appears as a 60ft. woman and pins Lou Sr. to the ground. Lou puts a gun in his mouth, but decides to leave him for the incoming police. The two girls drive into the desert, but Lou hears thumping from the bed of the truck and discovers that Daisy is still alive. As Jackie sleeps, Lou strangles Daisy and drags her body into the desert.

A love that bleeds

Rose Glass, the visionary director behind Saint Maud, throws another punch with Love Lies Bleeding, a neo-noir crime thriller that’s both stylish and unsettling. Lou, a cautious gym manager, has her world turned upside down when she develops feelings for Jackie, a dedicated bodybuilder in Las Vegas training for a competition (Katie O’Brian). Sparks fly, but their budding romance gets entangled with Lou’s dark family secrets, propelling them down a violent path.

Admittedly, the pacing can be uneven at times. The first act establishes the characters and their connection beautifully, but the middle section drags a bit as the focus shifts towards the criminal underbelly. However, the film regains its momentum in the final act, culminating in a climax that’s both shocking and strangely cathartic.

Technically, Love Lies Bleeding is a knockout. The cinematography is sharp, using bold colours and contrasting lighting to create a visually arresting world. The pounding score complements the film’s intensity, while the editing keeps the narrative taut without sacrificing character development.

Love Lies Bleeding isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s a film that revels in its own darkness, challenging us with its graphic violence and unconventional love story. But for those seeking a neo-noir experience that’s both thrilling and thought-provoking, this is a film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Love Lies Bleeding is a film with flaws, but its bold direction, phenomenal performances, and exploration of complex themes make it a worthwhile watch, especially for fans of unconventional thrillers. Just be prepared for a wild ride.

Mesmerizing to watch.

My first thought was it feels like the gym was depicted in the way someone who doesn’t go to the gym imagines the gym is like. Like they watched Pumping Iron instead of visiting the nearest gym. It’s like if Pumping Iron was a raunchy, lesbian, blood-soaked psychedelic experience. With a dash of crime family drama.

I found the cinematography of the movies to be quite impressive; it had a captivating aesthetic. Although it’s not on an epic scale and mostly unfolds in remote settings, it’s mesmerizingly filmed with themes of sex and violence. The characters are pretty good, so were the actors playing them. Kristen Stewart was Kristen Stewart, I think you already know what to expect when you see her in a movie, and I think she was pretty good. It took me a while to realize I recognized Katy O’Brian from The Mandalorian. I loved that she was homeless but still working out; if she can get swole living under a bridge, what’s your excuse? Lol.

Theres a huge emphasis on smoking and drugs, it’s a pretty big theme and mostly referenced on the radio. The story is alright, there’s a love, crime and family drama.

It’s quite raunchy. I wasn’t expecting that, but I suppose the movie did give off those vibes. I just didn’t watch any trailers or anything and went in blind. It also included some other adult/mature content like domestic violence. It’s quite gory as well. Initially, it felt like it was penned by a man; I was surprised to learn it was written/directed by a woman afterward. I recall thinking that there will probably be a lot of people commenting on this, expressing their displeasure with how women are portrayed in movies written by men.

The movie had several moments where I thought to myself, well that’s taken a weird turn. It gets more weird and weirder the longer in goes. It’s really weird that it was common/normal back then to just hit your wife. It was jarring to watch. Franco’s character is probably the worst one.

It’s also one of those movies where none of the characters are good people, it’s just bad people making bad decisions, in the name of love. I didn’t really find myself rooting for anyone and l didn’t feel particularly attached to the movie as a whole. I feel like it could’ve been better, and by better I mean more psychedelic, more violent, maybe even disturbing. It’s not a movie for everyone, but it’s pretty interesting and I enjoyed it. I like it but I don’t know if it’ll still be on my mind a month from now.

Worth the time

This isn’t some jam down your throat gay movie. It’s a movie with characters that happen to be gay. As someone who typically gets annoyed by movies that attempt this over the last decade now, I would say it wasn’t overwhelming or assertive at all. Straight forward plot, but never getting too predictable. It does a wonderful job of showing fresh exciting love being deconstructed by the realities of life very well.

It was also the perfect length. It never feels like it’s dragging on or being rushed.

Acting was above average for today’s standards. Nobodies acting got in the way of the plot. Overall decent way to spend an early afternoon.

Expect of heavy sex scenes in the first third or so btw.

not typical sci-fi

I noticed this movie at a local rental place the other week and thought, ‘What on Earth is THIS?’

My dad has a book with 17,000 movie reviews–just reviews ranging from a sentence to a couple of paragraphs–and they gave it 2 1/2 stars–3 being good–so it was almost good (to them). They chastised the almost non-existent characterizations, which I agree; we’re given a character, we’re given about half a minute background on them, and then this is what the character has to do. I was surprised that they didn’t mention the almost non-existent voice “acting” (note the quotes), as everyone just pretty much mumbled their lines…even such a big talent as Glenn Close (playing the queen) didn’t help.

However, please note these are VERY minor gripes. I would’ve given the movie three stars myself. It’s not the typical sci-fi, with the stupidity of childhood geniuses and robots with feelings abound (and I don’t think the stereotypes of “oh no, it’s sci-fi AND a cartoon!” help either). It’s very imaginative, but pretty dark and apocalyptic; probably not for kids under the age of 6, if not 8.

And on a side note, there was some pretty good music in it, too, and a lot of it.

They Never Made Them Like This….

French animator Rene Laloux of “Fantastic Planet” renown, attempted to make another surreal sci-fi adventure with the 80’s “Ghandar” or as Isac Asimov and Harvey Wienstien decided to call it for those of us in the states “Light Years”, which since no… space travel takes place, and since the movie is about a fictional country called “Gandahar” is probably a bad title. “Light Years” I guess sounds more sci-fi-ish, and if this film was to succeed in the states(it didn’t) it was gonna need every bit of conventionality it could muster.

The story is a complex one involving the standard sci-fi tropes of eugenics, time travel, death, and utopia, and though it’s certainly more involved than most animated sci-fi (a good deal of the time were watching the characters talk), it’s really the visualization of the world and it’s inhabitants which makes this movie worth seeing.

Like “Fantastic Planet” before it, Laloux’s environments are some of the most alien that have ever been imagined. The landscape is often undulating Daliesuqe deserts, which strange trees which resemble simultaneously bodily organs and geysers, a young girl offering her breast to a new born who looks like a tapir, born out of a grown embryonic plant, a city of underground mutants who resemble Blemmyes, ancient African monsters with heads beneath their shoulders, an army hollow soldiers who turn people into statues, video camera like birds who can lift entire buildings in swarms, and of course a colossal mile wide sentient brain in the middle of the ocean.

Laloux uses sci-fi story structures to create, very evocative images that do not look like anyone else’s, ever, something few filmmakers in any medium or genre, can claim with straight face.

That being said the English voice acting is just decent, not great but decent, it keeps the story moving, but doesn’t draw you into any of the characters. “Light Years” like “Fantastic Planet” or the animated films of Svankmajer are more concerned with form than content, but not oblivious of the latter.

So if you like heady sci-fi, visually stunning design, and unique animation, this is not to be passed up. If not it’s probably not bad to see once anyway, just for the visual treat of it all, and the more I mull over the story, not the plot, I’m more impressed with how well and vividly it told me a story I’ve heard a hundred times before.

Truly original and forgotten classic…

‘Light Years’ is a work of sci-fi animation that really stands apart from the pack. In order to enjoy this film, one must have an appreciation of science fiction altogether. For those individuals such as Leonard Maltin, whom dismissed this movie as a pretentious ‘talky’ cartoon, you must understand that ‘Light Years’ tells a very human story about irresponsible inventions and ignorance in a completely ALIEN setting; this is the true magic of the film! I thought the dialogue was creative and the story was fascinating. The creatures and characters are beyond description, and the ending will blow you away. True sci-fi fans I think should dismiss Leonard Maltin’s review and rent this one!

Complete Garbage

I’ll be completely honest, my expectations were never high for this movie, although I did predict that it would be better than Sponge on the Run based on its premise. The prospect of getting to know Sandy’s family has always intrigued me, and I was hopeful that this movie would offer a deep dive into Sandy’s relationship with her family and potentially establish a character arc. Unfortunately, this film did not fulfill any of these expectations. Sandy’s family members are one-dimensional stereotypes who lack intriguing backstories of any kind, which left me feeling disinterested throughout all of the sequences featuring them. The movie also lacks a coherent plot, containing numerous scenes that are simply unnecessary or feel disjointed. Two of the most blatant examples are the snake gang and police chase scenes. Neither of these scenes do anything to progress the story forward in any meaningful way, leading me to believe that these scenes were written to distract the viewers from the bare-bones storyline. The cheap animation is another fatal flaw that this movie suffers from. Many of the scenes that take place in Bikini Bottom feel a lot like video game cutscenes due to the cheapness of the animation. The animation during Sue Nahmee’s flashback is also a complete embarrassment. The animators somehow thought it was a good idea to poorly photoshop Sue’s head onto a child’s body instead of hiring an actual child actor to do the job for them. Speaking of Sue Nahmee, I have no idea what the writers were thinking when they came up with her character. Nothing about her is appealing whatsoever and her motives are cliché and downright ridiculous. The way that Sue Nahmee is defeated is also abrupt and confusing, with her turning into a fish and virtually disappearing from the storyline afterwards.

Additionally, the live-action segments are cringeworthy and showcase everything that is wrong with Nickelodeon in its current state. None of the actors looked like they wanted to be there, and the entire thing felt extremely corporate and reeked of executive interference. Lastly, the film completely lacks any form of actual humor, with attempts at jokes, such as the one about streaming on demand, falling flat and contributing to the corporate feel. There is also an entire scene in which SpongeBob tickles the feet of people at the water park, which made me audibly cringe when I watched it. Overall, this movie is a train wreck and an absolute disgrace to the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. It lacks the energy of the first two movies and feels like a watered-down, corporate rendition of what was once a brilliant series. I am delighted to see that other users have been able to enjoy this movie, but personally it isn’t for me and I will certainly never watch it again.

At Least Bugs and Lola Still Make an Adorable Couple

The story follows Lola Bunny who gets fired from a perfume store after destroying the store and failing to sell the store’s perfume. She decides to take a taxi home. That taxi driver just happens to be Bugs Bunny. When she gets home, she makes a perfume that makes people invisible. Cecil Turtle, Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam and Lola’s former boss go after her and label her and Bugs as fugitives. And the adventure begins…

I’ve been watching The Looney Tunes Show and New Looney Tunes (formerly known as Wabbit) for the past few days to get my Looney Tunes fix and as a way to hold me over before the next batch of shorts from the HBO Max series comes out. The former is great while the latter is only okay. I also decided to watch this today after finishing the first season of The Looney Tunes Show, I figured I would watch this as a bit of an intermission. It’s… fine? It’s there and it’s amusing enough. The plot allows for a fun action-comedy to take place, but Rabbits Run is never quite as fun as it could have been. Some gags land and some miss the mark entirely. Please do not make me hear Lola say OMG ever again. However, Daffy kind of cracked me up with his inclusion. The animation is okay, but it can be a bit choppy at times. The songs made me ears bleed. Thankfully, there are only two songs, but they both are about as pleasant as nails on a chalkboard. The action scenes are amusing enough. There is a fight between Bugs and Sam that is pretty entertaining. The relationship between Lola and Bugs is the best part about the film. It is really cool seeing Bugs slowly warm up to Lola, despite her many faults. Speaking of Lola, she has her personality from The Looney Tunes Show here and if you have not seen it, Lola is a lot more goofy and bubbly there than in Space Jam. I feel like that persona worked better in the animated sitcom-oriented show than on this action-comedy adventure. She did get better by the end of the film, but she started off pretty irritating. Bugs Bunny is likable and funny, but I like him in just about anything. It is very hard for me to watch something with Bugs in it and find him obnoxious or unlikable. The voice acting is great. I prefer Kristen Wiig because her voice for Lola is just perfect, Rachel Ramras is a solid substitute. Jeff Bergman plays as Bugs and Daffy and he is really good. He also voiced Bugs in the two shows I mentioned above and I have always had a soft spot for his snarky take on the wisecracking rabbit. The rest of the voice cast delivers fine work. The musical score is okay, but a bit too frenetic. It fits well with the action, but it sounds a little too jittery.

Looney Tunes: Rabbits Run is a pretty average direct-to-DVD animated film. I think diehard fans of the shorts would strongly dislike this because of the fact it does not resemble the characters in their original form. Fans of The Looney Tunes Show will have a problem because the character personalities in that show don’t really fit the personalities here. What works in an animated sitcom does not really work in a movie that is essentially one long chase. Anyone else would probably be pretty bored aside from younger kids. It’s not that bad to be honest. There are certainly some fun moments and a couple of sweet moments between Lola and Bugs, but ultimately its a harmless time waster.

Has nothing to do with The Looney Tunes Show, sadly

I LOVE The Looney Tunes show, and have rewatched it several times – the episodes manage to make me laugh every time with their often absurd but well timed humor and quirky memorable characters. So imagine my surprise that I only found out a month ago that the show got a movie! I got to checking it out instantly… and was severely disappointed. Don’t take it the wrong way – the movie is by no means bad. It is a decent enough flick and certainly has a much more cohesive plot than most other Looney Tunes movies. A big plus is that unlike Back in Action or Space Jam, they finally understood that Looney Tunes needs no live action characters and stand on its own. The problem is, that despite the identical designs and many voice actors returning… this movie does not take place in the same continuity as the Looney Tunes Show. In fact, many characters have totally different roles than on the show, have widely different personalities, or in some cases, are totally absent altogether. In a way, it all reminds me of another big disappointment – Superman: Brainiac Attacks, which used the animation design of Superman TAS but without all the heart or good writing of the original. The plot is, in short, that Lola – who works as a perfume salesperson for Giovanni Jones – tries to discover the perfect perfume. She unknowingly uses a super rare flower for this, given to her by her landlord, Speedy Gonzales – but the flower has properties to turn everything invisible, hence both the government agencies, led by general Foghorn Leghorn with FBI agent Elmer Fudd, and two thugs with Cecil Turtle, want to take the perfume. Lola escapes in the taxi of cab driver Bugs Bunny, while being chased by all parties, including bounty hunter Yosemite Sam and Giovanni as well. It all turns into an international spy movie chase from here with cameos from Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, the Gophers, Pepe le Pew, and culminating on a showdown on Mars with the real villain, Martin the Martian.

What can I say, the movie just squanders the opportunities for good jokes. Lola isn’t the scatterbrained and super random lady we know and love from the show, she is too much aware of what is going on around her to be like that. Bugs is a bit satirical but again, not enough to be funny. The biggest problem is that the movie focuses on the two of them, and their budding romance, instead of the jokes, and many characters remain ‘blink and you will miss them’ appearances. The worst case is easily Daffy, who was the cornerstone of the show – here, his appearance is little more than an extended cameo, he soon drops out of the picture. Porky, Speedy, Yosemite and Foghorn and Cecil aren’t any better off, even in the short scenes they have, as their personalities are totally unlike on the show. Notably absent are many characters as well, most importantly Tina Russo, Daffy’s girlfriend from the show, as well as Granny, Sylvester and Tweety, Witch Hazel, Gossamer and Taz.

In conclusion, if you are unfamiliar with the show, you will find it an average quality Looney Tunes movie with a few jokes, nothing to write home about. If you liked the show though, you’ll be baffled why someone at WB made the decision to create a movie that looks exactly like it, but feel totally different from it. I cannot recommend it, really.

One of the better ones

I found this to have a lot of good vibes from the original looney toons and I liked the rather original plot! This quirky and adorable version of lola bunny is also my favourite, especially with bugs! I adore they kept the gun violence, the blunt mentions of insanity, and how bugs enjoys female clothing and accessories! So many characters tied well onto an single plot. I greatly enjoyed it and it is one of the better animated films I’ve seen. Totally recommend!

Fun

Ok, this is definitely not the best Disney movie out there, BUT it is the best one made for TV. It is a fun movie to watch, with characters you actually care about, and a few very witty lines “Do you think anyone in France actually misses him.” Yes a few characters were created souly to further the plot, Andi’s father isn’t very realistic, neither Fern, and Renee’s accent is horrible. Still it is a fun movie, Dean and Andi’s relationship is sweet. Her mother, and two brothers are great characters. Even though it is predictable, come on guys it’s a Disney movie do you think that they’re going to have her bike crash and her die or something, it is a very fun watch, so fun that it is possible to watch it twice in one day without getting bored (my sister came in for the very end and then wanted to watch the beginning). So watch if it comes on TV, or it even is a satisfying rental, but don’t expect it to challenge you, or to be anything more than it is.

Good film

This is one of the few movies where who goes with bike, especially with off road bike, is not ugly and bad … I mean dirt is within the context. All the actor perform well, even if not all are professional. I would like to have more film like this for our sons, the messages inside the story are correct, not free violence but a lot of competition even if in the real world female championship is not together with male championship, this is a poetic license but acceptable. We have some excellent pilot, Kiara Fontanesi, Flo Parrini, Alice Magnoli that are both eligible for actress and as pilot too… I would like to see again a film with some of them (…I believe stunts are not necessary).

To compete with the boys

I’m all for modern day films that take plots from the classics and you don’t get more classic than the Bard. If a film like Motocrossed will encourage young folks to check out 12th Night and the rest of the works of Master Will Shakespeare so much the better.

Motocrossed is the story the Carson Family who all enjoy the sport of Motorcycle racing including daughter Alana Austin. Her twin brother Trevor O’Brien is an up and coming young racer, but when he’s injured and can’t compete his twin sister takes so she can compete with the boys and show she has the right stuff for the support.

Austin does have her problems though, she has to win her parents and siblings over which also includes a most indiscreet little brother Scott Terra. Mother Mary-Margaret Humes gets on board as Austin appeals to the feminist side of her. It’s father Timothy Carhart that’s kept in the dark for most of the film.

It doesn’t help that there’s a champion Motocross rider in Riley Hill that she has an interest in that extends to more than sports. But being in male drag won’t help her cause.

Motocrossed has some nice cinematography of the young folk doing their racing and it’s fine family entertainment.

Arthur the King Storyline

In 2014, in Costa Rica, Michael Light, an American runner, and his adventure racing team gets stuck on the first day after their leader takes the poor decision to kayak against the tide. Leo, one of the members of the team, is outraged that Michael has not paid attention to their opinions.After a 3 year lapse in his career, in 2018, Michael is not satisfied with himself and decides to race one more time with the hope of winning a race at last. He chooses two of his teammates: Olivia, a climber, whose father made a career in the same discipline; and Chik, an older racer, whose recovery from a knee injury is uncertain. However his sponsor imposes the 4th team member, Leo, Michael’s original team member, and now a social media celebrity; and, much against his own will, Light accepts. They fly from the USA to the Dominican Republic for a 5-day race mostly through mountainous jungle terrain. On the second day of the race Michael gives meatballs to a stray dog at the transition camp. Much further ahead in the race, in the middle of the jungle, the dog finds them and does not stop following them. During their walk at night the dog saves Leo and the Team from falling off a cliff and they all adopt him as one of them and call him Arthur, the King. For the last part of the competition, and while they are leading the race, however, they have to leave Arthur on shore to kayak on sea. But as they see the dog is about to drown while following them, they go back and save him. The team is thus delayed and loses the race, arriving second. Arthur collapses on arrival and a veterinary finds he is severely infected by parasites, advising to put him to sleep to prevent further suffering, which Michael refuses. He manages to take him to the USA, where the dog is saved.The last scene, 18 months later, shows them running together on a ridge.

Easily the Weakest of the Four

Greetings I’m afraid Crow fans are going to be in for a disappointment. ‘Wicked Prayer’, it starts out quite strong but rapidly loses steam. David Boreanaz, who should be well known by now at the very least for excellent villains, is not given much room here. I don’t think it was his fault; what he could do, he did do but the role just didn’t have much.

The plot is lacking seriously, the mythology is entirely corrupted (The Crows power does NOT come from love thank you very much), and the fight scenes, aside from the initial murder, are pathetic.

Which is a shame really because there was a half hearted effort to make the four bad guys, Famine, Pestilence, War and Death more than just another series of bad guys like T-Bird’s gang, and Curve’s boys or those cops in the underrated third movie. They were, from time to time unnerved by the violence, but this plot thread was crushed by how easily and half-heartedly they were lured back to evil deeds.

The biggest disappointment was their ends; perhaps it was budget constraints but there was near zero visceral satisfaction. I’m bloodthirsty, sue me.

Also a lot of the drama, what little of it was built up, was totally savaged by Danny Tregjo’s native American ‘Crow Dance’. Tregjo makes one of the bad-assest Mexican bag-guys/evil doers/violence loving vigilantes on screen today. He can even pull off a good priest and a so-so mourning father. What he cannot do, tattoo laden pectoral muscles flopping around like half empty water balloons, is a American Indian ceremonial dance. Not, at least, without my jaw hitting the floor before I follow after holding my ribs in a fit of hysterics.

I was incredibly sceptical of Eddie Furlong in the title role but heard good things from the crew on the film and, having seen him in the irony mask, felt my concern ebb. Truth be told he did have a few good moments but his pain was never convincing, not for one. single. second. Acting enraged, pained, tormented is a key part of the Crow’s character and he just did not have it. He can’t even compare to Vincent Perez’s little tantrum in front of Spider Monkey. Don’t even try to contrast Furlong with Mabius’ first humorous curiosity, then growing rage, or God Forbid, Brandon Lee’s near perfect representation of pain.

My biggest beef? The lighting. The entire movie was well lit. No darkness, no shadows. Everyone meandered about either in full time sun, or well lit night scenes. And that was a physical representation of this entire film: It wasn’t dark enough.

The Crow: Wicked Prayer, easily the weakest of the four. While I hate to admit it I think this franchise has gone as far as it can.

In the year 1993, Brandon Lee created a very memorable, dark & beautiful character: The Crow. The movie, with an exceptional script, smart direction, excellent photography and a brilliant cast, it truly one of my all time favorites. Everything from the look of the film, the characters (especially Lee as the Crow), the phenomenal soundtrack and the overall story of love being stronger than death – I was hooked! I love that film! I saw it in theaters no less than 8 times.

CITY OF ANGELS was a shallow, bastardized attempt to cash in on the success of the first film. In some ways, ANGELS almost ripped-off the original, but in a way that makes me loathe the film. Very disappointing!

SALVATION, the third in the series was…I can’t even remember. I saw it once, and do not remember being overwhelmed by it or feeling anything for it.

And now, 2005 brings back the return of The Crow with WICKED PRAYER. Unlike the first three films, this one takes place in the desert, near an Indian reservation. I must admit, I was impressed with the cinematography on this film. The desert scenes, the flashback scenes, all were well done and looked great.

So…what do I think of the film? The direction? The acting? For starters the direction of this film was all too often sloppy. It appeared, more times than not, the film was confused with where it wanted to go. The characters seemed stuck into scenes, with little to no direction, and carried scenes with no skill. Each set up seemed and felt under-rehearsed and underdeveloped.

Edward Furlong is by NO stretch of my imagination an acceptable Crow! Looking too much like a gay goth groupie, instead of a vengeful angel set to make the wrong things right. His costume appeared to steal too much from the original. I felt his performance was bland and tasteless. There was no emotion displayed by his character. I did not feel pity or sorry for him, or what happens to him. I was no convinced that his love was so undying that he could be brought back from the dead. He is no Brandon Lee! I mean, come on: “Quoth the Raven, Nevermore. Motherf**ker!” What kind of crap writing is that? Boreanez is wasted in this film. Though, he has not impressed me much with previous roles such as Adam Carr in VALENTINE, I still feel he is a solid actor and really can pull off the bad guy look. However, in WICKED PRAYER, it never feels like we are 100% sure of what he is doing or why. OK, I get that he is performing a ritual to become a demon or devil, but where did this come from? What is in motivation? World domination? I don’t think we will ever know.

Tara Reid….Ugh! And Macy Gray?!?!? And what was up with Dennis Hopper, in what could only be his worst performance.

None of the cast is able to save this mess! Very upsetting to see the series continue to be treated this way. What started out 12 years ago with such an inspiring beginning, is continuing to fall further down the spiral of sequel Hell!

Yes, This might be one of the worst movies in history!

I started out watching this movie with an open mind, keeping it that way until it was all over. But what I found was; a large piece of junk… Badly acted, badly filmed, badly directed and very badly written!

I love the first movie, but I have not yet seen the second two… But this one was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, alongside city of fear, that is.

It was SO bad, I can’t even try to explain it, but I just want to warn you all, it’s BAD! (Not Micheal Jackson bad… Just plain old bad) Edward, David, Tara, Danny and Dennis all reach a new low in this movie.. And under no circumstance would Edward Furlong ever make a good crow… What on earth were they thinking here? And what was Dennis Hopper doing in this one? He tried to sound like a pimp, but ended up sounding worse than Chinese-water-torture… (Probably not his fault though… I think I blame the writers) Also; David, Danny, Edward and Tara have all appeared in good movies before, proving their ability to act… It’s just this movie that drags their names trough the dirt… Making Edward a dirty s*** after this one and Pet Cemetary2…

I give this movie a 2… since I’m in a good mood…

Certainly not the weakest Link

Let me apologize for that play of words. Exit Marrakech is Caroline Link’s new film and her first work in five years, slightly over 10 years after she won the Foreign Language Oscar for “Nowhere in Africa”. Josef Bierbichler, who played the central male character in her last movie is in here as well, even if only for a very short scene as promising young actor Samuel Schneider is the center here. He plays a teenager named Ben. Ben spends the summer holidays with his dad, who he has not seen for quite some time, in Morocco. All in all, Schneider carries the film nicely during its two hours and has a good scene here and there. Same could be said for Hafsia Herzi, who proves here that she is more than just eye-candy. The real heart of the film is Ulrich Tukur, however, as a career-driven, family-repellent father who tries to rebond with his son and it takes extraordinary dangerous situations until he finally succeeds. All the scenes he’s in and especially his interactions with Schneider’s character are the should of the movie and even if he is not really the central character, this movie is much more about him opening up and becoming a good father thanks to a change in character than about a particularly mentionable development by Ben. He’s a anti-authority student early on and this does not really change until the end. My favorite scene in their trouble relationship was basically when Ben sung a certain lullaby to Karima and later we hear the father sing the same to Ben. A truly sweet moment, which showed there’s always been bridges between the two. They just need reconditioning.

I’m not really sure how I liked the diabetes sub-plot as it was really obvious from very early on that this is gonna be a problem and there will be some huge dramatic escalation towards the end. Generally I don’t mind predictability in movies if it is executed well, but I still believe it could have done better and more quietly impressive than Ben falling down theatrically in front of the other car. There’s a couple other minor criticisms, but neither is severe enough to say the film is not worth recommending. I liked how they did not go for an unrealistic happy-ending love story, but choose a way with which it all ended kinda messy with the bonding between Karima and Ben. Sure it was sad how things unfolded, but there really was no other option that would not have sacrificed credibility. Beyond that, the Moroccan landscapes were truly beautiful to watch and one of the main reasons why this needs to be seen on the big screen. Of course, fine cinematography is almost a given for Link, as we know from her earlier works as well. So yeah, “Exit Marrakech” is very much worth a watch.

Road movie

Growing up you will encounter many things that will amaze you or mature you. Going on a trip with your dad will open your eyes. Even if your dad is busy with business, you will learn things. This dad is not all cliché though, he does have an interest in his boy, even though he broke up with his mom a while ago.

But the boy has a mind of his own, trying and figuring things on his own, going places and doing things that might be considered stupid. Or just naive, as his nature seems to be. Someone who wants to explore and see things and help even if he doesn’t understand how things work or what cultural differences might mean … love conquers all? Maybe it’s more like “life conquers all” and you should live it, as best as you can

TIFF Review: Exit Marrakech

The highs and lows of father son relationships is one that is often explored in the world of cinema, especially within the festival circuit. Adventures that allow both men to interact and bond are usually presented through the road trip narrative archetype. Exit Marrakech or Morocco (the film is being presented with two different titles for reasons unknown), is a fresh new entry into this genre which uses the exotic Moroccan locale as the backdrop and additional protagonist in this warm story of different worlds, forbidden love and growing onwards.

Director Caroline Link does a masterful job with directing and writing duties, nailing the nuances between father and son dialogue, physical responsiveness and subtle body language that accolades her narrative even further.

Ben (newcomer Samuel Schneider) is just like any adolescent in the world right now; closed out to his family and teachers but Mr. Personality with his friends and strangers on the streets. Living a privileged life, Ben finds his summer turned upside down when he isn’t able to spend it with his fiends in Nice, France, instead, packs his things and heads to Morocco, spending the summer with his estranged theatre director father (Ulrich Tukur). Once Ben arrives in Morocco, he is anxious to leave; spending very little time with his father and spending even less time caring about his father’s newest original stage production. Fearless and unwilling to except the faux hotel life his father has adopted, Ben surrenders to the streets of Morocco, inevitably finding friends, falling in love with a beautiful prostitute Karima (Hafsia Herzi) and skiing down the sand dunes of the desert. Exit Marrakech is an intelligent yet devious film that uses the foundation of the political, religious and economic uncertainties of the country at the forefront of the film and allows them to dictate key plot points that allow Ben to morph from a boy to a man in one seemingly idyllic summer. Exit Marrakech won’t be the breakout film of the Toronto International Film Festival. nor will it see an extensive theatrical run due to its choppy and short lived emotionally empty editing choices and lack of chemistry with its actors. Schnider’s character, Ben, is the glue of the film, connecting the European with African cultures. But the film itself continues the trend Link has and her fascination with analyzing people out of their comfort zone.

Link’s 2001 Nowhere In Africa made a big splash and won the Best Foreign Language Film of the year Academy Award in 2002. Here, like with Nowhere In Africa, Link is fascinated with countries that have so many sides and worlds within its small boundaries. Morocco, a country with three languages, many political viewpoints and an abundance of culture, is a fusion country with a polarized sense of identity. Which, mirrored against Link’s characters, seems just right.

The film is a satisfying festival piece that will deliver to its niche festival audience. Essentially, Exit Marrakech is a really safe way to explore the beauty of a gorgeous, misunderstood and mischievous city filled with pit-picketers, Gypsies and berbers. The film itself serves as a travelling art-piece and window for a safe distance to travel to a part of the world that isn’t as gracious and kind as it is to its protagonists make it out to be.

A cute heartwarmer

Though I’m not the maternal type and particularly enjoy movies with kids, this one’s charm was irresistible. It wasn’t overly predictable and the storylines were enjoyable.

Hallmark Channel’s Family Friendly Movies and Stellar Talent

“Smart Cookies” airs on the Hallmark Channel.

Winding down the two weeks of the television press tour, one of the last great gatherings was for the Hallmark network to make some big announcements. During an elegant luncheon at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Hallmark’s president and CEO Bill Abbott talked about the full schedule of movies, specials, and daytime shows. Bragging about the “incredible talent we have,” Abbott looked around the room at the stars of the upcoming original movies, which are at the core of the Hallmark Channel’s “robust family content.”Abbott announced that Smart Cookies, premiering Aug. 18, is another great movie with a mission, “to help celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Girl Scouts of the USA,”.

Patricia Richardson (of Home Improvement fame), who stars with Jessalyn Gilsig (Glee) and Bailee Madison (Just Go With It)said “Smart Cookies” is about a real estate agent who helps a hapless Girl Scout troop with their annual cookie sale competition. Behind the scenes, executive producer Jimmy Hawkins, who was a popular child actor in the ’40s ’50’s &’60’s and played Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed’s son Tommy Bailey in the Frank Capra classic It’s a Wonderful Life.”Smart Cookies” is based on Hawkins story “Be Prepared”. Nowadays he’s producing great family friendly movies for a new generation. Richardson said she was “so delighted to work with him because when you do a production like this, we all become like a family. He’s one of the nicest guys in show business, and when you are working with children, when you have a producer who knows what it’s like, it brings a great quality to the set.”

Smart Cookies

I am a lifetime Girl Scout and while it was a cute Hallmark movie, I was disturbed to see how they would place an adult in a troop role with no suggested training for her. She clearly was not provided training which is not he Girl Scout way and the very first meeting she attended she took the girls off site in her vehicle. I understand there are some artistic licenses but I was watching it going that would never happen! Another discrepancy was the two troops discounting the price of the cookies! Again, this never would fly and I’m a bit surprised Girl Scouts agreed to this script as shown. A cute movie in general but not the known standard for what goes on in troops.

Average comedy, not good, but not too bad

I had to write a short review of this. Some of the top reviews of this movie is obviously made by someone affiliated with the movie in some way.

The movie is mildly entertaining. The plot is the main guy that wants to declare his love for his old girlfriend. The side-story is about an old guy who wants to spread his dead wife’s ashes by some shore or other. The side-plot isn’t executed very successfully. The acting is OK, although the side-kick gets to be annoying.

I was hoping for a few laughs, but I didn’t laugh once in the course of this movie. It was a bit funny at times. So I smiled, and that’s it.

If you have nothing else to do, or if you REALLY like zombie-themed movies by all means see it. You’re not gonna walk away very satisfied though.

I managed to sit though it’s entirety. I’m starting to think that I should have spent it sleeping instead.

I had a few laughs

I can understand that people really liked this zombedy. But it is just a few weeks ago that I saw two other US comedies namely, Vampires Su*k and Tucker and Dale vs Evil. It was very simple, Vampire Su*k was indeed a big su*k but Tucker was hilarious. Why, because it had stupid situations and misunderstandings. People who knew me know that I’m not into Us comedies except a few like Tucker. Sadly Deadheads failed for me.

I had a few laughs, for example the gym with the zombie they called Cheese. that was funny, but ripping off an arm and putting it back on place to move further isn’t funny anymore. On the other hand there are a few good things too, I was looking forward for McDinkle (Benjamin Webster). He’s the kind of guy you all know, I had a few laughs with him but the main characters weren’t convincing. It isn’t all comedy, in fact, it’s a love story between a guy being killed and turned into a zombie going to find his love. But they never got into stupid situations. On the gory part there is more to see, there are a few good things to see like the decapitation.

My mouth moved a few times but not enough to call it great. With Tucker for example I was laughing out loud. I’m sure that it will have his fans but this time I didn’t dig it, sorry.

Somewhat tolerable, for a low budget zombie movie

The plot: two zombies go on a road-trip and try to find one’s ex-girlfriend to profess his love.

This is a pretty stupid ripoff of Shaun of the Dead, but, unfortunately for me, I’ve seen much worse. As far as low budget, independent zombie movies go, this is actually one of the more tolerable entries. That’s not saying much when your competition is The Dead Hate The Living and Dance of the Dead. Still, there were appealing aspects to it, and it had some degree of charm, I guess. I’m a bit tired of self-aware hipster nerds in zombie comedies, though. Especially when there’s a romantic subplot.

If you like movies that are basically just a couple of goofy nerds spouting off pop culture references and movie quotes, then I’m sure you’ll find this amusing. Otherwise, I’d advise that you skip it. Instead, just watch Shaun of the Dead again.
